GUIDELINES...
Hello hello, welcome to the applications for this rp! Applications are not a full cs and there's no need to worry about the details just yet. You're just pitching the idea of the character, so a few paragraphs should be fine.

Here's what the app should include:
犭Character name
犭Pronouns
犭Role
犭Brief overview of personality and background

You can use my app below as a model for this. The roles and rules are still included in this post for reference as well. Feel free to reach out with any questions!

ROLES...

CAT (open): For their entire life, the Cat has had a reputation as a troublemaker and a delinquent. They found early on that it was the only way to get attention from the caretakers who seemed to ignore them otherwise, and bad attention was better than no attention at all. What the Cat didn't realize was that they'd be able to actually push too far. Now as an adult, their latest mistake seems to have finally put them over the edge: Their parents have cut off contact, and their friends want nothing to do with them. When the Cat first uses the mask, it's to visit the family home they're now unwelcome at in their new form. Being seen as a stray grants them the freedom to do whatever they please without consequence, and all the attention they could desire just for playing cute.
DOG (open): The Dog comes from a rich and well-established family. Their home was always a cold one as they fought for their family's approval, and all the Dog ever wanted was the warmth seen in the lives of others. Their desire for companionship was exploited when they entered a whirlwind relationship with someone disapproved of by the family. When they came clean about their love, the family instantly cut them off and removed any chance at inheritance. After the allure of their family name was gone, their lover showed their true colors and disappeared, leaving the Dog truly alone in the world for the first time. The mask offers a chance to be turned into a creature easily loved and accepted, even by strangers.
FOX (open): The Fox has been taught all their life that they're rotten through to the blood. Raised by a single parent, they watched as their guardian did everything possible to get by: Lie, cheat, steal, and most damningly for them both, take on massive amounts of debt. When the world caught up to them and their parent was imprisoned for those crimes, the Fox was thrust into adulthood fast. It's up to them to fulfill their parent's previous debt, and they've done so the only way they know how: By becoming a con artist. But with the mask, they can leave behind the shackles of debt and reputation that tie down their human name.
TANUKI (open): The Tanuki was always warned against a creative career, but they had faith in their passions and chose to follow their dreams. Moving to Tokyo was the first step towards that goal, the starting point to making a name for themselves. At least, that was the plan. But now, after over a year in Tokyo, the Tanuki only has a dead-end job to show for it, one that leaves them too tired to do anything but make ends meet. They dodge calls from home whenever they can, too ashamed to carry on their lies about those dreams coming true. With the mask, they can hide away from both their work and their shame, and disappear to the fantasy world they've always been warned away from.
RABBIT (taken): The Rabbit became a child actor before they could process the concept. While young, they were famous for their appearances, and became the main source of income for their family. But no one escapes aging, and as their childish charm faded and jobs stopped coming in, the tension in the family grew stronger and stronger. Now, even as an adult, the Rabbit is pressured into acting like their childish persona by their parents, who demand that they continue trying out for roles--nevermind that the Rabbit no longer has any interest in the spotlight. The mask gives them a chance to run from the predatory eyes of both their family and the public.
MOUSE (open): The Mouse was always praised for their maturity as a child, and they seemed to excel in every subject. It was a given that with such a great mind, they would follow in the footsteps of their parents and pursue the same illustrious career. The Mouse always assumed that at some point they'd find the courage in themselves to say no, and finally admit their true passions to anyone besides themselves. But even now, as an adult by all accounts, that moment hasn't come. The Mouse is on track to be successful in every sense of the word, but they feel as if their life doesn't belong to them. With the mask, they can slip through the cracks and do as they please, entirely unnoticed.

RULES
ONE. While the rp itself shouldn't be graphic, the character backstories can deal with some heavy themes, so all players must be 18+. The characters themselves will all be young adults: Technically grown, but all still immature enough to run away from their problems with magic facial accessories.
TWO. Roles aren't necessarily first come first serve, but I'll be judging the best fit for the roles as applications come in. We'll be using an application process, so you won't have to fill out a full character sheet until the role is absolutely yours! The roles are designed to be flexible (for example, the Tanuki's passion can be anything from painting to rakugo performance) so please feel free to get creative with it. If you have any questions, you can dm me at any time ^^ In addition, all faceclaims should be illustrated/animated.
THREE. Discord is required for OOC! Plotting will be an important part of this story. The major focus here is on the relationships between characters, and how those relationships change the way they approach the issues in their lives. Get juicy with it!
FOUR. Activity requirements will be lax, and I don't expect fast-paced posts. However, OOC communication is expected, and if you don't reply to multiple attempts to reach out after radio silence, you'll be booted from the server and your character will be written out. In terms of writing, lazy lit is expected: In-character posts should be multiple paragraphs, but there's no need to stretch for word count.

