Ryuuto Munakata

It was all too sudden.

His obnoxious laughter, witty comebacks, ear to ear grins, mature advices, in one snap, it was all gone. Ryuuto's bestfriend, Hiroshi Tamotsu, was gone and as the one who was left behind, Ryuuto bore the weight of Hiroshi's loss in his shoulders. In this case, Ryuuto lost count of the times he caught himself spacing out in front of the deceased's casket, lost track of the time he spent while unconsciously reminiscing their most unforgettable moments, lost count of the times he greatly drowned himself with regrets, and lost count of the times he spent visiting his bestfriend's last resting place for the past three days.

Now, Ryuuto found himself standing yet again before Hiroshi Tamotsu, for a different reason, bringing nothing but a single, miniature notebook instead of the usual sticky dangos that the latter adored. In the amidst of the deafening silence, Ryuuto finally spoke to Hiroshi for the first time ever since his first visit.

"I still won't accept this, Hiro, you idiot." Ryuuto paused before glaring at the tombstone, "But then again, you'd always stubbornly get everything your way." As he flipped through the pages of the small notebook, he continued, "For example, you're giving me this bucket list because you have a hidden motive, don't you!?" At this, Ryuuto was already shouting, gaining the attention of a few visitors in the cementery. "And since I'm a bigger idiot than you, I'm going to complete this bucket list of yours, just you wait!" With a small smile, Ryuuto left the cementery, heading to the finish the first thing on the list.

「Meet Kaori Yoshida in the hospital. 」

Kaori Yoshida

Kaori waved goodbye to her mother from the hospital bed a smile on her face. As the door closed behind them she finally relaxed into her bed, natural smile still on her face. Three days. Three days since she was given a future.

She remembered waking up three days ago, her mind a mess of jumbled nothings. The feeling was familiar to her, and it often came after surgery. She didn’t know how long she was in that state, but finally the haze cleared slightly, and she saw her father’s smiling face. It was scraggy and unkempt, and he had bags under his eyes. But his smile, she would never forget. She had to wonder, why was he so happy? What could be so wonderful? She wanted to know, wanted to smile just like that.

~Thump~Thump~Thump~

She could hear the strong beating of a heart. Who’s was that? Underneath the covers her hand went to her chest.

~Thump~Thump~Thump~

And just like that she knew. She was alive. She wondered if her smile looked just like her Father’s.

That was three days ago. Her mother had arrived shortly after that, and with Kaori more coherent, a teary reunion was had. They had been hesitant to leave her side, but she would be recovering for a while yet, and they still had to work.

With her family gone she turned her attention to the letter on her bedside table. The doctor had said it was written by her mysterious donor. The man to whom she owed everything. Her classmate, Hiroshi Tamotsu.

It was strange to know that beating in her chest was the heart of a boy-no a man who she barely knew. She wished to attend his funeral, it was the least she could do. But in her state, leaving the bed was impossible. She resolved to visit his grave as soon as possible and pay her respects.

Even after three days her hands were still shaky, but she still managed to open the letter without trouble. It was his last request, a bucket list of a sort, one which she intend to complete. She had been given a second chance, and she wouldn’t let it go to waste. She would live her life to the fullest, starting with item one on Hiroshi’s list;

「Meet Ryuuto Munakata. He’ll come to you.」

She put the letter back down on the table and settled in to the bed for a nap. If Hiroshi said Ryuuto would show, then he would, simple as that. All she had to do was wait.

Ryuuto Munakata

It has been more than ten minutes since Ryuuto had arrived in the local hospital of the town. Despite him abruptly announcing that he was going to finish Hiroshi's entire bucket list, Ryuuto actually had no idea where to start and finding the said person, Kaori Yoshida, in the vast space in the hospital, was no exception. Trying to approach the staff was nearly impossible, since most of them were fidgety and unaccommodating. Though, he can't really blame them, it was currently rush hour, after all.

What will he do now?

Looking around once more, he reached to a conclusion and decided to visit later when it was not busy. However, as soon as that idea came up to his mind, images of Hiroshi's pleading face would flash in his mind. Scratching the back of his head, Ryuuto let out a helpless sigh,
"Guess I got no choice, then." He mumbled and decided to look for the room by himself.

From the first floor, second floor, third floor, Ryuuto searched the whole building, however, not once did Kaori Yoshida's name appear in one of the room's nameplates.
"That's odd." Ryuuto grumbled as he reached the far end of the third floor.

If that girl wasn't here, then, where is she?

