Beyond Effort

Markus Crane was held the reins tightly, so tightly his knuckles began to whiten as he tried to get his carriage up this awfully steep hill.

"Come on, we can get through this. Come on-come on-come on!" His concentration was admirable, and his dedication was never steered away. Nothing could stop him to getting Pap-pap back to shape.

Except,

"Markus come here and help us!" His wife Diane shouted from the back, her hair was unkempt, her dress tattered, and her daughter Eleanor was not better. Despite being known be one of the fairest girls in town, the amount of mud and dirt that they trudged through earlier made her look like a farmer's pig.

A pretty farmer's pig, nevertheless, but still.

"How is pap-pap, Sid?" Eleanor yelled in the carriage.

"Pap?" The youngest, Sid poked his grandfather on the shoulder.

"Stillll kicking!" A raspy voice yelled from within.

"Thank goodness. Earlier he was making these weird noise." Eleanor said in a hushed tone.

"He always makes weird noises dear." Diane replied.

"Does he?"

"Hyuuuugh!"

"...not that." Diane said with a worried tone and continued pushing.

"I see it! The Great Tree, I see it!" Markus yelled from the front.

"Oh do you, dear?" Diane yelled back.

From the sky and high above that, they watched. Being twins like they were, wearing equal masks yet in different shapes, they watched the scene which played out below, as if it was a great piece of theatre. The both of them held hands, the Trickster God and his Lady Death. They had been walking on a thin line, arms stretched out and one foot before the other when they had heard the noises of shouts from the realm of mortals, though even if they did not care for moral life, for everyone had their problems they still had their duty. Even if it was a shallow one.

"I want it." Lady Death said, in her black dress and tight sitting corset, with the veil over her dark hair which matched the Trickster. He let go of her hand and she would take one thoughtful look at him, before handing him her mask and fall of the great line which they had danced upon. She fell, fell and fell until she touched the ground, on the road not far away from the mortals carriage, laying upon the ground with her pale face and eyes shut, as if hit by lightning and taken by death.

(Dayum D: That was cool :3)

"Hahah, we did it! We made it! We made it to the-"

SPLAT!

"Sweet mother of Odin what the?!"

"Something wrong, father?" Eleanor yelled out.

"I think I found a dead someone!"

"PAP-PAP?" Diane about yelled in a shrill voice.

"Nooope!" Pappy called out.

"Come to the front, Eleanor stay with your grandfather!

"What about me?" Sid called out.

"You too."

"D'aww!"

As soon as they approached the body, the wagon stopped, and then Markus and Diane walked to the body.

"Ma'am?" Diane asked softly.

"Hush child, she's dead. Best to scoot her aside and move along, must be the poor souls who were just about to make it to them too...."

(Thank you~)

At the sound of someone calling her name, or perhaps her state of being, Lady Death's eyes fluttered open like the wings of a eager butterfly of a unusual blue glow. Her eyes stared up towards the depths of the sky, as far as her mortal vision could reach and yet she could not spot the God who always held her hand when she carried her mask. Lady Death's eyes darted to the side and he noticed they who had called her by her name, or state of being. Her painted lips - which were red as blue by natural hue - curled upwards and as if being a puppet on a string she sat up, straight backed with head held high, without taking her eyes away from the flavourful mortals.

"I appear to be lost." She said, her voice soft and innocent yet it carried great experience and sense of will. he placed her gloved hand above her knee, flatted her skirt out and rose to her feet with great ease. "I also appear to have fallen." she pointed upwards with a slender finger. "And you appear to be in a hurry elsewhere."

"GAH!" Diane hid behind Markus, who he himself turned a little pale at the sight of a woman who practically died in front of them, and just sat up as if she merely tripped and fell.

"Mother? Something the matter?" Eleanor called out.

"Did someone die?" Sid asked, it was unnerving because he sounded rather excited about it.

Markus scratched his head and squinted one eye, completely confused.

"Uh, would you like to come with us?" He asked, and almost immediately Diane smacked his shoulder.

"Ow!"

"We have no idea who this person is! For all we know, under these circumstances it could be lady death herself, surviving such a fall!" She said in a very hushed voice.

"Ah, boodlesnatch-- she probably has good bones. She's a lovely lady and I bet she means well." He said, scratching his beard as he looked at the lady. "Right?"

Lady Death smiled when her own title reached her ears, though with a bow of her head and knees she greeted the company, without quite knowing who they were ant where they were going. She would gladly joined them, as following they who could bring her to easy pickings was far more useful than simply walking or strutting from far behind.

"It would be very kind of you to let me join, my good sir." Lady Death said as she pulled on her gloves and straightened her dress out. She reached her hand towards the mortal who seemed to have had nothing against her being there, in an attempt to be aided forth.

Diane threw her arms up from pure exasperation, walking back to the group as Markus held the lady's hand and escorted her to the carriage.

"Pardon my missus. She's becomes hysterical at certain points. She's a lovely lady, I swear." He said, letting her inside the carriage.

"Family, Madam. Madam, family." He said, as the rest of the family are entirely one side of the carriage, in what seems to be them trying to distance themselves from her.

"You're not dead!" Sid called out. Diane placed a hand on his mouth, who attempted to talk still. Diane merely gave an awkward smile.

"Now--- onwards!" Markus exclaimed as he left the family to Lady Death so he can move onward.

