Once the three had signed up, surprisingly, it was Mariana who took the lead. Or perhaps, more accurately, Crimson. Though with her in front of the group, her eyes weren’t visible. The other two would only be able to tell them apart by the difference in body language now.

“A plan would be prudent to ensure this goes as smoothly as possible.” Crimson’s voice would come from Mariana’s mouth. “First thing’s first, we need a plan for civilians. So will anyone volunteer to keep them in check? Or are we gonna have to draw straws?”

Crimson would see anima on the ground with a corresponding signature, matching what the scout had described before. She turned to the left slightly and began to follow it.

“As much as I would love to tear this demon apart, I’ll keep the people at bay if it comes up, as much as I hate the idea.” Crimson muttered, annoyed and frustrated. She really didn’t want to have to leave the fun to the other two. But considering her curse, she could be tracked, and how scared Mariana got last time, playing more of a supportive role seemed like the safest option at the moment.

“If the demon is as intelligent as the report claims, it will surely be aware of the importance of civilians and the advantage they bring.” Marianne chimed in, following behind Crimson. She lowered her hand over her bag, feeling the small spray bottle she had tucked away there. “Fighting it in a crowded area is not only dangerous for all Nulls present, but also risks drawing unwanted attention from them. Still, there is something else I am worried about.”

Her tired eyes scanned the park, observing how the demon threaded through the groups of people. “Notice how it ignores our presence? It benefits from hiding in this mass of Nulls, confident in its safety. If we were to begin evacuations directly, I suspect Deerhead would not stand idly by. In removing them we would possibly force it to use more aggressive means of defense. For now, it is docile, and I suggest we use this moment of peace to get a better understanding of the situation and this demon. Perhaps we could lure it away from the park? Or find a means to naturally draw the Nulls away. Evacuation will only be a last resort.”

Marianne took a moment to adjust Annamarie's “human” disguise. Despite the, by now, common knowledge that the other Montgomery twin was a demon, Marianne took great care to cover Annamarie's red eyes with shades.

“It's talkative and prideful, yes?” Marianne said, taking her twin’s hand and preparing to approach the hulking deer, “Then let's get it talking…”

“Ohh, hmm…” Valerie only nodded along at Crimson’s words, followed by Marianne’s explanation for what the optimal way to deal with Deerhead was, crossing her arms in deep thought. “Wow… You guys call normal people Nulls?”

She was mentally a bit behind in the conversation. Still, it was a point she was stuck on. To think she used to count as one of them until recently, just before she stumbled into Anima Studies.

Clearing her throat, Val eventually caught up with the rest of them. “Right, okay. Have a nice talk with it. Sounds like you’d be pretty compatible with it, so we may as well,” she said to Marianne with a cheeky grin, wide enough to indicate she was just teasing. Unfortunately, the recipient didn’t seem keen on jokes and simply gave her an unamused scowl in return.

“And if it doesn’t work out and he tries to vamoose or get even closer to the people… Well, I can ground it in place, if need be, or at least try to. I’ve… got some new tricks up my sleeve, after all,” she continued with a wink, raising a finger to her lips as if confiding in them all a deep secret.

“Now then… Shall we, girls?”

“Thanks Ms. Obvious.” Crimson rolled her eyes as Marianne laid out what anyone with two brain cells would know. “Well, if it tries hiding among humans, we can simply fight it and devote one of us to the people. So, what if they see something? It won’t matter with this liquid here.”

Crimson shook the spray bottle she’d gotten with a smile. They would just need to have someone play defense while the other two actually fought the demon. It would certainly be a straightforward plan. Maybe one so straightforward it would catch the demon off guard. Though it would be alot of work… But she did see the benefits in talking to it first. It couldn’t hurt, at the very least. Valerie didn’t add much to the conversation, but she was certainly energetic and ready to go. As much as Crimson hated to admit it, the confidence was infectious.

“Nulls, insects, humans, pathetic. It’s all the same to me.” Crimson smiled maliciously as she responded to Valerie’s questioning of the words they used. “I suppose we shall. Marianne can be manipulative and cunning when she speaks, and I’m a demon, so I’ll be indispensable here. Why don’t you keep an eye on the people, and be on the lookout for other demons. I wouldn’t put it past them to be working together.”

It was something Crimson was genuinely a little worried about. She didn’t expect them to, but she also didn’t expect to be cursed during their first exam. Anything was possible. Plus, Crimson didn’t think Valerie would be very helpful when it came to negotiations or talking with a demon. She had a frustratingly easy way with humans, but Crimson felt as if that’s exactly what would make it so difficult for her to say anything helpful to a demon. Though, there was still a genuine worry there may be something more to this all, and Crimson wanted someone’s full focus on their surroundings.

“Aye, aye, Cap’n Crimson!” Valerie exclaimed with a diligent salute. No one needed to say it aloud, but it seemed even Val was aware that she’d probably be of little help in regard to talking to Deerhead. There just wasn’t a better way of putting it, but demons simply seemed to be on another wavelength than humans, a wavelength that Val needed more practice understanding.

All in good time though. She just needed to start small.

With that, she wasted little time getting to work on their plan, hopping off to the side, standing between the blissfully oblivious civilians nearby and Deerhead, all the while looking around to make sure it was indeed the only demon within sight. She tried her best to remain within earshot too, just to make sure the coming conversation would go well, and to be prepared if it didn’t.

“Manipulative?” Marianne hissed indignantly, her sour mood curdling at the accusations. It seemed Crimson’s words had struck a nerve, putting her on the defensive almost immediately.

Between the teasing and not-so-teasing comments made by her ‘teammates’, Marianne was absolutely fuming. Manipulative and prideful? Is that what they thought she was? Idiots. What did they know? Her thoughts began to drift back to yesterday's events, which she kept at bay by digging her fingernails into the flesh of her palms. What did they know?

Her gray, tired eyes glared at the canister Crimson held, “Any arcanist with class would know that relying upon spray canisters is poor form. They were designed to be an alternative to killing witnesses, minimizing the consequences of an arcanist’s mistakes. Still, erasing a null’s memory does not erase the negative anima produced by hysteria and near-death experiences.”

She paused, her frown deepening. “Why am I even saying this? It doesn’t matter. We’re wasting time.”

The typically meticulous Marianne seemed eager to begin, or perhaps eager to be free of this discussion. Regardless, she stepped out from the path and walked across the grass in the direction of the demon. She let go of Annamarie’s hand, opting to walk side by side with her twin instead.

Crimson cringed a little bit as Valerie gave her a nickname. She didn’t understand how Mariana could stand this girl. She was much too much. In many ways. Thankfully, Marianne’s venomous hiss brought her back to what she was used to. Hostility. Not cringiness or overtly sweet niceness.

“Hey, that’s a compliment between demons! You should feel honored that I said that about you.” The demon crossed her arms and looked away from Marianne. As for Marianne’s other words… “A tool is meant to be used! Why would we be given these if we weren't expected to use them? Besides, I’m not an arcanist, so that doesn’t apply to me.”

Crimson said in a smug tone now. But as they approached the demon, she knew it was time to be serious.

“I’m not exactly sure if that in itself should be taken as a compliment…” Marianne muttered, her dimming annoyance belying the gnawing dread in the back of her mind. She didn’t look back at the others, keeping her strides steady and free of exhaustion thanks to her amplification. “It really doesn’t matter if we complete the mission. Let’s focus on that...”

Well within earshot of Deerhead, and making no efforts to mask her presence, Marianne led the approach. She stood in an open space between the gathered families, close enough that they could speak without raised voices, but far enough that there were a few meters between them. A respectful distance.