In a matter of seconds, Ryuuto immediately found the answer to his questions when he faced the wall just by the stairs. There, a gigantic layout of the entire hospital can be seen.
"You're kidding!" He smacked his forehead when he read that the bedridden patients where situated on the other building. Considering that she just received her heart, that Kaori was still probably recovering and therefore, can't leave her bed. At once, Ryuuto immediately went back to the ground floor and off to the other building. Seeing as the staff weren't as busy as half an hour ago, he figured to approach them and ask for help. That was until he suddenly heard his name.

"Ryuuto? What are you doing here?" A familiar voice spoke.

The boy turned around to face the source of the voice, only to see a familiar redhead woman who carried a bunch of small boxes standing before him.
"Eiko, huh? Nothing, just here to see a....friend." Ryuuto said, averting his gaze from the elder sibling.

"How suspicious." Eiko cocked an eyebrow, while a small, mischievous smirk formed on her face. "It's a girl, isn't it?"

Immediately, Ryuuto turned beet red,
"N-Nah, she's jus an ol' friend." Realizing that his way of talking had changed, Ryuuto quickly looked over to his sister, who did not seem to be amused. "You're visiting a girl, yet, you didn't even bring anything?! And you call yourself a man." Grumbling, Eiko handed Ryuuto a box of what seemed to be food. "Now, go. Don't worry, that's on me."

With a small grunt, Ryuuto accepted the box and asked for Kaori's room number in the reception, then waltzed off to find her room. Now, as he stood in front of the door in complete silence, Ryuuto held out his free hand and gave the door a small knock.

Kaori Yoshida

She had slept for around two hours before waking, yawning softly as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes. The curtains were drawn back and the midmorning light shone through. She spent sometime staring out the window, thinking about everything and nothing. It was a gorgeous day, small birds flitted in and out of view and the sun shone high in the sky. It was taunting really, on such a wonderful day here she was confined to a bed unable to do much of anything.

She looked away from the window to the disconnected heart monitor, it was a strange change. Her past few weeks in the hospital she had heard constant feed back from the machine, but now it was silent.

Unconsciously her hand went to her chest.

~Thump~Thump~Thump~

She could feel a strong pulse, beating over and over.

Kaori said yet another small prayer for her savior’s soul, before turning her attention to the stack of papers her mother had left at her bedside table. On the top of the stack was a sticky note which read, ‘I know you must be board. Pass the time editing these K? :) -Mom’

She sighed with good natured exasperation, shaking her head at her mothers antics. She didn’t mind really, in fact she enjoyed editing for her mother’s manga. She grabbed the stack of papers and her glasses off the table as well as a conveniently placed pen. Hisa’s hand writing was chicken scratch on a good day, but Kaori had read it often enough that she was able to decipher it with a little effort.

“Jeez mom, your spelling…” She sighed slightly as she corrected yet another error. Kaori could practically see her mother sticking her tongue out at her unapologetically. The woman was a real handful sometimes but Kaori wouldn’t have anyone else for a mother. Both her parents had been extremely supportive her entire life, and honestly she didn’t think she would ever be able to repay everything they had done for her. Her heart condition wasn’t exactly cheap, and both her mother and father had made many sacrifices so she could get the treatment she needed.

It was as she finished the editing and was double checking her work that she heard a knock at her door.

A quick glance at the clock told her that while it was close to lunchtime, the nurses wouldn’t be arriving with food for another hour at best. Her mother and father had just left two hours earlier so it probably wasn’t them. The only other person she was expecting at this point was… Ryuuto, the man Hiroshi said would come.

“It’s open.” Kaori called a small and curious smile on her face, as she returned all the papers to a neat pile on her lap.

It was time to meet Ryuuto.

Ryuuto Munakata

For a while, Ryuuto stood in silence. In his entire life, he had never felt that nervous enough to actually think about jumping off from the window. Adding the excruciating suspense while waiting for the girl's call before entering the room, Ryuuto was close to numbness. However, despite what he was currently experiencing as of the moment, the boy's exterior appearance remained the same; he still had that glare and scowl on his face. In fact, he was even emitting a dark aura that was scaring off the passersby.

Maybe I should pull back for now, take a quick break and return. It won't hurt to do that, right? Yeah, that's good.

However, before he can even take a step, a certain voice intercepted from inside the room, rendering his plan useless. At this, Ryuuto was uncontrollably shaking, nervousness was flowing through his veins, but there was also determination to finish his beloved friend's last memento. Now that the girl had given her the signal, there was no going back. With a deep breath, Ryuuto clenched the doorknob and slid the door open.

The first one to welcome him was a ray of blinding light from the room's window. Once his eyes had finally adjusted to the light, his gaze shifted around the room. The room looked quite accommodating and clean that not even one speck of dirt can be found. Even the papers were neatly piled up in a single file, placed on the lap of a certain bedridden girl.

Girl?

