A City Rained In Blood ~1x1 with Lucyfer~

Boondox

♥TATTØØED B£AST♥

The clouds hung low over the star lit city, a light rainfall patted against the roof of the Black's mansion. The house barely lit at all, very few candles scattered along the halls and in each room. Dark crimson eyes stared out into the night, a low growl emitting from the figures throat. James Black heaved a heavy breath an closed his eyes for a moment, taking in the sounds of the rain before moving to grasp his leather jacket, sliding it on over the black t-shirt. Sliding on his boots and leather gloves he then glanced over his shoulder, his messy wind blown looking ebony hair seemed to glisten against the dim light of the candles as he started down the hall, knowing very well what he was up to this very night. Stepping outside into the night he raised his arms up over his head, a thick cloud of fog seemed to wrap around him an then a small surge of wind scattered the cloud and a bat took his place. Quickly flapping its wings toward the barely lit city streets,

With a light thud, James reformed into his normal form, shaking himself slightly as he stood in the vacant alley. A scuffle seemed to catch his attention up farther where the alley split into two. A sly smile played on James' face as he strolled forward, his foot steps light and silent. As he came to stand at the end of one of the two splits, he tilted his head an took in a breath. A small chuckle escaped him as he crossed his arms, watching a man and woman who seemed to be getting pretty heated in the alley, although James knew this man. The woman was silent until the other man pulled away, she let out a groan before falling limp in the mans arms, she had fallen unconscious. James sighed an shook his head "Couldn't even wait for me Marcus?" James had a deep voice with a husky, rough edge to it. Marcus who was wiping the thick crimson liquid from the edges of his mouth chuckled under his breath "Sorry, I got impatient" James growled but then looked up the other split in the alley "Oh well, come I think I smell another late night wanderer" James was moving even before he had finished speaking and Marcus was quick to trail him. Marcus stood about 5'10 an had a light bronze skin tone, although it was still fairly pale, light brown shaggy hair that fell to about the nape of his neck and the same deep crimson eyes that James possessed.

Reaching the end of the alley, James was the first to step out onto the side walk. A pair of teen girls seemed to be heading in their direction. As James slowly started to stroll toward them, his hearing could pick up their conversation. They had seen a movie, it was only them two. A sly grin played on his face as he grew closer to the two, finally speaking up "Hello ladies care to chat for a moment" Being a well spoken gentlemen, the two ladies exchanged glances before giggling like school girls an one spoke up to him "Alright what is it?" With that James grinned an turned to slip into a small alley in between two shops along the street. Puzzled the two girls followed, they didn't get far before James grasped one by the shoulder an pulled her close, using his other hand to cover her mouth he then opened his mouth an sank his fangs into her skin, the crimson liquid poured into his mouth willingly an he could heart her heart beat racing. At this point Marcus had sprung into action as well, doing the same to grasp the other girl an cover her mouth before sinking his own teeth into her neck. James took what he needed an then pulled away from her skin, she too had fallen unconscious, setting her down against the brick building before he turned to see Marcus doing the same. With that James snapped his head toward the road "Humans, quickly Marcus get out of here" James snarled an Marcus was smart to follow James' demand, leaping up onto the rooftop above them. James swiftly morphed into the pure black dog, much similar to a husky, although his tail curled up toward his back.

A group of young men were walking by when one looked down the alley, James was sniffing at one of the girls feet, acting like a normal canine. The boy managed to strike another on the arm before they passed "Hey is that Janelle and Lisa?" The other few boys poked their heads down the alley an then started toward him. James pulled back his ears an started growling, before he ran toward them barking furiously, they all split an made way for him to get back to the side walk, not waiting around to see what happened, James kept running although this time he decided to head to the park, knowing very well Marcus would catch up with him.

“Welcome to Franklin,” a female voice spoke as the passengers exited the train and moved into the train station proper, following the cues of lights, signs, and people who had been here before. In the midst of these warm bodies was one cold one, a woman in a burgundy top and black skirt. Her heels clicked on the cement as she followed the herd into the station, one hand wrapped tight around her luggage, and the other adjusting the strap of a backpack that contained the rest of her things.

She was twisting her head this way and that to catch a sign that directed her out of the station and onto the streets.

Eventually the herd started to split up and go their varying ways. New trains needed to be caught. People were met. The blonde woman was left standing in the middle of the station, looking up at the signs. Finally, one of them pointed towards a numbered street, and she took off in that direction. ‘You don’t even know where you’re going, Enna.’

