The light that fell down upon the ruins was dim, tired but distinctly alien. Perhaps that was not a fair description. The light had been here very long, as long as the smooth, bleached mineral like substance that made up the ground and the monolithic ruins and their perversely etched walls. So if the light seemed alien to the visitors to this place then it was probably because they were alien to this place and not the other way around.
The visitors wore long black robes with hoods that concealed their face and they chanted long forgotten verses with guttural arrangements of vowels and consonants sounded as if they did not belong to humans and made one wonder if perhaps the mouths underneath those hoods did not belong to humans either. The visitors were arranged in a precise circle and their chanting almost but not quite drowned out the sounds of something grunting and struggling at the centre of the circle. The chanting of the hooded figures seemed to raise in pitch and intensity as one of them approached the centre of the formation with arms raised. Then suddenly their was a snapping as if some cord or rope had been broken and a bestial howl erupted from the centre of the formation as the hooded figure that had advanced inwards was suddenly thrown back.
A kind of creature emerged from the formation by knocking away hooded figures with its massive forearms. The creature was roughly humanoid though it towered over the hooded figures even with its hunched over posture. It was covered shaggy, black fur and seemed to wear as a kind of a mask a white, antlered skull. The creature howled again and then bounded away into the distance. Some of the hooded figures made as if to pursue the beast but were restrained by a dismissive wave from the figure in the centre of the circle, who had regained its feet.
"Leave it," said the figure, with a surprisingly rich, deep voice. "We have other sacrifices and it's more important that the ritual proceed on schedule. Just fetch another from the cells,"
As other hooded figures scrambled to comply with this order the one that had spoke turned from the circle and lifted its hood to gaze upwards. Bizarrely what awaited the gaze of the figure was not sky as one might think but a vast, endlessly stretching, white desert.
Meanwhile...In the small, mountain town of Iminaza
"~Goooood evening all you night owls, all seventeen of you that happen to be listening to the Iminaza Region Community Radio at a quarter to midnight. This is Midnight with Miyako and while it's not quite midnight I'm all the way Miyako, here to keep you company through the darkest hours until our public funding gets cut cause we sure as hell aren't keeping the lights on with ad revenue. I love you guys but damn, tell a friend or something assuming you have any. Anyway here's some music to keep you going for a while, I picked something spooky so hopefully it'll scare off anything that might be lurking out there in the dark~"
The radio was a battered, very retro model flanked by two dusty, wooden speakers that gave a distant, echoey quality to the music that leaked out of of them. The vocals drifted out of the speakers in search of an air; beneach the old fashioned, dangling bulbs that illuminated the place with a nostalgic warmth; past the refrigerated display, which hummed softly as it chilled a formation of pretty cakes and slices; past the soft, dark leather booths and wide, polished, wooden tables out to the shop windows, tastefully painted to read "Rest for the Wicked" to the front door which was curiously, invitingly open despite the late hour.
For all the signs of activity: the playing radio, the humming display: the lights switched on and of course, the door wide open, there seemed to be no one around. Not yet at least.
Akkun had finally helped Aiko finish her homework and gotten her to sleep. The hours listed on the flier for the recent job posting he found were...strange to say the least. What kind of cafe is open at this time of night. He pilled his fur lined jacket on and opened the door of his small apartment, turning to see his younger sister asleep on the futon they shared on the floor. "I hope this doesn't take too long." he whispers to himself as he carefully closes the door behind him. The walk to the Rest for the Wicked cafe wasn't too far. The chilled night air was a refreshing change to the stagnant air in his apartment. As he walked he could hear the sound of distant cars and the conversations of people who must be natural night owls. As he turned the last corner before he reached the address on the flier he saw a quaint looking cafe.
As Akkun entered the cafe he could hear a radio playing soothing music. Everything looked old in the cafe, but he wasn't above that. Akkun searched the cafe for the most comfortable seat he could find. He sat in one of the booths and picked up a menu. "I guess I'll get a coffee." he muttered and finally called for someone to take his order. Now he just waited for his coffee and the person who posted the flier to arrive...
Taeko Suijin Pausing a short distance away down the street Taeko was surprised that the place was actually open at such a the late hour but decided it might just be a special opening for whatever weird cult event he'd come along to just to crash. Heading inside he could see that one person who looked to be several years older was already there, so evidently at least one person had bought into what the place was selling or maybe just a night worker taking a break.
Finding a seat he looked around trying to work out if the decor was actually as old as it looked or just some attempt at a chic look and tried guessing at what "Shinigami Wanted" could mean. The town was a bit too small and had too much of an older population to be a good place to start a cult and he hadn't found any when he'd checked online to be an out of town cult, could be someone looking to hold a seance or play with a oujia board for money.
Taeko was leafing through a menu when a thought struck him, what if he had just wandered into some sort of D&Desque game night? His noble intention of exposing a scam would be pointless since he wasn't some nutjob who thought tabletop rpgs were demon summoning rituals, he reasoned if that was the case he might at least join in. Settling down he went to get himself a cola and kept watching the door to see if anyone else showed up.
Ema Narisawa
A soft sigh of relief escaped Ema's lips as she glanced over at the clock looking at the time. It was already quiet late, her little sister Izumi waking up with a bad dream causing her to get up in order to try and comfort her. It had cut off her nap more then she would of liked though it was something Ema could deal with. If there was one thing she learned over the years, it was to be resilient and ready to tackle all the challenges that came her way, even with a few hours of sleep behind her! It was that mentality that had helped her to find a strange job offer for working late at night. It was the perfect type of job for her, long after her siblings should be fast asleep and she could make some money to help support them better! She was no stranger to odd jobs and the awkwardness of trying to balance them with taking care of her brothers and sister, but this one seemed perfect in giving her plenty of time to take care of her family without getting in the way!
"This is so exciting! I can't wait to see how doing... um... this job is!" She spoke out to herself in a rather bubbly tone nearly bouncing in place. She put her hand over her mouth looking around a bit nervously seemingly catching herself after a short delay being a bit noisier then she intended, listening in to make sure no one might of woken up due to her excited little outburst. The last thing she wanted to do was have them stir from their sleep only to find out their big sister wasn't around to comfort them. She already felt a little guilty for leaving in the case they might wake up from some bad dream but they needed all the money they could get. She wanted to make sure they had enough money to live and even more so to put away for when they were older. It also gave her a little money for herself to get some things she wanted. The very idea of picking up some new material and making herself a cute new outfit for her cosplaying hobby all but made her giggle in glee.
The blonde quickly shuffled to the door, grabbing her jacket sliding her one arm through followed by the other. She adjusted the hood making sure she looked decent. She figured it might be a little chilly this late, at the very least she would be prepared. As they always say 'A prepared person will be prepared, and someone who isn't won't be!', well perhaps that wasn't the saying but it sounded good in her head! She grabbed her bag slipping her phone in it before quietly opening the door doing her best to minimize making any noise before shutting it, locking the door behind her. She tip toed along the walkway from her family's small home making it to the street lifting her arm up in the air as if in triumph from making a great escape.
Ema made her way up to the location, Rest of the Wicked. A rather odd place to say the least. She didn't think there would be that many wicked people to warrant a place made specially for them. Why would this supposed job be here? What if they card her to see if she is a wicked and see she isn't? She shook her head shrugging off the thought. She was pretty sure there were no requirements like that. Mariya was like way smarter then her, she would of noticed that right? She did seem at least partially interested in it... would she end up showing up? She tapped her finger to her chin before finally shaking her head clapping her hands together.
