Pain.

That was all Hunter felt. And then there was darkness. Sweet, peaceful darkness. And Louise's face. And his arms holding her, like he always did when she was upset. And then there was noise. Beeps and crying and her father shouting at God. Too much noise. She just wanted to go back to sleep. And so she did, for a while. She wasn't sure how long.

--

Thee noise was back. There was less of it this time. Just the quiet rhythmic beep of machines. Hunter opened her eyes, but nothing happened. It was still so dark. "Hello? Could someone turn on the lights?" It hurt to talk. Her throat was raw but for the moment, that was the only pain she felt. She heard the flutter of movement and then someone was holding her hand, "Hunter? Hunter, baby? Oh my god you're awake!" Her mother's high pitched voice reached her ears. "Jared! Jared, honey, come quick! She's awake!" Hunter felt hot tears splash against her skin. Her mother was hysterically, her father thanking God. And all Hunter wanted was to go back to sleep.

--

Fire. Her legs were on fire. It hurt so bad. And she was screaming. And there was shouting and more crying and oh God, it hurt! Kill me, she thought. Just kill me now.

--

The next time she woke up, she was fully aware of the nurse standing by the machines that surrounded her. She could hear their breathing, feel their presence. She sat up, slowly, afraid to feel the searing pain from before.

"Hi, Hunter, sweetie. I'm Stephanie." The nurse had come to stand right beside her and was fiddling with something on her IV. "I'm your nurse. I've been with you since you've been in. Would you like me to fill you in on what's happened?"

Hunter nodded, barely moving. The last thing she remembered was the headlight's glare burning into her retinas and then the darkness.

"Well, right now your parents are home. They've been here for a solid week with barely any sleep. I finally convinced them to go home and rest. But let's go back." There was the scraping of a chair against the floor. "The night of your friend, Louise's memorial service, you out. You remember that right?" Hunter nodded. "Well, sweetie, you were hit by a car. Luckily, none of your major organs were damaged. You broke both of your femurs but with extensive physical therapy, you'll be able to walk again. Not quite so luckily, you sustained a pretty good head wound. We had to go in for surgery and they did the best they could, but there was so much bleeding and damage. You lost the function of your optic nerve. You won't ever be able to see again."

Shock filled Hunter. She couldn't breathe, couldn't speak. Her heart was racing, her head pounding. "Okay. Okay, maybe that was too much. I'm going to put you back under now, okay? Shh, it's all going to be okay."

--

"Honey?"

Hunter stirred. "Momma?" She opened her eyes and was met with the same darkness that filled them when they were closed. She groaned and squeezed them shut, trying to keep tears from leaking out.

"Hi, baby. How are you feeling?"

"How do you think? I'm blind, Mom. And I can't feel my legs." Hunter could feel the anger building up. Good grief, how could things get any worse?

"I know. I know how frustrating this must be."

"No. No you don't. Just stop, okay? Stop talking. Because you dont understand what I'm feeling at all. I am scared and I am tired and I miss Louise."

"I know-"

"Stop saying you know!" Hunter exploded. Hot tears were pouring out of her eyes now and she couldn't think. "Just get out, okay? Please just go!"

And so her mother went, and Hunter regretted yelling at her the moment she heard her sniffles receding.

--

She was alone, had been for a good hour. She had sat up and felt around her surroundings. She had three pillows and a nice sized bed. She didn't know much else about the room other than that there was a nightstand beside her and a monitor on top of it.

After she did that she sat in silence. Waiting. She didn't know what for. And then she smelt something. A smell so familiar and comforting. A smell that only belonged to him. Footsteps echoed on the linoleum.

"Louise?"

He cruelly smiled as she whispered the other boy's name with her trembling lips. Hopelessly seeking the dead man. She was no better than that bitch that held onto her fantasies of a resurrection.

But then again. Everyone had believed the transparent lie so willingly...what was he to do?

He silently walked up to the limp body, and placed his hand gently on her quivering cheek. Bandages were tightly wrapped around her useless eyes, as she aimlessly twisted and turned seeking him.

The girl had grown up beautifully...a little too innocently. It was not a wonder that she would have been one of the precious objects that other boy would have so shamelessly stolen away from him. He closed his eyes remembering the familiar searing pain he felt the night when he saw the other boy walking with the girl back to their homes laughing together arm in arm. A normal life...had been all he had wanted. But they had to steal that away from an innocent child as well.

