[A Time Apart] (Current IC) What once was

Dylan let his eyes wander to the pages as they passed by. Yes, he was worried about the hunters that were no doubt trying to find their scent at that very moment; but he was more just curious about the actual content. He had a vague image of this new body in his head, but until he was able to find a mirror, he couldn't be sure.

The book has listed everyone's name who signed in, obviously, plus any distinguishing marks and descriptives about you all. Emily's hammer, Dylan's flamepiece, Grant's large shield are all noted.

Barbara and Jake don't have any descriptors, except Barbara has listed the massive injuries.

Carrying oversized weapons -- we might as well be waving signs that say, “Look at us, we’re Exalted!” Grant realizes wryly. No help for it, though.

“Come on, people, let’s go find our friends.”

Quickly jotting down "Ryuuka" and "He Who Walks Behind" in the book, Dylan hands it back to the guards and asks "Point us to this Rose?" in agreement.

Jake:

Rose starts wrapping bandages around Rose's most obvious wounds. "I gave you the easy way out, because I don't like seeing people in pain and was willing to let you buy me off. Now, I'm going to make sure she's at least somewhat comfortable, put her back in your arms, and put you onto the street."

She quickly finishes and opens the door.

The Rest:

Jennison leads you through the streets, and you arrive at a fairly large building with a medical sign on it, in time to see a woman opening the door, pointing out.

"Out, now." She says, her voice hard.

The guard looks confused at her, seeing Jake standing inside.

Ryuuka steps forwards, a little confused.

"I... um, hello?" she says, wanting to intercede but not really sure how. Obviously, something's gone wrong, but how to put it right?

Oh, no.

This situation just keeps getting worse and worse!

All right, Grant. You wrote this guy as Appearance 3, Charisma 4 -- two things you’re not. But now, you are him. So act like it! Get into character --

…The tall man in the front of the group bows to Rose Blossom, shifting his huge, leather-covered shield to do so. “I take it you’re the healer, madame? How is our friend?” His blue eyes are full of concern.

The woman casts an eye over the group. "None of you are hurt enough to stop me from actually going herb hunting now, and I refuse to work on someone when the person that brought them in refuses to tell me what caused the massive injuries." Rose looks at the guard, but doesn't say a word.

Jennison looks between Rose, Jake, the injured Barbara, and the group he brought here. "Uh.."

OK, Grant. Hear what she says, and think--how would he answer?

“I’m sorry if something he said angered you, ma’am. The truth is, we’re not entirely sure how it happened. I’d be glad to tell you what I can, though.

“I see you’ve already tended to Barbara’s hurts somewhat, despite your anger -- can we repay you by helping you gather herbs, or at least standing watch while you do? The guards at the gate said there’s bandits about.”

Dylan sighs. This is why he wanted a cover story. But he crossed his arms and stayed silent. His gaze, now turned on Grant seemed to say; "We were attacked by a demon." He wasn't too worried though. If she didn't believe him, it would simply fall to him to get Barbara back on her feet. He had given Ranan high intelligence and four dots in medicine. Either way, they would be fine.

The man pushes back the mail coif that covers his head and looks up at her. He is fair-haired, with good looks that seem blunt rather than finely drawn. Not an elegant sort of face, but it has a certain rough-edged charm.

“Well, we were camped out in a dry stream bed, early this morning -- and suddenly she just started to tear open and to bleed, as if an invisible something was attacking her. She screamed at us to flee, and then she lost consciousness. We’ve been kind of reluctant to tell the full story to anybody, because we knew how crazy it might sound. She does deal in magic though, so it might very well have been backlash from something she did.

“To tell you the truth, ma’am, that’s part of the reason we really hope she recovers, and soon -- it’s not just out of concern for a friend. She’s the only one that can tell us what happened…and if she riled up some power or other through her magic, she’s the only one that can tell us exactly who. I hope that doesn’t sound too cold-blooded.”

The pre-law student would have said as little of the truth as possible; the Dawn Caste soldier prefers to tell as much of it as possible. For some reason, people are often more willing to believe the truth when you’re not lying to them.

Rose pauses. "Seriously? I must be losing my own mind to believe that." She sighs, turning to Jake. "Put her back in the bed, since one of you is actually going to tell me the truth." She waves the group of you in. "I'll take a look at her, and we'll see how long it's going to take to even begin healing her. Come in."

Jennison coughs. "Umm, I thought you didn't know what happened?"

“I wasn’t lying,” the big man says, looking embarrassed all the same. “Walker was the one to pick her up when she fell and he’s been acting mightily agitated ever since. I just thought a simple, ‘We don’t know’ would be better than trying to tell the whole tale right then and there at the gate -- especially since it’s the truth. We don’t.”

That works too. Dylan's smugness immediately vanishes. He was glad that he hadn't said all of that.

"Like he said. All we were really able to tell was that it was some sort of magic. We didn't even get a chance to stop whatever it was."

If they couldn't get a story straight there was no point in Bria trying to do anything other than smooth things over. Following along still rather mouse like in the company of the others, she hurried in to look over Barbara as she was put back into a bed.

