One Time Luck
Name: Rendus Avalden
Age: 28
Appearance:
Rendus is a tall, relatively dark man, standing at just above six foot three inches with a broad frame built of many hours with blade and shield. He has a bronzed almost mediterranean skin tone inherited from his mothers side with deep brown eyes, flecked with hints of golden hazel.
Rendus’ jawline is quite broad and lends his face a strong determined air that matches the tenacity of the Avalden bloodline well. His unblemished skin is a testament to his skill and caution in battle and training remaining a blank canvas free of scars and the infirmities of most that make their living in combat. In break from the tradition of most male knights of the realm Rendus keeps his hair in a long black mane, cascading down to his shoulders and spilling from the back of his helm.
Rendus wears ornate steel armour given to him as a gift by his father upon completion of his vigil and ascension to the rank of knight. His shoulders are draped in a red cloak as a mark of his standing as Knight Captain of Lamordia. Red also streams from the crest of his helm while the midnight blue crest of the Avalden family is wrought in the thick enamel of his shield, showing the pride Rendus has in his family name.
Rendus fights in the classic knightly discipline of sword and shield combat. The sword at his hip is a one handed Dao, the single curved edge perfect for combat on horseback as well as on the ground in tandem with a large shield. Rendus’ shield is rounded leather coated oak with the Avalden family crest embossed in the middle in fine enamel.
While not in combat Rendus has a taste for fine clothing, wearing doublets of midnight blue with matching trousers and black leather boots. His hand is home to his single piece of jewellery, a ring of black silver he received as a gift from a wealthy merchant whose caravan he had saved.
Location: Currently acting as guard on a trade caravan from Lamordia to Lorana
Personality: As with all of the Avaldens Rendus has a strong sense of duty and honor, he treats his role as Knight Captain with the utmost severity, spending the vast majority of his free time training and sharpening his skills for whatever duty may lie ahead. Rendus is a jovial fellow outside of duty and enjoys wine, song and laughter as much as anyone. He has a certain naivety that can often lead him to trust those he shouldn’t and land him in trouble.
In combat Rendus is a fighter of precision and technique, His style is rigid and learned as if by rote. He is not given to innovation or berserk streaks of terrible rage, ever does Rendus fall back on the techniques learned in training that have proved effective time and again. As with all dutiful knights he will endeavour to save his comrades if needed and take whatever hurt is necessary in the pursuit of victory.
Rendus is not one for boasting and has a hard time warming to braggarts and those who would put themselves above others without first proving their worth. The largest amount of Rendus’ warmth and affection is reserved for family, his cousin Ialia has ever been his closest friend and nearest rival, both pushing each other to be their very best.
History: Rendus’ life was set on the path to knighthood from the moment of his birth, his father was well known as the Knight Captain in Lamordia and his son was greatly anticipated as the next of a proud line of warriors that spread all the way to Lorana. Where other children were given toys Rendus was given wooden swords and books, while other children played Rendus read on heraldry and acts of valour.
Eventually the day came for Rendus to prove himself as the squire a knight under the command of his father, far from receiving soft treatment in return for his last name Rendus was constantly pushed to his limit, training twice as much as other soldiers and constantly keeping the armour of his charge in glistening smith fresh shape.
As Rendus grew his heavy workload shaped him into the strongest, most well disciplined of the squires in Lamordia. When the time came for him to rise to the knighthood that had been his destiny since birth he seized the opportunity with both hands, completing his vigil and receiving his knighthood on the night of his sixteenth birthday.
Rendus was tasked with the mundainity of palace guard for the first few years of his duty to the crown but he endured the boredom with aplomb, finding every opportunity to train and hone his skills for the adventures he knew lay close at hand.
Eventually Rendus got his chance, a guard post on a caravan transporting rare black silver ingots to the capital. Rendus saddled up his horse and rode is his place near the front of the guard, a small collection of inexperienced knights and conscripted footmen lead by a fat old knight close to retiring
into his wine filled winter years.
The caravan was a dull posting until the fat knight caught an arrow through his wheezing neck, bandits began to swarm around the Caravan, arrows knocked and pig iron sabres in their gloved hands. The chain of command broken by a single arrow Rendus took charge of his small collection of green knights and frightened pikemen, Rendus reared his horse and drew his virgin steel. The sight of the young knight resplendent in his gleaming armour, sword drawn high against the sun put faith in the hearts of his fellows as they rallied behind him and mowed into the bandits. Between the crashing weight of the horses and Rendus’ arching steel the bandits were routed and fled back into the forest before a single arrow was loosed.
The rest of the journey was uneventful and as the wagon train reached Lorana the merchant owner rewarded Rendus with a single ring of black silver in gratitude for his valour in saving the cargo and the lives of those inside.
As word of Rendus’ triumph reached his father back in Lamordia the adventures he had dreamed of as a child lay at his feet, Rendus rode across the kingdom making a name for himself and fulfilling his duty to the land and its people. Eventually Rendus was promoted to Knight Captain in place of his father who had vacated it to fill the role of Knight Major.
Currently Rendus is escorting the same black silver caravan that made his name as it winds down to the capital, asked for personally by the merchant who had given him the ring Rendus never passes of an opportunity to visit the capital and drop in on his cousin Ialia.