"Throw caution to the wind so it doesn't get in the way! Let's do this!" She spoke raising her hands up in gesture as if to pump herself up with a bright smile on her lips. She took a step towards the open door as the strange music from the radio reached her ears not paying all that much mind to it as she slipped into the establishment to find it... rather quiet.
There were a few people inside already, her eyes particularly shifting first to a rather good looking brown haired guy glancing at a menu. Another red haired nerdy type fellow looked to the door obviously entering through it noticing his eyes upon her. He must be the wicked type it was talking about right? Those guys who would just stare at you seemingly for no reason though oddly not looking at your eyes but down at something else like she had her eyes on her chest. To give him credit he did seem to just be staring that way. Maybe he was like an observer... or perhaps one of the recruiters? He did seem younger though probably closer to her own age. If anyone it was probably the more matrue cute guy rather then the nerdy one recruiting. Oh well, if you don't know which Ema... go big!
"Hellooooo!" She spoke in a rather upbeat tone waving her hand speaking a bit louder and being more broad not at all certain how to approach the situation deciding for the scattershot approach. If she didn't know who it was hiring her she might as well just speak out broadly and hopefully they would step foeward whichever of the people there it might be.
"I'm here for that night job to be a... um... Shinn... O Gummy? Where do I apply?" She asked out loud figuring one of the two would step forward. She sure would get complimented by Mariya if she saw her asking out loud in a disruptive manner rather then pestering each person to try and find out where she was suppose to go!
If you've walked through the town, you've likely already seen most of it. The same couldn't be said about bigger cities but when it comes to small towns the thing it has over cities is that it has depth. Stores that have people who will remember your face, restaurants that will remember your favorite order almost by heart, a convenience store that suddenly has that drink you really liked stocked after you half mentioned it being your favorite. If you keep a sunny disposition, or at least approach-ability, you will find yourself easily coming into the fold.
A little place where people can call their own.
He was known well enough, having a recognizable mug would do that, but Takahite also had this habit of being abit to nosey when it comes to folk's issues. Like how he had just spent four hours helping old man Yamashika move his stock inside... When he had clearly not thought just how heavy those boxes were... Plus him having a bad back today didn't quite help, at least it helped Takahite notice the old fellah needed help. Good seminarian, wait no was it Samaritan? yea, had a T in it after all...
But.. where did that word come from? what was a Samaritan...?
Sounded like an old word to...
The young man's thoughts was put to a halt as he accidentally kicked a discarded can down the empty-ish street. The metallic pang-ing echoing down the quiet street. he scooped it up while walking, examining the old cola can with brief interest before stashing it in the nearby trash can.
In any case, it meant to be a good person, thus he had to be it. He had a promise to keep after all.
...But.. you can't live these days working for free after all.
However, a flyer that he had seen put up awhile ago was his ticket for extra spending money. Shinigami... the cafe was probably gonna do some sort of show or play, probably needed somebody as a replacement! And hell, what teen didn't think being a death god for a time wouldn't be cool huh? At least it was better than cram studying.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rest for the wicked huh...?
"Bruh... it sounds like it'd do a play about shinigami. is it like a scene or goth cafe or somethin'?" The guy said to nobody truely in particular. Or... was it a fancy word for the staff? bunch of people were inside so... best he head in himself. But... Somebody rather loud was in the enterance.. Well, kinda in the enterance. She was cute, from behind at least, but best he keep goin. he pushed the door inside and awkwardly looked around the room. "..Uhh... Anyone... Lookin for a death god? hehe...heh...ha.." he chuckled awkwarly, before sliding towards a nearby booth. Man this place felt stifling.
It was rude to be late. Lime was taught this from a young age, as her family was never one to offend. It was probably this upbringing that made Lime so wary of doing something wrong. It was easier to be quiet and stand in a corner where you couldn't offend anyone. The only place Lime ever put herself in the spotlight was at Kendo Club, and she messed up there and got kicked out. Lime intended to never make a mistake like that again. To be sure she wasn't in the spotlight, she decided to act on a job ad she saw in the paper. She didn't really know what a Soul Reaper was, but it was probably some weird mortician kind of job. A job like that sounded very solitary. No one else would want to do something like that... right? Lime had neglected to tell her mother of the exact nature of this new job she'd be looking at, since she didn't know yet herself. However her mother was happy that Lime was going to finally get an actual job, rather than the basic tasks people around town would give her in the years prior.
"I'm heading out now, Mom!" Lime called out from the front door. Her mother peeked her head out from the living room, with the sound of gunshots blasted from the television. Shows with lots of violence were her mother's favorite, and Lime couldn't understand why.
"Good luck with your interview, tell me all about it when you get back ok? Also be careful at night! You wouldn't want a ghost to snatch you up!"
"G-ghosts aren't real! Stop trying to scare me!" Lime whined before slipping out the door and into the nighttime air. The weather was nice tonight. The walk to the... 'Rest of the Wicked Cafe' would be a nice one. Lime's eyes wandered to the dark shadows. Could there really be ghosts out here, just watching her right now? Lime shivered, suddenly a little chilly. She proceeded to hurry to the cafe before she had to chance to find out if ghosts were actually real or not. Why did her mother have to go and get her worried all over again?
The cafe wasn't far from Lime's home, cutting off the imaginary ghosts' pursuit. As Lime approached the building, she watched as a familiar blonde girl walked in. Lime followed, just stepping the door when she heard her asking where to apply. Lime recognized the voice. It was one of the bubbly girls from her school, the type that Lime often avoided. It wasn't that Lime disliked her type, she simply preferred a more relaxed setting to live her life in. Another guy walked in before her too, one she didn't recognize. She slipped inside as silently as she could, which for Lime wasn't very quiet at all with her loud footsteps. Her eyes ran over the other individuals in the cafe, recognizing Taeko near the door. Lime approached him and smiled. "G-good evening, Taeko? Are you here to see about that weird job ad too? I uh, didn't think there would be so many people trying to apply..."
Harumichi Sendoh "A job? Seriously? Suuuuure, I believe that." Despite the late hour a pair of girls were making their way through the dark alleyways of Iminaza, their path dimly lit by the moonlight. Both of them were clad in the same school uniform,carrying similar looking covers that sheathed their hockey sticks, though they were easy to tell apart due to one of them having short brown hair while the other had longer grey hair. The short haired brunette spoke again: "Stop bullshitting me Haru, what are you really after?" She said before giving her friend a playful jab on the shoulder, Harumichi let out a hearty laughter in response."Oh wow you totally got me now Niko, I definitely have an ulterior motive involving robbery or somethin' like that, I can't hide anything from your bright mind." She answered, her tone dripping with sarcasm. In reality Harumichi had begun scouting out any potential part time jobs a long time ago as she wanted to start providing for herself in order to stop leeching off of her parents, though little to no results ever came of it due to how picky Harumichi was. "Whatever, do what you want, I ain't your mom. Still though-" Niko glanced down at the flyer Harumichi had passed her earlier in their walk. "-what the fuck is a Shinigami?" Yeeeeah, even Harumichi couldn't come up with a straight answer 'cause the terminology also perplexed her. A bit of research revealed that it referred to some folkloric entities relating to death, but that only ended up creating more questions than it answered."Hell if I know, probably some fancy schmancy way of calling a barista or waiter. I am mostly interested in that competitive salary part, sounds like lotsa fun." Harumichi replied as she shrugged. Niko let out a chuckle before handing back the flyer. "Oh yeah? Then you best be hoping they ain't expecting you to drop by with some fancy clothes." Niko was right, due to how long field hockey practice had prolonged that day (Plus some totally not nefarious acts) Harumichi had missed her chance to head home for a change of clothing and thus was forced to resort to her school's uniform for the interview. "Ugh, I know. Lets hope they are chill about it."
