My story begins with a clock, a single damned clock that ruined and then saved my life. 7:24, seven twenty-four, the only number in existence that matters to me. 7:24 is the reason there’s a hammer in my hand and a hammer on my throat. 7:24 is the time I took my first breath, my second breath, and probably my last if the Unconquered Sun has any sense of humor, but let me go back to 7:24.
My parents were of the middle caste, my father, born at 3:28, was a government clerk, and my mother, 6:14, a baker. 7:24 meant I was going to be an artisan, and being born of middle caste parents, blacksmithing was my future. About 2 years into my apprenticeship I realized something, I hated iron, I hated smithing, and I hated the clock that gave me this damned hammer on my throat. I packed my belongings and set out for Chiaroscuro, never to be ruled by the time of day again. *laughs*
As you can imagine, a 16 year old girl arriving penniless in a city she knows nothing about wasn’t a pleasant experience. Thank the Unconquered Sun I was smart enough to bring a sword I’d fashioned during my apprenticeship. A madam named Glory took pity on me, and even let me sweep the floors when I told her I wouldn’t be anyone’s whore. After a year of cleaning up while being off limits, a couple of Glory’s regulars decided it was time to ‘break me in’. One evening while Glory was out they drug me by my hair and threw me into my bed. Not too many 17 year old girls sleep with a sword under their pillow, and I only wish I could remember their faces when I yanked it out.
When I came to what couldn’t have been 10 seconds later, my sword was glowing in my hand and there were three corpses at my feet. As I stepped out of my room, covered in blood, whores and clients screaming, I looked at the clock Glory kept on the wall, I’m sure you can guess the time.
I fled to Gem, set up shop, and have been selling only the finest jewelry to the noble houses, slowly working my way up and trying to get the ear of the despot. All the while I’ve been slowly recruiting mercenaries, bounty hunters, and anyone else that will join a cause for coin. Varang needs to learn that no one’s life should be ruled by something as simple as a clock.
Tall, lean, and well toned, 7:24 would be considered beautiful if she wasn’t so plain. Her only truly distinguishing mark is a hammer tattoo at the base of her throat. She keeps her straight black hair short and tied back while working the forge in the mornings.
After her mornings of being covered in soot and a leather apron, she takes a daily trip to the baths. In the afternoons she wears the finest silks, perfumes, and beads her hair in order to better sell her wares and rub elbows with the elite of Gem.
