An Attempted Dream

IMG_00022_zpsb82f16a2.jpg

I had this dream in Highschool that I would work as a comic artist, mangaka, character game designer... something that would involve me and a pencil. This was my anti-drug and greatest hobby. I dedicated... hundreds of hours to drawing.

Anyway I thought I would share my past doodles... ( sort of embarrassing when I look at them again now after so long )

Let me know what you think, even how I can improve, because even though I draw much less these days, I try not to lose my hard worked skill. Some people have talent for it, the art club in school showed that to me, but I had no talent starting out. Shows you we can do thing when we put our mind to it.

Well enough talk, pics pics pics!!!

Sure, others have talent, but if you don't "grow" that talent by practicing and trying new things it's pretty much useless. Even if you consider yourself to not be as talented at drawing as others it doesn't matter. Sure, it helps but not by a long shot. Hard work is gonna get you where you want to be. I know people who were very talented at drawing but just that. They wouldn't practice much if at all, while the seemingly "talentless" folk would draw everytime they had the chance. Who do you think was the better in the end? Anyway, that's the end of the rant.

You've got a basic understanding of proportions, but I recommend that you study some anatomy. You don't have to learn every single muscle in the body, but just to learn every group that stands out, you know? You should also look into figure drawing. What helps is first building a skeleton, a stickman per se and add features from there. It fleshes out the pose and gives you an easier time getting the proportions right in difficult poses. That's if you have time, of course. If I were you I wouldn't want this dream to die so keep on drawing. Some more advice I would like to give you is to not always rely on motivation. It can be tricky because you're not always gonna be motivated and you might not like the results you get when you're finished drawing, but it helps. Discipline yourself to work without motivation. Don't overwork yourself, even a doodle when you're bored can make a difference.

Good luck and keep at it! I'd love to see more of your drawings as you progress!

Thanks for your kind words!

When I started out, the internet was not mainstream yet, ( drawing tutorials on youtube and PDF how to draw files etc) So I went about drawing persons or characters without the basic ground work. I would basically draw them in whatever post in my head without the skeleton to guide me. Often time I would take pictures of poses and still shots of anime I watched to make the desired pose.

Here's something a bit different. When the internet and forums were popular, I tried making my own sigs and ava's just with pencil and PAINT for windows

It's a good idea to use still images for refference when starting out. It helps you in a number of ways. I actually did the same thing when I was younger, though I'd often have used Paint's line tool to get where I wanted.

The drawings are quite good considering they are done in Paint, which is in no way a professional illustration program. But that's a problem with the tool, not the author. I like the color palletes.

This portrait is of an RP character, sort of a modern day magic user. I tried going for the rich ojousama tsudere look

The following pic was a tribute to a RP character who had returned after much absence time

The Image below was an RP Character who I tried to make a classic beauty typical young woman with exception to her wheel chair which you do not see in this pic XP. She is the older sister of the girl in the first drawing in this post

I was never good with colors. Still am not, so many times the pics are simply lined drawings at best. Like the following

Later on when I joined a forum, sort folks were doing the color blocking for me on photoshop. It was done in their spare time so not pro like but I appreciated their help. Like the following drawing

They're nice. I like the first one the most, though.

The second one looks like it has some grand backstory behind it and with the third I think you nailed the look you were going for.

I know what you mean regarding that sometimes the simple linework without color works the best. I am also not as good as I'd want to be with colors.

I also very much like the second one very much. They did a pretty solid job with it. The use of Comic Sans is jnteresting, though.

Thanks!

Back in the day, I used to do the shading with pencil some of the following group drawings show that.

That second pic was actually part of a 100 page original comic based on members that were part of the forum. I do want to post it on RPN but it'll take some time, so I thought I'd post some random pics first then move on to that comic

This is a group pic of members of an RP, the Knights of the Princess, the Kingdoms Emblem shown in the background

img057.jpg
This is an all girl group pic of characters from RP's and my own writing stories. I did the shading in pencil before I started doing line art.

This was drawn during a math class I believe. You can actually see the ink onf the other side of the page lol

They all look amazing to me. You've put a great amount of details into them. The Emblem is really convincing and I really like the armor designs!

I know all too well about how satisfying it is to draw in math class. I swear that's the time when inspiration hits hard!

Here are some more drawings.

This next one was a character I designed for a magical school type RP set in Japan. I was going for the overly nerdy look, but that was really more of a disguise for who this character really was.

IMG_0003.jpg
This drawing was made for another school type RP but this school trained assassin's, as always still set in Japan. I basically took the character above, took away the nerdiness kept some physical features roughly the same and made him cooler.

This one I did not get to ink, was sort of in a rush. The character was a piano playing man of the cloth, a support character if anything.

IMG_0001.jpg
This drawing was of a guy who was a mad scientist/ cyborg

I got a laugh out of reading this old comic I drew, I thought I would share this with everyone here. The characters in this doujin were inspired from the activities of members on a forum. The forum itself was pictured as a city they live in. The characters reflect the members largely in name only as I simply made up personalities and actions as per the story.

Oh, wow! The more I scroll down, the better and better I can see you're becoming. Your drawings are darling, and it looks like you're going to evolve even further as an artist! I love your work. c:

You've got a great eye for form, pose and composition. That is talent. Drawing things well is mostly a matter of practice, not talent, from personal experience. You have skill where it counts bro, keep it up xD

Thank you! Those drawings are probably the peak of my skills currently. I do like them. A bit static in certain ones but they were supposed to be RP drawings anyway.

Thank you for your kind words! Although I may do it a little less these days, a skill I have dedicated years towards should not go to waste, so I practice every now and then. Here are some more works from the past. Actually a continuation of that doujjin I started posting.

The following pages I considered endearing and also a bit scary, scenes somewhat out of my comfort zone. I mean, one of the characters headshots a random woman. Back then I thought it was pretty out there for what I normally drew. We actually get to see more characters here and some plot is finally coming into play rather than just some random character encounters. So more of a doujin and less of a 4koma type deal. Enjoy!