The pair continued with their walk for a lengthy stretch, entertaining themselves with idle chatter about miscellaneous topics, until they were brought to a halt after emerging from an alleyway. "Welp, I outta go this way, thanks for looking after my stuff, I owe you one." Harumichi said as she handed her bag of belongings and hockey stick over to her friend."You best believe you owe me one. I'll drop'em off with your parents, good luck with your little interview."Niko said as the two exchanged a fist bump. "Yep, take care." And with those final words exchanged the two began going their separate ways. It'd be a few more minutes before Harumichi arrived at the cafe and so she chose to spend the remaining time losing herself in a sea of thoughts. What was she even doing? Harumichi had never truly stopped to think of how odd this whole situation was. Still, this could in no way be an illegal event , after all the flyer had been displayed in such a public way. But why? Why refer to the job as "Shinigami"? Maybe the cafe was going for a folkloric theme? That would surely explain the cafe's bizarre naming choices. Many times during this walk she considered the possibility of simply turning around and heading back home, but her intuition told her to push forward. As she turned one final corner Harumichi was finally able to spot the cafe, she was even able to witness someone entering it. As she approached the building Harumichi noticed that the cafe didn't exactly seem to be themed after Japanese folklore, at least from the outside. It didn't matter anyways, there was no turning back now and frankly her curiosity had even made her a bit excited to find out what this was all about.
"Yoooo, what's up?" Harumichi greeted as she stepped into the joint. A quick scan of the room put Haru's mind at ease as it revealed the presence of some familiar faces, though she wasn't able to recall any of their names. Without waiting for any sort of response Harumichi strolled into the cafe and plopped down on an seat near the counter. Now that she had settled in Harumichi took some proper time to examine the rest of the attendees. First we had an older looking guy whom Harumichi had never seen before, though based off of looks he seemed like the type of dude Niko would be into. Then we had what looked like a couple having a little chit chat near the door, a relationship in which Haru assumed the chick seemed to most definitely be the one who wore the trousers around. The next person Haru was easily able to identify as the dude whom one of her friends, Chizu, had been attracted to for a loooooong while, though nothing ever came of that and she eventually moved on to someone else. She didn't know anything about him though,other than Chizu would refer to him as the "Bruh Dude". And finally the last person Haru was easily able to identify as "Mrs.High Spirit", a peppy girl that Haru did not trust in any way, shape or form. "Nobody can be that happy all the time, she's either onto something or on something..." Harumichi thought before diverting her attention towards one of the menus. She wasn't exactly hungry at the moment but was instead looking for any sort of clues that revealed the nature of the job they were all signing up for, because there sure as hell wasn't anyone else there to inform them that at that time.
In the small town of Iminaza, during the dead of night; if one had been happening to go down a certain street, they would have seen an unusual and concerning sight. A young girl scaling down her three story home with climbing robe like an escaping convict from prison or fleeing princess from a tower. With thick strands of bundled cords tired securely around her slim waist, the girl confidently and leisurely lowered herself hand over hand. Her shoes stepped carefully on her home's exterior as she walked backwards towards her lawn's surface. An easy smile was on her face as she stared up into the night sky and after a few moments she landed on the neatly trimmed grass that her father diligently maintained.
"Escape, successful!" Mariya said quietly, giving herself a fist pump in celebration.
The dark haired girl wrapped up the loss bands of climbing rope and threw them back through her bedroom's window. She missed the first few tosses but eventually got the robe through. With her escape tool secured, she adjusted her school uniform and made sure her wallet and cell phone were still in her skirt's pocket. She froze suddenly; realizing it would have been better to not wear her school uniform to possibly a job interview. Oh, well... it was too late to change now.
With her uniform and items in order, the high school girl walked off into the night with little fear and a happy hum following in her wake. Iminaza was a small town with little crime; sure there were some bad apples with the younger population, but Mariya had never been on the bad side of any of them. Any potentially confrontational situation she had ever been in had always been solved with a smile and a few words of niceness. She knew it was silly to think that might always work; so she still held it in the back of her mind to be prepared to defend herself. Her mother and father had always been big on being able to defend herself with violence if necessary. As a child she had been drilled on self-defense techniques so often that sometimes she now thought that walking around a puddle was harder than putting someone in a wrist lock.
Her family's large home was lost in the gloom of the night as she continued down the quiet streets. Mariya liked the tranquil atmosphere the night gave. Quiet, mysterious, and consuming. Being out at night felt nostalgic. Like an old and primal part of her was more at home under the moon's light than the sun's. There were no drilling parents or applauding teachers or even her own fears and anxieties here. Just the moon, the stars, and the night's gloom. All accepting and uncaring.
Her mind in a near tranquil state, it took Mariya by surprise when she suddenly reached her destination. "Rest for the Wicked", lights on, doors open, and music playing within. With a soft smile and eager purple eyes, Mariya entered the small cafe. The place gave off an old and worn feel. Not rundown, but certainly not fanciest or newest cafe there ever was. The amount of people inside took her by surprise. She supposed it was silly for her to think that she had been the only one interested in the weird flyers around town.
Looking around at the people inside she spotted several faces she knew. Taeko; a smart boy her own age that she sometimes found interesting rocks for. He wasn't a bad person; but he also wasn't the funnest or nicest to be around when mysterious or non-science stuff was being discussed or explored... he was also a little weird. There was also Takahite. She couldn't remember ever interacting with him before, but he always seemed nice to her. Happy to help others and even recycle! Mariya wasn't surprised to see either of the two boys here.
She was a little surprised to see Lime Boolaki here. Lime had been a member of the school kendo team when Mariya herself had been forced to join by her parents. She hadn't spoken much with the other girl and had left before Lime had been famously kicked out of the club for dirty fighting. She was talking to Taeko currently and Mariya wondered if the two were friends.
Mariya was very surprised to see the next face. Harumichi Sendoh; a school delinquent that got into fights all the time. Mariya didn't think that the rougher girl was bad. In fact, she had run into Harumichi and her friends a few times during her random wanders in more out of the way places. They had never tried to pick on her before (at least she didn't think they had) and with a few hasty explanations that she wasn't "taking their turf" things had never been dissolved to the point where Mariya had been forced to defend herself against them.
The last face she knew was the one that Mariya went to. Ema Nariwasa. A close friend of hers that Mariya was happy to hangout with almost anytime. The two had even discussed this very place and strange job. Ema had a lot of siblings and was looking for a job. Unlike herself; Ema actually needed the money. It would have been fun to work somewhere with Ema; but with this many people here, Mariya doubted that they would have enough openings for everyone. It was a little disappointing, but as long as Ema could get a position it would be fine with her. In fact, everyone here probably needed the job more than her.
"Ema-chan! Good evening! I don't think the recruiter is here yet... lets see what coffee they have! You remember I love coffee right?" Normally Mariya wasn't one to casually touch another person, but for friends, she had few barriers with. So she grabbed the other girl's hand and led her to one of the leather booths to look at the menu. She briefly wondered again if this job was really a barista position like she originally thought. The longer she thought about it... and now looking around... it seemed less and less likely.
It had been a good month since Ketsuichi began his job search in the city. For the most part, he was sharply dressed in the finest clothes he could buy: A black suit, black slacks, a white button-up, a nice tie, and a pair of leather shoes. Every time, he was rejected a week following the interview. He went through multiple different approaches, all of which happening before his employers even had the chance to taste his cooking! But no longer. Rather than presenting a clean cut business person, Ketsuichi needed to dress for the job. That is, Ketsuichi had to look like a cook. He revised his resume, placing his restaurant license from having been a chef for over ten years at the very forefront of his resume. No more was the suit-and-tie Ketsuichi, but the gruff thirty-something year-old who grew up in the country side. On his back, Ketsuichi carried a wok. Inside it, were several bags of ingredients: A pre-made broth, a bottle of oil, several spices, Tupperware containers filled with sauce, noodles, among other things.
