Chitchat Biggest RP pet peeve?

Hiya, everyone!
^;3^

We all have that one thing (or multiple things) that people do that annoy the heck out of us when we are roleplaying.

Mine would have to be when people dwell on a topic or scene for too long that does not benefit the roles! You know, the people who spend 8 responses talking about sitting on the couch and watching TV... I guess I'm just one for action and keeping things interesting!

So, what's yours?

Oh my, well, I suppose that I have a list of them. Short as it may be, however....my biggest one is...

When other's do not pay attention to other's posts and reply in a way that makes no sense to the current situation.

Example:

I was doing a D&D style RP, and the group came to a toll road. One of the group decided that they, with little provocation would threaten and nearly attack the NPC, who had their child next to them. Ok, that was actually fine, my character went into a long distracting speech about how the guild they worked for would not let them carry gold as it made the guilds agents targets for bandits. So, naturally they could not pay the toll, but let the toll-man know that if he left his name the guild would pay him handsomely for letting their agents go about their mission and task. Everyone bought it, and went well until the GM posted the NPC response, along with their characters response. The toll keeper decided to buy the lie, but decided that they would be paying their toll on the way back. After my character had just told him they carried no gold, and he accepted that. Then, their character (who was leader of the group) decided they were just going to pay the toll anyway and move along, again right after my character just convinced everyone there that they had no gold on them.

At that point I knew that I was simply not going to fit into the RP, details were not being paid any mind, just to keep the story moving. It really rustled my jimmies so to speak.

I have had that happen to me, too. Group RP's are always tricky! You've got to find the perfect one for you.

I have a fair few (like saying your character can't do something like flying then the next post you have them flying -.- and romances being jumped straight into instead of building them up) but my biggest has to be when someone makes up a backstory for your character without your permission. Like you have an OC who you prefer to reveal such things in pieces but your partner can't abide by this and starts to make stuff up. Ugh.

Another (because this also bugs me) is people who don't stick to their characters description. Don't describe them as being really shy, innocent and helpless and then play them the complete opposite. I can understand if their personality changes gradually through interactions and plots, but don't create one character only to play another.
(Rant done)

Oh. My. God. This. Absolutely this. *twitch* Seriously, people, read. Please read. In fact, please don't type unless you've read it two or three times. No, really... at least twice in case you missed something the first time. And if you still miss something, and you get called out on it, don't get all pissy about it. Just fix it and move on.

Mine would have to be when people dwell on a topic or scene for too long that does not benefit the roles!

Also this, although to a lesser degree than the first.

And I have a couple of my own to add!

1) I have serious issues with common grammatical mistakes. Improper use of apostrophes is a -particularly- big peeve of mine. Mixing up words is another one (Your vs You're, Their vs. They're vs. There, etc.). I think that's partly due to the apostrophe thing, though, seeing as how 99% of these errors are contraction-related. But really, guys, don't abuse apostrophes. Use them where they belong, and they will be happy.

2) Code. I hate code SO MUCH. The color and font changes people make are just annoying, not helpful, and it's even worse when they go into things like backgrounds, dropdown menus, and scrollbars. It's the very definition of, "Look! A distraction!"

Either of the above immediately turn me off to a RP. Thankfully, both of the above are typically noticeable in the very first interest check post that the creator makes, so I never have to worry about it. If I see an interest check that looks really awesome except that the creator misused the word, "your," I ignore it. I never read far enough to find out if an interest check would be fun or not when there's code involved. I see the code and just 'nope' out of it.

generally i'm pretty easy going, since i understand not everyone is made perfect.
but for the love of god, if you're going to abandon, please tell me.

That does sound annoying, a little warning would be nice. Just like when ppl bail in the middle of a raid.

i ditch, and have been ditched.
but have the courtesy to tell them you're not replying anymore, so they don't wait forever.

If it makes you feel any better, I think people who ditch without notice are actually trying to just avoid a conflict about it. I don't think they're trying to be mean or anything.

Confession: I ditched a 1-on-1 without notice because I couldn't figure out, for the life of me, how to broach a problem that I could tell was going to be ongoing without it causing negative drama. =( I feel bad, but I didn't know what else to do.

that's why i say from the start, if you're going to ditch, tell me!
it doesn't upset me in any way, it actually helps ease my mind about it.
but not gonna lie, i had this really amazing fallout rp with someone; i was so excited about it.
they ditched after about 5 replies and haven't heard from them since.
broke my poor little heart.

I feel that way about some of mine, too, but mine have all been group RP's that have died within a few posts. Sad. A couple of them had really awesome potential, too. I've got two start-ups that I'm kind of getting involved in right now, and I'm just hoping to high heaven that they don't die.

Ugh, I hate when that happens. Its why I'm reluctant to join groups now, even though I love them. Real life always gets in the way, or time differences start messing things about, and if one person disappears mid interaction it's difficult to decide where to go from there.

Just to let you know I am done posting. :D

...or time differences start messing things about...

This, I'm discovering is a big problem for me. I'm posting during business hours. Nobody else is active during business hours. People have school or work, and they're busy. People are mostly active overnight and on weekends. Me? I'm never here overnight and on weekends. I -only- post during business hours... so I come in, read what was written while I was gone, post my one post for the day, and wait another 24 hours to post again because nobody else posts before the end of my time. Overnight - or worse, over the weekend - people are posting away, and I get left behind. =(

I know exactly what you mean. I'm working on UK time, so I notice a lot of the activity on here is overnight for me, which I can't do with College and family obligations that require me getting a full night's sleep -.- It's a pain, and I try to make it work - but it makes RP more of a task than i'd like it to be.

1. Metagame and Godmod
I cannot staaaand it when someone controls my character, even going so far as making them speak or move. I equally despise roleplaying with someone who tells me up front "oh by the way you won't be able to counter any of my characters moves or attacks and you can't harm them because they're a super-goddess-ninja"

If you want everything to go your character's way, write a story, not a RP.

2. Code

It's hard for me to read normal text, let alone custom text. My eyes just aren't that great!

Exactly. =( And a disappointment.

I'm rather new to forum RP in general, and while I have some experience as a DM in other mediums, I'll admit to being a bit hesitant to start my own RP... but I've considered it. I think it would be interesting to design a RP such that once-a-day posting of lengthy, plot-progressing posts is expected, and posting more often than that is frowned on. Adding more information on the same day would consist of editing an existing post rather than adding a second one. Honestly, I think it's about the only way I could keep up, but... well, I'm nervous about trying to develop and DM such a thing.

I'm -so- glad I'm not the only one!

Its definitely more fun when characters have weakness/fears to overcome. Playing a "Mary-sue" would be fun for a minute but I'd image it would have to get pretty boring after awhile.

Yes I agree! I think part of the FUN is trying to think your way out of situations that your character is not equipped to handle. And if you FAIL, it's an opportunity for growth!

To be fair, this soothes my OCD about the whole thing! xD

Worst thing -.- Or when you're even in the process of creating characters and they decide yours should be this and that. No. I'll create my own character to fit what we've, unless I specifically ask for your input.