No, Enna didn’t, but outside the station was the first step. Then she’d have to figure out how to find hunting grounds. It was there that she would likely find others of her kind, and from there she could figure out how to integrate herself into the city.

The street she stepped out into was full of taxis and buses. A few of the drivers called out to her, since she looked so lost, but she ignored them. The rainfall was comfortable, and she didn’t have anything to worry about amongst the things she had packed. Her one piece of electronics was a smart phone, and she didn’t think it was in danger of getting soaked where it was.

The lights of the city led her to a more packed area, full of business men and teenagers out to get away from their lives. Enna smiled politely as she passed them by, but kept her eyes alert. The city naturally progressed to a park area, no doubt a public environment meant to be a relaxing place away from the huge buildings that towered over everyone—although the buildings were still all around the park.

At this hour, it was relatively empty. ‘So this wouldn’t be decent hunting grounds.’ Enna turned her head back the way she’d come, and she thought to head back into the depths of the actual city and explore its nooks and crannies when she caught sight of a stray dog, running full tilt into the park. An amused grin crossed her lips, and she wondered if it really was stray, or if its owner was somewhere chasing it.

Enna gave a whistle, deciding to bank on the latter. If she could get its attention, she could take it back to its owner, and perhaps chat them up about places to go in the city.

Or places not to go.

Either one.

Galloping gracefully and hastily into the park, it was when his paws hit the ground that one of his ears flicked to the sound of a whistle, his deep eyes turned to land on a woman, she was trailing a fair amount luggage with her. Perking his ears he wagged his tail slightly, she was absolutely stunning. Tossing his head around in a playful manner he padded up to her an sat on his hind, tilting his head to look up at her. Taking in a deep breath however he got no scent an he couldn't feel the warmth of a human. Vampire. Just as James came to realize the truth, Marcus was slipping into the park. James glanced over his shoulder at Marcus an pinned his ears slightly, now confused of what to do. Finally he stood an positioned himself next to the woman an started barking, in the general direction of Marcus. It didn't take much effort to get his attention an he was slowly advancing toward the two. Marcus wore a simple black dress shirt, unbuttoned at the chest with a pair of dark jeans and simple black shoes. As he stopped in front of the woman he cleared his throat, glancing down at James "Sorry Ma'am, was my dog being a burden? He got lose an I was just on my way to fetch him" James wanted to growl, how dare Marcus call him "his" dog. Pushing it aside he then glanced back up at the woman, knowing very well Marcus would figure it out soon that she wasn't a human.

As the two waited for the woman's answer, not far off the small group of boys were running up the side walk frantically, obviously they had seen something they didn't like. Both Marcus and James watched them scatter up the street an then went back to waiting. The rain was beginning to come to a halt now as the three stood in the park, the swings creaked at the wind pushed them. It was a slightly eerie place at night. It was when James was staring out at the tree line when Marcus finally realized an he frowned, before snarling an stepping forward "You smell like a new born" Marcus was about to lash out when James leaped up, grasping him by the arm and wrenching him away from the woman. All vampires had a certain smell to them. New born's were a slightly bitter smell, The middle aged Vampires had a somewhat sweet smell to them, although it wasn't overbearing and Elders had a very potent smell, that was almost sour. Marcus fought against James' jaw that was locked onto his forearm "James you fool! Let go of me" With that he was able to slam James against the grass below them. heaving a heavy breath, James never let go of his arm. Marcus struggled against James' strength but turned to look at the woman "What is a new born like you doing out here? Normally you don't come to this part of town!"

That was it, James had enough of Marcus' foolish behavior an he quickly released his arm, the shirt torn an a small amount of blood trickled from the teeth wounds. James morphed human quickly, making sure no human's were near by to see it "Marcus you stubborn fool, be quiet you know we cannot be to loud!" James glared daggers at the slightly younger vampire and Marcus had no choice but to cross his arms an let James handle the situation. Now turning to face the woman he sighed heavily "I'm sorry, my friend here is not so comfortable with new born's.. Many are unpredictable" James extended a cold hand toward her "As you might have heard, I'm James" Marcus grumbled with disgust but he never once said any actual words, just sounds of discomfort.