Ketsuichi stood, hands on his hips as he looked up at the sign, ignorant of the people who walked beside him and into the cafe. "Bizarre name for a cafe. Clever, I guess." He mumbled. The older male, skinny, wrinkled, and smelling of tobacco looked extremely out of place compared to the much younger people around him. He assumed that they were just patrons, despite all of them looking to be about the same demographic- which is to say people looking for part time work. But Ketsuichi was no part timer.
In the background, he could distinctly hear someone say "I don't think the recruiter is here yet", but he ignored it. Ketsuichi cracked his knuckles, locating the door to the kitchen, and made a beeline straight to it. There, he unpacked all his equipment, heated up his soup, and boiled his noodles. Before long, ten bowls of ramen lined the counter. It was a clear chicken broth with straight noodles topped with pork chashu, kikurage, ajitama and green onions.
"Ready." Ketsuichi huffed as he presented his work.
The still air of the night had a certain feeling, one that was almost eerie and would give most people the creeps, and even though this wasnt even a time a whole lot of people would consider late the streets of the mountain town Iminaza were dead, not many people out and a bout except for those who were expected to be. Unfortunately for Rika Ueda she was one of those people still up, even though she didnt want to be. She had no use for being up this late unless she had a gig or wanted to hang out with some friends, other than that she was usually in bed early. Usually she was a lazy, freeloading, highschool drop out who spent most of her time either in a tattoo parlour or in a garage screaming the lyrics of a famous band. But unfortu ately for her her aunt forced her into a predicament where she either had to find a job or go back to school, and she certainly wasnt going back to school. Remembering that conversation made her sigh, after her aunt had pointed out several things such as having payed for all of Rika's hobbies and her Tattoo and piercing addiction and that she refused to give Rika any more support unless she went back to school or picked up a job. Rika's protests about having job already, playing music at a local club for less than a minimum wage that was, fell on deaf ears, her aunt didnt want to hear it.
Rika sighed as she walked down the street, she was certainly not dressed to impressed, while she wasnt messy she was wearing a tak top and Jean's with the knees torn out of them, not exactly what you would call a interview appropriate outfit but it wasnt like she actually hoped to get the job, though the whole shinigami thing did interest her, she wondered if it was a kind of maid cafe thing where the waiters dressed as death gods, if it was it was pretty cool and definately her kind of scene. She continued walking down the street, spotting a young boy on the side walk, "Hey kid you should get home, your parents are probably worried" she said as she thought back to a time when her parents were probably worried about her. The kid just gave a smile and began to skip away, though an ominous jangle-like sound rang out in the air as Rika notice something on the boys chest. "A chain..." she said to herself as the kid skipped around the corner and out of sight, before she shrugged it off as some kind of weird fashion choice. She continued to walk down the street until she stopped in front of the building with "Rest For The Wicked" written on it.
She walked inside a little bell announcing her arrival to the group, seemed like there was a bit of competition for the job, some faces were familiar to her , she knew a few from before she dropped out but the names didnt come to her, most people there probably knew her though, she was the resident drop out after all. Her brown eyes flicked a little in the light as she glanced around, before they fell on the counter. She walked up to it "Coffee, black. Also I'm here for the interview" she said as she stepped off to the side as she waited for her coffee, keeping to herself rather than talking to anyone.
Taeko Suijin
Not seeing any staff in sight Taeko sighed and sat back down to keep watching the door trying to be a bit more subtle about it when the next person to arrive, a girl around his own age noticed his scrutiny and seemed put off by it before loudly announcing that she was indeed also there regarding the ad but only got a shrug from Taeko in response. While the girl was only vaguely familiar the next teen to arrive was well known to him by reputation if not personally, Takahite's general looks and friendly nature had managed to make him one of the 'popular' kids in spite of or perhaps helped by him having moved to the town not too long ago. Shifting awkwardly Taeko quickly averted his gaze from the other boy.
The next arrival was more familiar and more of a surprise. "Oh Lime hi, I didn't think you'd show up here. Are you okay after all that kendo stuff?" Lime had been a friend ever since her mother had pulled a stint working at his parents' business and she'd been a helpful lab assistant once they were in school. "Helping out in the hostel is the only job I'm going to be having in this town. I'm just here to see what this 'shinigami' junk is all about, doesn't seem to be anyone who knows what's going on here though." Craning his neck he watched an older guy who seemed to have gone all in with the interview dress up let himself into the kitchen and return with a whole load of ramen. "Uhh hey do you work here?"
Ren Kazuki walked down the street of the town, his mothers home town. It was late out and dark already, he had his long dark hair pulled up into a man bun and he was wearing a rather nice outfit, but not exactly one that man him look rich or anything. He was the new kid in town so he hoped that his attempts to dress to impress would give him some luck with the girls his age. So why was the 16 year old boy out this late? Simply put he had nothing better to do and late at night was a better time to explore the town as there weren't as many people going around. Of course however he knew the risks, but he was also well trained, his nice clothing and slender frame hiding the fact that he was secretly a power house of lean muscle mass and martial arts knowledge. He strolled carelessly down the street either way so if he did have to beat up some smuck that tried to mug him it would be his own fault.
Ren was, however, beginning to feel tired though and he figured a nice nap might do him good. Then he saw it, his saving grace, a coffee shop. He nearly ran to the door, only stopping for a second to take a look at the name "rest for the wicked", remembering seeing something about a job on a flyer or something. He walked inside to find a small gathering, none of which he knew but most looked around his age, he was sure he would meet them at the school in the upcomming week. He walked to the counter where a man had just played out some Ramen, and assuming cause there wasnt a line all the previous orders had been placed. "Coffee, Medium Roast with 2 sugars and two creams" he said as he pulled money out of his wallet handing it to the man currently serving Ramen.
Ema Narisawa
Ema stood finding no real response back as more found their way inside. Her attempt to make contact with the supposed employer seemed to be a dud! She was more then certain she would of gotten their attention! Then again, perhaps they weren't there yet. It was possible she was earlier then she expected. Her eyes to watch muscles walk by... well at least that was the nickname she came up with. Oh wait, it was that guy... his name was Bruh! Yes that had to be it, he said it a lot it only made sense it was his name! Then again, she couldn't say she really talked to him as much as she recalled him a lot of times saying that name like he was one of those pocket monsters that liked to repeat their names to you. It was cute in an endearing way! A tough guy, much like Bruh though in female form, though perhaps it wasn't fair given she had seen the girl far more getting into trouble. Harumochi? She felt her eyes upon her as she noticed the look giving a bright smile and friendly way as to acknowledge her in her typical bubbly way.
She had nearly missed as another slipped spotting the white haired girl. She tapped her chin looking at the girl questioningly. She did seem familiar, far more then the Bruh guy or even Harumochi oddly enough. She found her look rather cute, not being overly flashy but having a certain look about her she liked! It was like she was some mysterious person trying to hide herself away. The fact she hadn't talked to her seemed strange. It was as if she was avoiding her. Maybe she was just a little shy? Why be shy though, she wouldn't bite! It could be fun to talk to her and introduce her to dressing up! She seemed to have a body like her own that could work in so many different cosplay outfits that she could pull off in her mind better then her! Ooo! Maybe she should go approach her and talk to her and...