“Good morning, sir.” Marianne began in a cordial tone, dipping her head as if to greet someone of import, attempting to appeal to its sense of pride. “Perhaps it comes as no surprise, but we have been searching for you. What may surprise you, is that I seek an opportunity to speak. It would seem you have made a name for yourself, and that is perhaps where we shall begin.”

She placed a hand on her chest, “My name is Marianne Montgomery, and the demon beside me is Annamarie. “

Marianne paused for a moment, giving just enough time for Crimson to say her name if she desired, but continuing onward regardless. “Do you call yourself by a name? Our reports have granted you the moniker of Deerhead, for ease of separating you from the others here. If this name displeases you, perhaps we could use another?”

It was at this point, Crimson was almost laughing, just barely managing to keep it in. She was really talking to the demon as if it was some high class arcanist. What was she attempting to accomplish anyways? Getting it to a more isolated area was going to be the only thing they could possibly talk it into doing. She doubted that would happen honestly. Their objective was to eliminate the demon. It’s not like they could just tell it to kill itself. It was gonna be a fight either way. It was simply a question of if they would get an easy fight or a hard one. Civilians were the deciding factor in that.

But Marianne was being far too entertaining at the moment, so she let the girl go on.

Aries | Park's Forest
The scent of demon and arcanist filth alike danced in the air in an unpleasant mix around Aries. Each scent slowly ventured away from him as he continued deeper into the forest, until there was only two. It seemed that Aries would infact have a partner for this one, a shame.

As Aries reached the clearing last the scents were so strong it made him wrinkle his nose in disgust. The clearly was a dangerous calm, only broken by the movement of Nikklaüs. Seeing as the other chose to make himself bait, Aries saw no point in interfering, instead waiting for the other’s actions to bear fruit.

Aries saw the demon's movement just a second after Nikklaüs had recognized it. Aries began to move towards the two now, only halting as he processed Nikklaüs's actions just as the weapon was raised. A small smirk made it onto Aries face as he let out a breath, his heart racing with uncontrollable excitement as the thrill of the kill set in.

Horns tore free as Aries readied himself. Just as the demon landed carelessly onto the ground, indifferent to Nikklaüs's work, Aries dashed in, fist raised to strike the creature while its gazed was focused on the other, hoping to hit the demon hard. Maybe this exam would be a little fun after all.

  • A loud crashing sound echoed through the forest as the tree toppled down. A small dust cloud was kicked up, obscuring their normal vision for only a minute. Nikklaüs's attack appeared ineffective as Curious gracefully landed, avoiding the falling tree with feline agility. The brief moment of respite was broken at Aries's sudden attack. With the demon's attention focused on Nikklaüs, Aries fist was able to connect with Curious's head, a powerful blow, staggering the demon.

The anima of curiosity would swiftly split in half as it partially enveloped Aries, the demon's eyes now moving independently, focusing on separate targets. Carrying the force of Aries's punch, the demon let its body fly back to kick Aries directly at his gut with both legs.

COBALT ULAR
Location: Park

Finished Transparent.pngCobalt was silent as he, Leander and Sophia strolled in the park in search of their target, only giving small nods of greeting at the passersby that came by them.

His shoulders briefly stiffened once he noticed the blue eye, but he soon relaxed as it seemed that Eyes was only observing them from afar via this eye. “At least we know it’s somewhere here...”, he mentioned, as if this was supposed to be reassuring.

Now the problem was locating where exactly Eyes was. And that’s exactly when Sophia came up with a brilliant plan of using Leander’s Anima Art as a means to see the tether between the floating eye and the demon controlling it. “Ah, that’s a very good plan.”, he spoke up, eyes briefly flashing at the prospect of finding their target this way. “Very well, I’ll be ready.”

Cobalt’s gaze was affixed to the eyes floating in the air. Depending on the effect Leander’s Art had, he’d probably need to act quickly -for example, if Eyes decided to attack the moment it was found. He took a singular step in Leo’s direction, assuming he would be the first target due to what he was currently doing.

But while Leo was able to use his Art to detect Eyes, the signal most likely spread to all summoned eyes in the area, making Cobalt purse his lips, arms reflexively raising in defense. “Very nice. But... not as ideal as I’d hoped. Now we need to figure out which one is the correct one -wait, there.” It took a bit of mental effort not to activate his flaming cloak right away. “Did you notice one of the signatures moving? In the tree right there.”, he ushered, gesturing toward said tree with a nod. “Looks like it’s waiting for us to make a wrong move... If I were to attack now, I’m sure it’d be fast enough to dodge. Sophia, do you think you could try and trap it with your Anima Art?”, he quietly said, his eyes still glued to the tree nearest to the trio.

"If it goes on the offensive, I'll try to activate my cloak before it makes contact, so don't stay too close to me. Ideally keep me between you and Eyes." His lips curled into a frown as he remembered the last accident but he immediately shook the memory away -he had much more control than before. This wouldn't happen again.

Sophia was surprised when dozens of fluctuating anima started dotting her vision. She didn't expect the demon to had already planted this much eyes throughout the park. She was confused on how to proceed when Cobalt pointed at one particular moving signature, which had been gradually getting near them.

"Yeah, that's probably it." She nodded at Cobalt. He suggested for her to trap the demon inside her barrier. Sophia took a moment to think things through. She should be able to to conjure a barrier around the demon just like what she did to the wooden box in the asylum. Maintaining it against the demon's attacks from the inside of the barrier though? She's not so sure about that.

"I'm not sure if I can keep it trapped... but I will try." Kneeling on the ground, Sophia glanced around her to make sure they didn't draw too much attention. Then the girl's anima quickly turned into blazing red as she shifted her focus entirely on the demon's signature and leaking her murderous intent. Even before she started the attack, drops of sweat could already be seen forming on her temple.

Extending both of her arms forward, she moved her hands repeatedly as if she was holding an orb in her hands. In the distance, the space around the demon's signature flickered before a glowing red barrier appeared. Hopefully trapping the demon within. She didn't seems satisfied with that though. Continuing her hands movement, she gradually shrink the size of the imaginary orb in her hands, and the barrier followed through as it get smaller and smaller by the seconds.

Be crushed and die!

Leander’s brow furrowed deeply, a flicker of confusion crossing his face. His anima was doing exactly what he wanted, amplifying the eye before them, but something was wrong. There were too many signatures—far more than he had expected. His connection to the eye revealed a web of links, like threads all converging on his mind. It wasn’t like when he enhanced a single arcanist’s anima; this was overwhelming. He could feel the pressure building, the strain becoming harder to bear.

His heart pounded as his gaze swept over his teammates, seeking some form of confirmation. “Did you notice one of the signatures moving? In the tree right there.” Cobalt's voice broke through the haze in Leo’s mind. He glanced over and saw Cobalt nod toward a nearby tree. His body instinctively stepped back, moving closer to the group, trying to hide his discomfort. *°I can’t be defenseless right now... not with this strain,°* he thought, his worry creeping in as his anima pulled against the foreign energies.

Cobalt's observation, though calm, only deepened the unease in Leo’s chest. “Looks like it’s waiting for us to make a wrong move... If I were to attack now, I’m sure it’d be fast enough to dodge. Sophia, do you think you could try and trap it with your Anima Art?”

Sophia responded almost immediately, her voice tinged with a slight hesitation. "I'm not sure if I can keep it trapped... but I will try."

The moment Sophia’s barrier appeared, Leo let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding. He released his hold on his anima and dropped his hands to his knees, hands bracing him as he took several deep breaths. His whole body trembled slightly, the strain of amplifying something so foreign taking its toll. *°Why was that so intense?°* He wondered. But something else caught his eye. The barrier Sophia had conjured... it wasn’t the same. The usual translucent yellow glow was replaced by a glowing red.

