Azeroth: An Uneasy Peace

So I had the simple idea to have a roleplay set in post-Cataclysm Azeroth. The idea behind it would be a slightly alternate timeline where, instead of continuing to fight, the leaders of the Horde and Alliance realized that The Lich King and Deathwing popping up one after the other was to much for them to handle alone, and so an uneasy truce was formed.

Tensions are still high, and the "enemy faction" is not allowed in each others main cities, but every other small town outside of the largest main cities is neutral. This is to allow players who want to play Horde or Alliance to band together and talk. Because just talking with your own faction, while good in an MMO with thousands of other players on your side, doesn't work in a RP with maybe a dozen people. There needs to be interaction and changing the story a bit is fine if that happens.

The roleplay would be using a D20 system for combat, with all characters starting at level 5 out of 20. My character and my partners would start at level 8, simply because we've put so much damn thought into this. The system itself is here if you'd like to look, there's many different races and classes to choose from; http://www.winnow.veeshanvault.org/files/noncomic/World of Warcraft 2nd Edition.pdf

But please note, this is NOT a Dungeons and Dragons session. The D20 is there for when we decide to adventure and I can run some fighting for everyone, but this is mainly a social cannon to have fun in with leveling and combat on the side. Because of this story driven gameplay you will get 1 level automatically every 2 months, before counting how much you're in the thread and combat itself. Being in the thread a lot could get you a level a month before combat.

And finally you can NOT play an important, vital character. Nobody will be Thrall. Nobody will be King Varian Wrynn. You're simply a character out exploring the world.

Finally, not all the villains are dead like in the World of Warcraft MMO. The main ones of the last expansions, mainly Deathwing/The Lich King/Illidan, are all dead. Onyxia, for example, is not. Gotta leave something for us all to fight.

Any questions or interest in it, just let me know!

I shouldn't start another RP but... I'm a hardcore Warcraft nerd/Lorenerd/player/Rper
So, yes please :D
Sounds good! Be sure to read over the link in the description if you haven't. It uses the D20 system, same as Dungeons and Dragons, so it can be somewhat difficult to learn. I suggest you take a while and get a feel for it. I can answer any and all questions, as I have played D&D and WoW both for many, many years.

Here's a character sheet: http://tagarbearclaw.webs.com/WarCraft/WOWRPG_Character_Sheet_V1.0.pdf

I've been playing WoW since Mid-Wrath and D&D since... about the same time. (That said, I'm still awkward with D&D character set ups and so on xD )

Now to decide which of my 30 in game characters to play... (Two accounts ftw)

Seems like you'll have a good time. You already know what you're talking about so that's great.

The link I sent you has all the core classes and prestige classes, as well as magic and equipment. But you play D&D so you know all this already. The character sheet is a PDF so I suggest using a program to edit it. It can be a real pain sometimes.

So far it's me, you, my best friend and another friend who are all in for this. My friend and I were actually roleplaying in the WoW verse before I decided to make this.

You'd need something like Adobe Acrobat to edit it. You can find that for free online, possibly.

From memory you need the full version :| I might just drop out for now and see how it's going once i get real net... which should be by the end of the month

Well, you don't need to have a character sheet to RP. It is more about social interaction than it is combat. I'd be a rather bad GM if I didn't allow you in just because of internet ^.^

No need for a character sheet at all. Just make up your character and come be social. I can't promise we could do combat though since I'd be using that sheet.

Nothing stopping you from just hanging around and RPing normally though

Oh this character sheet was only for combat related things basically.

My character is typed up in here under my characters

Hey there, I'd like to join up Ari. Not sure if you already read through my character sheet so should I post it here, or..?
I know you so I don't really have a need to read it >.>

Ahh I did see that, I should just do that. Add another to my list of 20...

There we go :D That art was done by a friend
Very good. Accepted.

Nice art too! Your friend take commissions?

I'm interested, but a few questions first.

  • How are you going to handle dice rolls?
  • The WoW RPG is set during Vanilla WoW, and its systems reflect the in-game systems of the time. How are you going to reconcile these systems with post-cataclysm things like Enhancement Shaman being able to dual wield weapons?
  • You're starting us out at level 5, does that mean we'd be unable have characters who are veterans of Outland, Northrend, or Cataclysm content?
  • This is post-Cataclysm with no war taking place in the aftermath, does this mean Pandaria was not re-discovered? (it was only found by either side due to a naval battle; likewise the pandas from the Wandering Isle due to an aerial one.)
  • Are you going to be running this like a typical table-top game, where there's a singular party which travels from place to place together?
  • That's a 402 page handbook, how much of it do you expect us to read, and how much of it are we going to follow? Personally, I'm experienced enough with the universe and game to just wing it once I'm past character creation.

Thanks for taking the time to answer!

Sorry for the long reply; your post was really late for me, and I went out today. I am exhausted but I will do my best to answer.

