this is my first time roleplaying in this style/format, so could anyone show me the basics?

also, is it okay to enter an RP forum at any place in the story?

Usually, a Game Master (owner of the roleplay) will first post an Interest Check in Interest Check Forum . The Forum is divided into categories accordingly by their genres. Afterward, potential roleplayers will show their interest in the RP by posting something that shows their interest. The GM (Game Master) then will create a Character Sheet Thread where roleplayers should first create their character. After their character is approved by the GM, the players can afterward enter the RP.

This is the general flow of joining a group RP if you are a player ^^

While there are Roleplays that accept new players in the middle of the story, it's quite rare to see them.

First, if you missed it, that’s my beginner’s guide. It is mostly meant as a guide to the forum itself rather than role playing, but it does have RPN’s life to material regarding role playing itself, as well as some tips I have for beginner’s, made summarized.

Beyond that, I think the best way to help you would be require that you tells what format of role playing you are contrasting RPN’s with (as the differences are the points we should focus on).

As for your final question, you’ll usually want to join RPs through the interest checks like Damafaud Damafaud was saying. If you’re looking through the role play areas themselves, you’re doing it wrong. That said, if there comes to be such a time when you really, really want to join an ongoing role play, it is considered polite to request permission from the GM first.

Hope this helps. Best of luck and happy RPing! :)

You might get lucky and find an RP that is in service and yet still open, but I’d recommend checking out recent interest checks so you make sure you get in on the ground floor. Otherwise you could have to catch up on backstory/older posts.

But like I think was just said, politeness is key. Whether it’s asking a GM if you can squeeze in, or not dominating or godmoddimg the RP. This also goes for “bumping” an RP. Genuinely and gently checking in after several days is one thing—aggressively bumping after 20 minutes is ridiculous, rude, and annoying.

Don’t overstretch yourself into many RP’s at once, ideally. Try to be temperate and stick to what you have, so you can avoid having to ghost or explicitly back out of some RPs.

Cheers