At this, Ryuuto's eyes traced upwards to that certain girl. Jet black hair, frail looking body, and gray eyes, the girl was probably Kaori Yoshida, the girl who has Hiroshi's heart. Realizing that he was shamelessly staring at the girl, Ryuuto pulled back awkwardly. Closing his eyes for a moment, the boy calmed himself down and decided that he should introduce himself at the moment.

"N-Nice to meet you, Yoshida-san. Well, I guess you'd probably know me from Hiro's bucket list. But, yeah, my name is Ryuuto Munakata." The male spoke while sheepishly rubbing the back of his head.

Well at least, that's one thing off the list.

Kaori Yoshida

The door to her room swung open and Kaori caught her first glimpse of her visitor. He was a fairly average height for a boy their age. He sported chin length maroon hair which reminded her of her own mothers, though Hisa’s was much lighter leaning more to a orange then a deep red like his own. The visitor’s eyes were also red, though a different shade which stood out from his hair, the effect was intimidating in a way. He seemed to exude an air of irritation as though he were on edge and one wrong step would set him off.

He stepped into the room carrying a small box, though what it contained she had no idea. He looked her over with an intense gaze, and she soon began to fidget. It wasn’t the first time she had been scrutinized from a hospital bed, but she didn’t think she would ever become used to the feeling.

In an instant his irritation and intense gaze vanished, as he appeared to realize he was being rude. The red head stepped back slightly and closed his eyes, seeming a bit embarrassed. He took a moment to compose himself then looked back up at her, stuttering slightly as he spoke, “N-Nice to meet you, Yoshida-san. Well, I guess you’d probably know me from Hiro’s bucket list. But, yeah, my name is Ryuuto Munakata.” Kaori felt a smile bloom on her face, he had come, just as Hiroshi said he would.

Kaori bowed her head slightly, “I’m Kaori Yoshida its good to finally meet you Munakata-san. Tamotsu-san said you would come in his letter… so I was expecting you.” She smiled happily at him, “You’re just in time, I was starting to get lonely.” Kaori gestured to the visitors chair at her side while she placed the edited papers back on the small desk. She readjusted herself on the bed, waiting patiently for him to take a seat.

As the girl motioned, Ryuuto took a seat on one of the visitor's chair. Looking how carefreely Kaori had smiled while introducing herself to him, somehow, made him release his tension and calm down while putting the box on his lap. Now that he looked at it, Ryuuto just noticed that the food Eiko had bought was cake. Was she allowed to eat something as sweet as this? At any case, Ryuuto figured that he should still probably give it to her.
"..By the way, I brought some food. You can have some if you'd like." He said, setting the box by the small desk.

Glancing over, his eyes shifted to the pile of papers just beside the box of cake.
"....Manga?" The boy unconsciously muttered when he looked closely at the papers. Even if he had only read one page, Ryuuto found himself admiring it. "Ah. I'm sorry for reading it!" Realizing that he was oggling over the paper, Ryuuto exclaimed and waved uncontrollably. Though, he can't help but want to read it some more, since he is a slight bookworm, after all. Nevertheless, Ryuuto thought that it was best if he could commend the manga, but somehow, he just couldn't find the words, rather, Ryuuto was too embarrassed to do so.

"...Well, don't worry, it was so-so."

His misleading mouth did the talking for him, instead.

Kaori Yoshida

Ryuuto took the seat she offered, and almost immediately seemed to relax. Seeming to take a moment to himself, he glanced down at the box, eyebrow raised in curiosity.

Kaori craned her neck a bit trying to get a better look at the box. There was an emblem on the top, was that…cake? Ryuuto looked between her and the box, expression unsure. After a few moments of this he seemed to come to a decision, placing the box on her side table, “..By the way, I brought some food. You can have some if you’d like.”

Before Kaori could respond her mother’s manga seemed to catch the boy’s eye. His eyes ran over the first page, and she almost expected him to continue through the whole thing. He managed to pull himself away however, once again realizing he was being rude he waved his hands wildly in embarrassment, “Ah. Im sorry for reading it!”

Kaori stifled a giggle with the back of her hand, the red-head seemed to be easily flustered, or maybe he was still uncomfortable with her. “Its alright, I don’t mind really. I was just editing it for my Okaasan.”

Ryuuto seemed to want to say something, but was struggling for words, his mouth opened uselessly once or twice, but finally he managed to spit something out, “…Well, don’t worry, it was so-so.”

She furrowed her brow slightly in confusion, ‘so-so? Well to each their own’ She smiled once more at him, “Oh? I thought it was pretty good, but it is still in the drafting stages…”

Her mind began to drift as she thought back to all her mother’s other drafting stage works. Most were interesting in concept, but translated horribly to paper and had to be scrapped. In many ways it made her sad that some of her mother’s work would never move past that such an early stage. “Poor Miko-chan…” she muttered, almost sadly, to herself, lost in some distant recollection of a past character or story.

