Looking for advice for finding local roleplaying friends?

hi! i’m sorry if this is a weird thing to ask, or a weird place to ask it… i figured since this site is all about roleplaying, it might be worth a shot?

so i love roleplaying. loooove it. it’s probably my single biggest hyperfixation, but i don’t really have anyone to share it with. while i’m grateful for my friends irl, none of them are really into roleplaying the same way i am, and i so badly wish i had that friend who gets the hyperfixation and will gush with me. i’ve tried making friends online to gush about roleplaying with, but when you’re online there’s always the possibility that you just. stop hearing from someone one day and then never talk to them again. i’m terrified of getting attached and then losing someone, so i’ve really wanted to find someone in my area i can, like, drive to and visit and hang out with. i have no idea how to go about trying to meet someone with the very specific interest of roleplaying, though. ;-;

the closest thing i can think of is to try to find dungeons & dragons groups near me, but to be honest, i don’t really like playing d&d. the performance aspects of it make me really anxious; i always end up feeling put on the spot and stress over what to say or do. i love writing in general, but having the extra time to sit down and think about a post before i write it is so much better for me, too. on top of that, i have a VERY difficult to accommodate work schedule, so even if i were to find a d&d group, it’d be a challenge to be able to make all the sessions.

so i’m not really sure where to start. is there anyone here who’s had experience finding friends irl who like to roleplay or any general advice you can share? i’d appreciate any insight! ; v ;

go to the d&d group. if you play d&d with them, they might play what you want to play too?? take turns? you might not do well, but it is better then nothing?

Hi!! I'm a little late to responding, but I would really suggest checking out if your local library has any events. In my experience, writerly folks tend to hang out there and it's pretty easy to make friends. It doesn't have to be a RP-based event — say, my library does tea on Tuesdays and arts and crafts later in the week. Even if you don't end up meeting RPers specifically, you might get along with other literarily-minded folks! And the vibes are nice and relaxing in my experience.

My other advice would be visiting the gaming stores near you and seeing if they have any connections. Admittedly, this might land you with more TTG-minded folks than RP specifically, but it's worth a shot!

I wish you luck in your friend-finding journey!! 💜