Ema's focus on wanting to pester Lime was cut short as she heard a familiar voice. She eyes shined as her smile only seemed to somehow grow bigger in response. Mariya! Being as smart as ever! She felt her hand grip her as she walked with her willingly looking a bit confused in the process as she pulled her to the side to look at a menu. She smiled brightly as she discussed coffee shaking her head.
"Nevermind about coffee, how are you Mariya? OOo you wore your uniform here? I mean you do look quite pretty in it though I don't think this is the place to look like that, unless this shin-o-gummy thing does involve some dress up... that could be fun!"She spoke lifting her arms wide open giving her friend a nice firm hug. Her excitement oozed off her as she lightly rocked Mariya about in her hug as she finally let her go being a bit more touchy then perhaps she would in public typically with the girl. She knew she tended to be a bit more reserved around others, though her excitement and the rather strange place they are at causing her to forget about it. She pulled away smiling at her giving her a thumbs up in response as if to ease up a little bit settling down her voice a bit though still unable to fully contain herself.
"Oh... wait... never-mind the never mind, you should pick out some coffee! I'll just have some water, I don't want to have what happened before happen again when I had some coffee." She spoke laughing lightly referring to a rather... unfortunate incident involving her trying coffee and the caffeine driven chaos that ensued after. She was excited that her best friend had shown up. It made it that much better to her to have her around. She had thought it would be unfamiliar faces though she had to admit there were far more there then she had expected to look so familiar. The blonde's eyes darted back over brushing a strange of her blonde locks to the side to see another good looking and familiar guy. Another girl that entered caught her eye as she leaned in a bit staring at the tattooed and pierced woman unable to help but find her familiar. She swore she could remember her from somewhere. Was it from school? She was pretty sure she would remember someone looking like that at school, perhaps someone who wasn't in their school anymore? She could swear she was in class with the girl before though with her looking a bit different. She turned her head back quickly looking at her friend giggling a bit.
"There are quite a few people here that seem to be from our school! A lot of hot guys too! I bet we can find you a nice boyfriend here if we tried! Ooo any of them you like in particular, I can help you meet them!" She spoke giggling a bit more excitedly her feet lightly kicking back and forth kicking under the table lightly finding great enjoyment at the idea of trying to set her friend up with a boy. She knew she wasn't the best when it came to talking to people and it was only natural Ema, being how she was, wanted her friend to find someone to be with. She was always looking out for others before herself with her family and that same focus extended to her friends as well.
Malina had walked up from the bottom up to the town, already frustrated her anger of not finding anything kept her going, it had been half a year already since she left home to go do her family's stupid tradition but after her parents refused her request to skip the tradition she sucked it up and just pushed on "Honestly this is the last place on earth I would want to go" She said to herself as she used her cane to support herself
As she watched the sun slowly set to rest and wipe the sweat off her brow a loose bit of paper was flying by and smacked her in the face completely covering it "Oi ya bloody shite, who threw this away" She said angrily to no-one around her, she sighed as she wiped her brow and read the paper her eyes widening in shock "Diabhal te! I think I found myself a job I can do and this is a small town, shouldn't be too hard to find this Rest for the Wicked cafe" She said to herself before walking off again looking for the cafe
Two hours later, Malina was back where she had started and night had fallen "Ifreann naofa. How hard is it to find a damn cafe this should be easy" She yelled angrily getting weird glares by the few older passer bys. She just sighed and rubbed her eyes, tiredness from the trek and the walk around had taken a lot out of her and had made her moody she then got an idea "I just got and I call myself a Tulroe if it's a cafe it will sell coffee and therefore I have to just follow my nose"
And follow her nose she did, at first it was mixed with other smells but soon the usual smell of coffee sound entered her nose, it took her along back alleys eventually she opened her eyes as the smell got stronger and there in front of her was The Rest for the Wicked cafe "There we go and mother said learning how to Barista would be a waste of my time" Malina chuckled to herself before she adjusted her clothes, fixed up her hair and walked in holding her bag of clothes and her practice rapier
As she walked in the smell of coffee hit her full force and she smiled "Ah now this is coffee, I hope these Shinigami are just a fancy japanese way of saying Barista" She thought to herself. She looked at everyone already there before taking a bow "Good evening everyone, I am Malina Tulroe the 3rd and yes I am part of the family that runs the Family Roast coffee shop chain, either way I am here for this job application of a Shinigami" Malina says taking a seat "Oh and if any of you rural folk want to order something and can't afford it, I shall pay for you" She said with a sly smile
As Akkun sat in the cafe things started to get interesting. People started to show up one after the other. Some came in loudly and other came in almost as if trying to avoid attention. Either way Akkun tried to avoid caring too much and started playing on his phone. It was a bit curious to him that so many high school aged kids would be out and about at this time of night, not that it was extremely late or anything. Akkun was scrolling through his phone looking at pictures of him and Aiko from a recent day trip they had gone on. On the trip Aiko was determined to get a new pencil case that was more girly than her classmate who had just gotten a unicorn pencil case, but instead she ended up getting having Akkun buy matching phone charms for their phones. So now Akkun had a Hello Kitty charm on his cell phone.
"What am I going to do with her" He laughed as he looked around the now filled cafe. A gentleman had entered the cafe and started to prepare ramen. Akkuns stomach growled as he started to smell the broth. He had eaten a light dinner in order to ensure Aiko had a full belly. After a few minutes the gentlemen served 10 bowls of ramen. No one seemed to have ordered the ramen, so Akkun was willing to take the chance at a meal, whats the worst that can happen. He stood and walked to the counter of the cafe and took a bowl of ramen. "After all they should bill me at the end of the night" he thought to himself as he walked back to his table and started to eat.
The ramen hit the spot and with a sated stomach Akkun began to observe his fellow cafe goers. There were several cute girls in the cafe now and a few dudes. Akkun didn't know any of them and most of the guys looked quite intimidating, even if they were younger than him. The most intimidating one also had the biggest smile. It was a bit perplexing but Akkun decided to act on the side of caution and avoid contact for now. Just then two girls, or maybe one really, began to speak on very friendly terms. After hearing how friendly they seemed Akkun decided to approach them to see if they had any more information. After all, dealing wth them couldn't be any more difficult than dealing with Aiko, right?
"Excuse me" Akkun said as he approached the two girls. One was a blonde and the other had dark hair. "I was wondering if you two were here for the job interview?" Akkun asked as politely as possible.
“Still can’t get over how easily an old man can get around modern technology. Hahahaha!”
“Easy tiger.” Puffs of a failed lighter in the background, someone struggled with it as the laughter on the other end grew. “I’m old not stupid.” One last try caught the sharp exhale of the elder, fire-touched fingers being glared at in favor of shouting internally and not setting the thick blanket on fire. Tonight was definitely not a favorite for him as he returned piercing attention to the touch-screen menace on the small table. I swear I am going to chuck these crap-awful candles soon.
“Hahahahahaha!!! Damn it hurts to laugh!!! - Ahahuhuhu!! Hahahahaha!!!”
Kyoya sweat-dropped at that. What could be so funny anyway? The voice on the other end finally eased up, narrowly avoiding their second choking fit for the night. Again the thought of taking up the gloves as a comedian came to mind. Again it made him frown. He put the lighter out of its misery when the last colored flame whispered to life. Content wasn’t a bad word to describe his current feeling. They sent him a birthday cake a few days early anticipating their temporary leave from town. The cake was a lovely single-layer vanilla special, topped with a crown-and-sword design leaving the icing in a myriad of cold dark tones. Unable to control himself he’d slicked some hard icy goodness off the top before relishing in the coming self celebration ahead. In case anyone wondered what colors tasted like, he sure as heck appreciated the sweetness of the grey that hit with a dull thud. Vanilla might’ve been boring but, the icing combination was crap-damned glorious!
