    Margot McRae was born into the all-American stereotypical family. Her parents, James and Lillian, were high school sweethearts. She grew up with an older brother, Michael (though she always called him Mikey), and a dog in a house with a white picket fence in a quiet Connecticut suburb. Her family went to church every Sunday, the whole nine. While it seemed like the dream to most, to Margot, it was suffocating.
    
    It's not that her family mistreated her, they just didn't understand her.
    
    She was too bold, too nosy, too flirtatious. "What would people think?" is the question her parents always asked her. Frankly, Margot didn't care. What was the point of living your life based on what others thought? She cared much more about her own happiness, after all, it was her life. Of course, this was always a source of tension in the household.
    
    So, naturally, she left home at 18, choosing to go off to college in Los Angeles. While she was there to learn, she primarily chose to go to college as a means to go far from home and get true freedom. While she always had an interest in the world around her, college truly opened her eyes. It led her on a path to journalism. She had always liked writing, so this was the perfect career to combine her interests. Once she graduated, she remained in the city. It was tough finding a consistent job, so she forged into freelancing which turned out to suit her lifestyle quite well.
    
    Freelancing allowed her to travel when she wanted, cover the topics that interested her, and set her own schedule all while being paid.
    
    And that is how she ended up at Beauly Manor. She only meant to stay for a few weeks to cover a story, though what it was has long since become fuzzy in her memory. It was strange. The days blended into weeks, the weeks into months, and the months into years. There was an itch under her skin occasionally, telling her she'd been here for too long, that she was not meant to stay isolated for so long, but things were so easy at Beauly, she just couldn't quite make herself do it. Those moments were few and quickly fleeting.

  Reclusive and preferring his own company over that of others, Lucas has a cautious tendency and a subdued presence. It’s not uncommon for him to fade into the background—often stepping back to observe and taking everything in—but he isn’t too picky about his inevitable role as the mediator in any given group of people. Skeptical of others, very rarely trusting, it’s become difficult to know where he stands. It could be the monotony in his voice, the way he nearly never speaks up no matter how pressing the matter, or a short and awkward response, it’s easy to assume he’s no more than tolerating his friends. Lucas keeps himself at a distance in a way that is never intentional, and it can hinder his relationships. He always sees the worst in any given situation and may be eager to simply give up—over-relying on others to motivate him, which can cause others to be impatient or even a little annoyed.
  
  Exceedingly loyal, Luc’s never left behind anyone that he’s cared for, and may have looked after and worried for even more than he does for himself. People are the one thing he won’t neglect. His compassion shines through the most, making him a well-meaning person who may be able to stand up for others but not always himself.

  Once it was believed that Elise Francis and Robert Chambers loved each other, sneaking out during the dark recesses of the night, surrounded by Virginia woods and living the perfect small town dream. Their relationship was, in a word, dysfunctional; tied together by alcohol and the want for something more than what their small town could give them.
  
  Lucas Francis-Chambers was the making of drunken madness and subsequently kept the two together through some bearing of responsibility. No photos of their wedding were ever on display, because there never was a marriage. Their light dimmed and flickered above them, eventually dying out in fiery sparks. It was the last time they would see it, and when Lucas was barely old enough he already had an idea of his role in their lives. A burden, words spoken from his mother, taking out her regrets before Luc could fathom the reason why. Although he couldn’t help but disbelieve it, Lucas’s father often reminded him that his mother’s slurred words should never be taken to heart.
  
  Lucas lived his early childhood silently, tiptoeing his way around his mother until the brief moments she had changed her mind about him. He struggled tremendously with socialization, a development that would consequently follow him for the rest of his life. Isolating himself from other children, refusing to speak, spending entire days by his lonesome. When he got home, a dust-coated record player kept him company, and blocked out the noise. Lucas only sang to himself, replayed the music to himself all day in such a way that he was oblivious to the world around him. He hummed the chorus and memorized the lyrics.
  
  For a while there were no more empty glass bottles, yet the bickering increased tenfold. Andrew Francis-Chambers was introduced into Lucas’s life (and unfortunately their family) as his baby brother, and it turned out their mother felt a similar way about Andy, too. A burdensome child whom she was not equipped to deal with, bringing about the downward spiral of her mental well-being, spouting threats to leave and never come back. At heart she had loved her children, somewhere within, but there was not a desire to express it enough that Luc would ever believe her, no matter how she attempted to make up for it. His parents fought amongst each other, too, about small things, about how they would keep up their mortgage and the right way to raise a child.
  
