Blood and Water (♠ Blue Suit ♠)

((This really only took so long 'cause I couldn't decide on a name lol))

Mathis was sitting atop the plant shop's outer business table because someone had left him in charge and walked away and he was unsupervised. He tended to do things people didn't like while unsupervised, but at least it was in a non-harmful way. Unlike the demon spawn he'd just recently had to pull out of a ditch because he'd been an idiot and gone into the forest alone.

Sighing faintly, Mathis kicked his feet a bit and looked around, then went stock still when he realized someone had actually come to the table without him noticing and was inspecting some of the herbs on display. He paused and just stared when he realized she hadn't noticed him either, then considered how to respond without startling her. Shrugging and throwing it off as a lost cause, he just looked at her again.

"Hey, there!" He said, bright and chipper, and laughed a little when she jumped. "Woops! Sorry, didn't mean to scare ya. You're the new girl in town, right?" He smiled and held out a hand to shake. "Nice to meet you. I'm Mathis. Everybody's been talking about you and your partner, and your little one. . . It's not a big town. We need some sort of excitement in our nosy little lives."

(I usually found your names rather… Unusual. Not a bad thing! I sort of really like uncommon names ^^)

At the end, Mia could only do what she did best when she wanted to get her mind off something; get busy. She had stumbled across a table where she had found some interesting herbs being displayed and just stopped for a while to take a look. Much more intently than she'd usually do. That so, it hadn't really been her fault that she hadn't noticed the guy who was also there. Or perhaps, she was simply so spaced out and determined to keep everything out except from the herbs.

"Hey, there!" The voice, much nearer than she had expected, startled her and she even jumped a little due to the surprise. As if, taken out of a dream, she glanced up with rather big, surprised eyes and automatically straightened her back, tucking a few strands of loose sandy blonde hair behind her ear.

When he, Mathis, held out his hand for her to take, she quickly raised her own "I'm Mia, likewise" And then she even winced lightly when she was told that everybody had been talking about them "Have they now? I hope they're not bad things" She really did. After all, Joachim had indeed been crying on the streets and people had really believed Tome to be to blame. It was not like she wanted for them to think badly of them so soon, considering that they had decided to stay for a bit of an indefinite amount of time.

((This is a world with fairies, elves and dragons :3 I will use whatever names I please lol))

Mathis laughed softly. "Oh, no, not really. Just curiosity, mainly." He grinned. "There was that incident with the screaming hatchling, though, which sort of makes me want to laugh and go 'awww' all at the same time. Why was he crying?" He paused, shrugging. "Well, I guess it doesn't matter much, hatchlings cry like any other baby. Your friend was just so worried, though! It's easy to spot a first-time dragon parent like that."

((And sorry it's short but now I must go, as I am tired and have to get up early. Night!))

"That was my bad" Mia admitted though he was right, Joachim was pretty much like any other baby, he'd cry easily. When he mentioned Tome, she raised a hand to rub the back of her neck. Her friend, huh? Well… She guessed they looked like that. Even if she really couldn't state with confidence what seemed to be their current situation.

"I guess. When it comes to Joachim he's like that" She granted, her gaze going soft. It was a good thing though, ever since they found him Tome was much more… lively. "Anyway, how much do you ask for those?" Pushing those thoughts aside, she raised her finger to point at the herbs that had caught her attention before. I can make a good tea with those She thought.

Mathis hummed a soft, questioning note, just smiling a bit to himself, and glanced where she'd pointed. "Oh, that. That . . . Three coppers, I believe. Nothing special, really. You know what you should try while you're here?" He pulled his feet up onto the table and walked across it to hop down and run inside. When he came back, he was carrying a small pot with a little green plant on it, with large, bright, fire-orange flowers. "Dragon lilies! Your little one will love them!" He smiled brightly. "They're like dragon chocolate. Malia sometimes comes by and gets a bunch from the seller's in town to give the little ones a treat. She says it should only be a treat, though, so she doesn't grow it herself - but we've got it here!"

