are newly called demons Materialized?

its implied somewhat that a newly summoned demon (or other summonable creature) will be materialized.

do you believe so.

if so is the cost paid for by the creature, or subsumed in the spell cost.

It becomes relevent if the creature breaks free during the spellcasting as to what its essence pool is.

I would assume no, for two reasons:

First, the rules mention nothing about demons automatically materializing, so it's reasonable to assume they stay in their natural (immaterial) state unless they use Materialize.

Second, I like to envision demon summoning in the manner of The Lesser Key of Solomon, et al., where part of the magicians abjurations are to compel the demon to take shape -- because they don't always appear that way automatically.

If you haven't read TLKoS (AKA The Goetia, Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis, etc), you might want to do so. It's primo old-skool medieval style "black magic".

I would, however, say that they're visible when summoned -- at least, until they leave the summoning circle.

And you've gotta remember that if you give them a task, such as "defend me from harm" that they're going to take physical form as part of that, since unmanifested spirits don't tend to do well as guardians.

I remember somewhere not sure where im going to have to look it up that when you summon something it has to materialize, and it pays the cost.  When it leaves it also has to pay the cost to de-materialize.

When it leaves it also has to pay the cost to de-materialize.
There is no cost to de-materialize for naturally immaterial beings.

Shit, I tried that stuff once and didn't get nothin'.  No ruin of my enemies, no fire-beams from my eyes - not a damn.  Maybe I picked the wrong demon.  Should've gone with Abraxis, I guess.