But now...that "searing pain" had been replaced with nothing. Just emptiness. A cold, bare heart callused with wounds of the past.

His hand dropped down wiping the tears off on his pants, as he stared down coldly at the girl that sobbed out the other boy's name.

What exactly had been so good about that boy. They had been both born as innocent creatures into the cruel world that selected it's prime choice and threw away the rest into a forgotten wasteland.

His fingers slowly reached for the girl's throat as rage consumed his mind. This girl...it was stupid of him to have thought that she would have been any different. Like the rest she had been easily bewitched by his brother's curse, following him like a brainwashed dog. Not even being able to tell the difference between the monster and a human. Everyone called out the name of the other boy with love while his name...was equivalent to a curse.

Suddenly, he heard the door slide open, and he regained his senses dropping his hand right as his fingertips grazed the sides of her neck.

"Hun-....oh Louise? Y-you already came?"

Hunter's mother. Her lips were curved into a forced smile, and fear quivered in her eyes.

The woman already knew that he was a imposter. But like the rest of the retarded townspeople, she chose to believe the lie. Of course...the lie would be more pleasant to swallow than the truth. It always was.

"H-he's alive?"

Adrien and Hunter's mother both turned to stare at the girl. Her voice was raspy yet soft...like the melodic voice that had calmed his rage so many years ago.

"I guess...she hadn't been informed yet of what had actually happened?" He calmly asked, as he tentatively stared at the shaking woman.

The mother grasped the door tightly, as she forced open a wider smile and laughed nervously. "It completely slipped my mind...since it was such an emotional moment...when she woke up."

The air began to thicken between them, as they silently stared at each other like two soldiers waiting for the other to strike first.

Adrien laughed softly. "Of course. It would be too shocking however for a girl who just woke up months after the...funeral...so I feel like it might be better if you explain it to her instead of me. I don't know...if I would be convincing enough. She might think that this is some sort of cruel joke. I'll wait outside."

The mother slowly nodded her head and carefully stepped around him and rushed to her daughter. Her arms wrapped around the girl, as she peered back at him...as if she was waiting for him to kill the two of them.

He smiled faintly, as he closed the door around him.

Hold in your rage Adrien. Her death...should be a beautiful one. Let's not be hasty shall we? There are other things we must do first.

Let...the final round of the game of lies begin.

His hands felt different, less calluses maybe. All she knew was that he was here and these were his hands and they were touching her. The same hands that held her and wiped away her tears for years.

"Oh god, you're here. You're really here." She murmured as he stroked her face. She reached to hug him, just to feel his physical entirety, so she knew he was real and then her mother was back. Hunter slumped back down and barely listened to the words that came out of their mouths.

She heard someone leave. "Thank God, she's gone. Now you can tell me where you've been." Then her mother's arms were around her and she knew she had made a mistake - one of many to come. "Mama, being him back in here. I want to talk to him."

"Oh honey. I know but that's not really him-"

"What do you mean? Of course it is! He just touched me! I felt him, he's real this time."

Her mother sighed. "A lot has happened, Hunter."

"I know that. I want him back so he can explain to me." Hunter would not lose this fight. "Please, Mama. I've just missed him so much." With a final unrelenting sigh, her mother let Louise back in and shut the door behind her as she left them. She stood guard by the door, just in case.

"Louise? Is it really you? You're really here this time? This isn't a dream again?"

Adrien smirked as the mother cautiously waited out side of the room. Just the past week she had been acting so well in front of the Haven's household. If she snapped back to normal...things would get unnecessarily messy. Someone must have called the mother, for she quickly walked away after glancing shortly into the room.

"Louise? Is it really you? You're really here this time? This isn't a dream again?"

She tried to stand and walk towards him, but her legs collapsed under her and she fell onto the hard floor like a new born colt. He yearned to quickly race over and catch her...but that was only something that the other boy would do. The kind little angel that everyone adored. He was the monster that enjoyed watching people scream with misery.

Hunter cried out in pain as she dropped down to the ground, as she tapped the floor with her hands searching for his feet.

He sat down calmly beside her in the dark room, pulling her hair away from her face. Her fingers curled tightly around his hand, making sure that he couldn't escape.

"What would you want to believe?" He murmured, as he slowly wrapped his arms around her trembling body. "What if this was just another pretty dream and the reality was nothing but a nightmare? If you were given a choice to return back to reality or remain asleep in your beautiful dream...which one would you choose?"