The dog was friendly, so perhaps it wasn’t a stray. Enna dropped her large back and crouched down, reaching out a hand to pet the black creature. “Giving someone a bit of hell today?” She asked jokingly. The wet dog smell was more potent than the smell of vampire underneath, but she did notice something off about the creature before her. She couldn’t place, though, before her attention was drawn by running footsteps.

‘And you must be the owner.’ Enna looked down at the dog as if to say ‘wait’, and then stood up straight. Her smile was friendly and she shook her head at the question, “No, not at all, he came right over when I whistled.” That was the truth after all. Enna was about to extend her hand to shake, to properly introduce herself, when the man before her hissed. The wind wasn’t in her favor, but apparently she was standing before an older vampire.

She lowered the hand she started to extend, “Yes?” Enna was oblivious to the bias against neonates in this city, so she was taken by surprise when the vampire made to lash out at her. She took a quick step back, blue eyes widening.

The dog jumped to her defense, which was a surprise. The answer to it revealed itself soon enough, as the dog—James—shifted. Clothes and all. An impressive feat, actually. This one seemed to have authority in the situation, so briefly Enna wondered if they were childe and sire. Either way, she reached out and accepted the hand of James. Her grip was firm. “My name is Enna. I apologize. I was unaware there were boundary limits. I arrived in the city today,” she glanced between the two of them as she released James’s hand after shaking it, and looked at Marcus.

With the look, she would try to push forward an emotion of relief. Hopefully his thoughts would follow the feeling, to try and believe that she was not so unpredictable, that she was more refined. It was clearly Marcus she needed to twist in order to survive here. James wasn’t going to be too rash. “I mean no harm. If you tell me where I am supposed to be, I shall go there and make myself known to whomever is in charge of these things,” she assured him.

The young woman took the situation quite well an James made sure to keep a tab on Marcus as he kicked at the grass absent mindedly. James smiled politely at Enna an nodded his head "No need to apologize, there isn't any boundary limits but normally the new born's don't stray this far so its uncommon to see one" James was surprised by her grip, although vampires did usually have a pretty good grip. As he dropped her hand he then placed both in his jean pockets. As he stood in silence for a moment a small wave of relief seemed to seep over him, it was strange but he wasn't complaining. The night seemed like it was growing restless as the breeze began to pick up an ruffle Marcus' lose shirt, the trees also chiming an swaying. The clouds finally shifted so the moon could reveal itself, the calming rays of silver seemed to help with the calming of Marcus as he unfolded his arms an came to stand next to James, although a step or so back.

At the mention of leaving, James raised an eyebrow an shook his head "No uhm.. New born's are allowed anywhere in the city but like Marcus, some will be quite violent toward a new born.." James paused to look at Marcus an he sighed, waving a hand before looking toward the farther side of town "I'm heading home James.. I suggest you do the same soon" Before James could hound him Marcus was off, gone through one of the alley's across the street. James chuckled an shrugged his shoulders "There are many more stubborn vampires like him.. If you like you can come back to the mansion with me.. I know Marcus doesn't enjoy New born's but you seem like you have a pretty level head, though cross me an I'll tear you apart" James wasn't lying when he offered his mansion to her, he was a kind man and could easily see that she was going to need somewhere to stay while trying to make it on her own.

A pair of older men were walking on the other side of the street when they happened to notice Enna and James, although their interest was not James at all an then were sneering as they started to cross the empty street "Hey there pretty, is that your boyfriend?" The two obviously were either high on drugs or drunk on alcohol. As they grew closer it was easy to tell it was alcohol that was playing with their brains. James sighed heavily an glanced to her silently, not knowing if he should step in or let her handle her own. The two men were nudging each other as they looked her over "Oh, you have a lot of things, care to come back to my place?" One of the two grinned an reached out a hand toward her, the hand only got a inch or so raised before James cleared his throat, the man immediately turning to face him "There a problem?" The mans slurred speech was starting to irritate James' head an he glared at the man "Yes, your alcoholic slurring" The two men exchanged glances before looking back to Enna.

No official boundaries, just tensions. ‘Sires must be terrible here.’ Enna wondered if that was a common thing as she observed their body language. They were relaxing. The spell of her power was taking its hold, and for that, she was personally relieved. “I’ll try to keep that in mind.”

Great. She might have to hop cities if it was going to be this way. Enna didn’t need the stress of waiting another century or two before she was accepted among others. ‘Well, you could trick them.’ The shiver she felt wasn’t caused by the rain, and she crossed her arms over her chest. Enna had felt the change in her own blood when her sire’s soul entered into her body. It had felt stronger, albeit not enough to fool these two.