Mia followed Mathis with her sight before lowering her gaze back to the herbs she had decided to buy. Could be nothing special but she still was interested on them. At least they were not expensive.

When the young guy was back, with a rather pretty looking little plant on a pot, she tilted her head to the side a bit and looked at it for a moment, leaing in lightly. "And how much is that one?" She asked him before raising her head to look at him.

(Hope it doesn't have a lot of mistakes -.- Wrote it over the phone :/ )

Mathis tilted his head to the side a bit, thinking as he looked at the pot. "Hmmm. . . A bunch this size . . . probably a silver for this, but if you space it out it'll last a while." He smiled a little apologetically. "I don't actually own this place, or work here. I just got asked to watch the stand while the owner's away. If I happen to be shortchanging them, remember me fondly, because they're going to kill me."

((I don't see any :) Looks fine to me. We can keep it short if you want lol))

A sort of an amused smile crept over her lips at his statement before she raised a loosely balled up fist to her mouth in a pensative gesture "Tell you what. I take this herbs that I asked you about and I'll come tomorrow to buy the lilies if I'm given permission. You see it's not my money, perhaps if I happen to spend more than expected there'd be no one to remember you and two dead people" She said that in a half joking tone and a half serious one, even though she knew Tome wouldn't really harm her.

(That'd help, yeah xD )

((balled up chin? xD ))

Mathis laughed and set the dragon lilies carefully aside, getting a small basket for her to carry her herbs in. "Here, you can take what you'd like and put it here, and you'll just have to promise to come back and return it." He smiled brightly and started gathering the herbs she wanted, careful to keep it all intact. "How much for you today?"

(Lol mistake xD Fist :P )

Mia couldn't help it, that guy's smile and casual laugh was rather contagious, and so, with a small smile of her own settled on her lips, she gave a nod "Promise" She granted. At his question, she considered for a few seances before replying "Just four of them should be enough, thanks" She declared. Yeah… Perhaps she could get Tome into drinking it, she'd very much like him to. Concerning the lilies, she'd also ask him about it.

((Sorry, had family business to take care of lol))

Mathis nodded and put what she wanted in the basket, taking the fee from her and handing her the little wicker thing with a smile. "Have any plans for how to use it? It makes pretty decent drinks, but it's a good addition to food, too, if you've got the right materials." He sat back up on the table again, kicking his feet a bit. "Maybe tomorrow we can swap recipes." She seemed nice, and he liked talking to nice people.

(No worries c:)

"I'm planning on using it to make a tea" Mia replied as she nodded at him in a grateful gesture "Didn't know you could use it for food as well though" And that sounded nice. If she had to be honest, collecting herbs and using them was sort of her hobby "You seem to know about this stuff even though you neither own or work here" She quite enjoyed to talk with people who knew about this, if even a bit "Maybe tomorrow we can swap recipes." A little, bit of sheepishly smile lightened up her features "Sounds like a plan." He was rather friendly, she liked that. Also, talking with somebody else was… nice, really nice.

Mathis nodded, grinning happily, and gestured around the market. "I'm sort of the odd-jobs man around these parts. I help out where I can, do a little bit of everything, so I learn a lot of little things. It's fun, and I like getting to know all of it. It's not an incredibly big town, so if you stay long enough you get to know everybody." He laughed a little. "And I've been here since I was born, so it's kind of difficult to get away with things when everybody knows you."

"That's nice" To be able to know everybody because you've lived on one town all your life. She'd have sort of liked a life like that as well. There was something she… wanted to know about though. "Could you tell me about Malia? How's she?" Mia could say she was nice, that was for sure. But now that she knew a bit more of who she really was, she was rather curious.

Mathis tilted his head a bit to the side, considering. "What d'ya mean? I mean, she's been here for almost as long as I can remember, and everyone pretty much likes her, but I don't know too much about her. She's sort of aunt-like to everyone. Why? Something wrong at the dragonry?" He hoped nothing was wrong. She tended to get depressed every once in a while, but usually she just threw herself into her work until it passed.

