The Seven Kingdoms are in disarray. The Mad King has been killed and his children/family have been slaughtered, kidnapped, or have run off for their own safety. The next Monarch is to be crowned.. but who? Kingdoms begin to question if rulers should be crowned based solely on heritage, thus scrutinizing honor and tradition. Conflict between kingdoms certainly arise, and one House is even rumored to be protecting some of the Targaryen children. Not only is a war over the Iron Throne in the midst, but so is the threat of the North becoming independent from the Iron Throne.
Violence, poverty, politics, and drama run rampant in Westeros, but hiding amongst that is rare magic thought as myth, supernatural beings only in stories to scare children, and even the rise of dragons..?

What will you make of this mess? Do you contribute to peace or to violence? Are you fighting for the Iron Throne or your own independence? Do you search for merely love and family? Knowledge? Power?

REGARDING THE MAD KINGS DEATH:
It is not known what houses for sure led the plot, but many murmur about the scheming of the Lannisters, Tyrells, and the Baratheons. What is known is that the houses involved mustโ€™ve had plenty of influence (and perhaps a heavy purse of coin) to be able to infiltrate not only Dragonstone, but the Red Keep deep into the night.

The Mad King was discovered by a chambermaid in the middle of the night. Upon the discovery of his blood-soaked corpse, chaos ensued. Half of the staff remained loyal while the other half was in on the plot. Nobility and servants were slaughtered in the halls by knights and infiltrators alike.

That night, it was anarchy in Kings Landing. Anti-Targaryens and Pro-Targaryens fought in the streets and for claim on the throne. Lawlessness ran rampant and there was obviously no one to put a stop to this. Itโ€™d take the eventual arrival of the Lannisters to get things somewhat under control. Even then, tension is still brewing and not everyone is complying to the Lannisters โ€reignโ€.

Moskstraumen

To the North of Winterfell, nestled between the mountain range and the Bay of Ice, there lies a large town called Moskstraumen, whose inhabitants keep their ancestors' songs and stories close to heart and keep the traditions of ages long past. A weyrwood tree grows in the center of the town so that the townsfolk can pray to the old gods and honor them and their ancestors who now serve them. Boat-shaped houses sit above the shores and beaches, and it's winding road leads up the mountainside to a large mead hall, the namesake of this village. For it is on this ship that the townsfolk's ancestors sailed with the First Men, making Moskstraumen one of the oldest settlements on Westeros as of today.

Religion
The inhabitants of Moskstraumen worship the Old Gods, like the rest of the North, but they also honor the Ancestral Spirits, the departed souls of their ancestors, whom after death serve the Old Gods as spirits, guiding those who earn their favor with an invisible hand, or cursing those who stoke their fury. These spirits take the forms of animals:

The Bear: Large and Powerful, and capable of enduring the harshest winters. Represents Strength and Trials
The Hawk: flies gracefully, as one with the wind, then dives with ferocity. Represents Wind, Storms, and Vigor
The Moth: flutters silently through the night, its beauty shining in the darkness. Represents Beauty and Love
The Wolf: fierce and swift, loyal to the pack. Represents Loyalty and Courage
The Owl: Ever observant, ever watchful, ever learning. Represents Wisdom and Foresight
The Elk: Proud and strong, the elks watch over the land. Represents Duty and Vigilance.
The Serpent: The hidden spirit, slithering through and striking from the shadows. Represents Dying, the end of life.
The Whale: Crashing through even the mightiest tempest with ease. Represents Trade, Craftsmanship, and Honest Work.
The Fox: Clever and deceitful, the fox beguiles and persuades and tricks. Represents Cunning and Deceit
The Dragon: (Added after Aegon I Targaryen's Conquest) Soar down on wings with fiery roars, and lead to a new age. Represents Fate, Destruction, and Rebirth, for in the presence of dragons, all three are inevitable.

When a member of the community dies, they are built a funeral knarr, in which the body and all their most treasured possessions are laid. Afterward, the boat is set afire and cast out to drift in the waters of the sea. The spirit of the deceased takes a new form there, depending on their deeds and talents in life, and washes back up on the shores of the mainland, now an Ancestral Spirit. As a spirit, the deceased will guide their descendants through life. And when a great crisis emerges, and the Old Gods have need of strong warriors and cunning craftsmen, the spirit shall be called upon by the old gods to take up steel, and fight to protect their homeland.

Legends and History
Moskstraumen was founded by the First Men, specifically by Aethelsted Iron-Hand, who sailed with his people southeast to settle Westeros. However, along the way, they fell upon a great maelstrom, and all but one ship was destroyed. Aethelsted and his crewmen, soldiers, and civilians mourned their loss, but continued on toward the shores. However, navigating the Bay of Ice was a trecherous journey, and the ship wrecked on the coast. Upon inspecting the lands, Aethelsted considered this place to be the ideal spot to build their base of operations for their conquest. The people turned their boats into houses, and the longship they sailed on was hauled onto the top of the hill, where it remains to this day. Centuries would pass, and the Moskstraumen's people would, like the rest of the First Men, adopt the Old Gods, albeit with a slight twist from their own traditions. Their base grew into a village that continued to expand as their population grew, and even soon included a shipyard and dock.