“So… You are serious about it right? About that strange flyer you found?”
“Hm? …Mmm.” Realization tapped his shoulder mid bite, the game of solitaire he’d been winning drawing his eyes along the wall, then finally onto the cartoony clock ticking away. A familiar voice fizzled into the room before abruptly ending with the impact of a coin against the power button… Kyoya sighed, hand still out - fingers poised - and body reeling. Crap near 12 AM and he wasn’t busy sleeping. “Uggghhh…” He rustled his bed hair, rested the dessert fork with a dissatisfying ting, and lazily evacuated the kotatsu. “I should be going.”
Sourly on the point the old man’s momentum slowed to a crawl. The streets were about as lively as any other night in Iminaza. The occasional car, person, and stray. Of course with the glazed atmosphere courtesy of nature’s obscurity he withheld on angry thoughts of the bright light or two as they passed. Kyoya fidgeted the car keys in his pocket. Maybe driving wasn’t wise this time he thought, but at least it would have felt better unexposed to the elements in his state. “Mm.” Wind howled in agreement when he questioned the flyer flailing in his grasp, his curiosity facing up the blade of his growing doubts. Each step toward the open doors just got heavier and heavier. Eyebrow twitching he suddenly felt annoyed. Something was gradually wearing down on him. ...this place.
Scarlet eyes tightened at the scene within the little bar. So that’s it… Kyoya’s left hand left the hinges as he departed for the inside. Kids… and a whole lot of ‘em.
As Mariya sat at the booth with her friend she noticed even more people entering the café. One seemed to be someone that worked here; although she quickly dismissed that idea when the man began making ramen without taking orders. Ramen seemed a strange choice for a café like this and it wasn’t featured on the menu... was the man another person trying to get hired? She supposed it was a good idea to simply show off his skills to whoever was hiring.
Another person she recognized came in next, Rika Ueda. She was a girl that had dropped out of her school. In such a small town someone dropping out was a fairly big deal that everyone loved to gossip about. Mariya had never had a long conversation with the girl, but she liked her. If only because she was interesting. Mariya didn’t know many people that looked like Rika, decorated in tattoos and piercings. It was cool.
Two other men came in that Mariya did not recognize. The dark-haired girl was pulled from her thoughts and people watching on hearing her friend’s voice and her sudden hug. A lite blush came to her cheeks from the sudden warm contact. Mariya wasn’t very used to physical contact like this. Her parents weren’t “touchy feely” so hugs were a rare thing in her household. She had slowly gotten used to hugs from Ema, but they still caught her off guard sometimes.
Regardless she leaned into the soft human connection and answered her friend’s questions.
“I’m good. I sneaked out of my house but forgot to change out of my school clothes. I wouldn’t be surprised if dressing up is involved for the job, but they probably want someone that looks more like Ueda-chan or maybe Sendoh-chan.”
She gave a quick glance at both of the mentioned girls. They fit the atmosphere of the cafe better than her or Ema did.
“Hmm… I wish I could get a recommendation for the coffee.” Mariya said softly as she looked around futility again for someone that worked here. Just then another person entered. A fancy dressed girl with a cane that she was certain she had never seen in town before. The person introduced themselves and Mariya’s mouth fell open in shock. The “Family Roast” was a major, world covering coffee chain.
A thousand theory began flying through her head on why someone like her was here of all places. A family punishment? Banishment? An adventure of sudden whimsy? Aliens? Was she scouting to expand her family’s business and seeing what the local competition was like? Were the illuminati involved somehow?
Before she was able to settle her mind down, it was further through into a whirl wind of thoughts at Ema’s next words.
“B-boyfriend? I… umm…” She didn’t know what to say to Ema’s offer. Rarely did she ever give thoughts to dating or romance. It was something that just seemed… beyond her. She didn’t want to force anyone to put up with… her. There had been boys and girls that she had vaguely thought were “interesting” before, but once she stopped and thought about doing something like dating or asking them out those thoughts and feelings got splashed with a nice cold dose of reality.
“That’s… ok.” Mariya answered softly with a blush to Ema’s offer to help her meet someone. A man she didn’t know approached them then. He was only asking if they were there for the job interview, but her very recent conversation with Ema about boyfriends did not help her with this sudden unexpected conversation with an older male.
“Y-yes…” Mariya answered him quietly, feeling a blush burn her cheeks. Normally she didn’t get flustered so easily, but Ema always did have a way of throwing her mind into a tailspin and the topic being about romantic relationships was something she had no confidence in.
Mariya looked up quickly at the man before casting her purple eyes back down and scooting closer to Ema, hopping the other girl would talk enough for both of them.
Harumichi Sendoh Nothing. Nothing at all. No matter how many times Harumichi would flip through the menu there was nothing that even came close to resembling a clue that explained the concept and purpose of a Shinigami. What even was going on, there's no way any recruitment process for a cafe would be this cryptic, this had to be a front business for a money laundering scheme. Ugh, the whole situation was finally starting to frustrate Harumichi and made her question the decisions she had taken. Sighing with exasperation at her own foolishness Haru finally stood from her seat and turned towards the entrance ready to lea-
"Ready."
...Ah shit, that smelt good. It looked like an older fellow had lined up the counter with bowls of pipping hot ramen, ready to be chowed down by the residents of the cafe. Was this guy part of the staff? Had somebody else ordered these? Was the ramen laced with cyanide? Did she have to pay for a bowl? Wasn't it already stated that Harumichi wasn't hungry during the last post? Who cares, Haru sure doesn't 'cause her face was already deep into the bowl before she could think of any potential answers. Such perfect comfort food to top off a busy day. The noodles were the perfect width, not too thick to make'em cumbersome to slurp down, but also not too skinny to the point where they are barely felt. The chicken broth was seasoned just right, you could drink it down by itself and still have a pleasant experience. The pork chashu was so tender you could've probably been able to cut it with a rusty old spoon. And of course the kikurage, ajitama and green onions, a perfectly balanced alliance of flavors that assaulted the palate without any form of mercy. Bliss, absolute bliss. This truly was the work of a passionate artisan. As she continued to down her bowl nothing could possibly ruin this majestic moment.
"Good evening everyone, I am Malina Tulroe the 3rd and yes I am part of the family that runs the Family Roast coffee shop chain, either way I am here for this job application of a Shinigami. Oh and if any of you rural folk want to order something and can't afford it, I shall pay for you"
Oooooh boy, I spoke too soon. The moment she heard this girl's pretentious tone Harumichi was pulled away from her brief visit to food heaven and shoved back into reality. Haru glanced back at the girl, venom filled her eyes, to the young delinquent people like this chick had always been all bark and no bite, so somebody outta give her a dose of what reality truly tastes like. Haru slowly set down her now empty bowl of ramen, left her seat and approached Malina Twotoe, or whatever her last name was. While for the most part Haru tried the keep a friendlier and laxer demeanor around new people Malina's words struck her in the worst way possible. In the eyes of Harumichi this girl had turned into the rider of the highest horse around and she seemed so delighted to talk down to the rest as if they were some sort of lowborn peasant.