the rabbit

name

Mirin Miura

aka

Riniko

pronouns

she/her

role

rabbit

No one cares whether an infant is any good at acting: If the baby is cute and doesn't burst into tears at the sight of a camera, it's fit for the stage. Luckily for her parents, Mirin was nothing but well-behaved, and her soft smile won over every casting agent. She won several small commercial roles in her infancy, but it was the role she took on at three years old that would change her family's life for good.

This was how her parents told the story: They'd been struggling every day, barely paid enough to get by, and still going out of their way to audition their daughter wherever they could. She was meant to be a star, they said--they wanted to share her smile with the world. And then she was cast as Riniko, and all their dreams came true. Mirin's smile was playing in everyone's living rooms when they tuned in for their weekly viewing of the TV drama she was cast in. And her parents, of course, would never have to work again.

With how often she was told about it, it was easy for Mirin to forget that she really had no memory of her life before the role, or the way it changed for her after. In her memory, there was no life without. Mirin and Riniko were one and the same.

And two decades later, that name continued to follow her. It was by far the most notable role she'd ever had, even after the show's final season. Not for a lack of trying--Mirin had gone to every audition she could find, but at a certain point a cute face stopped making up for a total lack of skill in acting. The older she got, the less she could pull off that childish smile, and the more her personality became impossible to hide.

Mirin was stiff and awkward, rarely expressive, too placid to pull off dynamic performances. No amount of time with an acting coach seemed to change her flat tone of voice or how she let her mind wander even in auditions. She still wore her hair in the Riniko pigtails for the brand collaborations and commercial spots that now made up most of her appearances on screen, like somehow it'd distract from the fact that she'd gone and grown up, and had no business being in the spotlight.

When riding the metro, she sometimes came face to face with a poster of herself, dressed like her childhood role and smiling awkwardly while she held up whatever branded product she was shilling out. Riniko was inescapable--and Mirin couldn't help but wonder. Maybe if she'd never gotten the role, then her parents would've given up on their dreams of raising an actress. Maybe then, she wouldn't be dressed like a toddler and still faced with rejection after rejection, or forced to daydream her way through acting lessons with her coach. It was her greatest, most selfish wish, to wake up in a world where no one knew her as anything but Mirin.

A wish that would never come true: But the Mask Seller offered her the next best thing.

the cat

gov. name

Mizutani Junko

a.k.a.

Juno

pronouns

she/they

role

the cat

Vulgar, Violent and Volatile, 'Junko' was called anything but the definition of their given name— obedient child. She abhorred the title, a wretched label that seemed to cling to her skin despite her being the very antithesis of it. Even its shortened form, Jun, felt mocking because of its implications. Purity? How could they be pure when they felt like they were rotting inside, unloved in a cold home.

They were happy once, she thinks. Juno’s mother had always been cold, even when they were a lukewarm household of three, she smiled. Until Juno's father left for a wealthy younger woman.

Ice seemed to seep into their mother's body, because never once did Juno see her smile again. Instead of becoming closer, her father's departure had driven them away. The girl became a shadow in her own home and neglect came soon after. Juno didn’t realize it then but they had lost two parents that day.

Left in the care of a rotating cast of nannies, Juno's sense of stability crumbled. Each nanny change brought with it a new face, a new set of rules, and a new challenge for Juno to navigate. And all throughout, Juno's mother was absent. The lack of consistency in their caregivers deepened the isolation they felt within the confines of their own home. Anger came soon after.

Juno begun to act out. Both at home and at school, their actions were fueled by a deep-seated need for attention, even if it came in the form of reprimand or scolding—they found that it was better than nothing. Gaining a reputation as a delinquent, she became notorious. Graffiti adorned the city walls with Juno’s distinctive mark, and rumours of their involvement in petty theft and bullying circulated among both students and teachers. But each act of defiance was just as much a step further away from their mother, as it was a cry to be noticed by her, or anyone for that matter.