The thought wasn’t humored, though the temptation was there. Obviously she couldn’t do that. It would be suspicious now that she was already known as a newborn.

Marcus left them, and Enna lifted one hand to wave. James then made an offer, and Enna chuckled a bit, “I didn’t think you’d take home strays,” she made it a joke. A mansion? She gave him a once-over. He didn’t look out of touch with the times at all by his attire. The fact he claimed to have a mansion made her wonder how old he actually was, though. “I’m not going to decline the offer. I need somewhere to stay during the day,” that was her main fear—daylight. She had wanted to find others, in the hopes of finding a place to stay, if only temporarily.

She bent to pick up her bag, just as a couple of drunkards started to approach. She hefted her bag up before either could reach for it, and closed her eyes. There was agitation on her face, but also concentration. ‘How does it work?’ With the soul came knowledge of something else, something Enna had been on the receiving end too many times.

She swallowed down old hate, and plastered a clearly fake smile on her lips as she turned her head towards the two. Her eyes flew open, and the blue would seem to turn black as she looked between the humans. She wanted them to run in fear. “Leave me alone.” She didn’t know what they’d see, but she knew it wouldn’t be good.

Trailing behind the two drunkards was a vampire who had thought to hunt them earlier. He’d followed them towards the park because, well, he preferred to hunt in the park. Plenty of people wandered here alone and could be easily overtaken and left, without witnesses showing up. The brown haired man came to a pause a few yards away from foursome, and an amused look came to his lips as he saw the ever-familiar nouveau riche James alongside another vampiress that was completely unfamiliar to the man in the Metallica t-shirt and ripped jeans.

‘Oh, you humans have a death wish!’ He thought when he saw the humans drawn to the vampires. Well, the female in particular. Stupid, stupid, stupid. He wanted to call out to them, but saw a flash that made him pause in his approach. His blood felt momentarily colder as he was caught by those black eyes for a second.

James chuckled quietly as she happened to bring up the comment of strays an he shrugged, looking back at her "I have a large home with not many vampires to share it with so I offer it to those who I believe deserve it" James smirked at her an then listened to her intently as she explained she was worried about the daylight an he couldn't blame her, he too would hate to be put in that situation an would only hope that someone would offer him the same sort of comfort until he was able to make it on his own without anyone else's aid. James raised an eye brow as she seemed to focus on something an it was when she turned an opened her eyes that he truly understood what she was doing, attempting to run them off.

The two drunken fools were baffled by what they had seen an one even turned to leave, but the other was to curious for his own good an began to chuckle as he stepped toward her "You are an interesting young lady" He took another daring step an James grumbled, stepping forward now to grasp the man by the throat an almost effortlessly tossing him to the ground, standing over him he looked down at the man "Leave. Now." James was oddly angered by this mans presence. As he waited for the human's reaction James' eyes lifted to see another vampire watching them. The figure was slightly to far to distinguish an his attention was fully on the drunk beneath him so really he couldn't exactly pay attention to the other on the street.

The drunk was slightly taken aback by the strength that was shown from the younger man an he stood slowly. Heeding the mans warning, the drunk nodded slowly before taking off in the same general direction of the one he had shown up with. James sighed heavily as the man slipped out of view an he then moved his attention to the other vampire, knowing very well he wasn't a new born an he wasn't sure how he would handle one being in this general area. James then glanced back to Enna an cleared his throat, shrugging a little "I couldn't help myself" With that he then raised an eye brow but nodded in a small greeting to the other vampire, looking toward the hills that lead to his mansion he looked back to Enna, knowing daylight would approach them soon.

Drunks could be difficult, Enna reflected. Though they were more susceptible to being manipulated, their reactions were also delayed. One thought to run off, but the other’s reaction was delayed long enough for him to find what Enna did to be interesting. Rather than run, he approached. He didn’t close. James again intervened, and threw the man right to the ground.

Enna couldn’t help but smirk. ‘Shoulda run.’ Was written on her face, and the man was quickly realizing that. He was told to leave again, and this time, he listened. James’s attention drifted elsewhere, though, and Enna followed his gaze. His nod.

Another vampire approached, crossing his arms as he did so, “You know, those were mine, Mark,” he said, but he didn’t sound all that upset. Enna arched a single blonde brow at the stranger.