His refined vision kicked in, and the moment it did, a wave of confusion and worry washed over him. Sophia’s barrier wasn’t just different—it was menacing, filled with an intensity that sent shivers down his spine. He stumbled back again, barely catching himself as the weight of her bloodlust hit him like a physical force.

"H-Hey, Sophia..." His voice wavered slightly as he forced himself to stand. His legs felt weak, but he couldn’t let this go unnoticed. Your... Anima is a little menacing... It doesn’t feel like last time I saw you... Is everything okay? He stared at her, trying to read the expression on her face, and it didn’t take long to see the struggle behind her eyes. She was fighting to keep the barrier up, but something was clearly off.

Leo’s mind raced, his thoughts tangling in confusion. If Sophia was this off-balance, could amplifying her make things worse? He’d trusted his ability to help his teammates just recently, but this situation made him hesitate. His eyes flicked to Cobalt, who was more focused, more stable right now. *°Maybe I should amplify him instead. His offense might be the key to taking care of Eyes before Sophia struggles too much...°*

But the doubt lingered in his chest. He didn’t want to make the wrong call, and right now, he felt as useless as ever. Just moments ago, he had helped locate the demon, but now he stood frozen, unsure of how to act. His hands clenched into fists as he mentally berated himself. *°Come on, Leo... don’t freeze now.°* It was easily possible to amplify both, though the added bonus to them might not be as important as he'd hope. He then wiped away all thought. If anything, helping strengthen them both would make this get done quicker. His anima coiled out of him again, the same quickness as it had done to connect with the eye, it attached to Cobalt and Sophia. "°Lets hope this is okay...°"

“Whoa, boy. Stop right there now,” Valerie said to the demon as it steadily began to draw closer to the families, standing between it and the general vicinity of the people as she held out a hand against it. “Their purpose isn’t to look at you. They’re just trying to hang out and relax, buddy!”

In deep contrast to Marianne’s formal, reverent manner of speaking, it seemed that Valerie had no such scruple, continuing to speak in an overly casual and familiar tone as she did with any other person, albeit with gestures and nicknames like she was talking to a dog. Whether it was because she genuinely had no reverence for giving such a creature its due respect or because she observed Marianne’s manner of speaking to be ineffective and tried going her own way, who could say?

Even so, despite its words that were a bit obtuse to parse, Valerie notably paused a bit at the demon’s first stanza. Sight to be cleansed of lies, and love to be granted. If it exposed itself to the so-called Nulls, would that lead to the floodgates opening and suddenly allowing them to see every other demon around? Between that statement of cleansing sight and later promising to clear their minds, that didn’t sound good at all. Whatever all that entailed, she couldn’t let that outcome happen.

“I don’t think anyone’s willing to pay your fee. It’s a bit too expensive, so maybe you can just render your services null and be on your way somewhere else?” Valerie continued warily, hoping for the best but preparing for the worst.

“Alright, I’m gonna stop you right there.” Crimson said, raising a hand towards the deer, as if that would do anything. “If it’s really an audience you want, we can grant you a bigger one elsewhere.”

The demon told the deer demon. She didn’t try lying or anything either. It was true. If they could just bring it to where Jaquie, and the other students had been, there could be a bigger audience there. Well, once everyone came back. But the deer didn’t need to know that they weren’t there right now. Even though she tried to suppress it, she was feeling excited for the upcoming fight. Though notably less so than the last time she’d fought a demon. A shame, really.

“Or we’re gonna have to do something you don’t want us to.” Tendrils began to emerge from Mariana, though the people around remained unaware. “Come on ‘four legs.’ The humans gave me something I wanted. We can do the same for you.”

Crimson added, crossing her arms. The statement was partially true. The arcanists had at least ensured she had a place she could always feel safe in. Something she didn’t have as a demon on her own before.

Marianne was becoming increasingly agitated, something that was evident in how she let her peers do most of the talking. Here was a demon who could reason and speak, considering its low rank, and yet it was going to be slaughtered like the rest. Did it not realize it? Did it not care?

She did not understand why she felt so angry, placing it somewhere between an accumulation of her lack of sleep and a residual of everything that came before. Her head was throbbing, a sharp pain digging from behind her eyes. Anima kept her body steady, but her mind ached.

“They don’t know you exist, and they will forget you if they do.” she said slowly, holding a hand to her head and gritting her teeth. There was a sick irony in that statement, “That is the way of things. You are seen, you are eliminated. But there is another way, one that only someone as magnanimous as you can see. One where you live and are surrounded by humans who can see and admire you. No arcanist could touch you.”

What was she even saying? She was putting others in danger. Did she not realize it? Did she not care? Were they right?

“Let us prove who is more worthy of their love. A measure of strength. If you win then you’re free to wander as you please, but should we be victorious then I show you this other way.” Said Marianne, eyes wide as she stared at the demon. “But not here. A place where you can display your true strength and we ours. The forests? I’ll allow you to choose.”

Crimson gave Marianne a side eye as she kept on talking. A contest of strength was a good idea. Though she wondered if this demon was the kind to entertain challenges like this. Her gaze moved back to the demon.

There was a satisfaction Nikklaüs held in the way the tree collapsed. He was leagues above where he used to be, he just needed the time to experiment out in the field. Killing this demon would be exactly what he needed to get out of this funk, surely. That's why when Aries showed up to crash the party, Klaüs' jaw tightened near to the point of shattering under its own force. Who the fuck does this kid think he is? Honestly, who does Klaüs think he is? Couldn't remember hardly a damn thing about him, a miracle he could even remember the name. Not important. Klaüs gave chase, running down the length of the tree as it came down. Unfortunately Aries reached Curious before he could, and was effortlessly blown back for his efforts. A nasty kick that sent him flying down to Klaüs. Clicking his tongue in frustration, he brought his guard up to catch Aries on the flat of his blade before swatting him aside by flicking his blade down into a lower guard.

"If that's the most you can contribute, then stay out of my fuckin' way." Klaüs chastised him before closing the distance on Curious, thinking not about how graceful or rough Aries' landing was as a result.

By sending Aries to intercept Klaüs' advance, it had created a delay just long enough to reset its stance. Whether or not it was intelligent enough to do that with intent was up for debate. Regardless the answer, he would need to plan his next move carefully as to not be immediately shit on the same way Aries had. That first interaction told him a lot though, as it had eaten Aries' punch pretty convincingly before retaliating, not making an effort to intercept or defend prior to the hit. Still, can't take any chances. Upon closing the distance, he sunk Zantetsuken into the tree's trunk before taking it by the handle and swinging his running momentum around it like an axis. Like this, he could send a strong kick straight into the demon's jaw while using that revolving momentum to reset himself behind Zantetsuken and give himself a chance to defend, bolstered by how much bite into the tree it had.

Aries | Park's Forest
The feeling of the punch hitting the demon sent a shiver of satisfaction through Aries. The sense of satisfaction was interrupted by the explosion of pain in his stomach as the kick landed. It pushed Aries back as he quickly dug his feet into the ground to stop the increasing distance. It was then that he felt a cold blade on his back as he was shoved by another force.

Aries's bloodlust spiked as anger coursed through him, his lethal gaze falling onto the culprit, Nikklaüs. Aries barred his teeth at the other's ego, sharpened teeth glittering, "Perhaps next time, try hitting the demon instead of a tree if you are so focused on results," Aries hissed back before dashing back in again. Aries moved to the other side of the demons, his eyes meeting its even at this angle.

