- Those who “demand” respect (generally police or other ‘authorities’)
History: Mina Starling was the eldest of the Starling family, and was going to inherit her father’s position in the Melchior guild, one of three named after the Three Magi as they were meant to be the “wise” guardians of Britain. The Melchior guild specialized in the realm of the supernatural, dealing with threats from people dabbling in magic or from the creatures themselves, while also serving as ambassadors and speakers for those inhuman creatures.
Their reputation was mixed, but over the years they became respected through the fear they invoked in others. There were three families, the Starlings, the Burkes, and the McFaddens. Mina was engaged to Andrew Burke, and her brother, Jonah, was engaged to Katherine McFadden. Both were taught and expected to participate equally in the guild work, which was another reason why their father engaged both to guild members, an act that hadn’t been done in years. Their mother had been brought in from outside the guilds.
Then, the McFaddens were destroyed in one night. No traces were left from the fire. Investigations began, and then the Burkes fell. The Starlings were, obviously, next. Though they tried to be prepared, they weren’t. None of their wardings worked. The family was taken from a carriage on their way back to their burning home. Mina escaped that initial crisis and made it to the burning remains of her home, but that was where they tracked to her—it was the expected place she’d run to.
She was knocked out. She didn’t expect to wake, but when she did she observed her brother being incinerated. She was able to feign sleep quickly enough, but his screams were impossible to block out. Her act allowed her to be able to steal a blade when one of the captors came to take her to the fire, as well. She slit his throat, and dealt with the others in the room. She didn’t waste time, but use their bodies and their souls to summon a demon, knowing from their laughter that already the rest of the Starlings were dead. If she was ever going to have revenge for this act, she’d need help from one of those creatures she was sworn to remove from the UK.
