A Brief History
The history of the Inner Sphere begins to diverge from our own in the aftermath of the Cold War and the beginnings of an age of exploration in space. The most important part of this exploration occured on September 3, 2107, when faster-than-light travel was realized with the voyage of the TAS Pathfinder to the Tau Ceti star system. This expedition resulted in the first planetary colony outside of the Terran solar system was established there, kicking off the Era of Colonization. Some one hundred years and 600 colonies later, the problem of governing those far flung colonies became more and more difficult, and the colonies began devolving into rebellion and the first beginnings of neo-feudalism and the current states as, so far from Terra, they began attempting to govern themselves, until the founding of the Terran Hegemony.
In 2398 the Free Worlds League and the Capellan Confederation went to war, officially starting the one and a half century period known as the Age of War. The war's end left the Inner Sphere with the Ares Conventions, the legitimazation of warfare as "diplomacy by other means", and the Star League.
