About 200 years after the gold rush of 1849 asteroid mining finally began to mature. Of course, such a venture was mostly for the rich at that time. But a little over three decades have passed since then. 99% of asteroid mining is done by large corporations. However, there are a handful of intrepid entrepreneurial men who won’t be denied the next frontier.
I am one of those men. Apparently I wasn’t good enough for NASA, or DARPA, or SpaceX, or any of the other dozen space agencies or colonial pursuits. Oh, I managed to find work as a glorified tech or space janitor. I even made a halfway decent pilot. Of course, routine and boring work is largely being taken over by robots.
I decided to strike out on my own. The idea was insane. The costs were incredible. First, you needed a ship, plus peripheral mining scooters (ATV’s for space), food and air, fuel. Then you would have to compete with the big companies. I had most of that already figured out. I already had a ship. It was junk, but still serviceable. Not much space, but that would come in time.
Similar idea must have come to all of you, for you are all part of a slowly growing private asteroid mining industry. The problems that plague us are: fuel, food, air, maintenance, entertainment. Worst of all is the fact that the corporations will be trying to squeeze us out by controlling the market, ore processing, and even the necessities of life.
The year is 2084.

You may also want to create an NPC or two. Operating in space all by yourself is extremely dangerous.

All of our mining vessels should be tramp freighter class - what the big corporations will sneer at and call space junk.
