Other A Dump For Stuff and Things

'Science.' he turned the word over in his mind, 'This isn't for me, it's for science, it's for mankind, I am doing this because I want to further mankind.' He thought, not sure anymore just who it was he was convincing, glancing over his shoulder at the rough group of intellectuals he was trailing up the mountain of rubble before looking forward once more. 'I remember when this was all so beautiful, intricate archways and handcrafted steps, all built of stone so odd and otherworldly... The sky seemed bluer, the sea seemed bluer... His eyes were clearer then.' He shook the thought from his mind, a jolt reminding him to keep moving, accompanied by gruff mumblings from the lot behind him.
He looked skywards in search of refuge from his internal conflict but was met only with dark clouds, forming spiral above his head in confusion, while those around only complained of head and harsh sunlight.
He nearly tripped over the sudden steps, so pristine and polished, as if each day had failed to touch them. Luscious vines and vibrant flowers muddied the once organized structure, truly still collected despite them, give for a few missing specimen, heaven knows where they'd gone.
The toad still croaked and creaked, and the fish still gurgled and swam, all was alive and full of color, so free and lively were they that he nearly forgot the steel bars just before him.
Eyes adjusting to the dark inside the stone and metal prison, he could see the mess of tick marks, scrapes, and dried bloody paw prints, out of place beside the silhouette of a humans.
He sighed deeply, a short glance back and a word, it's meaning lost to the days. A shadow within morphed and pulsed with an unsettling rhythm.
A white paw motioned out into the sun.
The paw was followed by a long snout and a pair of dim blue eyes, squinting against the harsh sun, cracking and popping joints bringing release to the creature's gaze, a shake of the neck, a fruitless effort to relieve it's skin from the grime of a decade... More.
He scratched the creature's chin, watching its lips turn in a canine grin, 'Hey...' He spoke gently, moving his hand to rub it's filthy white cheek, grinning faintly as it's eyes lit up and it's tongue lolled carelessly from its maw, ripe with pearly daggers.
'It's been a while, hasn't it?' The animal made a noise mimicking speech and it's ears fell to it's temples, 'I missed you.' The animal's matted tail swished lazily, and it's neck turned to allow a collar around it's neck, ignoring the clumsy men clambering over the chamber walls, knocking the door free just slightly, with a brightly chiming creak. The free animals scattered, the man still smiled warmly, fastening a strange rectangular object onto an open space on the collar.
It beeped in acknowledgement.
The beast's pupils shrank into the depths of its eyes, growing cold, it's claws scraping the stone floor as it span to the men, who immediately attempted to flee, but made it only seconds in the white beast's arena. It nosed it's way through the door, eyes darting and landing on the man, glaring at him, betrayal in his gaze where warmth once sat, before lunging, scarring him on the throat, leaping down the crumbled steps into the billowing fog in the man's mind.
The man, choking back pain, struck his heels against the earth as he tore after the beast without looking back, down the stones across the sea and into the forest before collapsing to the earth, wheezing and choking for air. A hard thump nearly knocked his eyes from their sockets, and knocked his mind from reality.

The musty smell of a damp cave, eroded minerals, wet moss and soil filled his lungs, it was the freshest smell he'd experience in years, and his beastly blue eyes were alight with their comforts. He dunked his tattered shirt into the stream at the entrance, scrubbing at the filth trapped in his hair, wincing at the sheer chill of the water, shivering at the sheer excitement of it. A rustling behind him reminded him, he had company.
He wet the shirt again and moved on toes and knuckles to the unconscious man on the floor of the cave, abruptly slapping the shirt onto his face and sending him sputtering awake. The man sat up slightly only to find himself face to face with the man he had sentenced to hell fifteen years ago, falling back onto his elbows and staring at the sad look on his face.
'Why...' The scruffy man's ragged tone came out as a whisper, 'Why would you trap me in that cage for those ten long years, alone...' The frightened man began to speak, and was cut off by the other's gravelly voice, 'Don't you dare say you didn't know...'
'I was terrified.' The man managed, not much force left as he shuddered under the other man's stare. 'I...' He swallowed hard, 'I chose the certainty of science over the risk of death.'
The other man shook his head and sighed, 'You chose facing death alone over facing death together.' He threw a small, metallic object across the floor and turned, heading out as his silhouette slowly morphed and then faded, forgotten, into the mist.
The man looked at the object, and the mangled prints heading towards the exit.
And he wept.

Forever Fall

Like the bright star of morning, you bring light to my world, awakening in me happiness and wonder, and a creativity I thought had died long ago.
It the wake of your glow, my doubts burn asunder, and the thunder in my mind quells to a rolling boil, and the sweet fragrance of the world floods in, poured into my heart-shaped glass, not a single hole unfilled.
Looking in your eyes, I see they've reflected the burning passion of my own, and for a moment I forget that I am a fool to think I could bring such radiance into your life as well.
It only lasts a moment but I can already feel the distance, and that light dims, and the world grows cold, and my glass quakes to the ceaseless thumping that I've been plagued with since we met.
I know your glittering gaze, your soft smile, your quiet laughter, is hollow.
For in reality you will never be my sun, you'll always be the oak on the mountain, always too far over the horizon, unmoving, withered, lifeless, greying and decaying with every storm that befalls you.
I'll always know, deep down, that I can never hope to understand or ever hope to try and move you without hurting you at your roots.
