A question of rules writing, post length, and courtesy.

Okay, so this may be a bit of a weird question that can be answered with some common sense, but I just wanted to get it out of the way. Hopefully none of this comes across as rude.

So I tend to write RP posts of ~500 words, and write character sheets of comparable detail. I've noticed that post length and such tends to vary heavily across RPN, but when I'm in or running an RP, I consider it a courtesy for people to match in effort what I've put out. Kinda sucks to type up a post of that length and only get something back one-tenth the length.

What I'm getting at is, would people consider it an affront for the rules of any RP I slop together to have semi-strict post length rules, or is that a common practice that people'd have no issues with here? I have had issues with this sorts of stuff on other sites in the past (i.e. people getting offended that I set a length minimum), and I just want to make sure what sort of environment to expect before proceeding.

Once again, hoping this doesn't seem rude/presumptuous. Thanks to anyone who cares to answer! :3

Post length is largely a matter for GMs/storytellers. RpN does not have or enforce rules regarding minimum or maximum lengths. Some people will probably be turned off if you set a minimum; others would be turned off if you set a maximum. It really all comes down to personal preference. I expect there are many RPs already that have something like that in their rules.

I have post length requirements on 90% of my role plays. I have had people get offended, yes. But role playing is about enjoying yourself. And if you need a post length requirement to enjoy yourself, then go ahead and put one in your rules. It's not any different from someone asking for a specific character in a fandom role play. Or someone wanting to role play in PM as opposed to a thread. Whatever makes you happy.

The short answer to your question is no. RPN has a wide variety of roleplays that cover a wide array of set-ups and role playing preferences. There is no set standard of creating roleplays that is enforced on this site.

So you can have a roleplay that has virtually no plot and only asks for about a line of text from it's participants. And you can have hosted projects that contain what would amount to a small book of world building and strict guidelines on character development / post length / reply schedules / etc.

And both are considered perfectly fine.

As @Kaerri said it's pretty much entirely up to the GM. I would say as long as your clear from the get go about what you do and don't expect no one is going to be offended. Or the people who will be offended are the same ones who would be mortally offended if you breathed at them in the wrong manner.

But for the average person having a posting requirements isn't really that big of a deal. Pretty much it's like the first thing I ask of any roleplay I even think about joining. Because I like to have clear rules set out in advance so I know exactly what I need to do to be a part of a roleplay.