Aries paid little attention to Nikklaüs's attack other than its placement and chose to aim a punch at the demon's knees, hoping to send it to its knees if it were to land. The desire to maim and destroy coursed through Aries as his heart raced with excitement. The thrill of the hunt brought Aries back to a state of mind that was familiar to him, his prey right in front of him. It would almost be enjoyable if there were not the nagging and annoying voice of Nikklaüs.

  • Curious returned to a relatively calm stance, both eyes following both of the students, the anima of curiosity still surrounding them. It would be both students who closed the distance. With Nikklaüs sticking his blade on the trunk of the tree and with his momentum attempting a powerful kick, whilst Aries aimed another punch, this time for the demon's knees. Both attacks would only hit wind, as Curious quickly stepped, avoiding both attacks, like prey Curious was being extremely cautious. Yet unlike prey, Curious did not run, its eyes remained glued to the students; it almost seemed interested in their movements, observing them rather than going for any form of counter-attack.

Marianne was beginning to lose hope when she saw the efforts of her allies go to waste. Not that she was surprised the creature would take offence, of course. The lack of tact was more horrific than the demon itself. Yet even so, her own words seemed to fall onto deaf ears. That is, until the challenge. Then it all clicked.

That's it, feed your pride.

Her brief satisfaction was snuffed out when the creature revealed itself. Quickly, her eyes flicked to every null present, ignoring their terror as she made a speedy headcount. How many were there? Where could they be brought to safety? How could she spare them before harm was done?

Yet all of these questions were answered when the arboreal arena bloomed from the earth, curling upwards into a cage of greenery. Marianne found herself staring at it, yet there was no longer dread in her tired eyes. They sparked with relief, a feeling that rippled over her, and for a moment Marianne laughed. Marianne Montgomery laughed, short and amused.

There were no nulls between them, nobody to run around like frightened animals without direction or plan. The world had been reduced to nothing but them and the demon, locked in the only language they knew. As it happened, she was fluent as well. It made everything sharpen, nagging past and uncertain future burning away until there was nothing but the moment. Life or death.

It was perfect.

Annamarie was beside her in an instant, scissor blades at the ready. She held one side while Marianne held the other, poised as if to begin a ballet performance. Their movements were so in sync that they practically looked like mirror images of each other, demon and arcanist. Black and white.

The demon charged at them, and together they bowed, a formal introduction to a waltz.

"Then let's dance..." declared Marianne amid the thundering of hooves.

The twins waited where they stood until the last possible moment. When the antlers descended, they split apart onto either side of the creature, each pushing the other away from the scissor's handle.

Marianne was the one who held it after the split. She swung it back at the creature, feinting a sideways arc for it's head. Yet instead of striking, she sent the scissors flying past its neck. It was caught by Annamarie who waited in the opposite flank.

The doll caught the blade by the handle, and using the momentum, swung open the blades. She brought them down upon one of the beast's horns, attempting to snip it like garden shears to an overgrown weed.

“I mean,” Crimson punched her open palm and twisted it as the demon replied to her. “if you say so, I’ll send you on your way along the river Styx.”

She was still itching for a fight, and thankfully for Crimson, but likely not for the others, it seemed that’s what they’d get. The trees around them trapped them in an arena of sorts. But also the people who were now seeing the demon. Ugh, great. Well, she didn’t need these people dying, or worse. Being used as hostages by the demon. So she took it upon herself to remove the fragile people from the equation. Hopefully then, she could go all out.

Suddenly, in the ring the people were trapped in, a swirling vortex of water appeared, causing people to scream and back away from it. Crimson twisted the cap off of the bottle and went to throw it through the trees. But her hand didn’t let go…

“What are you doing?”

“It’s too dangerous! We don’t know how much that will affect people!”

“You baby. Do you have any other ideas?”

“Just do it manually!”

“Are you serious?”

“I won’t let you do it that way.”

“Ugh, fine!”

As the deer started its attack, the others could hear Crimson and Mariana having a back and forth with one another. Crimson screwed the top back on the bottle and threw it between the trees where a tentacle emerged to catch it.

“Alright, if you want out, jump in the vortex and you’ll be fine!”

No response from the people who were either still too in shock or did not want to jump into a swirling vortex of black water.

“Yeah, that’s not gonna work…”

Crimson sighed.

“Are you ready?”

“For what...”

Crimson lowered her voice. “Mariana, if you want these people safe, we have to do this.”

“Oh... that...”

“I need to hear you say it.”

“I’m ready.”

“I’ll try to make it fast, okay?”

Welp, it was gonna hurt, but she’d have to do it. Tentacles burst from the ground where the civilians were at and began to drag them into the vortex of water. Wrapping around ankles and waists, it dragged people kicking and screaming into the depths, but not before spraying each and every one before they went under. It was definitely taxing of Crimson, as she used most of her focus to do this, and did nothing to help the others or attack the demon at the moment. She could feel that pain from the curse. It was an intense, fiery pain. Like that of boiling water, and an aching that touched her whole being. She clenched her fists so hard, blood started to drip down them. She kept an eye on the demon, just to make sure it wasn’t going to attempt to attack her. If it did, then she would make a move to avoid it. But for now, she wanted the people out.

Crimson’s pain barely allowed her to feel the satisfaction and joy from the horrified screams and terror in people’s eyes as they thought they were going to die. What idiots. If only they knew she was saving them. It was so funny how scared and desperate these people were to avoid the black tendrils that hunted them down, and dragged them into the depths of that swirling vortex. At least with this pain, she could channel that into her anger, and take it out on this thing once the last human was gone. But the pain she felt… She’d only ever felt it once before, when she was defeated, captured and tortured by another demon years and years ago. But that feeling had dulled with time… Maybe it wasn’t worse, but it felt that way. Boiling water being poured across her entire body. The blood under her skin boiling, and her bones being akin to a meteor upon reentry. Everything burned to an ungodly extent.

THIS FUCKING CURSE, I’M GOING TO KILL THAT DAMNED DEMON

Thankfully, demons couldn’t pass out due to pain… Or, well, Crimson almost wish she could right now. It was agonizing. She had been a masochist to some extent, and enjoyed it. But she enjoyed it in the context of a fight. This was just her doing Mariana a favor and saving the puny, helpless things. It was a herculean effort on her part, sapping 99% of her mental strength. It took the rest of Crimson’s strength to keep her mouth shut because of Mariana…

Poor Mariana. She felt all the same pain Crimson was. But she was just a normal girl. No combat experience. No experience with pain. She wasn’t used to it, nor did she have any kind of tolerance. It’s like she was set on fire. It was the price to pay so that these people could escape. Seeing their terrified faces and horrified screams only made her feel worse. She wanted to tell them, scream out to them that she was doing this to help them. That they would be okay and everything would be fine. But that wasn’t the only reason she wanted to scream. Crimson was able to keep her mouth shut, but Mariana was letting out the loudest, most bloodcurdling scream in her mind. The only one who could hear it was Crimson. The demon found that, for once, such a scream didn’t bring her joy. But anger, and vengeance. She wanted to pin this pain Mariana was experiencing on the one inflicting it in the first place…

Mariana was desperate to hold on. To show her worth compared to everyone else. That she could be an arcanist. Desperation and determination clashed in her mind. One filled with a pained scream to a level her classmates probably hadn’t heard before. Her vision turned white, before slowly darkening. Mariana’s body trembled

“C-Crimson…”

Mariana pleaded. Her voice was small, so full of pain, and so scared. Usually a welcome tone of voice, it only further enraged Crimson, and made her feel an emotion she hadn’t felt for years. Fear.

The breaker wasn’t flipped, but the electricity slowly dwindled, into nothingness. The lights were out, and Crimson gained control as Mariana's mind gave into the pain.