Then as if snapping out of a trance she blinked a few times and shook her head, face flushing red in embarrassment as she fiddled with her fingers, “Sorry about that, I space out like that sometimes… Well at least were both embarrassed now right?” She finished with a light laugh and a smile.

Ryuuto Munakata

As soon as those words were immediately spurted from his mouth, Ryuuto mentally started cringing in his head. It was clear that the male greatly regretted his actions, yet, the expression in his face seemed to give out a different meaning to the girl. Though, it was no wonder that she would think he was embarrassed, since his face was as red as a tomato. His eyes shifted to the stack of papers once again when he heard that the manga was made by Kaori's mother, making him a bit disappointed, since he was really convinced that Kaori had made it herself.

However, disappointment wasn't all that he felt. There was a tinge of guilt, which instantly grew once he saw Kaori smile while giving her response and spacing out afterwards. He had to make it up to her somehow. As Ryuuto opened his mouth to say something, the girl had spoke when she snapped out from the thoughts.

"Wha-?!" The male was about to protest rashly like he always did, but caught and halted himself. "I-I'm not embarrassed, just so you know." Ryuuto muttered with a slight pout, before realizing that he just got distracted by Kaori's statement. He was supposed to find a way on how to apologize for his rudeness and make it up to the girl.

In amidst of all of that, Ryuuto grabbed the small notebook from his pocket and propped it open. He figured that he could find some ideas in Hiroshi's imaginative bucket list. Before turning a page, he crossed the first task, since he had already accomplished it and met Kaori Yoshida. Unintentionally, his eyes turned to the second task on the first page.

「Sing loudly together on the roof.」

It made Ryuuto want to kill Hiroshi Tamotsu.

Kaori Yoshida

“Wha-?! I-I’m not embarrassed just so you know.”
The red-head muttered pouting childishly. Kaori laughed lightly, “Right, my mistake.” There was a brief silence as Ryuuto sulked a bit longer, perhaps trying to think of something to say. His hands went into his coat pocket to retrieve a small book. He scratched off the first few words at the top then his eyes moved down the list. Red iris’ widened, then filled with a focused rage.

Normally Kaori wouldn’t pry into others business, but her curiosity got the better of her and she leaned slightly over the bed, the top of her head almost brushing Ryuuto’s as she tried to see what had him so worked up. It was hard to read upside down and her glasses kept sliding down her nose, causing her to hold them in place with both hands so she could actually make the text out.

「Sing loudly together on the roof.」

It was the bucket list then. Kaori smiled. She seemed to be doing that a lot lately.

“Ah Munakata-san, pardon the intrusion.” She once again fiddled with her fingers in embarrassment, “I got curious, and well… A-Anyway, thats a bucket list from Tamotsu-san right? Did you want to start on yours right away? The doctor said I could leave the room today so long as someone was with me…” She cast a glance over to the folded wheel chair in the corner of the room. It wouldn’t be her first time in one, and she didn’t mind it really, but still she wished she could walk on her own already. She was still recovering however, and didn’t want to do anything to risk her second chance, or prolong her stay.

“…I don’t know how good I am at singing…but lets do our best!”

Her eyes gained a determined sparkle, though her face became red once again mere moments later, “T-Though you’ll have to help me into the wheelchair at least…”

Gritting his teeth, the male clutched onto the miniature notebook in his hands. He can't bear to imagine himself singing, much more, singing with a girl whom he just met today. Plus, they were in a hospital, for heaven's sake. For the maroon-haired man, this kind of thing is impossible! With a small sigh, Ryuuto decided to just leave it be, at least until Kaori notices it.

However, it didn't take long before it happened.

As the male was about to retreat his notebook, Ryuuto felt a slight touch on his head. His eyes curiously shifted towards the source and found himself startled when he saw Kaori almost a couple of inches away from him. The boy remained frozen in shock while the redness of his face gradually increased. However, once he heard Kaori's remark about the task at hand, Ryuuto was immediately pulled back to reality.

Naturally, his response was a protest.
"E-Eh? Are you sure about that?!"

Then, it occurred to him, that the fact that he seemed to be only one who was embarrassed about this whole thing made Ryuuto more flustered about it than he can ever imagine. Thus, this left him no choice but to comply with her. Besides, they were going to come across this task later or sooner, after all. There was no choice but to do this. How hard can it be? The male gave a nervous laugh in the inside while trying to stay calm and convince himself that everything's going to be fine.