Does Bria think this healer knows her stuff from looking at things?

Per + Med = 5 dice

Jennison nods. "I'll be taking my leave of you all then. I have to get back to my post."

Rose ignores the guard as he leaves, and Bria is suitably impressed over the woman's demeanor and skill as she starts looking her over. "Like I said to him," she waves at Jake, "this is deeper than flesh and bone. Whatever the hell she did to herself, it's a wound reflected on her soul." She looks up. "It's going to be weeks before they even begin to fade."

Jake complied with Rose's demand, unhappy about the delay but glad that Barbara was finally getting the medical attention she desperately needed.

"There's got to be something we can do." Dylan says, cursing that there wasn't a charm that cures aggravated. "Some form of thaumaturgy, or prayer to a god or-" He stopped as something clicked in his mind.

She was bitten by a pattern spider. Which means she was poisoned. I can fix this.

"I can fix this." Dylan says softly with a look of realization; all too quickly replaced by determination in his eyes and voice. He rattles off a list of medical items he needs as he follows Bria into the other room, casting off his bag and coat, and rolling up his sleeves. "I can fix this."

Rose Blossom's face shows disbelief, then shock as the man takes over her infirmary. The first calls for supplies are common, but Dylan quickly moves into more esoteric requirements that she shakes her head at. "You can't get those here. Hells, I haven't even heard of some of those."

Knowledge comes to the mind of the Dylan, things that would work in place of the unobtainable, things that might actually be around in a town of this size.

As the Solar delves into her body with his tools and essence, he finds that no poison exists. Reaching deeper, he touches the deep parts of Barbara's soul, and reaching beyond that is the thread that ties her to the loom, darkened and twisted, hidden somehow from even the Loom. Here nine separate poisons float, active and actively being fed by something that is supremely ticked off at Barbara.

Sidereals page 209, she's got all the pattern bite effects minus Essence venom attached to her Thread.

Difficulty using Body-Purifying Admonitions is Difficulty 5, needing 11 total successes to remove one poison. You can spend five motes and banish it from the

patient’s system. Treating poison in this fashion is a dramatic Medicine-based action that takes 20 minutes unless sped by a stunt or Charm. You'll have to spend the five motes every interval.

Chameleon had set a bone or two before, but what Dylan is doing is far beyond her knowledge. She watches and tries to help Rose bring ingredients when they are called for. While she does this she carefully observes the healer, her attitude her manor, the slight adjustments in facial muscles that spell the difference between anxiety and fear, suspicion and concern. No doubt this woman was going to wonder why this man was suddenly so much more adept than she.. why a healer was even sought out.. Her reaction was of paramount interest to Bria now that it seemed Dylan could take care of Barbara.

"Also, if anyone wants to help then get over here." Dylan said, having watched enough television to know that having an assistant during a procedure usually helped. "I could use all the dice I can on this one!"

Dylan placed his hand on her stomach, closing his eyes and feeling the essence flowing through her. Deeper and deeper into her very being until- "There you are, you asshole." He felt the horrible black, not belonging in any living creature. This was bad. Among other things, it was blocking off her essence. The source of any exalted's powers. Fucking pattern spiders. The first task was drawing it up to a place he could actually effect it. His hand went to a piece of black jade, plucked from a high level manse. Using it and a bit of his own essence, the poison slowly rose into her bloodstream, causing her veins to turn jet black and making her look even worse off. Hard part done. Next came tools to influence her chakra. He could do plenty of work with his medical tools, but in cases like these, sometimes the body was necessary for the heavy lifting. By placing the right items on the right parts of her body at the right times, and a small, fresh cut on one of her still wounded areas, Dylan could actually direct the poison through her, out the cut, and into a waiting bowl. "Come on, Barb, work with me."

Alright, with 20 motes in my personal pool, I can make 4 of these rolls before I start glowing. But let's see what I get. Channeling my compassion to get a total pool of 12 dice.

Roll 1: 9 successes

Roll 2: 6 successes

Roll 3: 6 successes

Roll 4: 8 successes

Between those four rolls, you accumulated 13 successes. Congrats, she'll live!

:P
2 die stunt, 4m or 1wp.

"Dice?" Rose says quietly, even as she is already helping. The venom exists not in this world, and drawing into Barbara's body is most nerve wracking, for losing it now would mean that a venom meant for her spiritually strong soul would be left behind in her much weaker body. The venom is drawn away though, through blood and body, kept from settling inside organs.

As the venom drips out of her wound into the bowl, it hisses and spits at the touch of the air, evaporating almost as quickly as it leaves her body. Metaphysically sweeping Barbara's body, Dylan can feel the other venoms still buried deep into her, beyond the mortal touch. And beyond the poisons, he can feel the anger of something for what Dylan has done. But now at least, Barbara's Essence is no longer blocked from her.

“Well, what can you call this,” murmurs Grant, “but rolling the dice and hoping it works?”

Emily watches, agitated, not comfortable in a situation she has no real knowledge of, wracking her mind for any knowledge that might help.