"Okay okay, listen here Cinderella, I don't know what sort of fucking fairy tale you think you've walked yourself into but around these parts calling us 'rural folk' is one of the quickest ways to get yourself a niceeeeeeeee little black eye." Harumichi was standing mere feet away from Malina at this point and she looked ready to charge at her any second now. The whole world around her didn't matter anymore, if this led her to fail the interview then so be it, Harumichi wasn't gonna back down. "So guess what, you can take your little pompous attitude and your wannabe charity and shove-" Before she could finish Harumichi's attention was drawn towards the individual that had just entered the cafe. What was such an old dude doing here? Was he lost? Out of all those presents he was undoubtedly the one that stood out the most. A wide smug grin took its shape on Haru's expression as she came to a realization. "...Oh-ho-ho? Is that your bodyguard or your chauffeur Mrs.High Horse?" Xcelgamer
Ema Narisawa
The blonde was smiling joyfully at Mariya's reaction. The shy expression she gave finally declining only made it seem as if she liked the idea and was only shy about it. Then again, no matter what reaction Mariya gave so long as it wasn't a very harsh response there was a good chance she would of read too much into it and assumed she liked the idea even if words of approval weren't spoke in response. When something was in Ema's head, it was rather difficult for her for the idea to be so easily parted as silly or out there as it may be. Naturally when the handsome guy from before came wandering by to speak it only made her mind work that much harder in favor of her plan to help her best friend find a love interest!
A bright smile was on her lips as he asked about the job interview as Ema was practically squealing with excitement on the inside. Naturally she had some interest in him even if in a very surface level, though for her with the scheme she had going it only seemed as if the stars were aligning. It was only made that much more appart hearing Mariya's response and how meek it was noticing her shy expression. Ema nearly burst out giggling as her feet began to kicking out excitedly before finally placing them on the ground trying to contain her excitement. She watched Mariya scoot closer as she placed her hand around the back of her shoulders giving a little thumbs up to her under the table for her to see while trying to obscure it from Akkun, though to say her gesture was very discrete was a stretch given how easily it likely would of been to see if he just looked at table level with her thumb barely poking out from under it.
"Yes! You're here for the job interview too? I didn't think there would be many handsome young adults here! I'm more then happy to know I might get to work besides a stud like you! Though I guess I shouldn't say too much, my best friend Mariya was far more illa.... arty with her words about you then I ever could be! You should of heard what crazy words she was saying to compliment you! Then I think something about you being her dream date and how she could just imagine her first kiss with you would be.!" She spoke giggling a bit making up a bit to embellish things playing off her own thoughts and attempting to play into Mariya's intelligence, while avoiding trying to bring in words since she hadn't the slightest clue of any big words that made sense. Perhaps she was trying a bit too hard. Despite being rather upfront and open it wasn't like Ema was a great seducer. She tended to be perhaps a little too quirky to attempt that, if she even went to make such efforts. As interested as she was in dating she tended to always put the thought of it on the back burner, after all she had to worry about her siblings.
"Oh, sorry there sweetie, maybe I was getting a little ahead of myself. What is your name mister? My name is Ema, and this beautiful girl beside me is named Mariya. Feel free to sit down if you like. You can sit down next to Mariya if you like, I'm sure she wouldn't mind at all." She spoke shifting away a bit as if to get up to allow him to slip in to take her spot, giving Mariya a very unsubtle wink that wasn't in the slightest bit subtle at all considering how easy it was for Akkon to see as well.
Takahite
Man, it got lively in here quick, like, super damn quick. Now some fellah is takeing orders... Others are fighting right out the gate.... Some were gossiping and talking as if this wasn't wierd. Which it was, really really wierd.
Like did he just walk into a club?
Or maybe a cult?
Theres way to many people though... How dose he know he'll be able to get the job...?
....Wait the job... How many positions are there!?!?!?
What are they looking for when it comes to people?!
Sure hes here to help out and make some cash but hes quickly getting kinda claustrophobic with all these folks here, can't be the good vibe guy when yer drowned out yea know? The old fellah seems to be looking like the type to do this type of job to...
He had taken a seat in a empty booth, trying to figure out what the litteral hell was going on here, as opposed to the figurative one.
He more or less kinda looked like a large bored dog sitting in the corner waiting for something to happen, or somebody to throw a stick.
....
Cafes aren't quite his thing though...
To quiet...
Makes him kinda sleepy...
.......
The atmosphere is kinda like that in a cafe like this....
Yea...
...yea...
....
The soft sounds of snoring soon came from the larger fellah, head resting on the wall next to him as the world continued to buzz around his merry head, dreaming of a dog chasing a cat endlessly through a field of flowers...
Bliss....
But perhaps resignation of his lack of attention of the cafe's going ons.
Akkun was initially taken aback from the foreword response he got from the blonde. He was used to being hit on by girls but this was a knew experience for him. Although he could guess this was all coming from the Ema girl and the terrified, pleading expression of her counterpart, Mariya was more than enough to solidify his theory. Akkun felt a bit sorry for Mariya but was also happy that the two were close enough for this sort of encounter. "I hope Aiko gets close friends like this too." He thought to himself. Now to the matter at hand. The girls were both here for the same job offer but were also seemingly waiting for someone to explain what they were supposed to do. Ema had invited him to join them at their table and it would be rude to refuse if there was no good reason.
"It's good to meet you Ema and Mariya, I am Akkun" Akkun said with a warms smile. It was Akkuns nature to mostly brush off overly brazen comments such as Ema's compliments. "I am very flattered that you think that." He said keeping it purposefully vague and speaking to both females. "I hope that we can be good coworkers." Akkun saw Ema start to get up in order to let him take the seat next to Mariya. "This poor girl!" he though as he casually took the chair across form the two girls and sat down. Akkun quickly started a conversation before there could be any objections from Ema. "Do you all know any of the other people here?" Akkun asked as he took out his phone to check the time. His Hello Kitty charm dangling for all to see.
If there were any indications of anybody in charge it had alluded Akkun. Everyone seemed to just be there waiting for something to happen. It was nice to be in a booth with two other people but they seemed to be at a loss too. What was going on here, there were high school kids, young adults, delinquents, chefs, old men, and now a freaking princess. Akkun was beginning to think a circus had formed around him while he wasn't looking. Then something happened, the first true event of the night. A delinquent girl started to mouth off to the princess and then from what it seemed targeted the older gentlemen that had just arrived. "Crap." he thought. "Am I going to be able to sit around and do nothing?"
Rika now sat on a stool that had been near the counter, almost in the corner out of the way of all the conversation and socializing. While she could say she didn't want to be apart of it all she knew that wasn't true, she hardly had any friends outside of the people she was in a band with and even then she could hardly call them friends, they were more like associates. This was in fact one of the reasons she dropped out of high school, besides feeling like it wasn't meant for her she also had no reason to stay there, aside from having good grades at the time she wasn't in any clubs or clicks, she didn't fit in there. So instead of joining in with the socializing she sat by herself, her lip moving as she used her teeth to play with the back of her lip piercing.
That being said she had begun to recognize some people, she had a vague memory of the bright redhead being in her grade, but she couldn't remember his name, it was something like Taeko or something but she wasn't sure. She then looked over to the noisy bunch over by the table, she didn't know the guy but her eyes widened a little at the sight of the two girls, Jesus... is that Mariya and Ema? I know I haven't seen either of them since junior high but damn... She thought to herself as she looked at how much they've grown, both having grown up to be major hotties. out of the others in the room she didn't really recognise anyone else from her former class but she did spot a couple of what would have been her juniors of seniors. She then laid eyes upon.... Suddenly she was distracted by the sudden entry. The so called heiress to a large international coffee company that Rika had heard of gave her introduction and outright insulted everyone in the room.
Jeez who does she think she is, stuck up snob... was what Rika thought as she began to turn away and just ignore it, but then someone said pretty much exactly what she was thinking. Harumichi Sendoh... Rika thought as she looked at the tough girl, one of the kids she had known to be just as much of a trouble maker as herself when she was young, and continued to be. When they were younger Rika use to look up to Haru in secret as her cool badass senior, though Rika hadn't cared about hierarchy's like seniors and juniors for years now. Rika got up off her chair and walked over placing a hand on Haru's shoulder "Don't, you don't want to lose the job before the interview even begins do you?" she said calmly before adding in "Even if you are right" as she gave a hard glance to the princess.
