Hello all, I am running game on RPOL.net, if any of you like play by post or simply have yet to try play by post I recommend it!

Any way I am firmly against an application for artifact armor for an otherwise exceedingly outstanding character application, the artifact is as follows;

Blackest Midnight Silks of the Victorious Maiden (Artifact 5)

Soulsteel Superheavy Plate

Commitment: 10

When the Relentless Maiden of Unruly Pride and Roaring Fury was Exalted no armor residing in the armories of the First and Forsaken Lion was acceptable for her to wear in combat. Angered by this fact the First and Forsaken Lion brutally tortured scores of his artificers for not having a suit of armor readily available for his newest Exalt. When his anger subsided the First and Forsaken Lion commissioned a suit of armor be specially crafted for the Relentless Maiden of Unruly Pride and Roaring Fury, one that would compliment her abilities and allow her to better command his undead legions. The Deathlords artificers took one full year and on the day down to the very second from which the Deathlord commissioned the armor was it delivered to his hands. Satisfied with the work he bestowed upon his Deathknight his latest treasure, made especially for her and her alone.

Blackest Midnight Silks of the Victorious Maiden is an elaborate and truly ornate wonder among other suits of it's kind. Hardened plates of soulsteel overlap and cascade upon one another and where it's plates do not protect, paper thin layers of black-shaded transparent silk are present. The suit of armor sports three slots for hearthstones; one centered on the chest and one on the back of each forearm. The Blackest Midnight Silks of the Victorious Maiden offer maximum protection without forsaking too much mobility.

Statistics and Powers-

Bashing Soak: +18

Lethal Soak: +18

Aggrivated Soak: +18

Hardness: 6

Mobility Penalty: -1

Fatigue: 1

* The Blackest Midnight Silks of the Victorious Maiden is forged from Soulsteel, adding an additional +2 Bashing and +2 Lethal soak.

* The Blackest Midnight Silks of the Victorious Maiden are for all purposes and intents considering trappings of death for when the Relentless Maiden of Unruly Pride and Roaring Fury must travel in Creation, away from the comforts of the Underworld.

* The Blackest Midnight Silks of the Victorious Maiden is a specially made suit of armor. The armor will refuse to be worn by anyone else other than who it was intended for - even if the Relentless Maiden of Unruly Pride and Roaring Fury willingly gives it to someone else they will find themselves unable to attune to it, much less lift it from the ground.

* The Blackest Midnight Silks of the Victorious Maiden is a power hungry suit of armor. In order for it to bestow any of it's gifts beyond it's massive protection, a hearthstone (of any type) and atleast of level 2 must be inserted into the hearthstone socket in the chest. Once inserted, the hearthstone still grants it's powers, but does not assist the Relentless Maiden of Unruly Pride and Roaring Fury in regaining her essence.

* The Blackest Midnight Silks of the Victorious Maiden grants the one who wears it an increase to there physical attributes. For every 2 points of permanent Essence the Relentless Maiden of Unruly Pride and Roaring Fury has, she gains an additional +1 to Strength, Dexterity and Stamina.

* The Blackest Midnight Silks of the Victorious Maiden grants the one who wears it increased movement. The Relentless Maiden of Unruly Pride and Roaring Fury doubles her dexterity for all purposes of determining her movement.

* The Blackest Midnight Silks of the Victorious Maiden protects the Relentless Maiden of Unruly Pride and Roaring Fury in other ways should she be engaged without her beloved Daiklaive. The Gauntlets of the armor act as if they were Soulsteel Smashfists and the Boots of the armor act as if they were soulsteel God-Kicking Boots with no additional benefits beyond soulsteel construction.

Whoa!

I agree fully with you.

This monster of a suit of armour reaches beyond N/A in power level. Standard Soulsteel Full Heavy Plate is artefact 5, and that's considerably less powerful than this thing. My response to this player (given what's here) would be a direct and unequivocal 'NO!'

I'm inclined to call it a bit too powerful.  However, this IS a level 5 artifact, and it's fair to say that level 5's are exceedingly powerful.  Think about it rationally- a level 5 artifact armor has 15L/15B soak.  Hers is but +3L/+3B above that AND it requires a hearthstone just to work, not to mention the 10 motes of commitment.

The addition of +1 stats for each 2 points of perm. essence isn't especially powerful- yet.  However, I would ask that she simply gain a set amount of points to distribute among her attributes, not a constant gain stemming from her advancement.  The way it is now...it's just a cheap way to avoid increasing her attributes so long as she increases her essence.

The fact that it has a fatigue value of one and a mobility penalty of -1 is also pretty decent, but again, not overly powerful in its own right.  Now, the doubling of the dexterity for the purposes of movement?  Not too powerful on its own, but when grouped with the other powers it's good.

The god-kicking boots plus the Smashfist item is of particular note.  I'd say actually, not a bad idea, nor is it terribly unthemely.  Powerful?  Yes.  However, perhaps make her pay 5 motes to empower them for the scene.  Evens things out nicely.

