So, still thinkin of going a dashing smuggler type? As stands, we've got @Captain Hesperus as a long range sniper, myself a mid range stealthy gunman/pilot with some technical skill, and whatever the heck @Mordecai plays, but, we're not officially starting for a couple weeks so she's got time at that

Hehehehehehehehehe! SO looking forward to this! Character inbound!

Captain Hesperus

So, I've got locations, I've got Organizations, but...what tab should I use for Technology? Captain, you're an admin-type, is it possible to make a custom tab or is it all out of the pre-made options?

I think I can add a custom tab, I'll need to tinker with the tabs. So, you'll be wanting a Tech tab and a Locations tab, yes?

Captain Hesperus

No, that's me. Still working on altering the tab name. Might need a bigger brain on the subject...

Captain Hesperus

I have the rules. Alright, 3 minute character concept lets do this:

We've got the dashing smuggler, we've got a pair of combatants

College professor, Earthborn: Doctorate in computer science with a heavy interest in Psychology, xenobiology and military science

Part of a collection of scientists wanting to slingshot humanity into transhumanist paradise through digitizing the human psyche. Their first step is to create fully sentient Friendly AI.

Still slightly unsure as to what the main plot is, but I figure we're going to be getting into hijinks in space: my character figures not only would a vacation be in order, but a spacer job would let him meet new people, see new things, and make some money to invest back into his research.

Probably play someone down to Earth, very practical, with a wide base of knowledge and easy access to space-wikipedia. The straight man to any silliness, tries to stay calm and coordinated. Is incredibly passionate about his work, and will do just about anything to make progress on what he sees as the path to human ascendancy. Perhaps a little more prideful than necessary, and probably overestimates his own abilities while always wanting to learn more about what other folks can do. I reckon his most pronounced trait is going to end up being rampant curiosity.

If I could have a semi-sentient AI prototype, something more advanced than usual but error-prone and in constant need of fixing, that would be nice. Probably would give me a good way to conceivably access some of the more awesome parts of being what is essentially a white-hat decker.

Does that sound good?

A science-y type? Works well, just know we may have a secondary scientist in the party joining us, particularly in medical and nanotechnology fields, but also in theoretical physics as well. So, a different science skill set. In fact, there's a chance you've worked with him. If you wouldn't mind, your character has previously worked with a Dr. Leonard 'Harrier' Beckett, and a Dr. William Preston. Harrier was a quiet genius, and tended to come up with some cray original ideas. Preston, while not incredibly original had a real knack for taking things and improving then tenfold. Harrier vanished a few years back, but Preston's still around, and if you're working with him still it'd give a real strong reason for you to be where the opening scene is going to be

Oh, also, while not necessary, it's become something of an inside joke to name characters in the main party after a bird.

Well then, Dr.Perry Grine should work for a name, right?

I'd expect Perry would be involved in nanotechnology development, since wetware is on the list of "things that we need to get done" for the Transhumanist Association. I'd prefer for Perry to be working in a TA group on sentient AI currently, but I would be down with him having worked with Preston.

Also, character sheet incoming.

Also, sorry if I missed this, but how prevalent is cyberware, and how advanced is it?

To what degree of cyberware? I've tossed up a small amount of tech stuff, check under the Updates tab (Hespie is gonna rename it at some point, :D )

So, considering your story begins at the Cydonia Shipyards, I think Cecily's intro will be getting into the shipyards' VIP event using a pass sold to her by a contact from the Spent Cartridge bar. She's there to find a client, identified only as 'Oba-san (Grandfather) Saito' who has a 'birthday present' for her. Whether this present is patronage and protection or a means to either escape Mars or disappear into the Underworld completely, she's not sure. But at the same time, she's fully prepared for a Yakuza trap. She'll be turning up in her 'Keiko' alternate identity.

I feel obligated to point out that combustion firearms can be fired in space. Cartridges provide their own expanding gas. Cooling will be the main difficulty for vaccum-fired weapons, but I assume cooling spaceship parts is not difficult in this far future, and I do not see small arms being fired enough to face a cooling problem in vacuum: I expect they'd be used mostly in pressurized spaces, where cooling is done by the air.

Just Googlied it, yup, they've got their own oxidizer in cartridges now...I was unaware of this. However, we can still keep MCRs and gas guns due to the lack of/countered by gas vents recoil, which could in fact be a big deal in little to no gravity environments. Also, gas guns and MCRs are still highly effective in areas with extremely flammable atmospheres, and gas guns in particular, as I've stated, can have lower pressure shots, which'll also be useful in sealed areas when you don't want to punch a hole into space.

[QUOTE="Captain Hesperus]So Croesus has a Skelton in his closet, who knew...?

My sense, according to the book, was that was what the criminal career fell under - since the actual evidence needs to stay from the authorities lest he be jailed.

Thorn, that all makes sense, but I would remind you that frangible rounds are not only available but standard in firearms today. They absolutely will not cause any sort of damage beyond the superficial to craft, and even if the person is using less malleable rounds I still seriously doubt that a ship capable of withstanding the stresses of space travel, not to mention faster-than-light speeds, can be punctured by small arms fire. Small arms fire is generally pretty shit at damaging materiel, and if a round is likely to break the ship's seal, space dust hit at whatever massive speed I am sure the ships will be able to reach will punch right through the hull as well.