Malina looked around the room, not much had changed from her deceleration it was obvious that some of them recognized the Family Roast name, a few of them looked at her, two of them had gotten angry with her, as she sat down one of the girls had walked over to her and yelled at her. She just sat there and calmly took it "Tch this girl has no manners what so ever, honestly can't even threaten me correctly" She thought to herself, this girl like other delinquents were usually all talk and once they knew the person they were tormenting wasn't going to back down, they would usually run with their tails between their legs, so let her bark and when I show her my teeth she'll back down.
Malina looked at the girl that had yelled at her and smiled at her right to her face, it wasn't meant to be but the smile looked really condescending, Malina breathed in and out calmly "Madam, if your going to try and threaten or insult someone, at least have the good decency to get the insult looking at least somewhat true. So allow me to help, also I do apologize for the rural folk comment my Japanese is not as good as I thought it was" Her tone was dripping with condensation and her smile didn't help matters at all "So first Cinderella married into royalty whereas I was born into it, so think more Elsa, Anna orrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Jasmine. One of those three would have worked better than Cinderella. As for the fairy tale I walked into, I know exactly the type....it's called reality I'm not looking for a happy ending, I'm looking to help" Her tone had changed from straight condescending to a mix of that and joking "As for the black eye, look at my skin tone, that wouldn't show up very well" Malina continued as the old man walked and what Haru said next set Malina. She stood up straight knocking the chair she was sitting on over "How dare you! You dare assume that I need a bodyguard?" Malina yelled in anger before taking her glove off and slapping Haru with it "Madam, that is my official declaration to challenge you here and now"
Malina put the glove back on her face while now calm, her eyes were aflame with anger she knelt down and opened her suitcase before closing it back up "Right, I didn't pack my sword cause I'd probably have been caught" Malina thought to herself before standing back up and points her cane at Haru "Now Madam, shall we take this outside before or after the interview, or shall you refuse the challenge? Honestly I'd prefer to do this after the interviews but if you are really that angry about me, I'm fine with fighting you right now. Also I believe I said this before but my name is Malina Tulroe the 3rd" Malina says calmly before turning her attention to the girl with partially shaven head "Madam, if I offended you all, I wish you had said it calmly unlike this girl getting into my face and yelling at me about it, I would have calmly apologized for the comment and we could have continued HOWEVER someone assumed that someone I do not know is my bodyguard or chauffeur. Incorrect, I walked up to this little mountain town and I do not need a bodyguard I know how to use a sword and how to punch someone, so why would I need one?" Malina said angrily as she tried not to throw her cane into the floorboards
A sudden dread consumed Mariya’s suddenly fragile soul when she saw Ema’s thumps up from under the table. While both her and Ema were rather free spirited; Mariya was not one to take any form of drastic action unless the situation truly warranted it. This was especially true for social situations and while a lot of the times she said things that other people thought were strange; in her own way, she was careful with her words and how they could effect other people. In addition, she did not like influencing events especially when they involved other people. She preferred to be the observer of things and wasn’t used to being thrust into sudden social events with people she didn’t know.
That was why as Ema spoke her apocalyptic words to the man, if the Grim Reaper himself had come into the café and had harvested her soul right then and there, she would have been thanking everything in the universe and beyond. Instead she was trapped, her eyes slowly widening in absolute horror with every damning word that came from her friend’s month. Her purple eyes were face down in her lap as the strongest and brightest blush of shame and humiliation that had ever existed consumed her face. Never had she ever felt so embarrassed in her entire life! If her body hadn’t been frozen from the shock of what was happening; she would have considered slapping Ema’s fibbing mouth shut!
She barely heard the man’s response through the pounding in her ears. She was eternally grateful that the older boy, Akkun, seemed to take Ema’s words in stride and didn’t push that facet of the conversation forward. He seemed nice and when she was able to move her eyes up from her lap to take a glance at him; she understood why Ema had immediately tried to “start a conversation” with him. He was handsome and Miraya’s eyes looked curiously at the Hello Kitty charm that was on his phone. Most guys would be too afraid to have such a girly charm on their phone. That was… interesting.
She wanted to ask about the charm, but she was still far too shaken and traumatized by Ema’s words to attempt conversation with the man. Her mind was starting to calm back down enough for her to begin theorizing about the Hello Kitty charm on his phone. Maybe it was from a girlfriend? That would be wonderful! Then Ema would have to give up on her attempts and Mariya would be able to relax around him. Although if he did have a girlfriend, he probably would have said so already…
As her mind went back into a panic about if Akkun had believed Ema’s words, a distraction mercifully came into existence. Harumichi was trying to start a fight with the Family Roast girl. Mariya watched with curiosity as the spectacle unfolded however stood suddenly from the booth she was sitting with Ema and Akkun when Malina Tulroe the 3rd took off her glove and slapped Haru with it. An old-fashioned way of starting a fight, but still, very much an effective one.
With speed and swiftness that she rarely showed, Mariya crossed the café and put herself in-between the foreign rich girl and the local delinquent; arms spread wide and body open to attack from either girl. Mariya couldn’t say she was close friends with Harumichi, but she did like the girl and didn’t want to see her potentially get into actual trouble. She also felt sympathy for Malina; clearly, she was a foreigner in a place and environment, surrounded by people she didn’t understand. The poor girl didn’t deserve to get beaten up for not knowing things.
“Please don’t fight Sendoh-san! You could get into real trouble for attacking a foreigner that’s not from town! Plus, the fact that she offered to duel you means she considers you an equal! So, in her own way, she is complimenting you, kinda!” Mariya said pleadingly before twirling around to face the other girl.
“I am Mariya Manoa and I offer an apology for my friend! She was just defending us from your weird words, and I think she said Cinderella because everyone likes Cinderella! This is all just a misunderstanding! So please, don’t fight her!”
Mariya stood facing Malina, bracing herself to potentially try to block off the two quarreling girls if they decided to try and charge at each other. She could only hope that Rika would be able to hold back Harumichi, because Mariya doubted that she would be able to alone.
"Yea I'm fine..." Lime mumbled. Thinking back on getting kicked out of kendo club made her pout a little bit. It had been one of the best hobbies she had ever picked up. She looked forward to it each day like a dog looked forward to its owners return. It was almost unhealthy how much she liked the club. Even on days where the club didn't meet, Lime would go and practice for a couple hours just to enforce the muscle memory in her body. If she didn't do that, Lime would go to the gym. Most of the gym regulars knew her, being one of the few girls her age to go there so often. But what's important was that kendo club inspired Lime to be the best version of herself as possible. Now without that, it was as if there was a hole in her heart, leaving her with sadness and regret.
Lime was jolted out of her thoughts by the loud bickering going on nearby. Lime didn't quite understand why people always devolved to arguing and fighting over nothing. It might've been because she wasn't listening, but surely interviewees didn't fight before there interviews, right? Was it that competitive that they wanted to take out the competition before they had a chance to get hired? Lime wasn't sure, but she didn't want to get eliminated. It would be much easier to disappear for now, and not draw any attention to herself. Maybe this job wasn't worth it after all. Lime almost considering just going home. The only thing that stopped her was having to tell her mother why she came home without actually learning what the job consisted of. Carefully, Lime took a deep breath. She felt her muscles relax, not realizing how wound up she had been. It'd all be ok, she just had to see what the job was about and then go home. Surely they'd arrive soon, the employers.