"Oh no, not at all. Just curiosity" Which was true. Not the whole reason for it, of course. "Anyway, thank you Mathis" She turned around to leave, but she stopped on her heels when she was reminded of something "Oh! Do you know where can I find some hand-crafting?"

Mathis started to wave goodbye, then paused and frowned a bit when she turned back to say something else. "Hand crafting?" He shrugged a little. "Depends on what kind of crafts you're trying to do."

((I honestly have no idea what you meant by hand-crafting lol))

"Oh any kind" Really, she was interested on anything. "Bracelets, rings… That stuff" Perhaps she was not that interested in buying but she really wanted to get to see some of them, admire that sort of job.

(That's the problem when I use word reference for words I do not know how to translate :/ Hmm the works that artisans do?)

((. . . arts and crafts supplies? Ohhh, you mean like jewelry people have made. Why didn't you say that? lol hand-made jewelry and crafts. I guess hand-craftings could be that, now that I know))

Mathis shrugged a little and pointed. "If you go down ten houses or so, closer to the center of town, you'll get the more craft-like products like that. We have a little bit of everything sold a little bit of everywhere, really. Everyone trades and buys and sells from everyone, really."

(Oo well yeah. I guess that'd have been much clearer than the other one. Silly of me xD )

Mia threw a glance back from over her shoulder to where he had pointed before turning her head back. "Ten houses or so. Got that. Thanks… again and er… See you around" And then she finally turned around to leave again. Not bad at all She thought to herself as she smiled mentally. Who knows? Perhaps he could be her new friend. Or… maybe she was thinking too far… But hey, one could always hope, right? With that in mind, she walked down the streets.

((It's cool. I understand now lol))

Mathis smiled, waved and just watched her go, then returned to watching over the stall until it's owners came back. He would have to be sure to be back the next day, and then maybe he could visit her at the dragonry. She was nice to talk to.

************************************

Tome was still sitting in the hatchling's pen when Mia returned, not lying on the ground covered in dragons anymore, but watching them all splash around in the large but shallow basin that was supposed to be used for drinking purposes. They couldn't all fit of course, but did reasonably well taking turns on their own, and seemed to be having fun with it. He just sat with his arms around his legs, chin resting atop his knees, and supervised in case any of them got hurt, too lost in thought to do much of anything else. He hated thinking so long and hard about things that worried him, but there wasn't much else to distract him.

Having left the herbs Mathis had sold her on the room, Mia headed to where she had left Tome and Joachim. She wasn't sure if she'd still find them both there, but it was start. If not, she knew she'd stumble across them sooner or later. When she did found them there, she smiled a bit as she quietly made her way towards Tome. He seemed to be… concentrated? Lost in thought actually. "Hey" She said a bit softly as she approached him, as if that'd help a bit so that he wouldn't get startled by her.

Tome didn't so much jump at hearing her words as he did stop moving entirely, including breathing and blinking. He blinked slowly and brought himself back to reality when he realized someone had spoken to him, and just looked up at her without really moving his head. ". . . Hey." He said back, because he wasn't really sure how else he was supposed to respond. "Did you get what you went out for?" He didn't want to just ignore her, so he tried to think of what he could actually say to her. That was the best he could do.

Mia raised her eyebrow, but even though for a moment she thought of him as acting a bit strange, she dismissed it "Oh, yeah. Also…" Pulling out a pretty crimson red bracelet from her pocket she showed it to him with a smile on her face "I was given this" It had a small golden stone on the middle. Truth was, it reminded her of a certain someone's eyes, mainly the reason why it had caught her attention. It had been a surprise when the lady had told her she could keep it.

Tome blinked at the shiny piece of jewelry a moment, shifting a bit to better look up at her. "Given?" He reached out a hand for it to look it over. ". . . It's pretty." He handed it back, but paused for a moment, brow furrowing a little. "Do you . . . want things like this?" He'd never once thought of it, if only because at the palace there was always jewelry, and away from it Fawn had never wanted any, or been able to stand the way it felt on her skin. He'd never thought to ask if Mia wanted things like that.