Just then, Ryuuto wondered why Kaori's face had become red. However, once he heard the reason for that, Ryuuto became as flustered as her. Panicking, the male pondered on how he should carry her up to the roof. It wasn't then that he realized that she said the word, 'wheelchair', making him as red as his hair. Putting those thoughts to the back of his head, Ryuuto walked off to the wheelchair and opened it, before crouching down beside the bed, offering his back to the girl with his hands ready to give assistance.

"G-Got it. I'll give you a piggyback, then." He muttered.

Kaori Yoshida

Kaori watched as Ryuuto’s face turned the same color as his hair. At least she wasn’t the only one embarrassed. His eyes moved erratically, like a cornered animal looking for escape. Then his jaw set in a firm line and he walked over to the wheelchair and brought it closer to her bed. Still blushing furiously he bent down with his back to her, “G-Got it. I’ll give you a piggy back, then.”

If they were competing for the strongest blush, it would be rather hard to determine the winner.

“T-T-thanks.” She managed to mumble.

Kaori began to gingerly extract herself from the covers. Having just recently recovered from surgery, Kaori didn’t have a lot of stamina. Her limbs were heavy from being underused for so long, and she could feel her breathing deepen slightly, but still, somehow, she made her way over to the edge of the bed despite how much energy it required for her to do so. She reached fragile, arms up around Ryuuto’s neck then dragged the rest of her body to lay against his back.

This was such an odd situation. Here she was, pressed snuggly against the back of a complete stranger, someone she had only just met. Maybe it was because of Hiroshi, maybe it was because they both sought to carry out his last wishes, but for some reason Kaori felt she could trust the redhead.

“I-I’m ready.” She said after wiggling into a more comfortable position, then buried her face into his back in embarrassment.

Despite her red face however a smile rested on her lips. It seemed she would get to go outside today after all.

Ryuuto Munakata

For a while, the male remained stiffly crouched down, with a knee glued to the floor and the other one upright. Uneasily, Ryuuto waited for the girl to climb onto his back, his gaze stuck on the door as if he can bore a hole with his glare. It was easy to tell that the tension was killing the male inside on how often he anxiously turned his head to the back and check if the girl was doing fine. On some part, Ryuuto was on the verge of standing up and assisting her, but seeing how she was close to the edge of the bed made him root for her instead.

Relief washed over him once she made contact with his back, since she was able to reach him safely. Nevertheless, despite that, the reddish shade never left his face. Ryuuto remained still for a few seconds, letting Kaori adjust in her place. Though, he had never expected her to wrap her arms around neck, taking him completely off guard. Once Ryuuto felt that Kaori was completely still, he asked,
"Y-You okay back there? I'm going to stand up now, okay?" As a reply, Ryuuto heard her agree and felt her bury her face, as well.

The male slowly stood up while carefully holding the girl in the back. He walked leisurely towards the wheelchair.
"I'm going to put you down, okay?" Cautiously, Ryuuto crouched down a bit and gently placed the girl on the wheelchair.

"Alright, we're all set. Do you want to bring anything with you? Oh, do you want water?"

Unconsciously, a small smile formed on his lips. Despite being emotionally drained with being flustered, Ryuuto somehow felt fulfilled with assisting Kaori.

Now safely in the wheel chair Kaori took a few moments to become comfortable. She was excited, finally she would leave her hospital bed, these past few days had felt like an eternity. It wasn’t complete freedom but it was freedom none the less.

“Alright, we’re all set. Do you want to bring anything with you? Oh, do you want water?”

She was startled out of her thoughts when Ryuuto spoke, and looked up to see him smiling at her. She smiled back gratefully, “No I’m alright thanks.”

As Ryuuto walked around behind the wheelchair, Kaori once again drifted into the cosmos.

‘I wonder what song we’ll sing? Something happy maybe? Or perhaps something more somber to honor Tamotsu-san? It’d probably be best to ask Ryuuto…’

She had been in wheelchairs many times throughout her life, the motion as they rolled down the hall, was familiar, comforting even. Perhaps that was why it was so easy for her to become lost in thought. Or maybe she was just a space cadet.

Somehow she managed to pull herself out of thought, “Ah, Munakata-san, what should we sing once we get to the roof?” Once again she realized how odd this whole situation was, and how much stranger it kept becoming. Ryuuto, a complete stranger, was going to the roof with her to sing at the top of his lungs.

But that was just it wasn’t it? He really was a stranger, someone here spending time with her, weather it be out of the goodness of his heart, or his loyalty to a friend, he was here.

“Munakata-san…” she began her tone one of completely sincerity, she looked over her shoulder to meet his eyes. “Thank you so much. Even if you aren’t doing this for me, it still means a lot.”

Ryuuto Munakata

"Are you sure you don't want to bring anything?"