  Eventually, Elise Francis lost the custody of her children and sought out her dream of starting fresh in New York city. Lucas would never see her again. Andy would never remember his mother’s face. And their father found himself so busy that the the responsibility of Andy was cast on Lucas at eight years old. His father was stoic and unemotional, Lucas had lost a conflicting source of support, the home quieter than ever save for his baby brother, and a parental figure who he briefly looked up to gone from his life. He shut down. His grades plummeted and it seemed they would never improve, he begged to see her again even though he knew he couldn’t, and his classmates began to find his behavior odd and would pick him apart.
  
  Lucas was more of a father to Andy than his actual father ever was, and his best friend. When Lucas got older he made desperate attempts to fit in. He met his friends in middle school—they were all in love with music—and by high school, they played their band covers in a rotting garage. He was finally living the dream, or he thought so, because his social life was finally beginning to look up (but his academic life definitely wasn’t.)
  
  They practiced until the neighbors cussed them out and they had to switch to acoustics, leaving Lucas and his long-haired bandmate to themselves after the rest of them had already gone home. Laughter was the backing to the strumming of nonsense, passing a cigarette back and forth, the meeting of cupid’s bow lips beyond the dim horizon.
  
  A strange unfamiliarity sat with him in the days that followed. Even though their secret would die with them, Lucas still tore his reflection apart. Caught between the tides, he fell for a woman by the name of Daria, and with the intention of forgetting the way he felt that night. Like him, she was an artist, and the first person who believed in his talent on a deeper level than his social reject group of friends. Daria was the love of his life and the reason he moved to NY with her to pursue his fine arts degree. Her presence ignited joy in Lucas for what seemed to be the first time, and she was the only person he was truly comfortable with.
  
  Months away from when the two were expected to graduate, Daria was allured by someone else, so that was the way she would likely put it. Lucas knew she was bullshit. The relationship they built crumbled in that very moment, and him along with it. He began to rot away, with Daria’s half of their shared apartment now bare, with little evidence that it was once lived in.
  
  One day Lucas got a call; Their half-assed band from highschool was reunited as Adore, needing him as lead guitarist. For the next two years, they traveled the country, playing in bars and in basements, taking hallucinogens, and living blissfully. When Adore’s guitarist was arrested for an ounce of coke in his truck’s glovebox, it tore the band apart, each member either moving away or being stuck where they were.

At the height of the Roaring '20s, Louis had it made - steady work, great pay, and an apartment with a view in the greatest city in the world.

Louis is a well-groomed young man, though he often seems low-energy, as if worn down to the brink of exhaustion by unseen forces. Those at Beauly Manor who know him well recognize a thoughtful nostalgia in his rich brown eyes, but he's never said for what - and long-time residents know better than to ask. He's generally agreeable and friendly, but evasive when questioned on his past. Louis is rarely seen without a Woodbine cigarette between his fingers. He speaks with a heavy Transatlantic accent.

Vices: Louis has always been a heavy smoker, though that is a minor issue compared to his greed and manipulative nature. Self-destruction led Louis LeGrande to Beauly Manor.

Post-grad life and settling into his new job couldn't have gotten off to a stronger start. He was immediately making more money than he could have dreamed before 30, rubbing elbows with the Rockefellers and Fords of the world, and planning with Rose to have their first child. Despite his good fortune, that first taste of real high society was intoxicating, and he was addicted to the prospect of more.

Louis always had a natural way with people, and because of that, he earned the trust of Atlas clients easily. That was why the Sicilians - through a chain of connections to Atlas' higher-ups Louis knew better than to ask questions about - sought him out to move forward a laundering scheme they'd concocted. He never knew the deeper details, but his part in the plan was simple enough. Convince new investors to funnel cash into phony businesses the Mob was propping up, and he'd be rewarded a percentage of what they sent back as a "finder's fee." The Sicilians made sure investors got back just enough to make continuing worthwhile on their end, Louis got to report the good news, everyone was happy. Louis had goals he was expected to reach, and for the most part, smashed them. His role meant the Mob was willing to lend him luxuries on the cheap, cash for new cars, home appliances, anything he wanted.

When the market started to turn in '28, and entered a historic nosedive in '29, his legit and illicit income streams dried up. He couldn't find folks willing to invest, and when folks weren't giving money, he was suddenly a liability for the Mafia. He knew about their scheme, but without being a made man, they couldn't guarantee his loyalty. Debt started to pile up, to the banks and to the mob. By 1930 he couldn't make rent, Atlas was facing total bankruptcy, and with Rose expecting a child, household expenses weren't getting any lower in the future. When mobsters started showing up at his door, Louis finally broke.

He cut and ran in the spring of 1930. He turned up to Beauly Manor with a single suitcase and the clothes on his back.