The others would see Mariana fall to her knees as the last person was swallowed up by the vortex. At which point it closed and dissipated, leaving only a muddy puddle behind. The tendrils also immediately vanished, and relief washed over Crimson, who panted heavily. The pain was gone, but that lingering ache remained and pulled at her nerves. It had only taken roughly 20 seconds, but it had felt like an eternity... The feeling was still seared into her mind. She pulled herself to her feet with a hand on the tree beside her to steady herself. Both of her eyes were red, and she looked at the demon with a fire in her eyes. Pure rage and hatred. An aura radiated from Crimson that the others had never before witnessed. Rage and hatred to an extent that any arcanists present had likely never experienced before.

“How dare you?”

Crimson screamed at the demon. Her shoulders trembled with anger, her hands dripped with her own blood, and her aura of rage was overpowering, overwhelming anyone too close to her.

How dare he inflict such pain on me? How dare anyone try to limit me with some stupid curse? How dare he do such a thing to Mariana?

Crimson was going to do everything in her power to make sure of one thing.

"Oh," Valerie breathed defeatedly as it seemed that their diplomatic approach didn't work. And here she thought, in a subversion of expectations, her more casual manner of speaking would get its attention more than Marianne's way. "Look, man. I really don't want to--" She began, but she no longer had any choice. The die was cast already, and the fight had already begun, as trees sprouted all around everyone, trapping them in a wooden dome.

Well, that wasn't good.

Val's head whipped back and forth between the obscured crowds and Deerhead, initially at a crossroads at what to do. She was dully aware that she was probably the least well equipped to handle such a dangerous demon up close, between the nature of her initial anima and her general lack of know-what about the nature of demons compared to someone born and naturally educated into this society. However, once she saw Crimson take the initiative to take care of the civilians by herself, Valerie bit her lip, deciding to put her faith and trust in her on that front. And in the meantime...

Her hands began to glow with supernatural energy, but not the same kind of glow as usual. Before, whenever she'd make use of her fireworks, they'd glow and materialize in all sorts of colors like that of a rainbow, but here, her hands glowed golden, as it became apparent that it was time to unveil that new trick of hers that she'd mentioned earlier.

Wish I'd had more time to fiddle around with this, but I guess needs must!

Thrusting her arm forward, it was as though some sort of rope or thick string of pure light shot straight out of her palm with the ferocity of a lunging snake, bright golden in color. As Deerhead charged with furious intent to kill Marianne, who moved to mount her own counterattack, Valerie's magic lasso tightly coiled around its body, intending to hold it in place to help Marianne go to town and put the hurt on it.

Through tightly gritted teeth, Val at the same time attempted to channel her Amplification, knowing that she'd need some extra strength to keep it in place. As a pink aura radiated from her body, Val tried her best to keep her balance, almost coming close to slipping from the tension gathering around her feet as they struggled to stand in place. "Oh, chúa ơi...!" She groaned out, slipping back into an old tic she thought she'd long kicked after moving out to college from the very man who gave her that tic in the first place, her dear old dad. But of course, it seemed that it tended to come back in moments of great stress.

"Chúa, chúa, chúa, chúa...!" She could only grunt through her teeth as she tried to wrap her own rope around her wrist for more traction.

Continuing to struggle against Deerhead's inevitable resistance, feeling herself slip like she was the one slowly being pulled forward, Valerie desperately looked back at Crimson as she noted her righteous fury shaking the air, and then moving her head again to look at the Montgomery twins to see if they had any other tricks up their sleeve of their own, for Val wasn't sure how much longer she could try to hold Deerhead in place.

When Klaüs' went a full revolution around Zantetsuken without making contact with Curious, his eyes darted around in an attempt to find where the bastard went.

"How did you miss!? He couldn't even see you!" He shouted at Aries.

Planting his feet firmly into the bark, Klaüs put his full heft into pulling Zantetsuken from the side of the tree. Assisted by amplification, when the blade came free the tree cracked under the crushing force of Klaüs unintentionally launching himself directly at Curious at an impressive speed. That, that was stronger than before. What changed? Still, before he could spend any time trying to decipher that, he had to figure out what he was going to do once he actually closed the distance. Shit! He was airborne, the one condition he wanted to avoid since he lost a lot of defensive options without the leverage of the ground. That just meant he would need to get aggressive. Throwing his arm in a circle overhead to build momentum with Zantetsuken, he swung it wide on the inside in a way that caused him to corkscrew into a formidable overhead swing. It was a bit more committal than he would've preferred, but doubtful that it could block such an overtly powerful strike Klaüs was confident he would be able to answer any kind of follow-up out of a sidestep.

Open wide, motherfucker!

Cobalt was attentive and at the ready as Sophia used her Anima Art to conjure a barrier around the demon, going for the kill immediately. His brow furrowed at how different her anima was but he chose to focus on the fight instead. Such questions could wait until everyone was safe.

Even though it looked like Eyes would be killed by being crushed by Sophia, Cobalt wasn’t so sure it’d be that easy. But with it completely encased in the shrinking globe, all he could do was take a stance and get ready. He felt a familiar tingle go through his body as Leander used his own Art to attach a tether to himself and Sophia. Cobalt muttered a ‘thank you’ but kept his eyes focused on the enemy.

Even when he heard Eyes ‘die’ inside the barrier, he didn’t lower his stance. “... Careful, there’s no way it was this eas-” He didn’t get to finish his thought as he saw a white blur in the corner of his eye. Leo jumped back, momentarily frightened. Acting on instinct, Cobalt turned around to shoot out a fireball from his palm, which ended up hitting the ground where the demon previously stood. “Tsk, it’s fast.”, he said in annoyance. His lips pursed as he observed the eyes floating in the sky for a moment. “... Maybe it did that to escape...?”

His thoughts were interrupted as he turned to Sophia, his features softening. “Sophia, are you oka- err, no, you don’t look like it...” His face shifted into a grimace as he saw the gash go down his teammate’s shoulder.

“I-I’m okay.” Sophia replied weakly and winced at the sight of the new injury on her shoulder. The wound did hurt but she didn’t seem to mind it too much and instead stared towards the direction the demon went.

“It didn’t actually break my barrier.” She said as she leaned against the nearest tree, next to the first eye they found. “It still has some tricks.”

“I can’t make a large barrier without both of my hands so be careful.”

There's surely some way to support your other arm then-Leo quickly approached and crouched beside Sophia, close enough to be within reach if she needed help, but keeping a bit of distance out of respect. His gaze flickered between her wound and the area where the demon had vanished. He bit his lip, a bit of frustration gnawing at him—amplifying them was useful, but he couldn’t stop the bleeding or make her pain go away.

...I can shift more into Cobalt," Leo murmured under his breath, half-thinking aloud. "If... if you need to stay back. His voice was soft, avoiding the weight of telling her what to do.

He risked a glance at Sophia's arm, and his brow furrowed. Too much movement and that shoulder’s going to get worse...

Leo slid off his outer jacket and placed it between them on the ground—just close enough for her to grab if she needed to support her arm.Use this—until we can patch you up. He didn’t look at her as he spoke, keeping his eyes out for Eyes on the open.

“Thank you, this should still be manageable.” Sophia received Leander’s jacket and tied it around her shoulder as a temporary sling. Part of the jacket quickly turns red as it absorbs her blood.

“I will wash it thoroughly before returning.”
Sophia winced at the bloody sight.

When she winced, Leo’s lips pressed into a thin line, a quiet acknowledgment of her discomfort. No need to rush it back... Just make sure you’re okay.

Trusting Leo to help out Sophia, Cobalt kept a close eye on the sky. But he didn’t want to wait for the demon to attack again. With its speed, it could potentially strike him before he could even get his flaming cloak on.