The male anxiously replied, worried about Kaori's welfare. After all, he'll be the one who'll take her outside for the first time. Maybe that was a bit exaggerated, but still, Ryuuto can't help but fret over it. Nevertheless, the maroon haired man obediently complied to the girl and walked behind the wheelchair, pushing it out of the room and into the hall. Along the way, Ryuuto noticed several other patients in different rooms with various expressions on their faces, much more than a normal person could have. Some were grinning from ear to ear, others were peacefully lying down, while some were bawling their eyes out.

Was there a time where Yoshida-san had an expression like that, as well?

Just then, Kaori spoke, taking Ryuuto completely off surprise. It wasn't often that he spaced out, after all. After her question had a sunk in his mind, Ryuuto realized that they haven't agree on a song, yet.
"....To be frank, I absolutely have no idea." The male sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck. Ryuuto thought about it deeply and reached to a conclusion that she'll let her decide.

However, when Kaori spoke, it wasn't his expected reply about the song, but something else.

Once again, Ryuuto began to get flustered, especially with the fact that she met his eyes and sounded so sincere. Nevertheless, he finally got his answer from his question earlier. Whatever her expression was in the past, the fact that she's smiling in the present is now enough. However, embarrassment washed over him that he forgot about his thoughts earlier. Not knowing how to respond, his eyes frantically shifted all over the place,
"O-Oh, look. De elevator's over der. Tis probably best if we get on now." He stiffly continued, stopping in front of the two elevators, only to find a sign saying, 'We deeply apologize for the inconvenience, but our elevators are under repair as of the moment.', plastered over the metal doors. Anxiously, the male turned his attention to the stairs, only to find a nurse carrying a patient behind his back now going down the stairs.

A droplet of sweat trickled down his head.

Kaori Yoshida

Ryuuto’s face once again became the color of his hair. Idly she wondered if that was normal, they were in a hospital right now, perhaps she could ask a doctor about that. His eyes darted around frantically and he began to walk a little faster, obviously embarrassed.

“O-Oh, look. De elevator’s over der. Tis probably best if we get on now.”

Kaori laughed at his words, the odd dialect coupled with his red face, was a rather humorous combination. “Munakata-san you're so silly.”

With those words she finally turned to face forward again, only to be met an out of order elevator.

“Oh my…” Her head cocked slightly to the side and she placed a hand on her cheek in exasperation, “How are we going to get to the roof now…” Kaori’s words trailed off as she noticed a nurse carrying a younger patient down the stairway roof access.

Of course she’d just ask Ryuuto to carry her up to the roof… Her face made its best effort to mimic Ryuuto’s face earlier as she realized, fully what would need to be done.

Kaori once again turned her upper body to face her companion, though this time her red face was cast down shyly, eyes looking over her glasses at him. Her index fingers poked against each other in an embarrassed fidget, “Munakata-san… w-would you, maybe, um. Maybe carry me to the roof?” realizing how abrupt her request might have been she quickly hurried to elaborate, “B-but you don’t have to! We just met after all and I understand if you don’t want to, we barely even know each other, and this is very out of the blue!” She stumbled over her words in her embarrassment, and her eyes closed as she could no longer bear to meet his eyes, “I’m not very heavy I promise!”

Ryuuto Munakata

The maroon-colored hair man stood, completely frozen from shock. Reacting to Kaori's remark of him being silly didn't even cross his mind as of the moment. By now, he was fully convinced that Hiroshi was having a blast while watching them from wherever he is now. Seriously, though? What are the odds? With a helpless sigh, Ryuuto decided to just let his thoughts be. The matter at hand is much more important right now and despite fully knowing what to do, hesitation clouded his mind. The main factor for this, was Kaori Yoshida.

Stealthily, Ryuuto took a glance at the said girl, only to find her as red as a tomato.
”Wha-?!" He almost exclaimed, but quickly stopped himself when he find Kaori turning herself to face him. However, her current expression made him slightly dumbfounded. Fidgeting fingers, looking down aimlessly, broken sentences, perhaps, was she embarrassed? While her sudden request did surprise him a bit, her clumsy follow up made him chuckle, instead.

With a small smile, Ryuuto nodded,
"Sure. Don't worry about it, I don't really think you're heavy, at all."

Somehow, he felt relieved and at ease all of a sudden. It was quite unexplainable, but rather relieving. The male, then crouched in front of Kaori, offering his back to carry her once more.

Kaori Yoshida

Kaori gingerly wrapped her arms back around Ryuuto’s neck, the rest of her body following soon after. She wiggled slightly trying to find the same comfortable position she held before. After a short period, her efforts were rewarded and she found a position that was just right. She turned her attention to what was ahead of them her head peering over Ryuuto’s shoulder.