When the Andals began to invade Westeros, rather than prepare a defense, the people of Moskstraumen took the initiative. Led by Knovgor the Shield Thrower, 200 shield-siblings gathered onto ships and met the Andals in glorious battle on the Shivering Sea. Among this war party was Frigga and Freyja, twins who spoke and fought as one, Olahn the Warsinger, a master of the string, be it lyre, harp, lute or bow, and Halfdar One-Eye, whose voice was the booming thunder. The Shivering Sea became a host to 20 days and nights of ceaseless battle before the Iceforged finally broke and fell back to the shore for one last stand with forces gathered there. They may not have stopped the Andals and their steel from invading Westeros, but these paltry 200 men and women destroyed a large portion of their forces and contributed to keeping the North free of their influence. Twice more, Moskstraumen rallied against the Andals to keep the kingdoms of the North safe, each time with the same vigor, courage and strength. Their third encounter was during the final battle between the North and the invading Andals, and this time, when they met on the western coast of the North, they drove the Andals back into the sea.

Tall tales such as these might be considered by some as "self-praising folklore from a backwater, backwards village", but the people of Moskstraumen know every tale, no matter how tall, holds a grain of truth. Their people are known to leave the village and travel the world in search of glory and fortune, some becoming sellswords, others sailors. But they always keep their culture close to them. They'll always worship the Old Gods, wear wode and animal furs and skins into battle to invoke the influence of their ancestors, and remember the tales and songs taught to them from the moment they were born.

Locales and Lifestyles
The people of Moskstraumen live their lives fulfilling a diversity of roles to keep their ancestors' home running. Fishermen go out to sea at dawn and return with their catches at dusk. Merchants set off on days- or weeks- long expeditions to sell goods from the village in the south or across the Narrow Sea if they're well-equipped. Refineries gather honey and ferment it to make mead. Hunters and trappers head into the mountains to catch game for furs and venison, or up north into the bay of ice to hunt whales and walruses for blubber and ivory. However, farmers are rare in Moskstraumen, as there is little land that is neither too sandy or too rocky to grow on. As a result, the village often imports crops from other lands during trade to make up the deficit or live off whatever is edible in the forests and mountain valleys. Freshwater springs ensure they never go thirsty.

Protecting these people are a militia corps called the Iceforged, men and women who are trained to fight on both land and sea, and to always keep between their enemies and their homeland. They make their home in the great mead hall overlooking the city, made from Aethelsted's flagship, the Moskstraumen, after which the town was named. These warriors patrol the town and nearby coasts for any sign of hostile forces. When they are spotted, they return home and sound the war horn. citizens are evacuated into the mountains, and those who choose to stay take up arms. Say what you will, but the people of Moskstraumen never shy away from a fight.

In battle, a warrior or volunteer wields whatever weapon they are most comfortable with. Be it the bow, a sword, an axe, or even an improvised pitchfork for a spear. They wear blue paint called wode in swirling silhouettes of the spirit animals, and wear furs of those animals to invoke their influence. They are divided into lots depending on talent, and then when they make contact with the enemy, they let out a collective roar, like a great hurricane to sweep the intruders away from their home. Fishermen hurl harpoons to spear enemies from a distance, a woodcutter's axe cuts through flesh and bone as easily as wood. A hunter's arrow finds a new mark, a pirate who just got onto the beach. Just like in peace, in battle, everyone who has a part to play plays it.

Some locales of Moskstraumen include:
-Taelvalla: a nearby valley filled with statuary and stone bas relief of the great heroes of the town's history.
-Skaal Academy: A college dedicated to training bards, or "skaal" as they are called in Moskstraumen.
-Golden Sea Meadery: A refinery where fine mead is made and honey gathered, either to be consumed here in the town or shipped out to other kingdoms by sea.
-Dock/Shipyard: Perhaps one of the busiest parts of Moskstraumen is the dock. Merchants and Fishermen come and go, and shipwrights work on creating yet another vessel for one of those roles, or perhaps for battle.
-Moskstraumen Mead Hall: The home of the Iceforged militia corps, where they train for battle and exchange fighting techniques among each other.
-Weyrwood Glade: A small glade of Weyrwood trees tucked away in the mountains and mesas. Weystones decorate the grounds around the trees, and this is considered Moskstraumen's sacred grounds.

-Monastery of the Owl: An academy high up in the mountains, run by the High Owl. Teachings here involve mathematics and engineering, alchemy, history and lore, and other such educational pursuits.

Cultural Touchstones
-Weystones: stone monoliths that are carved down into the shapes of spirit animals to connect the people with their ancestors. Here, residents pray to their ancestors for protection, guidance, and strength, and leave offerings.
-Shield-Siblings: A shield-sibling is a comrade-at-arms you trust and respect the most. For example, Broki refers to Rylen as his shield-brother.
-Wode: Wode is a blue paint (used by Celtic warriors in the real world) that fighters will wear to invoke the spirits of their ancestors in battle.

Festivals & Activities
Below are a number of activities, festivals, and holidays partaken in by the people of Moskstraumen:

-Reenactment of the Founding: A reenactment of the arrival of the first men from Aethelsted's perspective.
-Reenactment of the Battle of the Shivering Sea: A reenactment of Knovgor the Sheild Thrower and his 200 shield-siblings' battle against the Andals
-Winter and Summer solstices: Festivals where there is food, drink, singing, dancing, tournaments, games, and music throughout the day.
-Eve of the Ancestor Spirits: Eleven days in which townsfolk make pilgrimages to the Weystones to make offerings and honor the spirits of their ancestors, each of the first 10 days representing a different spirit animal, then a party is held on the 11th day to celebrate their feats and stories.
-Seasonal Fishing and Hunting Contests