With every rebellious act against their mother, Juno assumed it’d be their last, but to her relief it never was. She thought the worst had been the time she keyed her stepdad’s car, but Juno never imagined her mother would throw her out and turn her back completely.

It was a night out gone wrong.

Often, Juno's mischievous nature found an outlet in the vibrant nightlife of Tokyo. In pulsating beats and neon blue lights, Juno felt alive— until the time she found herself in a bar fight. It wasn't her first time in a physical confrontation, but never had one been so brutal. Soon enough people begun breaking bottles and Juno knew they had to get out of there, they couldn't get out unscathed however, and wound up at the police station.

This time, Juno's actions had truly pushed their mother to the brink. The fear that had always lingered in the back of Juno mind, the fear of losing the last semblance of maternal connection, became reality. Mrs. Mizutani made the painful decision to kick them out of their home. With no place to call home, Juno sought refuge in the homes of friends, and soon enough they got sick of her too. One by one, they grew weary of Juno’s presence, unable to bear the turbulence that followed them wherever they went.

Juno was completely alone, until the Mask Seller gave them a chance to start over, a chance to see their mother again.

the fox

name

osamu sato

nicknames

samu

pronouns

role

the fox

how exactly do you live a normal life? osamu has lived a life filled with violence and crime his whole life. from a young age, he has seen his parents sleep around with other people to scam them out of money, got taught by his uncles and parents on how to cheat and gamble. his life has been a kaleidoscope of shadows and deception, leaving little room for the mundane routines that define a normal existence.

the concept of a stable and calm life felt like an alien notion to osamu, whose upbringing was steeped in the unforgiving ethos of survival at any cost. the relationships he formed were tainted by the lingering distrust that stemmed from a childhood marked by his parents' manipulative escapades.

the pivotal moment that marked the descent of osamu's world into chaos occurred when justice finally reached his parents, ensnaring them in its unforgiving grasp. the labyrinth of deception they had meticulously woven around themselves began to unravel, thread by thread, until the intricate tapestry of their criminal endeavors lay exposed.

the sirens and the authoritative knock on the door shattered the fragile illusion of normalcy that osamu had clung to. as law enforcement descended upon their once-secure abode, chaos erupted within the confines of his home. the air grew thick with tension, and the weight of impending consequences hung heavily over the family like a dark storm cloud.

as he navigated the complexities of adulthood, he found himself caught between the dichotomy of the life he knew and the elusive desire for a semblance of normalcy. breaking free from the clutches of a criminal legacy seemed an insurmountable task, and the shadows of his family's transgressions and their debt weighing on him cast a long, looming pall over any attempts at redemption.

struggling against the gravity of his upbringing, osamu sought solace in the small moments that hinted at the prospect of a different reality. a stolen glance at a tranquil family enjoying a simple meal, the distant laughter of children playing in a park—these fleeting glimpses of normalcy ignited a flicker of hope within him. yet, the question lingered like a persistent shadow: could he truly escape the clutches of a life forged in the crucible of crime?

in the labyrinth of his own making, osamu sought redemption as if it were a distant mirage, always shimmering just out of reach. the question of how to live a normal life remained an enigma, an unanswered riddle echoing through the corridors of osamu's complex existence, propelling him forward into an uncertain future. until the mask seller helped him to answer that question.

Rin was a product of the prodigious and successful Furude family, a pillar in Japanese society of culture, knowledge, and athleticism. They were not in the elite percent of wealth, but they were certainly well-off financially. That is, until his mother fled with a baby Rin from under the thumb of this family she despised. She was an esteemed professor, so she would be fine -- and she no longer cared in disappointing her family or smearing their name. She had an apartment in Tokyo, and years later, she met someone wonderful. A retired military, current business tycoon that dominated Tokyo's real estate. And they fell in love. Rin's step-father eagerly stepped into the role as Head of the House and treasured taking care of Rin. Perhaps his parents were too domineering with his time -- sports, educational extracurriculars, early morning study/runs with his new father -- so Rin barely had time to develop his own impressions of the world.

Of a slow and painful illness, his mother died when he was 14, despite no expense being sparred by his father to find a cure. He had enough money and prestige for Rin's mother's side of the family to leave them be, but he still allowed Rin to see them once his scheduled allowed. Rather than having time to properly grieve, he plunged into work and into Rin's life. In a sense, this started a bond between the two, almost a co-dependency. Rin studies, currently stands at the top of his class in a prestigious university in Tokyo, and is head of all the sports teams he mans -- soccer, baseball, martial arts. He also excels in languages, particularly English, Spanish, French, (and is now trying for Russian) and mathematics. He is called a genius, but it is simply good genetics and hard work and an overzealous father.