Strangely she was reminded of being a small girl once again. When she was younger she used to work and play herself to exhaustion, and oftentimes she ended up on her father’s back. Perhaps that was why she found a small smile on her lips, and a light giggle escaping her. “Everything is so different from up here…” she mused.

Taking a deep breath she refocused on the task at hand. Her gaze fixed on the stairs to the roof. “Alright I’m ready Munakata-san.”

Making their way up the stairs Kaori took another light breath to confirm something, “…Cinnamon?” She mumbled the word without realizing it. The raven-haired girl, wondered what she smelled like, probably hospital at this point, seeing as she had been here so long… but that wasn’t a huge problem. In a way the familiar smell of antiseptic and the sight of white walls was comforting to the girl, though she liked to imagine she smelled much better then chemicals.

Noticing the approaching door to the roof, Kaori figured she might as well start on her assigned task. Under her breath she began to sing softly,

“Hanabira ga

Kaze ni yurete ochiru you ni

Inochi wa tada hakanakute

A, daichi e to kiete yuku

…”

While she wouldn’t consider herself an amazing singer, Kaori defiantly had potential. Her only embarrassment in this situation was where she had learned the song. Anime. Hopefully Ryuuto would know the song as well. The song itself wasn’t unique to the anime, it was actually a rather classic folksong, whose reemergence was due to an Anime. She glanced over to Ryuuto, from her place peaking over his shoulder, a light blush tinged her face as she looked his way, before she closed her eyes and began the next line. Hoping he’d know the words and join.

“…

Kanashimi wa

Togireta mirai de wa naku

Omoide no kobako no SUMI ni

Wasurete yukareru koto

…”

Ryuuto Munakata

Slowly, the man felt Kaori's touch on his back once more. Though, he knew that there wasn't really anything wrong with it, it still wasn't a feeling he could immediately get used to. As Ryuuto waited for Kaori to shift into a comfortable position in his back, the boy couldn't help but notice that people were starting to throw looks at them. Of course, it made him a bit uncomfortable, since his sister, Eiko Munakata, was among of them. Nevertheless, despite being uneasy, the male took the time of holding his embarrassment, instead of snapping over everybody like he used to.

That was until, a giggle from behind him melted all his worries out or at least, distracted him for a bit.
"How did it become different?" Ryuuto blinked. After Kaori's approval, the male stood at last, walking off to the stairs with the thought of people staring at him at the back of his mind.

Silently, they made their way through the stairs, until Ryuuto felt Kaori mutter onto his back. The male flinched in surprise, probably because of suddenly hearing a mutter in amidst of the silence or because of the fact that a light breath brushed against his back, but most likely, both. With a slight shivering voice, Ryuuto replied back,
"C-Cinnamon?", he gulped.

Once they were approaching the door to the roof, Ryuuto took a deep breath and opened the door, only to be greeted by a fantastic view of the city, bathing in the sunset. Just when he couldn't be mesmerized more, Ryuuto heard a faint, but angelic voice from behind him.

It was then that he realized, it was Kaori and the song that she was singing, was from Hiroshi's favorite anime. Though, Ryuuto didn't hear it much often, since Hiroshi always skipped openings, endings, and background songs when he was watching anime, he didn't really expect to hear it again.

Don't cry. Don't cry.

The male chanted as tears were starting to well up in his eyes. After all, he made a promise. He swore he wouldn't cry about Hiroshi in front of Kaori, yet he was on the verge of breaking it. It was then that Kaori stopped singing, briefly, giving him time to compose himself. He felt Kaori scoot a little, glancing over him, only to look away when she did.

What am I doing?

Ryuuto asked himself, realizing that Kaori was only fulfilling Hiroshi's wish, nothing more, nothing less. It was only him who was still living in the past and drowning in regrets, a thing that he always did, no matter the situation is. That was why, when Kaori began the next verse, Ryuuto joined her, as well.

"aisaretai

ima ijou ni

fukaku tsuyoku

motomeai

sono kokoro ni

sono hitomi ni--"

However, Ryuuto stopped at the mid verse, his voice cracking in the process. Though, he thought he was good at hiding secrets, apparently, his tears weren't.

Kaori could hear the powerful emotion in Ryuuto’s voice as he joined his voice to the song. It was such a deep sadness, sadness for the friend he lost and Kaori couldn’t help but take on some of that emotion herself as her eyes began to water.

“—Watashi ga ita shirushi wo nokoshite.”

Reaching the first instrumental break in the song, Kaori allowed her voice to tapper off as she slipped off of Ryuuto’s back. With small, careful steps she moved to face him, all thoughts of the doctor’s warnings gone from her mind. Looking up into the young man’s eyes she saw that Ryuuto himself was crying, she had suspected as much when he had been unable to finish the verse he joined in on.

