Blackwood academy, a private boarding school only fifteen minutes out of town, just far enough to discourage the curious city kids to nosy in and discourage the bored Blackwood students to leave. And if that was not enough, the stone wall surrounding the entire property and the fact that it was a home for delinquents usually was. The children here ranged from pranksters that went a step too far to those who almost burnt down buildings. Of course, there were a handful that had not officially committed crimes, but when a school was full of monsters you should expect them to have colorful legal records.
That was the true purpose of this place. It was not to house and rehabilitate troubled kids like the nearby public thought, it was to act as a safe haven for young monsters as they learned to control their abilities throughout puberty, away from human or hunter eyes. This place came to be a number of centuries ago, and although the building now is a touch uncared for simply due to its age, when it was first built it was the mansion of a wealthy vampire. The master of the property was far from kind, in fact rather paranoid which explains the wall around the property and the fairly large basement catacombs, but he was powerful and respected among his fellow vampires. He was forced to leave the country when the nearby humans started to realize he did not age, so he proceeded to donate it to a friend who then proceeded to turn it into the school for vampires alone, but eventually it started admitted other beasts until it became what it is today.
And what it was today was a place both of freedom and strict rules. You were free here because you could be honest about who and what you were, and under certain circumstances you could even show it without shame. But it was not all about freedoms though, no one was allowed to transform into their true form, you could not leave campus without a teacher present or you were a third/fourth year, magic was forbidden unless you were in certain areas, and countless other regulations that were monster specific. Not that people always followed them to the extent that should be, a year did not go by where at least one student accidentally (or not) revealed themselves to the humans in town. It’s not clear what happens to the humans that happen to catch a monster acting like their true selves, but it’s safe to say that either death or serious mind manipulation occurs. One can only hope that the rule breaking student does not face the same fate.
This was the fear that Lucus Finch constantly lived with. If he broke the rules, would he be killed? Students who revealed themselves to humans were never seen again, everyone knew that and was a popular rumor for Blackwood Academy. This thought often kept him up at night, not that he needed any help in that. Sleep long ago become a rare and often unpleasant experience, his body never wanted to rest anymore, far too busy twitching and jumping at every sound. His body screamed for more than just sleep though, it screamed for food. That was the main problem Lucus faced in his new lifestyle, if he were being honest. The constant gnawing hunger that always felt like it was digesting his insides inch by inch was not worth the handful of positives his inhuman status brought him. At this point in his life, if he was not active, at least one of his arms were always unconsciously gripping his stomach as if the pressure would help ease the pain. It did not of course.
The sole solution to his hunger now was meat. The school provided raw animal meat during lunch since there were numerous ‘things’ that ate raw meat, Lucus only knew a handful of monsters that did this, one of them being werewolves during ‘that time of the month’. As far as he knew however, there were no other wendigos here. Cursed humans forced into the role of a mindless creature with a craving for meat, but not just any meat, human meat. The school naturally did not provide this on a daily basis, but whenever he was feeling particularly weak and near death, which was often, the school would secretly offer him pieces of a fresh corpse. But it was never enough… some primal force within him wanted fresh meat, from humans or at least humanoid people. He wanted the flesh alive, warm, and bloody.
The thought of eating people, dead or alive, disgusted Lucus mentally but physically the very thought made his mouth water. For fifteen years of his life he was a normal human and then after several long weeks of bad luck, and after months that he could not even remember, he found himself back in civilization and was told that if he gave into his ‘nature’ he would have to be killed. It was revolting how common death was to him at this point, he couldn't help thinking about it since he was such a risk to others and other were a risk to him, but thankfully he did not have a conscious memory of seeing anyone actually die before.
But that all changed when Lucus one night, heading back to his room after a late dinner of slightly decomposing flesh of some poor woman and taking the long route as normal, stumbled upon a distressing sight. There, in the middle of the hallway, was a familiar woman. On the ground was Mrs. Palmer, a guidance counselor who also taught mages the art of fortune telling. As far as Lucus could remember, she was always very kind and supposedly she had a talent for foretelling disasters which was surprising considering her perky attitude most of the time. This time though there was no smiles or laughter coming from her, only gagging and a light thump that came from her every time she jolted up and then back down to the floor. She was on the ground, dark hair spilling around her small frame, and her eyes were so wide that there seemed to be more white than color in them. If she could have gotten air, she likely would be screaming based on the way her mouth kept opening and closing.
Feed, his mind shouted at him as his body instinctively stepped forward, wanting to pounce on the weakened woman. Thankfully, the human side of Lucus held him in place but he had to swallow to avoid drooling at the sight. It was disgusting. Fighting his impulse, Lucus turned on his heels and ran back the way he came. He did not know if there was anyone back there, but he was far more likely to find someone leaving the cafeteria than he was on the isolated path that he normally took. And sure enough, after a minute of running that remarkably did not tire out the sick looking boy, as he rounded a corner he almost ran directly into a red headed girl, “Mrs. Palmer!” He started, the introduction likely seeming strange without context. “Something's wrong, she’s- she’s having a stroke or-or I don’t know! I can’t find a teacher but she was chocking and twitching and-”
Lucus looked frantic, his hands were wringing in front of his lanky form and he kept looking around as if by mentioning it a teacher would come running, “I don’t know what to do.” He suddenly whispered to the unfamiliar redhead that was in front of him. He had no reason to believe that this girl knew anything more about medicine than he did, but he was too scared to be alone with Mrs. Palmer after what he had initially thought when first running into her. "Do you know where a teacher is or....?" He left the sentence open, once again not knowing how to finish it.
The girl was curvacious, but a bit short, standing at about five foot nine. She wore a red v-neck shirt, light denim jacket, jeans and black tennis shoes. "What?! Miss Palmer?!" The redheads Violet eyes widened, her right eye behind her bangs. With those eyes, she clearly wasn't human. But asking her what exactly she was was for another time. Her usually cheery often shy voice now sounded a bit broken with fear. "I-I don't take medicine courses, I wouldn't know what to do!" The redhead became frantic with the news that such a nice lady was dying not far from there! She looked up to the boys face. "Take me to her, I'll see if I can do anything!" She would hate to see the woman die. Miss Palmer had helped a great many students, herself included learn to calm their tempers. Her death would shake the entire school, most likely!