So, to summarize.  Level 5's are remarkably powerful artifacts.  I mean, crazily ridiculously powerful ones.  Look at the stats for Dragon Armor (level 4's) and you'll see exactly where this chick is coming from as far as stats go.  This is a reasonable artifact.  I'd suggest modifying the essence/attribute gains to a set amount of dots added, and make a mote cost associated with the Smashfisting.  If you're still questioning the artifact, give it a repair value.  Probably a 2 as it is quite complex, but still of greater-than-terrestrial design.

Let's add this up:

Statistics and Powers-
Bashing Soak: +18

Lethal Soak: +18

Aggrivated Soak: +18

Hardness: 6

Mobility Penalty: -1

Fatigue: 1
Decent, but a bit stronger than normal.

These powers don't matter for artifact level.

This is a Lv. 2 Power

A hearthstone placed in an artifact to power it never gives it's abilities, due to all of it's power going into the artifact.  This needs to be altered.

This is a Lv. 5 power on it's own!!  So, with normal armor, this power makes a level 5 artifact.

I'd make this a constant +1, no matter what the user's essence.  That would be a Lv. 3 power.

* The Blackest Midnight Silks of the Victorious Maiden grants the one who wears it increased movement. The Relentless Maiden of Unruly Pride and Roaring Fury doubles her dexterity for all purposes of determining her movement.
It's only a Lv. 2 effect.

I don't know what God-Kicking Boots are.  If they are just Smashfists for the feet, then this would count as two Lv. 1 powers.  If they are actually made to be able to hit incorporeal spirits, that makes it a Lv. 1 power and a Lv. 2.  I'd give them foot-Smashfists and leave it at that.

These ratings are changing from non-artifact armor:

+6 B/ +6 L/ +6 A      This would be Lv. 3 effect.

+1 Mobility Value      This would be Lv. 2 effect.

-1 Fatigue Value        This would be Lv. 2 effect.

So, this is:

2x Level 1 powers, 4x Level 2 powers, and 2x Level 3 powers.

(2x Lv. 1 powers makes a Lv. 2 power, 2x Lv. 2 powers makes a Lv. 3 power, 2x Lv. 3 powers makes a Lv. 4 power, 2x Lv. 4 powers makes a Lv. 5 power).

So that makes 5x Lv. 2's, and 2 Lv. 3's.

Which makes that 1x Lv. 2, and 4 x Lv. 3's.

So, the total is:

(1x2=2) + (4x2=2x3=4) + (2x3=4)

So, it's now 1 Lv. 2 power and (2x4= a Lv. 5 power).

That I'd let slide.

Change the Hearthstone to totally spent on the Artifact, and drop the (+1 Str, Dex, Sta thing) to an even +1 and I'd say it's good to go.

This is designing it from the Savant and Sorcerer book.

I hope this mess helps. 8)

I helped Ker'ion with this so we agree on most but I think the rating sholud be N/A

I play on Rpol.net too, actualy.

Where my Half caste game is.

Im initialy inclined to call this armor "WAY too powerful

but remember that Dragon armor is only artifact 4 and I think is DECIDEDLY more powerful then Articulated Jade armor.

Half-Caste game, how interesting. I will have to check that out. Thanks for the help everyone. I several times now people have refered to Dragon Armor somewhere. THis is in the Outcaste book or so other book that I do not have?

the outcaste book.

My game is under the Anime Section and is named Exalted: Grandchildren of the sun.

I'll warn you that the PC's are QUITE young and that the background/ merit & flaw restrictions are quite severe even I think their a little totaltarian.

Could you give me the section and name of your game?

TBH, in my opinion, I use the SaS rules for everything upto level 5, then if I'm deciding between level 5 and N/A I ask the question "is this artifact creation shattering, story-changing, megauber powerful that any other exalt who sees it is gonna go "how the HELL am I supposed to fight against THAT?!"?".  If the answer is no, this artifact is just going to make the character powerful, then I say it's level 5.  As far as I'm concerned, N/A is reserved for artifacts the characters are not meant to posess, apart from as plot devices; not just powerful personal gear.

I mean, if you want a popular culture reference, the One Ring from (the Film that shall not be named :P ) is N/A because, not only is it a ring of +20 asskickery, but it is also an item which allows the character to alter the fate of nations, purely through the artifacts power alone.

This artifact isn't a plot point in itself (at least it wouldn't be in my game), it's just not THAT powerful.  It'll certainly make the character more powerful, but any big-bag-NPC will say "ooh, nice tinfoil" and spank her all around like they would any other exalt.  However, it's your game.  If this item is, you feel, too powerful for a char in your game to posess, ask the character to tone it down, or put in some downsides to it, and if they complain simply explain to them that in your game, you don't want a lot of powerful gear.  After all you're the ST; if you feel it's gonna comprimise your story, then explain that and see how you can work the item to make it fit in more.

I don't know what God-Kicking Boots are.  If they are just Smashfists for the feet' date=' then this would count as two Lv. 1 powers.[/quote']
Smashfeet?

Nothing productive, just wanted to say that.