“Munakata-san…” with tremendous effort, frail, shaking arms reached around his neck once again and pulled his teary face down into her embrace, “Even boys cry when they are sad.” In contrast to the great joy Hiroshi’s gift had brought her, it had brought Ryuuto nothing but sadness. Of course he’d be said, his friend was dead and some random girl he barely knew had his heart beating in her chest. This was the least she could do to comfort him in his time of need.

Her own tears began to fall slipping past her glasses and into red hair. Her clothes began to dampen with his tears, but she ignored it. Stroking his hair soothingly she began to sing once again.

“Aiyou ga

Chiheisen ni tokeru you ni

Saigo made kirei na mama

A, watashi wo utsushitetai

Atataka na

Ude no naka ni nemutte'ru

Eien wo te ni iretakute

Onna wa mamono ni naru

Aisaretai ima tashika na

Kimochi dake wo wakachiai

Kono suhada wo kono toiki wo

Mugen ni daite-ite ne onegai

Shiawase no katachi wa

Itsu demo mienai kara

Itai kurai motto anata ni

Aisaretai ima ijou ni

Fukaku tsuyoku motomeai

Sono kokoro ni sono hitomi ni

Watashi ga ita shirushi wo nokoshite.”

As the beautiful scenery of the city from the rooftop was enhanced by the captivating rays of the late afternoon sunset went through, tears continued to drip from the violet haired teen's eyes.

He really was no good, after all.

After breaking promises one after another, Ryuuto felt like suffocating. Guilt was consuming him, spreading throughout his system like wildfire. It was something that he couldn't bring himself to forgive nor ask for forgiveness and would rather be burdened by that sin. However, Ryuuto continued to cry. He continued to bawl his eyes out and choke on tears, not because of the fact that he felt suffocating, but because he was simply miserable over the loss of his friend.

It was then that a soothing voice resonated within his ears.

Ryuuto felt frail arms gently latch onto him, gripping him into a tight, yet warm embrace. Hugs were something that annoyed him especially when Hiroshi was involved, yet, this time, it was just the thing that he needed. He felt himself calming down to the gentle tune of Kaori's singing and her act of stroking his hair. It was then that he felt droplets of water dripping into his scalp, making him realize that Kaori was crying, as well. Feeling responsible for their sudden outburst of tears, Ryuuto muttered in a stifle manner,
"I..I'm sorry."

His tears then started to dry out as the sun hid behind the darkening sky and the night lights began to flicker.

Ryuuto’s shoulders shook, as his tears began to taper off. “I-I’m sorry” The words were shaky and forced. Kaori pulled away slightly so they could meet each others gaze, and not have a muffled conversation into one another’s torso. Ryuuto's eyes were bloodshot from tears, and small damp rivers still shown on his face. She imagined she didn’t look much better herself, but still gave him a kind smile. “You have nothing to be sorry for. You have all the right in the world to cry.”

She waited for him to finish crying then sat down, putting her back to the metal fence on the roof, and patting the space beside her, inviting him to sit.

“I can’t say I know how you feel… I’ve never had many close friends, and I haven’t lost anyone especially close to me before.” Kaori’s look became unreadable,

“Ive always been the one others were expecting to lose…”
There had been so many times, so many times when the family gathered around her sickbed, deathly pale, they had been told she might not make it. Her mother would cry until no tears came, and her father would set his jaw with watery eyes. When she was younger she had cried and feared the end, but with each new year she found her self morning less and less, until finally she had stopped.

“My whole life has been like that. I was born with a weak heart.”
She put a hand to her chest, feeling the strong pumping of Hiroshi’s gift. “The doctors, they told my parents I wouldn't make it far past twelve. It was hard. Waking up each day with the knowledge it might be my last. I can’t even imagine what that must have been like for my friends, for my family.” Kaori removed her glasses, looking up to the vibrant blue sky and lazily floating clouds. “Then, recently I was told I had less then a week to live. This time for sure, my heart was failing. I went to bed for the last time three days ago.”

A smile began to form on her face. “But then, I woke up. Hiroshi Tamotsu, had given me a future. Had given my father a daughter, my mother her child.” She looked back at Ryuuto, tears once again streaming down her face, but this time she was smiling, “I was so happy. I thought to myself, ‘I won’t waste this chance, I’ll live my life to the fullest.’”

She wiped at her wet face with the hem of her sleeve, “Thats why, even if I have to do something embarrassing like sing at the top of my lungs, or get piggy backs from a complete stranger, I'll do it with no regrets, if its for Hiroshi Tamotsu I'll do it without a second thought. I owe him everything.”
