Alternative History RPs?

Morris

A Hunter Must Hunt
Hi everyone,

I am an entirely new member here at RPNation, but I have taken part in play-by-post roleplays in the past, particularly in the Inuyasha fandom and various Fantasy settings. I am most certainly looking forward to meeting the people of this great community.

However, I would like to ask for some advice now that I am here.

I am interested in creating a new RP on my own, one based on an alternative historical setting in medieval Europe (it could fit in under a Fantasy tag I guess). I can and am willing to provide any details at request.

My problem is that although I read over the rules, and inspected the forums, I couldn't find any guidelines and such regarding alternative historical roleplays. Are they accepted, or should I reconsider it? Do they violate rules because of possible underlying themes, even if I don't intend any infringements?

While some fandoms overlap with this issue and are accepted, I thought it would be best if I asked for information and hints at first. Insights from senior players and/or staff would be most appreciated.

I thank any and all help in advance.

As far as I know, there are many historical fiction roleplays that are usually either under realistic or fantasy depending on how much of the element you are using. In other words, I believe you are find to post an interest check as long as the theme isn't breaking any of the site rules and or going to offend someone. (Though there is little you can say without that happening these days...)

I see. Thanks for the advice.

It would be more fantastic than realistic. Essentially, someone brings magic to the world, and creatures of legend, mythology and folktales are coming back. In response, Inquisition is organized, etc. You know the drill in this kind of situation. This doesn't stop human kingdoms from infighting, per se, but having a common threat sure as heck does wonders in international diplomacy.

And... yeah. As much as I wish to avoid offending people, history has never been renowned for its political correctness. But to be honest, that's what I think is great about alternative history: that we know the mistakes we made, and we can, at least in our imagination, choose a different path.

From that description, I'd say it definitely belongs in the fantasy section.

Your characters do not have to act nice or say politically correct things, and themes don't have to be happy-go-lucky so long as all potentially offensive things are only in-character. Although, it would probably be best to specify the themes you're going for in the overview of your rp and maybe also somewhere in your interest check just so people have a warning. The site rules should specify what applies to in-character and what doesn't. I'm afraid I can't really be any more specific with what you've said so far, but if you want to ask about specific themes/situations/etc, I'd be happy to inform you about those. :)

I sincerely thank you for your help.

It has serious themes, but I don't want grimdark á la Warhammer or somesuch, nor do I wish it to devolve into debates about history or religion (especially redundant since alternative historical events can lead to alternative interpretations of both in the setting). The interest check post will have an elaborate explaination about the setting, relations between factions and what I'd like to focus on.

Would it be alright with you if I sent you a Personal Message for revision?

EDIT: Wait, nevermind. 10 post requirement is not yet reached... :P I guess I will post an interest check in the Fantasy section soon. I'm sure you'll take notice when it happens. :)
