A kingdom stands divided when the king passes away, leaving his two sons to vie for the throne.
The kingdom has never been so divided, but in the midst of the power struggle and the social tension, is a group tasked with the sobering duty of keeping war from breaking out. The Guard was created centuries before in order to protect the kingdom from evil tyrants, but now its members are faced with a new challenge of protecting both heirs from each other and an inevitable split that threatens the kingdom.
This group is composed of talented people, some with colorful pasts. Known as the Royal Guardians, they are skilled warriors and healers, and have been given supernatural power and protection upon recruitment. However, they risk losing said power and protection along with their title if they ever break any of the oaths they make when they are sworn in.
These oaths include:
Never fall for someone within the Guard or those in power (king, queen, prince, or princess). This is because it will cause distractions and may make the guardians make decisions that put others at risk, or cause sway their allegiance away from the Guard (in the case of falling for a royal). But who can really prevent themselves from falling for someone?
You decide which weapon, but there is one weapon you'll be unable to use in battle. In trade, you'll be unable to be killed by that same weapon.
You cannot accept bribes. Not only is this an oath, but you can be exiled or worse for this is seen as treason. This also means you can't accept any payment for your services. Guardians are not rich by trade, but are funded by the kingdom.
You cannot kill a royal. It is not your job to decide who rules the kingdom, only to protect it. In the event a king or queen has to be dethroned, they will have to be arrested and forced to face a trial.
Though your loyalty will be tested especially by princes who threaten you and those you care about if you refuse to comply, your allegiance is strictly to the Royal Guardians. Nothing can ever come between your loyalty to them. In turn, your connection permits you to draw from their strength (limitedly, of course).
-
Extra Information:
There is no leader in the Guard. Decisions are made as a group and voted upon when necessary. However, there will be scholars and advisors who are older guardians and reside nearby to help them along.
Yes, falling in love could very well strip you of honor and get you kicked out of the Guard, but it happens. It would make for an intriguing storyline, but don't force or rush it.
The Guard should always remain neutral where the royals are concerned, but being human makes that impossible. Secretly, one may side with a certain prince and even instigate some of the tension. This is up to you. However, those in the Guard would be more cautious of letting others know of their intentions and beliefs if it puts them at risk of being kicked out.
Many in the Guard have been redeemed from criminal backgrounds, while others were discovered when their heroics or their aptitude for a certain skill caused them to stand out. It's up to you to decide your background.
That being said, I'd like to reiterate that being invited to be a Royal Guardian is an honor. A character would never be forced into it.

Rules:
This is a sandbox roleplay. I have a general direction I want to take the story, but aside from that, you're free to write however you need to for your character as long as it doesn't disrupt the general plot. I'm also open to and encourage ideas.
You don't have to be a soldier. You can choose whatever role you'd like. Some in the guard are healers or animal trainers.
Only human characters are permitted, no fictional creatures.
Aside from the supernatural abilities gained upon oath taking, there is very little magic elsewhere. This is more of a realistic roleplay.
Due to some heavy fighting scenes that may arise, this will be only for those 18+.
Multiple paragraphs are expected so absolutely no one-liners.