Though the wind wasn’t blowing in her favor, it was impossible to ignore the sweet scent that wafted off of him. Her own sire hadn’t smelled this good, and Enna clenched one hand into a fist as the thought came up, ‘Wouldn’t he be nice to eat?’ and she swallowed. ‘I bet his soul’s even sweeter.’

Apparently her shoulder angel was gone, so she was going to have to be good without its voice in her ear. “Who are you?” The strange vampire asked.

“Enna.”

“Enna who?”

“Enna Robbins.”

“You look tasty,” he stated bluntly, amused as the blood she had in her body rushed to her cheeks. “Protip, don’t bother with mental vodou on drunks. Rarely works out,” he could tell she was young, figured the tip would be appreciated.

Then he shifted his attention back to James, not bothering to introduce himself to her. He said instead, “Not that you don't, Mark. You always look delicious," he informed with a broad grin, then said, "The Lady Ivy wants to see you tomorrow night. Will I have good news to report to her with, or will I be telling her you ran off my meal instead?”

‘Ivy?’ Enna was lost, but decided to be happy that this Elder wasn’t anything like Marcus. He didn’t seem to care that a neonate was around at all.

For a strange reason James didn't trust this male, even though he was very familiar with him, and knew that he worked for Ivy, the thought that he was unpredictable stayed present at the back of his mind. Being jerked back to reality as the male came closer, stating that the two drunks had been his target. James cleared his throat an placed a hand to his own chest, a signal of sympathy, even though you could tell both men were not to bothered "I apologize, I was unaware you were hunting them" With that he dropped his hand an looked back to Enna who had immediately caught the older vampires attention. James felt as though he wanted to intervene but he didn't an decided to stay put, folding his arms across his chest an his dull, dark eyes laid calmly on the two other vampires as he listened to the conversation that was taking place. She looked tasty? Lovely way to greet someone. However his comment about the drunks was true, half the time they were pointless to even try to convince to leave you alone, James had his own experiences an knew very well that the only way to get rid of them was to show dominance.

As James was called upon his head snapped in the direction of the other male, raising a single eye brow James couldn't help but smirk as he was thrown the compliment. James had been told he had a very sweet smell and normally he does well to try and mask it with many human cologne and different scents but it hardly works to his benefit. With a light grin he nodded his head an replied "Thank you, I'll take that as a compliment" Although some vampires could easily use that as a 'I'm going to track you until I can have you' sort of sign but James didn't sense that from this one and even then James wouldn't let him get to close. As he then stated about seeing Ivy tomorrow night he wanted to groan like a child but he didn't, biting his lower lip he sighed heavily an nodded slowly, reaching a single pale hand up to run through his ebony, wind blown looking hair "Yes, I will be there. Therefore that's good new to report to her, not the fact that I accidentally scared off your drunken meals" With that he turned to Enna an cleared his throat "Daylight will be upon us soon, I suggest we head back to the mansion" James was not willing to stay with this vampire any longer.

The trees whistled an cracked as the breeze picked up once more an he lifted his is head to look up at the sky before turning his eyes back to her, holding out his arm he raised a brow "Are we ready or are we going to be here all night?" The mansion was a fair jaunt outside of town but for a vampire it would only take a few minutes to reach it, by car it could possibly take 30 to 45 minutes. James had been able to do one extra thing with his ability, he could change the sizes of the animals he shifted into, however he had to decide the size before he morphed for the first time because after that he cannot alter the creation, his body is like a chip, once the final product was released it was saved so he didn't need to construct the bones an everything every time he was to shift. However the animals were all roughly normal size, his panther was quite large, probably about the size of a shorter horse, yet he could carry people if necessary.

The stranger clapped his hands together as James agreed to see Ivy the next day, “Oh splendid, I do hate bringing her bad news! She’ll be in her penthouse, I don’t think this is throne room business.”

The quizzical expression on the face of Enna caused the stranger to explain as he stepped back, “Oh, Lady Ivy runs things around her. You could come, she likes to know who’s in her town. You’re, what, a century now?”

“No…just around 50.” She looked much younger than fifty, but that was the blessing of vampirism.

The man wrinkled his nose. Funny, his sense of smell rarely led him wrong. “Really? Curious." Her blood still smelled like a fledgling, but it hadn't smelled that young. Of course, so many smelled like fledglings to him. Perhaps he was losing his touch? 'No.' He wouldn't believe that. "Well, I’m Dane. I’ll see you both there,” with that, he turned, and jogged off without a proper farewell.

