An expedition led by Charles Wilkes in 1838 through 1842 expanded the horizon for American territories. At the sight of more territory, the United States fantasized to continue their manifest destiny, despite how barren the land may be. After all, look at what we did with Alaska, having bought it in 1862, 20 years later. In 1849, the United States began to set out for colonization, a trail of supplies being sent until April 12, 1861, when the American Civil War began. For 4 years, the antarctic colonies lived on, supplies continuing after the fact. With the newest addition of Alaska, and the growing colonies in Antarctica, several other countries like Great Britain, Argentina, Chile, Norway, and Russia setting out to do the same in an opportunity to cut off the United States’ influence. A series of small conflicts and skirmishes followed until 1899, a treaty being signed in order to let relations cool down. As the times changed, the technology changed as well, steam-powered engines being put to a great amount of use in this colder climate.
