Add-on For Profile Music?

Not sure if this has already been asked, but what about it? A song that plays on someone's profile? Encourages jumping onto other people's pages and starting a conversation??


Since this is a PG-13 site, maybe this could start off as a test with only instrumentals allowed?

I love music and think this would be a great idea but there are some problems.


People could put an inappropriate song or something, so then it might be smarter to submit a song to a staff member, they check it out, and then say it's okay. But then that's just taking up staff member's time. I think it's a really nice idea though, would spark some conversation.

Of course I've thought about something like this before, but it would require more moderation, something that the staff here clearly doesn't have time to do.

I guess I have a few comments to say on the matter.


While the idea does seem pretty cool, there are many things the Administration has to consider when including something like this to the site. The first is how many people actually desire music to be playing in the background of the site, second is what are the technical requirements to add such a feature, the third is if the new feature would require additional staff labor to maintain and finally the fourth thing to consider is if the effort going into such a feature is beneficial for the time being spent. Each of these questions have to be answered by the Administration and discussed at length for something to be included in the site.


At the moment there are several road-blocks to this proposal at every one of those questions. For we don't know how many people would like music playing on the site, as many on the internet (myself included) don't necessarily like the idea of music being played without activating it. We also don't have any addon or functionality on the site that currently allows for this, so we have to commission it or custom develop something that could host sound files. We also have to consider from the technical perspective whether this would slow down the site or affect the server anyway. Another concern is also the moderation (which had been brought up before) that would further spend site labor. Likewise there is also the question of the true benefit such a feature brings to the community beyond being cool.


Not to mention we also have to concern ourselves about music hosting and the legal ramifications behind that because of copyrighted music.


However so I don't sound just like one giant debbie downer. I will state that you can post music on your profile currently. You are free to use all BBcodes available to you normally. So that does mean Soundcloud embed files and Youtube videos can be posted in your About Me section. So you can, in a sense, already post music on your profile it just won't automatically play.