“There are…strange people in this town,” Enna stated as her eyes followed his departure, before she shook herself from the oddity and recalled that a question had been asked, “Ah, yes. I’d be happy to accompany you back to your home,” she made sure she had a good grip on her luggage, glanced around, and then gave a nod to James. “I’ll follow,” she didn’t, after all, know the way to the mansion.

She didn’t know the way to anywhere yet, but that could be worked out later. She’d have more time to explore tomorrow. She hadn’t realized how late it was. The train must have gotten delayed or something, it was supposed to arrive much earlier than this. ‘Point is it got me here while it was dark.’ It would not have been good if daylight had come while she was on the train. Turning to ash in front of a train full of people would not be good for the vampire community as a whole.

As the male took off, in a rather pleasant mood, James sighed lightly an he then looked to Enna who had agreed to follow him. Sadly he couldn't simply fly back. Walking to the outskirts of the city, once he hit the tree line, he glanced over his shoulder at the young female an grinned "Hope you can keep up" With that he shot forward, running swiftly through the tree's dodging them as he ran. The wind would have stung a humans face but for himself, James enjoyed it an was familiar with the surrounding area's of his home. The trees swayed in the light breeze an the moon was glistening against the dark sky, the crows seemed t be restless as they grew closer to the mansion an once the reached the gated drive way was when he stopped to glance over his shoulder for Enna.

James had always been on his own, originally being from a different city it was hard for James to adjust an he had never had anyone really offer him assistance so when he had seen Enna in his exact position he couldn't help but feel sympathy for her. Yes, Vampires do have feelings although some feelings can be rather cold depending on the person. James shoved the gate open to his mansion an didn't bother to look back at her, knowing she would follow without question. Stepping up to the large oak doors he pushed one open, leaving it open for her. The mansion was barely lit an as you stepped inside you were in a large main hall, as you continued there was a large dining room with a long table an a fair amount of chairs. The room across from the Dining hall was the kitchen, although he never used it. Once at the end of the hall there was a winding staircase. The option of going up or down was left up to the person, however James decided on going up the set of winding stairs.

As they came to a long hall way there was doors on either side, two bathrooms and three bedrooms on just this floor alone. Stopping at the second door to his right, James gestured toward the door "This is one of the spare rooms I have, Its yours until you wish to leave" With that he turned the knob slowly an pushed the door open. The room was fitted with a king size bed and a fire place at the far side of the room with a simple sofa an coffee table. The door on the left side of the bed lead into a large, empty walk-in closet. Two night stands on either side of the bed, both had lamps placed on the surface. James smiled politely an gestured across the hall "That's the bathroom if you need it for anything" He then stepped out of the room an wandered up the hall to the last door on the left, stepping inside to change his clothing. Putting on a pair of gray jogging pants and a simple black muscle shirt, walking to the closed doors that lead out to his balcony he pulled both open, the nights breeze rushing into his room like wild fire.

Keeping up wasn’t terribly problematic. It was clear that James was more accustomed to his own speed, but even so, the young vampire was able to follow him. ‘Likely never catch him.’ James’s powers had manifested physically, if his shapeshifting was any indication. Enna theorized it also affected his own natural set of abilities when he was in the humanoid form. Or at least that’s what she told herself until James came to a stop, at last, before the mansion that must be his. ‘Or this luggage….’ Enna had managed to run with it, but it had been a pain.

Even so, on coming to a stop, she straightened up and acted as if it hadn’t bothered her in the least.

The gates were shoved open without a word, and she followed him into the mansion, looking about with each step and trying to discern information about the man before her from his space. ‘Bathrooms?’ Now, showers and such she understood, but toilets? ‘Do you have humans visit?’ That would be the only reason Enna could think of to have such things in the home.

A door was opened for her, and she was startled to see the fire place. ‘Either you have no fear of fire, or you’re really trying to blend in.’ Enna would not be lighting the fire place during her stay. She’d learned exactly how close to paper her skin was around that substance. “Thank you, James,” she said when he informed her it was hers. She’d try to be out of his hair as soon as possible, before she wore out her welcome.

Before she could consider asking about others who might reside there, he was off. She didn’t follow him, but walked into the room loaned to her and shut the door behind her. The luggage all fell on the bed before she took to wandering the room and turning things over, looking for any bits of information left in the spare room that would give her some information about this welcoming host.