She reached for him, just wanting to make sure he was here. Her arms stretched just a little too far and she lost her balance on the edge of the bed. She brushed it off and tried to stand, losing her balance again and hitting the linoleum hard.

The searing agony of falling was causing tears to leak from her eyes. She curled against Louise's body and held tight to his hand.

"I think you already know the answer to that."

Her voice was rough with strain after being silent for so long. But she had missed him so much. Even if it wasn't really him, she would be okay with this. Being able to touch and smell him and know he was there. She would be okay if all she had was the dreams.

"Even if reality was a nightmare, I think I would go back. As long as I had the dreams. As long as you were here some of the time. That would be better than losing you forever."

She leaned against him for support, both emotionally and physically. A question range through her mind again and again. She knew she had to ask.

"Louise? Why? Why did you do it? Why did you leave?"

A smirk stretched across his face, as she willingly fell into the pot of lies like everyone else had.

Of course the lie would be more appeasing than the truth. It always was.

It was his 13th birthday, the 15th time that he had managed to escape from the institution. He hadn't been expecting a sweet special reunion or anything, but he had expected them to acknowledge his existence at least on the day of his birthday...since the other child had been born on the same day.

He stood, soaked in the rain, staring into the large window where a happy group of people surrounded the boy singing Happy Birthday, as the smiling reflection of him blew out the candles. They could have been both warm...happy...loved, but fate played cruel tricks on them and only one of them could be embraced by their mother.

Hours passed, and the happy party soon died out and guests drifted out of the house returned to their own chambers for the night. The other boy ran upstairs to play with his new toys, while the mother and father cleaned up the mess.

Weary smiles were etched into their faces, as they slowly sat down at the table with cups of coffee.

The man murmured something that made the woman jolt and look at him with fear and hatred. An all too familiar expression that he had seen his entire life in that household.

Adrien pressed his ear against the window, blending into the darkness.

"We can't keep on living with this illusion of that he never existed, Gina. We might be living happily now, but karma will soon get to us. This lie..."

The woman shook her head vigorously, almost as if she was trying to shake away the man's words from her ears.

"Jake...you know that we now only have one son. It's always been that way. That other child...was simply a mistake. And you do know what people say. We must leave behind mis-"

"HE WAS OUR CHILD GINA!"

The dropped her coffee cup onto the floor, startles by the sudden outrage of the man.

The conversation ceased, as the other boy ran downstairs crying. The mother quickly ran to her precious son and hugged him, as the father looked on sadly.

"Forget what I said Gina...let's just...live like this."

Adrien's fists clenched, as he smashed it into the window. He ran off into the night with a bleeding hand, as the family fearfully stared at the shattered window.

Even if a lie was temporarily convenient...it would always come back with double times the pain.

He combed his fingers through the girl's hair, as he leaned against the bed beside her.

"There were too many lies and too many people who didn't want to know the truth. So I thought that the easiest way to escape all of this...would be to completely disappear. Maybe then...I wouldn't have to live my entire life thinking of all the lies I told just to protect the life I wanted to live. It was a selfish decision...and when I saw the amount of pain my mom had to go through, I had to force myself to come back. And then...I heard about you."

He looked up at the ceiling sighing. "Why did you do that. You've always been clumsy. Falling, crashing into walls, breaking a limb. What if I actually died...who would have been there to catch you then?" Adrien hugged her tightly, shakily breathing. "I thought...that you had actually died. Seeing you...lying there completely unconscious. Do you know how much that sight tortured me. Even if you wanted to punish me...that was too much."

His fingers ran through her oily hair, she desperately needed to wash it, and she could feel him gently comb through the tangles. They had always been this close. Even when they were little, he would always hold her when she was upset. She tucked her face into the hollow where his neck and shoulder met and breathed in the sweet scent of him as she listened. He had always smelled of soap and vanilla, a strange yet comforting scent.

Her heart broke as she listened to his words. Her fingers laced between his, her thumb stroking it gently.

"You know you never have to lie to me, Louise. I'm here not matter what. I don't care how big of a lie it is, or how scary it may seem, I will always be here."

His arms wrapped around her, squeezing her tightly and she sighed quietly.

"I-I didn't mean to. I was crying and I just wasn't looking. I honestly don't remember much about it, just the pain and the lights. It hurt so much."

She shushed him as he continued.

"Louise, I would never- I thought you were dead. If I would have known...I would never try to punish you, okay? I love you too much for that."