The stress has gotten to him. His mother's ghost is catching up with him. He wants to cry and grieve, but he fears of triggering a great depression in his father and not meeting expectations. Around people, friends, he is contained. Always appearing content, smiling, and friendly. He does not talk much, rather directing a conversation to the other person and listens well. He is very much accustomed to not having opinions or thoughts about things -- so he mimics expertly what another person in a conversation may want to hear.

When approached by the Mask Seller, it was the very first decision in his life he made on his own in direct rebellion of his father.

The Tanuki

name

Masaharu Tomioka

nicknames

Haru, Tomo

pronouns

he/they

role

tanuki

Born in the rural areas outside of the city lends a hand to being able to daydream more often than others. Beautiful nature scenery all around, fields of crops that feed the homes of many people, including your own, and a small school where everyone knows everyone else. This was the life that Masaharu grew up in. His family weren’t farmers but he had many friends whose families did farm, they ran a local market and bakery instead, where he would often help. He didn’t stand out much in academics and was well-liked by many. Masaharu was friends with everyone but enjoyed his time alone to pursue his hobby of art and writing.

He was a creative child and was often the type to daydream and come up with stories in his head, creating worlds beyond others' imagination. Haru shared these with friends and at a young age started to draw the characters in the story, often inspired by some of his closest friends, and the world based on the endless fields and forests that were only a bike ride away from home. When not doing homework or in the shop helping his parents, he was drawing and writing, and his parents were worried that he wouldn’t think of another career. They were adamant about trying to push him to be a doctor or lawyer, even a teacher would be okay, but to not pursue anything art-related. His mom would tell “horror stories” of friends she knew who tried to pursue our careers only to fail and come back home.

However, these stories were never enough to stop him from pursuing his artistic passions. He entered various small art competitions in his local area and would always come out at the top, with his more artistic style outside of his anime and manga style often described as “daydreams coming to life” and “A fantasy lens of our world and what our current surrounds might look like if magic existed”. He always took inspiration from those around him and simply combined it with the magic of the fantasy world. Confident in his ability, Haru still left home to pursue the thing his parents warned him about, art.

Attending an art school in Tokoyo, he truly began to refine his skills as an artist, submitting work off to the side to magazines, wanting to be successful, and did end up getting noticed quickly, and shortly after graduating, he applied to become an assistant, helping with the more minor jobs a real mangaka wouldn’t have time to complete. It was labor worked but he was having the time of his life, and though he was living paycheck to paycheck, he was still hopeful.

Haru would often get many compliments from the other assistants and even though higher than him, often spending his time learning from the real artists and writers of the story, one day, he decided to try and show them his work, to maybe get critiques back on it, and what he didn’t know, at the time, what people would do to be and stay successful. The story he wrote as a child, has been refined over the years and bought in to show the mangaka he has been working for. They were a smaller artist but growing in popularity, who decided to take a look at it, asking Haru to leave it overnight. And just like that, the idea he shared to get feedback on, was swooped up and taken from him. He was a friendly person, he got along with everyone, but even he had to fight back against this.

Haru tried to go to the company and explain that the mangaka stole his work, but no one would listen to him, instead, rumors were spread that he tried to steal this idea from the artist, and he was promptly fired. Haru was close to his family and would keep them up to date with his life, mostly, bragging about how close he was to maybe getting his title published, but now with the story he held the closest to his hard stolen, his job taken under his feet, and his dreams ripped out from his heart, he found himself lost. Haru didn’t have the heart to explain to his family what happened, knowing they would come back and say “I told you so” and “We tried to warn you”, he couldn’t go home.

He kept up the lie, and instead, got a job at a little convenience store and simply, vanished from the art world. His passion had died down a lot, and he rarely if ever picked up and pen and pencil, daydreaming less often, and simply was trying to get by. He had no hope left. Haru’s story was he thought, going to be a big break, and to see his stolen work begin to be mentioned in the media, he wanted nothing to escape. And escape he did find. A mask that could let him escape reality, and enter another world, in a way. Just like his favorite stories and his daydreams. Haru has no idea how much longer he can keep the lie up to his family, but for now, this new mask could help him hide just a bit longer.