“... I think it switched places.”, he spoke up, a flame appearing in his hands. He was briefly distracted by the tingling sensation he felt in his hands -most likely Leander’s Anima Art increasing his power, though he immediately focused again. “If it didn’t destroy the barrier, that’s the only explanation. We heard something get crushed, yet Eyes attacked us from the sky almost immediately after. And in the air are...” He pursed his lips, almost wishing he wasn’t right as there were a lot of eyes floating around, taunting the newbie arcanists with their gaze. He most likely could destroy them from a distance but it wouldn’t be instant.

“That makes sense, but that means we must destroy every single floating eye before going for the main body.” Sophia said as she watched the numerous eyes within the park. “Are you ready for that, Cobalt?”

“I’ll have to...”

Leo glanced at Cobalt, weighing his words carefully. He wasn’t the type to rally the team with grand speeches, but he could still offer what little reassurance he had.
You’ve got this, Cobalt. His smile was small but genuine as he stood back up. I'll stay on watch for any movement... If we cover each other’s blind spots—back to back—we’ll be ready. His fingers twitched, adjusting the flow of anima to keep both Cobalt and Sophia steady, though keeping the focus of it on Cobalt. You destroy the eyes. I’ll make sure nothing sneaks through.

“I want to help with the eyes, but I think I will focus on defense. I’m sure the demon would retaliate once it knows what we’re aiming for.” Sophia formed a semi-transparent orange shield on her right arm, ready to hold off the incoming attack.

“Let’s try to get rid of as many as possible before it attacks, then.” Amplified flames engulfed his hands as Cobalt went on the offensive, striking forward with his palms and firing off globs of fire at the floating eyes.

A second later, however, he remembered the training he did with Nikklaüs and switched strategies. ‘Control the entire area, not one target at a time...’, he thought to himself. Instead of striking forward to hit the eyes one at a time, he adopted a wider stance and started tracing arcs with his arms, sending waves of soul flames at his many targets. While the fire was less concentrated when attacking this way, it would allow him to hit many eyes at once, and he was confident that his damage would still be enough to get rid of them quickly,
especially with Leander empowering him.

Aries | Park's Forest
Unfortunately for Aries his punch hit nothing but air, the momentum sending his fist into the dirt. Another unfortunate for Aries was the annoying voice of Nikklaüs that never seemed to shut up. Aries let out a growl of annoyance, shaking the dirt and grass off his hand in a sharp movement.

"If you arcanists spent half the time you do on talking on battles and used your fucking eyes, maybe you would understand something, filth." Aries could feel his bloodlust building with each word as his anger shifted to Nikklaüs for just a moment. Curious didn't seem like it was moving, maybe he could tear into the annoyance first, saving the whole world from bleeding ears.

luckily for all involved, Nikklaüs's movement towards the demon shifted Aries rage back onto the correct target. Unlike Nikklaüs, Aries had picked up on Curious's split focus. It was going to be difficult for just the two of them to catch it off guard. Aries just had to be stronger, to be faster than it could react.

Aries barred his sharp teeth, the foul anima flowed through him, wrapping around his muscles in a familiar pattern, a method unbeknownst to him, was called amplification. His blood pumped through him in a rhythm atune to the crowds cheers. Once again two beasts were pinned against eachother by filthy arcanists, an endless cycle Aries found himself doomed to repeat. If he had to work with the arcanist filth, the least it could do was be useful and play bait. Thankfully, Nikklaüs, just like Aries was drawn to the scent of blood like a starved animal.

using Nikklaüs's moving body as a shield from the creature’s gaze, waiting for Nikklaüs's attack to land or miss. Either way, Aries followed behind, just as the demon dodged or recovered from the hit, Aries came from his cover of Nikklaüs. His fist was primed and ready, aiming at the demon mid motion at full force.

  • Once more, the students continued their relentless assault against Curious. Nikklaüs was first to act with his reckless attack, which threatened to deliver a powerful strike towards the demon. Yet as the blade made its way towards Curious, the demon followed the student's movements and took another step back, dodging the attack and avoiding any unnecessary retaliation. Only this time, from the sights of the demon, Aries has momentarily disappeared, his body and signature obscured by Nikklaüs, almost acting as a smokescreen.

Then just as Curious would begin to recover from its dodge, Aries burst out of the fog, throwing a punch Curious could not dodge as its eye readjusted back onto the student. At the last moment, Curious was able to raise one of its arms in a desperate attempt to defend itself.

The strike crashed upon Curious's arm, shattering it and almost ripping it from its body, as the demon itself was pushed back from the impact. Curious would step back further to create more distance, its eyes locked onto the students, not a trace of fear nor worry could be seen on those eyes, for that was the nature of demons. Instead, a new shape would begin to emerge from the demon anima. Inspiration.

Curious would rip off its dangling arm as it used its anima to regrow a new limb. The old arm would begin to contort, thinning out and extending into a shape eerily similar to Zantetsuken. It's posture too became more savagely as its anima signature dulled, blending into the ambient anima and dashing away from the students into denser forest.

The backstep, fuck. That was the only option he wasn't hoping to see. Only made more frustrating by Aries following up on him without warning and stifling his pursuit. What is with these fucking demons and shrugging off limb loss? Nikklaüs growled internally with an anger that only continued to rise when he saw Zantetsuken's form manifest in the demon's hand. Is that how you want to play it? Even god knows I could never be defeated in a cross between blades! A thought cut short by Curious dashing off away from them.

"What? You can't talk and fight at the same time? You must not be very good at this. Probably why you let him get away." Klaüs plunged Zantetsuken hilt-deep into his chest to free up his hands for traversal, before launching himself up into the tree-line.

He only continued to egg on Aries not just because he thought the dickhead was annoying, but because he felt the change. The way his Anima flared up and grew stronger as he poked and prodded at him. Maybe that was the point of connection between them, that core emotion that drove them. Something like your perfect self-image, your determination, your calmness; those are fragile things that can waiver or even break in the heat of a fight, but Wrath? Bloodlust? There's only ever room for more. Klaüs just needed to keep pissing him off.

"I mean, let's talk numbers," As Klaüs jumped from tree to tree, he spared a small bit of his air time between each leap to spinning around enough to continue talking shit to Aries; who was almost certainly either chasing the demon down with him, or chasing Klaüs himself. Who could say? "You got hit once, and I got hit—hmm—nonce! That puts me ahead, doesn't it?"

As for Curious, it did a pretty convincing job of erasing its Anima from their senses, but it wasn't fast enough to break line-of-sight. They would be upon it soon.

“Awww, is someone sad they aren’t the center of attention?” Crimson yelled back at the demon after it spoke.

That stupid curse… She hated how much pain it caused her when using too much anima. How the pain dulled her. Or, how it would have. But she was filled with so much rage and hatred, it energized her almost, and was the only reason she wasn’t injured by the roots shooting out at her from the ground. But she wasn’t left unscathed. They almost caught her, but Crimson managed to summon tentacles below her that propelled her up into the air with such force, she flew over the deer. Clothes were ripped, and scrapes were left where she’d been nicked and swiped by the roots.

A small pool appeared under the deer where an anchor emerged. Tendrils shot from Crimson and connected to the massive hunk of metallic looking anima. She would yank hard on it, pulling it up at the deer from below towards its stomach, and pulling herself down towards its back with quite some speed. One way or another, she planned on hitting this thing.

“You’re at the center of my attention! Or is that not good enough for you?” She asked in a mocking tone.

