Established in the early 20th century and settled in the remote country side of New York State, Viridian Academy was created as a safe space for demigods to go once they aged out of Camp Half-Blood and entered adulthood. It offers a wide array of courses fit for its special demographic of students, but for those looking for further exclusivity, there’s something beyond the hidden campus and challenging classes: whispers of a secret society echo within the ivy-covered walls of Viridian, but one simply doesn’t go looking for the Order of Prometheus. If they want to be made known, they’ll do it themselves, but only to those they deem deserving of their favor.
It’s not clear how long the Order has been operating, and to most of the Academy’s inhabitants whether or not it even truly exists, but that’s how its members prefer it. The Order is like a slowly-spreading sickness—the longer Viridian’s higher-ups willfully ignore it, the more damage it can do to the school. Until someone puts a forceful stop to their odd practices, though, things will carry on as usual this year, starting with their infamous Herculean Trials.
The unlabeled ivory envelopes, marked only by golden seals, are distributed in the guise of night to the small group of carefully selected, prospective new members of the Order, setting into motion the initiation ritual. No one ever dares to turn down the invitation; by that time, they know too much, and the Order doesn’t take its secret existence lightly. If and when the initiates eventually regret their choice to follow through, it’s too late—they’re already in the Order’s suffocating grasp, and the only way out is falling victim to the Herculean Trials as so many other students have in the past, mysterious vanishings written off by the school board as runaway cases.
Things are bound to be taken too far eventually—the Gods have been paying closer attention to the Order’s antics than the Aegis-born realize, and their patience is wearing thin—and when they do, will the Order of Prometheus finally reach its time of rising up against the Olympians, or will they be blind-sided by the fact that perhaps they weren’t as invincibly strong as they’ve come to believe?

In the Greek myths, Aegis was the shield of Athena, and likewise, the leaders of the Order of Prometheus view themselves as invincible. There’s one appointed from each House as a representative in the Order, an upperclassman with too much experience and an abundance of confidence. They believe that the Gods are old-fashioned—they’ve had their turn at power, but it’s time someone more deserving took their place. The Aegis-born, as they call themselves, treat each other like minor Gods in the making and the rest of the Order as their followers. They confuse their responsibilities as the Heads of their respective Houses with the opportunity to create chaos from a safe distance, taking little regard to the consequences of their actions. Their high standing has inflated their egos, to say the least, but when the other members of the Order need them, can they be counted on to make a sacrifice for the greater good?

The best of what Viridian has to offer, these students were strong and smart enough to overcome the Aegis-born’s Herculean Trials yet still fell victim to their cultish way of thinking. While they’re not nearly as fanatic as their leaders, the Children of Prometheus are prone to doing their superiors’ dirty work, often without a second thought. If the Aegis-born ever need a scape goat, any of these members are likely to be the face of blame. Whether they have been won over by their leaders’ beliefs or are too afraid of what would happen if they tried to leave the Order, the Children of Prometheus seem perfectly content to be dragged into the chaos. Most of them, anyway, though, every once in a while, a rogue member tries to warn the new initiates of the Order’s dark side. Maybe this year, they’ll be successful in dissuading a few of the prospects. Probably not, but it’s worth a shot, right?

The Order of Prometheus is a very selective group—not many are entirely convinced of its existence, as it’s rare they ever reveal themselves. Each year, a small handful of potential new members are picked by the Aegis-born to undergo a series of tests—the Herculean Trials, named after the myths of Heracles and his twelve tasks—to prove that they are worthy of a spot in the Order. The Trials are no small feat—some prospective members have died in the past. Many of the tests involve fulfilling nearly impossible requests—stealing a Golden Apple from the Garden of Hesperides, spending a night in the Underworld—that draw the attention of the Gods as a way of challenging their authority. Eventually, things are bound to go too far, their limits reached, but the Aegis-born claim they’ll be ready when they do.
