Firebending, one of the four elemental bending arts, is the pyrokinetic ability to control fire. It is unique among the bending arts, as it is the only one in which the performer can spontaneously generate the element. The first human firebenders lived in a city atop a lion turtle during the era of Raava, and the art later spread to the Sun Warriors, the Fire Nation, and the United Republic of Nations.

Fire is the element of power, consisting of overpowering force tempered by the unflinching will to accomplish tasks and desires. However, during theHundred Year War, a militaristic Fire Nation twisted this into firebending being fueled by rage, hatred, and anger. Firebending draws its power from the sun, and the first human firebenders derived their firebending techniques from the dragons.

Firebending is notable for its intense and aggressive attacking style and general lack of adequate defensive moves, although some notable firebenders utilize creative defensive techniques by creating large walls of fire, or shooting down incoming objects with precise attacks.

Airbending, one of the four elemental bending arts, is the aerokinetic ability to control and manipulate air. The peaceful Air Nomads utilized this type of bending in their everyday lives.

Air is the element of freedom. The Air Nomads detached themselves from worldly problems and concerns; finding peace and freedom was the key to solving their difficulties in life. Airbenders continually sought spiritual enlightenment, and, as a result, all children born into the Air Nomads were benders. The first airbenders learned their art from the flying bison.

The key to airbending is flexibility and finding and following the path of least resistance. Airbending is notable for being almost purely defensive, as well as the most dynamic of the four bending arts. Airbenders can overwhelm many opponents at once with large and powerful attacks that could prove fatal; however, due to the pacifist nature of the Air Nomads, such attacks are rarely used. Due to their aforementioned spirituality, they often adapt to the situation surrounding them and employ negative jing, preferring evasive maneuvers as opposed to direct confrontation

Waterbending, one of the four elemental bending arts, is the hydrokinetic ability to control water in all of its various forms. This type of bending is utilized by the people of the Water Tribe, who are divided into the Souther, Northern, and lesser known Foggy Swamps tribes, as well as those of theUnited Republic, each with their own unique bending style.

Water is the element of change. The moon is the source of power in waterbending, and the original waterbenders learned to bend by observing how the moon pushed and pulled the tides. The Water Tribes are the only people who did not learn bending from an animal, though the Moon and Ocean Spirits took the form of koi fish in the mortal world near the beginning of the Avatar World.

The fighting style of waterbending is mostly fluid and graceful, acting in concert with the environment. Foggy Swamp style waterbending, however, is more rigid and straight. Waterbenders deal with the flow of energy; they let their defense become their offense, turning their opponents' own forces against them. Even when waterbenders do take an attack stance, their moves always appear to flow from one to the other.

Earthbending, one of the four elemental bending arts, is the geokinetic ability to manipulate earth and rock in all their various forms. It is utilized by people of the Earth Kingdom and the United Republic.

Earth is the element of substance, making earthbenders and their people diverse, strong, persistent, and enduring. The first earthbenders, Oma and Shu, learned this art from badgermoles.

The key to earthbending is utilizing neutral jing, which involves waiting and listening for the right moment to strike and, when that moment comes, acting decisively. In other words, earthbenders generally endure their enemies' attacks until the right opportunity to counterattack reveals itself.

Fire Nation

The Fire Nation is one of the world's four nations and five sovereign states. It is an absolute monarchy led by the Fire Lord and home to most firebenders. Geographically, the nation is located along the planet's equator in the western hemisphere and is composed of several islands. Its capital is simply known as the Fire Nation Capital.

The Fire Nation is the second-largest nation in terms of area, following the Earth Kingdom, while its economy is the most powerful in the world; its strong industrial sector and extensive technological developments not only enabled the Fire Nation to create an extremely powerful military, but also initiated the worldwide modernization and globalization. Before the foundation of the United Republic and the following global technological revolution, it was also the strongest and most advanced country in the world.

Fire Fountain City

Fire Fountain City is a large industrialized city located on one of the many islands in the eastern Fire Nation. It is named for the large statue of Fire Lord Ozai in its center.

Fire Fountain City fell apart after the removal of Fire Lord Ozai. Citizens remained loyal to Ozai and rebelled against Fire Lord Zuko. After months of war, only a few citizens remain and what used to be a city turned into a meek village. The village is mostly inhabited by refugees and criminals. Although the ambient is heavy in criminal activities, most of the population is made up of young adults and teenagers. It is rumored that, several miles away from the village, the nest of the criminals is located, and if people roam too close to the base, they are never heard from again.

Air Temples

An air temple, or airbender temple, is a large structure that was formerly inhabited by Air Nomads prior to the Air Nomad Genocide, though some also later came to be home to people from other nations. The temples are typically located in isolated and difficult-to-reach environments, such as mountaintops or islands. There are five known temples to date, of which one was completely destroyed in 171 AG.

Southern Air Temple
The Southern Air Temple is located in the Patola Mountain Range and was one of two temples that exclusively housed male Air Nomads before the beginning of the Hundred Year War. It was notable for being the home of Avatar Aang. It features an airball arena and an inner sanctuary that houses numerous statues of past Avatars. The temple also contains a statue of Monk Gyatso and was the last known residence of the winged lemur species. It was restored to its former glory by the Air Acolytes after the end of the Hundred Year War.

latest
Northern Air Temple
The Northern Air Temple was located in the mountains along the northern coast of the Earth Kingdom and was one of the two temples that exclusively housed male Air Nomads. Prior to the Air Nomad Genocide, it also served as the location of the bison polo championship. Years after the devastating blow the Fire Nation had dealt to the Air Nomads, the deserted temple was colonized by a group of Earth Kingdom refugees, led by a renowned inventor, after their town was destroyed in a flood. The mechanist modified the temple to make life easier for the new inhabitants. The temple once held statues and paintings; however, these and other parts of the temple were destroyed by the mechanist to make room for his new technology. The temple returned to its more traditional appearance after it was restored by the Air Acolytes after the end of the Hundred Year War, though it was destroyed in 171 AG when Ghazan used his lavabending to melt the foundations.

Eastern Air Temple
The Eastern Air Temple is located in a mountain range in the southeastern Earth Kingdom and was one of the two temples that exclusively housed female Air Nomads. The site includes many statues of Avatar Yangchen. After the Air Nomads were killed, the temple became the home of Guru Pathik, who taught Avatar Aang how to unlock his chakras and gain mastery of the Avatar State. It is notable for being situated on three separate mountains, connected by bridges and was the place where all young airbenders would choose the flying bison that would become their life companions. According to Tenzin, it is the most spiritual of all air temples.

latest
Western Air Temple
The Western Air Temple is located in the mountains north of the Fire Nation and was one of the two temples that exclusively housed female Air Nomads. Like the Eastern Air Temple, it boasts statues of Yangchen. The temple is notable in that, unlike the other three temples, it is situated underneath the edge of a cliff instead of atop a mountain. The spires seem as though they were built upside-down, and because of that, the temple is hidden from passersby. The site is also decorated with many flying bison paintings that have remained in relatively good condition, unlike those in the Northern Temple. Renowned as the birthplace of past Avatar Yangchen, Avatar Aang and his friends later made it their temporary home in the later stages of the War.
