At sea:
- Is in command of everything happening on land and on sea
- Almost the captain’s equal
- Responsible for leading the boarding party when coming aboard another ship
- Delivers information to the captain
- Represents the interest of the crew
- Responsible for maintaining order and distributing food and other essentials
- Has the authority to punish minor offenses
- Takes over the role of a captain on a captured ship until it was disposed of
- In charge of the navigation and the sailing of the ship
- Directs the course and looks after the maps and navigation instruments
- Usually an older seaman
- Supervises the maintenance of the ship and its supply stores
- Responsible for inspecting the ship and its railings and rigging each morning, then reporting to the captain
- In charge of dock activity (weighing and dropping anchor, handling of the sails)
- Plans the day’s work and assigns tasks to the crew, then checks on completed work
- Has knowledge of all the knots, hitches, bends, whipping and slices
- In charge of a ship’s anchors, cordage, colors, boats and rigging while in dock
- Responsible for the ship’s guns and ammunition (sifting the gunpowder to keep it dry and prevent it from separating, insuring the cannons were kept free of rust and that all weapons were kept in good repair)

- The main rations were salt beef or pork, cheese, fish, ale and some form of ship's biscuit. The quality of the food deteriorated because of storage problems, lack of ventilation, and poor drainage.