Aries | Park's forest
The feeling of breaking flesh and bone under Aries's fist filled his chest with a deep feeling of satisfaction. Its foul blood coated his hand and dripped onto the ground in fat blotches. Aries face spread into a manic grin, his eyes piercing and wide, savoring the injury before him.

Aries knew he was supposed to continue the onslaught, a familiar desire to maim becoming almost unbearable. It was only the filthy demon blood that dripped from his fist that made him hesitate just long enough for the demon to flee. His gaze dropped to it; how long had it been? The demon's movement caused Aries' eyes to shoot back onto his target, stopping the thoughts barely formed.

He pushed back the ablaze desire inside him, wiping his hand on his shirt to ignore the slight tremor in his hand. His predatory eyes shifted to Nikklaüs at the sound of his voice. For a moment, the hunger turned to the other, lasting longer than before, as if Aries were deciding whether the prey in front of him would taste better than the one fleeing. The silence between them lasted a little too long as the line between man and beast blurred. What place did language hold in a blood-coated mind?

"Talking doesn't kill demons," Aries said simply, his teeth barred as he spoke. It took only a moment more before Aries took off after the demon as well, his attention returing to the scent of the fleeing demon. It wasn't hard for Aries to follow the demon; even if it weaved in and out of sight, the trail of its scent guided Aries's hunt.

If only the chase had been alone, maybe then Aries could have been graced silence. Of course, Nikklaüs did not let Aries have something as simple as that. Aries grinded his teeth further in annoyance as the desire to rip apart his classmate got even stronger. Did this idiot seriously not know how to stop talking? It is like he is asking for a demon to silence him for good.

Idiots like that always end up dead, too busy focused on the next comment and not the demon coming up behind him. Words did not win a battle.

'you going to cry, petite 8?' The infuriating laughter made him growl as he slashed at him through the bars.
'Awe... looks like you are too short to reach me! Try again next time'

'come on, petite 8, you can do better than that! Everyone else is so scared of you, but you can't even reach my throat to tear it out!' 8 spat out black blood, pushing his nails into the concrete ground in anger until they cracked.

'too slow~'

'try again petite 8~'

'Á̴̮w̶͙͌e̵̯̎,̶̦͋ ̵͕́i̸̩̇s̸͎̋ ̸̳͂p̷̺̚e̴͕͑t̶̬̑i̴͙͝ț̸̚e̶̮̋ ̸̟̂8̵͙͂ ̸͎͝ṱ̵͊ị̶̊r̵̆͜e̸̫̓d̸͍͘?̶̭́ ̷̹̉Ă̵̟ṋ̷̽d̵̮̑ ̷̪̍h̵̳̕e̴̢͋ŕ̷̘e̷̳̾ ̴̣́I̶̠̍ ̴̙̆t̸̬̆h̴̝͝o̴̞̓u̸̺̐g̵̨͆h̸̲̋t̶͈̀ ̶͍́y̷̧̏ọ̵͌ư̴̯ ̶͙́w̸͓̎e̸̗̚ȑ̶̳e̵̝̕ ̴̤̑t̵͍̚h̷̩́é̶̜ ̷̖̆b̸̢͝e̸͚͊s̶̿ͅt̸̨̔ ̶͈́o̶̭͝f̶̰̿ ̴͖̐t̶̩̆h̵̪́ḙ̴̀-̴̳̈́' the red under 8's hands never felt so warm as he opened his mouth desperate to say words he did not know.

Aries let out a loud laugh, "I am not a fan of numbers, but I think the more important ones are the 2 hits I landed and the 0 you have. Or maybe flailing around like a helpless child is just your style?" Words always felt so strange coming from teeth made to tear and maim, but maybe Aries was a bit of an idiot too.

Opening Act Solirus Solirus November Witch November Witch Verite Verite

Screams momentarily drowned out the thrum of battle, filling Marianne’s gut with dread. She whipped her head back, watching as someone was pulled through a watery void by a tentacle, but not before being sprayed. It didn’t take much to pinpoint the culprit.

“Crimson, was that strictly necessary?” she shouted.

She shot a glare at Crimson, full of disapproval, but it seemed that the other was preoccupied. There were a few anima signatures that Marianne could identify without confusion, and what flared from Crimson was among them. Pain and the desire for retribution. She could feel the negative anima radiating through the air like the shouts of her demonic ally.

It wasn’t exactly surprising to witness rage from Crimson, yet the intensity of it was new. Even in the previous exam, when Mariana had almost died, the reaction wasn't this volatile. Marianne’s mind drifted for a moment. What had changed?

The swinging of horns brought her back to the present. She reeled back, leaning away from the strike just before the sharpened point could slice through her neck. More of her anima burned away from the effort, searing into her flesh and bone, but it only served to temper her focus. It was proof that she still had life to burn. So long as she was alive, she was fine.

It was a sentiment shared by the demon before her. The report mentioned its efficient regenerative ability, and now that she saw it in action it was clear that any wounds would be mended even in the midst of attack. The battle would be a matter of who could outlast the other, yet while Deerhead could recover from crippling injuries, they could not. If the battle kept up like this, it would be death by a hundred cuts.

On the opposite side of the battle, Annamarie managed to deflect the horn’s strike with the blunt of the scissorblades, bouncing back from the force yet unflinching in the wake of it.

Unfortunately, Valerie was not so lucky. Tied to the demon, she was slammed against the wall of the living arena. She hit it hard, and while Marianne didn’t make it in time to catch her, she was there to pick her up. Marianne checked her over quickly, checking for any major injuries. Regardless of if she found one or not, her words were the same.

“Get up, our fight’s not over.” Marianne said, extending a hand down to her ally and helping her back up to her feet. “Its regeneration will outlast us unless we find a way to exhaust its anima or exploit a weakness.”

Her brow furrowed as she tried to think up a strategy. It wasn’t until Crimson’s insult did she get an idea. Attention. It wanted attention. There was only one person on their side she knew could outmatch that need. She lowered her voice.

“Valerie, can you still use your anima to make sparks and firecrackers? We need something showy… something that can dwarf its performance. If we can lure it into using more of its anima to compete against us, we can limit its regeneration over time. You will no doubt draw its ire, but Annamarie and I will guard you.”

The doll had already been forced out of the fight, narrowly avoiding getting hit by Crimson’s summoned anchor. She hopped backwards, waiting for the danger of friendly-fire to pass, but upon Marianne muttering her plans, she disengaged. With mechanical grace, she bounded back and stood beside Marianne and Valerie, scissorblades held at the ready.

Marianne’s tired eyes trailed over to the spaces between the tree area, now vacant. This would be more difficult to accomplish without the audience. As much as she was loath to use nulls in such a manner, she had to admit they would have been useful in stoking the creature’s pride.

There was a possible alternative she could think of, but she was reluctant to use it. Even now, in the midst of battle, she chose to keep it secret. Denial, shame, dread? Marianne had been unable to grasp the reasoning behind why she hadn’t shown or told anyone about it, except the Vice Principal who had witnessed it. Not even Nikklaus or Jaquie. Only at times when she was absolutely alone did she dare to even acknowledge it, quietly and with guilt. The accumulation of her sins. To accept it was to accept that she had failed and that every effort had been futile.

As Valerie continued to strain to try and hold Deerhead in place with her lasso made of light, even with the extra strength granted from her Amplification, she felt herself slowly grow a bit more comfortable with unleashing her new technique on the demon. Maybe she really could get some good, practical use from this new power after all.

"I-I got it! I think I got it!" She exclaimed through gritted yet excited teeth, teetering on almost looking like a tight grin. "Guys, I think I got--"

CRACK!

As Valerie's body crashed into the wall of the arena like a ragdoll, she was quickly forced to come to terms with the fact that she did not, in fact, "got it."

