This takes place several years before the events of the first book/first episode, so no need to worry about being knowing the books/show. This takes place in the year 292 AC, 7 years before the War of Five Kings. It begins in the Riverlands, on the Kingsroad, with two hedge knights and a squire. As they journey north, others may join them in search of adventure, gold, or glory.

There are 9 regions south of the Wall in the continent of Westeros, which were 7 kingdoms before the first Targaryen king joined them into one kingdom under the Iron Throne.

The North is a harsh, cold land where the majority religion is the Old Gods faith. There is only one harbor, under the control of Lord Manderly. The current Lord Paramount of the North is Eddard Stark. Eddard Stark, as the closest friend of Robert Baratheon, joined Robert in his rebellion against Aerys Targaryen.

North of "The North" is the Wall. The Night's Watch, a group of men who vow to spend their lives guarding the realm from anything beyond the wall, have stood guard against any enemy of the realm for nearly eight thousand years. If a member of the Night's Watch abandons his post, his life is forfeit. The Night's Watch takes no sides during a conflict of the Seven Kingdoms.

Beyond the Wall are the Freefolk, wildlings who serve no king.

South of the North are the Riverlands, a place covered in rivers and plains, where Lord Paramount Hoster Tully rules. Other than the Blackwood family, the lords of the Riverland choose to follow the Faith of the Seven instead of the Old Gods. Hoster Tully chose to join Robert in his rebellion against King Aerys Targaryen.

To the east of the Riverlands is the mountainous Vale of Arryn, ruled by Lord Paramount Jon Arryn. The majority religion here is the Faith of the Seven. Jon Arryn backed Robert during Robert's Rebellion.

To the west of the Riverlands are the Iron Isles, islands that are ruled by Lord Paramount Balon Greyjoy. As Balon recently led a rebellion against King Robert Baratheon, he lost two of his sons to the war and the youngest he had to give up to Eddard Stark to be raised by him instead, as a hostage. Being a follower of the Drowned God, Balon's people launch numerous coastal raids against the North, the Westerlands, and the Reach. Balon Greyjoy was neutral during Robert's Rebellion.

South of the Iron Isles are Westerlands, rich in gold mines and followers of the Faith of the Seven, they are ruled by Lord Paramount Tywin Lannister. His daughter Cersei Lannister is the Queen of the Iron Throne, and his son Jaime Lannister, the Kingslayer, is the guard of Cersei's husband, King Robert. Tywin also has a dwarf son named Tyrion. Tywin remained neutral for most of Robert's Rebellion, until he sacked King's Landing as the rebellion ended.

Further south of the Westerlands are the fertile lands of the Reach. The Reach is rich in food and houses Oldtown, the home of the maesters (learned people) and the septons of the Faith of the Seven. It is currently ruled by Mace Tyrell, who backed King Aerys Targaryen in Robert's Rebellion.

The most south is the peninsula of Dorne, a desert where things are much different than the rest of the seven kingdoms. In Dorne, the Faith of the Seven is followed by most, women inherit on the same grounds as men do, and Dorne was the last of the seven kingdoms to serve under the Iron Throne. Dorne is currently ruled by Doran Martell, whose sister Elia Martell was the wife of Rhaegar Targaryen, the son and heir of King Aerys Targaryen, both of whom perished in the rebellion. Doran Martell has a longstanding hatred of the Lannisters and served King Aerys in Robert's Rebellion.

The Stormlands, north of Dorne and east of the Reach, are a militaristic region ruled by Renly Baratheon, younger brother of King Robert, who was given the region after Robert ascended the Iron Throne. The Stormlanders follow the Faith of the Seven. During his rebellion, Robert ruled the Stormlands.

And finally, the region directly under the King on the Iron Throne is known as "the Crownlands". The Crownlands are ruled by King Robert Baratheon, who controls every region from the North to Dorne. The Crownlanders are followers of the Faith of the Seven.

To the West of the continent of Westeros is the continent of Essos, a landmass filled with strange and foreign cultures and kingdoms.