Lady Death stepped inside the carriage, and gave the family a smile from ear to ear - rather ominous one might even add. She straitened her dress and took a seat, her eyes falling upon the window with every heartbeat. No matter the weather, gloomy or bright, Lady Death would always smile with spite. She looked upon the family, dreary as they seemed and questioned herself, and silently she begun to speak. "I travelled far" Lady Death said. "I suspect you are about to do the same." It was not a question, merely a statement, yet the Lady never stopped her cheeks from aching. The smile which had grown, larger and larger, stayed upon her face as her brother vanished without a trace.

"W-why, yes." Diane said, clutching Sid against her, who seemed unaffected by all this. "We traveled a long way.... for us to reach our destination." She said, as Eleanor straightened herself, as she attempted to speak as hardened as she can, her face stern but her hands and knees shaking. "And we will not be drifted away from it." Diane looked over with wide eyes but no words came out. Eleanor continued: "No matter who or what may be in our way, we are going to do our best to get Pap-pap better or we'll die trying." She said. That's when Diane finally spoke out. "Eleanor, enough!" She then quickly turned to the lady. "Sorry-- we're a bit on edge... we usually don't see... normal... people survive such a height. And to coincidentally fall on our hands is also a bit of a concern." She said, giving off a weak smile.

"I bet they're getting along swimmingly." Markus said, rubbing his chest-long scruffy beard. Giving a nice hearty 'haha!'

"Oh, but I am no normal person." The young woman said, her smile growing longer and longer by the second. She peered between the mortals and then let her eyes dart towards the sky. Her brother was no where to be found. She looked back down and placed her hands with in her lap. She knew very well what could occur if she told mortals the truth, yet she felt that their kindness had to be rewarded in one form or another. "Pardon my manners, I am Lady Death; Phobia." She snickered, placing a finger in front of her painted lips and hit her sharp yet very white teeth.

Diane was holding onto her every word, leaning in closer and closer as the anxiety grew. And when she finally released the news, Diane just stared at her as the pieces came-- and fainted.

Eleanor in the other hand, was leaning away and when she heard, her mouth dropped. Then when she say her mother faint, she placed a worried hand on her shoulder, yelling, "Mother??.....Mother!!"

Pap-pap had the same general reaction the ladies did, but he grew aggressive for someone who is clearly dying. "Oh no, you're not takin' none of us!" He yelled, waving a shaky fist at death herself. And Sid just simply smiled and said, "Cool!"

"What's going on back there?!" Markus yelled from the front.

Lady Death could not help but smile towards the family's different reaction. It was always fun, speaking to mortals for they never acted in the same way as the rest - she figured it all depended on their age and how greedily they clung on to life. She snickered and waved a hand dismissively. "I do not actually bring people to my realm on my own! How would that look? I'd have to be everywhere, at the same time!" She apparently found their judgment to be very funny and had to continue snicker to herself for a good few minutes before she went completely silent and a expression of grave seriousness built up on her face.

"My little pets does that for me." She then pointed out the window and for a short moment of time lifted the shroud which was human logic and shadow like creature, leaping around in a purple coloured fog could be spotted, small, tall, lumpy, slender and all with long horns - some longer than others, but it all looked a bit like the horns of a moose.

Diane is like, legit passed out. Eleanor patted on her cheeky lightly, then more rougher, then gave a serious slap across the face with a resounding 'FWAP!' as her mother sits up with eyes widened as if she heard.

Then almost immediately Eleanor shook Diane's shoulder and pointed out the window at the peculiar creature and murmured, "I think I'm going to be sick." And Diane's apparently only form of coping and self defense is to... yet again, faint.

Sid raised his arms in trying to reach out the window. "Ooh, can I touch it? Can I touch it?" Meanwhile, Pap-pap became delusional and formed his index fingers to a 'T' and started spouting out what is supposed to be Latin, but it was only gibberish in the end.

"So! Who of you would like to join me to the world of the Gods and the realm of the dead?" Phobia asked in great happiness and slight joy. She enjoyed tricking people and to scare them as much as the next god - even if her brother was far better at both - but that did not mean she disliked their company, as her brother did. She swayed her legs back and forth where she sat and watched the family with a gentle tap of her fingers against her skinny legs.

"Markus! MARKUS. MARKUS!" Diane yelled, each time getting louder and higher in tone. Almost like it was in octaves.

"What?!" He yelled at the front. "I'm trying to save pap-pap from dying here!" He said, as the carriage moved in a casual pace, as he began to leisurely pick his nose.

"Stop the carriage! Now!" She said, going completely hysterical. Eleanor just simply bared her teeth at death.

Pap-pap actually had gotten really tired from all the drama and actually just passed out, falling asleep.

Sid is excited as always.

An annoyed expression grew on the little woman's face, showing a pair or rather sharp fangs which cut past her painted bottom lip like a cheese knife. "You did not respond to my question, I hate when people do not respond to my question. Perhaps I should just take that dying old man with me, after all... dead people is such a downer." She snickered like a happy little school girl and swayed back and froth as a squirrel jumped through and landed upon her lap. She shouted out in surprise and glee as she placed the squirrel on top of her knee.

"It seems as if I have little time." the girl said, smiling from ear to ear - showing off her sharp fangs. "Perhaps one of you would like to discuss this at my home turf, or shall I simply take all of you over for a cup of tea?"

The squirrel did nothing, he merely sat and watched the family with pearly black eyes.