It was a surreal experience to be thrown around so easily by someone who was so much stronger than her, to the point that she'd probably be dead by now if not for the supernatural strength imbued within her body developed over the course of the school year. Even so, such an impact packed a mighty punch, leaving Valerie dazed and stunned for a few moments as she struggled to get back up, before Marianne came to her timely rescue, the pink-haired girl leaning on her for support.

"Nnngh... Uhm, yeah. Fireworks, I can still do that..." She mumbled in response to Marianne's words; despite her dazed state, even Valerie was able to piece together where she was going with this. Taking another moment to catch her breath, Valerie looked forward at Deerhead again, forcing a surge of resolve to return to her. As the wires connected, a smile couldn't help but tug at the corners of her lips as a second wind began to rise up within her.

"A performance to rival its own... Heh. You can call me the perfect bait, but I'll prefer being called the star attraction if you don't mind," she said, slowly being able to stand up on her own again, brushing her nose with her thumb. "All I need to do is outshine it? Fine then, I'll humble it in no time."

It was almost a shame. Even though this sort of emotion was the core of her anima, the desire to be at the center of attention, honing in on it so consciously and deliberately almost served as a reminder of things she would never feel, things her hands would never hold.

With a hop in her step, Valerie slapped her own cheeks with her gloved hands, formally knocking herself back into the game. "Okay, Marianne. Annamarie. I'm putting my trust in you two!" She exclaimed, before skipping over to a nearby rock lodged in the ground, making use of it like a makeshift stand to elevate her. Thrusting her arm up into the air with her index finger pointing toward the sky, a ball of light began to materialize at her fingertip, before shooting a few meters up into the air before exploding harmlessly, the spectacle of the firework hoping to draw Deerhead's attention away from Crimson.

"Ever heard of X-Men, Marianne? I'm just like Jubilee, because with me, every day's a celebration!" She exclaimed, a wide grin adorning her features and her gaze fixated on Deerhead. The young woman made a flashy pose, palms open as balls of light materialized between each of her fingers, like an idol captivating the audience from her stage, the throne from which everyone from below gave praise to her.

"Yo, Deerhead! I was wondering, why should it even be a big deal to witness you anyway? Not much going on with your looks if you ask me!" Valerie called out to the creature, hoping to divert its attention with her taunts as she threw her arms forward, the balls of light flying off her hands and straight at Deerhead, erupting into small explosions upon contact; mostly harmless but still irritating and stinging. From there, she snapped her fingers, causing more fireworks to go off at her own feet, another signal to draw attention to herself.

"If an audience were to look at both of us side by side, they'd be more eager to bear witness to me instead. I mean, between you and me, let's face it. I'm much easier on the eyes, don't ya think?" She asked with a cheeky grin and a wink.

That's right. Everyone shows up for Valerie Vu. Deerhead had nothing on her.

  • Curious continued onward deeper into the forest as more and more trees covered it. The students, however, maintained their pursuit of the demon as it maneuvered the terrain with remarkable confidence and agility. Then in a moment where it was concealed from Nikklaus's sights, a burst of anima surged from the demon as it momentarily turned towards the student's location and threw the sword like a javelin aiming to puncture his stomach.

Its attention then switched to Aries as it lunged towards him, kicking up dirt and leaves on the way to create a partial smokescreen.

“Oh, I’m sorry.” Crimson snapped at Marianne, clearly not in the mood to be taking criticism from anyone. “Would you rather them remain trapped and in danger or not? No good deed is ever big enough for you, huh?” Crimson vented her frustration with Marianne to her

She huffed, not even bothering to look at the twins as she spoke, focusing on her movements, and to conserve as much anima as possible. She didn’t need that pain coming back and incapacitating her. While her attention was mostly on the demon, it was wrenched away as Valerie was thrown across the arena, into the barky wall and onto the ground. Well, that’s what happened when someone got too cocky. Trying to lasso something of this size as a human wouldn’t work. Even Crimson could tell. She watched as Marianne helped Valerie to her feet, and thankfully she was okay. It would be annoying if they were already down a member.

Her attention was taken away from her two teammates as she cleaved the demon clean in half and landed on the ground while her anchor soared up, losing speed. It would soon return to earth. Valerie soon started to put on a show of all things. While Crimson was confused for a moment, she soon caught on to what the two must have been speaking about. This thing wanted attention, so maybe they’d have to beat it at its own game. But what that would do besides make it angry, she wasn’t sure. But Crimson decided to humor this plan and wherever it was headed.

It seemed she was correct, as the deer, which had just been cleaved in two by her, switched its attention from her and Marianne, who were the only two to hurt it so far, to Val. It left the two known threats to focus on Valerie. It must have had quite the ego…

Crimson raised a hand to shield her eyes as the red aura exploded around the demon, sending leaves, grass, and other debris into the air. But this meant it was an expected route this deer would take. Meaning her slow anchor could likely meet the deer at its destination. Yanking hard on the tendrils and chains connecting the anchor to her, it would also come hurtling at Valerie’s position. Crimson was sure the arcanists could avoid something as simple as a charging deer and a falling anchor. But just in case…

“You’d better move!”

She called out giving a warning that the demon facing away from her and the anchor could be mistaken as telling them to avoid the deer. But in reality, Crimson was warning them about her anchor. As she waited for the intersection of the deer and anchor, she’d notice the bird. Her eyes would linger on it for a moment, before moving a hand into Mariana’s pocket, and to her phone. She tossed it aside, into some nearby foliage, where tendrils would emerge and send a text message. It would be out of sight of the bird, and it wouldn’t be able to know what message was being sent, as Crimson herself wasn’t seeing it either.

It’s here.

"Well, that seems a bit unfair," Klaüs got a little caught up in the banter, playing directly into the issues Aries was dunking on him for. "'Cause no matter what happens, I can't win with those rules. The first hit that I land would obliterate it instantly, unlike yo—"

On the transition from one tree to the next, Curious' interception was let loose. Snapping back to, Nikklaüs twisted himself back in an attempt to avoid it but unfortunately couldn't fully maneuver out of the way from the lack of leverage he had while airborne. The sword nicked him at the top end of his left trapezius group, but even at a grazing pass it still transferred enough momentum to make him spin out until he hit the ground. He managed to control his decent by tucking in and spreading out so that he could land on all fours, still something that took a lot out of him from the height of the fall.

"You fucking—" Nikklaüs growled through gritted teeth. Locking eyes with the pseudo-Zantetsuken that descended point first into the ground just in front of him "—you're fucking dead!"

Charging forward he took that fake sword into his left hand, ready to run Curious through for it's hubris. Thinking it could get away with something like that, it was sorely mistaken. Flashing on his refined vision, Klaüs still couldn't pinpoint where Curious had ended up after its charge in Aries' direction. Still, he would catch it. Locking on to Aries' anima from through the dust cloud, he rushed through to meet it. As he ran however, the fake blade he carried started to shift and morph into a serpent-esque restraint that threatened to take his left arm and no doubt his other as well. But Zantetsuken still residing in his chest, he used his right arm to draw it into Curious' old arm and severing it in one motion. A motion that also pulled Zantetsuken up into a high Vom Tag guard that set him up to perfectly sever Curious instantaneously.

With the lunge, he sized up Aries' Anima and aimed for the space directly in front of him where he knew Curious would show. It couldn't see Klaüs the same way that he could see it, so the only thing he needed to seal its fate was to suppress his anima. It was difficult though, how could he feel anything other than his rage right now? Well, he could feel something, suppress something. Fear, sadness, regret, remorse. Those feelings he recalled so clearly from yesterday. Yeah, I can hide myself like this.

And Nikklaüs struck.
