☼ Annamaria ☼

Anna stood in front of her closet, examining her clothing. Even though she had been home for a month, most of her clothing was still packed away in her suitcases. She settled on a simple

outfit that seemed patriotic enough. Unlike her mother, Anna was never into getting all decked out for holidays. If her mother had it her way she would walk around wearing an American flag. But that was her mother, she liked to get all flashy and tacky for any holiday. One year for Valentines day her mother wore a flashing heart sweater just for the hell of it. It was the ugliest thing ever, but she had to admit, it was a great memory

Quickly slipping into her outfit, she ran down the stairs and went sliding across the hardwood floor. She could hear her father in the kitchen making his famous coleslaw and she could smell her mother's apple pie wafting through the air. Sauntering into the kitchen she passed her brother, Kyle, and gave him a quick flick on the ear as he tried to sneak a bite of the slaw. Retaliating, he gave her a light punch on the arm, almost missing. She was the baby of the family, but that didn't stop her brothers from beating up on her. Even though she was vertically challenged, she was always able to hand it back to them. They called her their little spider monkey.

It's was 5 o'clock and people were already starting to congregate outside their house. Anna couldn't help but smile as she looked out the window. Block parties were her favorite. So many of her best memories were tacked on to a block party. Not to mention it was the one time she could drink and her parents didn't care. Slipping on her shoes, she turned on her heels and grabbed the bowl of coleslaw before heading out the front door. Despite it being July the weather was a bit cool, then again 70 degrees was cold in California. When the dry air hit her tanned legs a slight chill went up her spine, but the smile on her face remained intact.

-- Jake Hollowel --

Jake was late for the celebration. He hadn't noticed that his alarm had been going off for the past fifteen minutes, trying fruitlessly to wake him from his slumber. He pounded the off button lazily and rubbed his eyes. "So much for getting there early," he mumbled as he dragged himself towards the bathroom. When he was all clean and ready, he put on a simple white polo shirt, rolled at the sleeves, dark jeans, and matching dark brown boots. The only sign of patriotism he had in his person is a kerchief resembling the American flag. He tucked it in the front pocket of his shirt, letting the edges show.

He had been up all night with his mates, watching every horror movie available in Netflix. When they were done, they decided to scare themselves silly until they simply fell asleep, not realizing that tomorrow is a big day. It was early in the morning that Jake had realized, and after rousing his friends, they went back to their own places, each getting only minimal sleep. After setting his alarm, Jake decided then and there to be one of the first to attend the block party, just for the fun of rubbing it to his friend's faces. Now it seemed that they will be the one rubbing it to his face, that is if they are there already.

With a small smile on his face, Jake went out of the front door, letting the cool July air greet him. He supposed he should check in on his parents, but knowing them, he assumed that they were at the party as of now. His deep blue motorbike sat waiting for him, still glistening from the good polishing he gave it two days ago. Shoving his hands in his pockets, he walked towards the congregation.

"Hey Jake!" Mike called out from the crowd, his hand waving in the air. "Guess who got here earlier than you?" he said in a teasing tone. Jake smiled and ran a hand through his hair. "I get it, I get it. Sheesh." They laughed as Mike pulled him towards their friend circle. Sam and Nate is there was well. They all did their secret handshakes and shared jokes with one another. Jake hadn't had the time of his life until he got back here a month ago. Now he had been relieving all of his childhood memories. Only now, something's missing. Jake turned and scanned the faces of the people in the crowd. He doesn't know if he could still recognize her, his childhood nemesis. Truthfully, he missed picking fights with her. She was still small and boxy before, with dozens of freckles so he called her 'toady.' He on the other hand, changed only by a little. "Who are you lookin' for?" Nate's voice snapped him back to reality. Jake shook his head, "No one," he smiled, as they continued with their jokes.

Tromping down the stair, Anna headed directly for the coolers. In a swift manner she strolled passed thefood table and set the coleslaw down. Without missing a step, she kept moving towards the coolers. Sheknew exactly what treasure was inside the plastic shell; beer. She couldn't wait to get hands on it. It was justwhat she needed to get through a long night of nosy neighbors poking her with questions of how school andher love life were going. That was the problem with living in such a tight knit neighborhood; everyone knows everything.

Anna weaved in and out of the crowd, occasionally bumping into someone, but she made her way to the cooler. Just as she was about to reach in, Ms. Finkle's straggly old voice drew her away. The old lady stood there, cane in hand, and gripped about kids Anna's age. How they gallivanted through the streets half clothed and drinking alcohol. Anna was convinced that Ms. Finkle was crazy, she didn't have a filter at all, and she made her feeling about you known. There was no sugar coating. Anna stood there with her arm's crossed until the old lady shuffled off mumbling some obscene words. Letting out a long sigh of relief she turned on her heels and snagged an ice cold beer.

Bottle in hand Anna made her way back through the crowd looks for the faces of her childhood friends. She knew they were just who she needed to to put off the impending doom of her mothers embarassment. It was only a matter of time before her mother would come strolling out of the house in search of Anna. Whenever she came home from school her mother would soend hours bragging about her hot shot college student to all the neighbors, and of course Anna would be forced to listen to the same story and comments at least ten times in one night. Just as the thought ran through her head the high pitched and highly offputting sound of her mothers voice, mixed with her heavy New York accent hit her Anna's ears. Immediatly she took off in the opposite direction, she didnt hear what her mother had said, she wasnt even sure if anything was directed at her. but none of it mattered, she just wanted to keep the distance.

Her once skillful bobbing and weaving turned into a frantic, and possibly quite awkward jog. Not even looking where she was going, Anna found herself running straight into the back side of boy about her age. At first she didnt recognize him, but the more she looked at his larger stature and dark hair something about him seemed familiar.
"Oh god, I'm so sorry." She said in a sheepish tone.

(( i am so, so, sorry that took so long, I've been very busy lately ))