1) I am not quite understanding. Dice rolls will only be for combat and things such as stealth checks or search rolls to find something. But that won't take up much time. Overall, this is a social canon and combat/dice rolling will not be a priority. The RPG stats is so that we have a consistent way for the characters to grow more powerful, as long as a more fluid combat/rolling system when things do happen.

2) I can't really answer this. There is no "Enhancement Shaman" in the RPG rulebook. There is a Shaman, which is one of the 3 healers. The other 2 being Priest and Druid. There are no skill trees for these classes. There is no Enhancement Shaman, nor is there an Elemental Shaman. It is simply a Shaman. If you want to dual wield; take the Two Weapon Fighting feat. This game is not WoW, it is a whole other beast and many things are different.

3) Your character could be a veteran of war campaigns, but he could not be somebody who, say, helped kill the Deathwing. Unlike the actual video game itself, zones are not level dependant. Northrend may have level 3 creatures wandering around ... Hell, that's likely since a lot of it is zombies and skeletons. But in the same zone there could be level 20 monsters. Just like D&D; you gotta be careful where you wander, because one minute could be a weak Kobold and around the corner could be a dragon.

So just to make sure I answered that well; sure, you could have a character who survived the wars from those eras. Level 5 is actually pretty strong. He'd essentially be special forces at level 5. But he couldn't be somebody who killed the Lich King or Deathwing because he isn't that powerful and would have died. But even at level 5, he is guaranteed to be stronger than 90% of the soldiers in an army, whom went up against Arthas. The average NPC level is only level 5 or so, but NPC levels aren't as strong as player levels. So level 5 players murders level 5 NPC.

4) Honestly I don't care. If people want Pandas, they can have Pandas. If not that's fine. 1 race and that entire island won't really make much of a difference I don't think.

5) Well, right now my best friend and I already have a ship forming between 2 characters who are travelling together. If people want to join with them, that's entirely possible.

6) I do not expect people to read much. All they need to know is what their class is, how it works, and how to properly make a character. And of course; what their chosen skills/feats do. That being said, they do need to know what they're doing with their class and should dedicate some time to understanding the basics of the rules. Otherwise, it's all good. I know most of it anyway.

That being said, many skills will not be used. Appraise, Perform, Jump, Swim, Use Rope, Ride, Profession, Speak Language, Tumble, Climb. Those are what I have so far that I do not believe are needed since it just wastes time rolling. If anybody has any ideas of other skills they think are a waste of time, I will discuss it.

It was late for me as well, so I figured it would be quite some time before you were able to reply, so no worries there. You answered the majority of my questions very well, so I'll do my best to clarify what I meant on #1 and 2.

  • I should have clarified that what I meant by "handling dice rolls" was how will we be rolling dice? Is there a third party method you want us to use, is there dice rolling functionality built into the boards here, or do you want us rolling our own dice at home and being on the honor system? There needs to be some way for our rolls to be verified, and vice versa.
  • I get that this isn't like the PC game, I do play tabletop RPGs, and I was only using the changes to the Enh shammy spec as an example. What I was driving at is that because the RPG's systems were based upon the in-game organization of system, some classes are either going to be restricted in what they are able to do. An example would be that the shaman class in the RPG appear, at first glance, to be designed as squishy healers with some offensive capability thrown in so they're not completely defenseless. If you want combat to hold true to the rules set forth in the RPG, then a dual wielding shaman that fights, essentially, like a bladesinger wizard in 4e D&D is impossible to build.

To me it looks like you're setting yourself up for a game that's very restrictive in terms of what kinds of characters people can make, and that primarily seems to be the fault of using an RPG system that is woefully out of date with the universe you're using. If I might make a suggestion for a more free-form system to use would be Savage Worlds. It's pretty much nothing but skill checks when it comes to combat, and doesn't have a set class structure like this does. The goal of its design being that you can apply the system to any universe setting you wish, and create any character you wish based on whatever in-universe rules you're following.

I am new to this site. I was told that there is a dice program on here, so if that's true, that can be used.

These tabletop games are almost always restricted, as they should be. You can't do everything. If someone wants their Shaman to fight with 2 weapons and kick ass, they're out of luck. Shamans are healers, and cannot do the things a fighter can. If they want a spellcaster/fighter, there are prestige classes and other WoW books they can look at. The Warmage comes to mind, which is a Prestige Class in the very first option here: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B0Xi01JFlDWQNTljNTZiMWYtYWU0Mi00M2JmLWIyOGQtMTJiMDY5NzcxZjM2&usp=drive_web&urp=https://www.google.ca/&pli=1#

And I am not setting myself up for restrictive gameplay; the entire system is based around that. Not every character can do everything. If people don't like it, they can just not play.

That being said, you can easily build anything. There's dozens of prestige classes, like the Warmage I mentioned. It's not "out of date" with the Universe at all. Death Knights are a prestige class, Pandarens are a race in the books, so people can do whatever they want.
