- 01File:///C:/A LETTER.The ouroboros moves in an endless cycle — creation and destruction, unending and voracious.
Dreams are temptation. Reflections of reality easily molded to your every whim and fantasy, envisioning the world as sculpted by your hand. For some, it is an escape. For others, it is their prison. But there is no question about it: dreams are pure, unlimited creation, an untapped potential of possibilities to be discovered and explored. That is exactly what makes them so dangerous.
You have been recruited for a mission. A ridiculous, outrageous, downright suicidal mission, far higher risk than the promised handsome reward of millions of dollars you would receive if the job was done properly. Maybe it was left in your mailbox, in your car’s glove compartment, or even laid upon your bedroom pillow. The employer of such a mission seems to be nothing if not persistent. A black envelope with sloped white ink addressed to you. Inside, a brief description written upon creamy ivory paper states:
"Extraction job. $4 million dollar payout.
February 8th, 10 P.M. 13 Crescent St, London.
Urgently,
Tasya Kuznetsova."
File:///C:/A JOB.“An idea is like a virus, resilient, highly contagious. The smallest seed of an idea can grow. It can grow to define or destroy you.”The promise of four million dollars was god damn alluring, but being able to hold a favor over the head of Tasya Kuznetsova? Priceless.
The year is 2024, with February quietly inching on day by day, the chill of winter threatening to break at any moment. The best architect money can buy in the dreamsharing industry has sent off a flare, a cry for help, urging those up to the task to embark on the nigh impossible mission of freeing her twin brother from his own mind. The meeting had been set, a time and a place, but what kind of emergency could constitute such a situation?
Deep in the lower levels of an esteemed colleague's basement was one Timofey Kuznetsov, the twin brother of Tasya, a man possessed.
This was no paranormal haunting, but instead an unfortunate and disastrous consequence of Timofey working a less than safe dreamsharing gig that nearly left him in a coma. The details of what he truly did were blurry, but something deep in his subconscious had been unleashed, a presence that quickly forced Timofey to question his reality and assumed control of his body the moment he woke up and the somnacin wore off. Wherever Timofey's true consciousness is, or if there's anything even left, lies deep within his dreams. After nearly dozens of attempts, close calls with somnacin overdoses, tears, sweat, blood, and frustration, Tasya has been forced to look for outside help. Whatever facets of his subconscious that had been shaken loose now run rampant in his dreams and bleed into his waking hours, forcing his sister to keep him sedated until help arrives.
A team of ten seems excessive, but Tasya will do anything to get her brother back. - 02File:///C:/THE PREMISE.The origins of dreamsharing have nearly been lost to obscurity, buried deep into government files, secured networks, and the memories of retired countrymen. Many argue that its origin is of no significance - its potential far outweighs whatever its original intended use was, but the story is as follows:
Nearly twenty five years ago, a piece of technology that wasn't meant to exist was stolen from the C.I.A., a product of a top secret project conducted by the American government only years beforehand. While the facts are debatable, it seems that military scientists had invented the machine called a PASIV that used somnacin to induce a state of sleep called dreamsharing. Its original intended purpose was to train soldiers without the concern of physical threat, allowing them to occupy one another's dreams and exploring deep into an individual's subconscious. The truth had never reached the general public, but the technology created a lucrative market for those in the know. One stolen PASIV turned into a booming business of replicating such machines, and soon, the dreamsharing industry began to bloom in the criminal underworld.
Dreamsharing has become the money making business. Dangerous, obscure, but intriguing, high risk and high reward for those who wish to embark into the cerebral. With the use of the PASIV, visiting the dreams of others and drawing out their deepest secrets could be done in a night, or hell- in a few hours. Not everyone could dream, however. Those who could, and those who showed a talented proficiency in the dreamscape, created a hot job market. Each dreamer is different, and it seems those who can dreamshare may even present different unique skillsets that wouldn't be conceivable in reality. No respected professional would be caught dead without a totem - an item made uniquely by any individual working in the dream business, used to help determine dreams from reality while they work.
Those who have received Tasya's letter are considered some of the best and brightest in their field, whether it be extraction, understanding the human psyche, or even combat training. Whatever the mission may be, each one must steel themselves to enter the dreamscape with their team and dive headfirst into the unknown.
- 03File:///C:/THE EXTRACTOR.STATUS1/1 OPEN.The smooth operator of the dream sharing business, and the leader of the Kuznetsov job. The purpose of the Extractor is to infiltrate and pluck out people's secrets through their dreams. The fundamentals of the role lie in them being the perfect con man – they create a false set of circumstances that manipulate the subject into revealing their secrets to complete their job, quick on the draw and able to adapt to the malleable circumstances of the dream world. The only difference between a typical thief and an Extractor is that these false sets of circumstances are created through dreams. The Extractor is both artist and producer, a convincing role to play.
File:///C:/THE FORGER.STATUS0/2 CLOSED.The Forger is a master of deceit, with the ability of in-dream impersonations. A talented doppelganger, they are able to not only change their physical appearance, but adopt the mannerisms of other individuals within dreams to impersonate them perfectly. With enough skill, a Forger can take a wide variety of appearances, unrestricted by age, gender, or size. They can use this for many advantages, mainly to gain the trust of the dream's subject, gather information, and confuse their enemies. Smaller affairs typically only use one Forger, but for the size and severity of the Kuznetsov job, Tasya is recruiting two.
File:///C:/THE ARCHITECT.STATUS1/2 OPENThe Architect is just what their title implies – they are the creator of the dream space, occupying the dream and designing cityscapes, stretches of mazes and labyrinths for miles, able to manipulate its appearance at will. When bringing a mark into the dream, a skilled Architect is absolutely essential to help the dreamer make the dream feel real. They need to show true attention to detail, being able to replicate things from bedrooms to an entire street intersection. Not only that, but the Architect designs mazes or other secure locations for the dream, in which the mark’s subconscious will hide their secrets. For the job, Tasya will be the initial Architect, but as they drop deeper into the levels of Timofey's subconscious she has enlisted the help of another Architect.
File:///C:/THE CHEMIST.STATUS2/2 OPEN.The Chemist is the specialist responsible for developing chemical compounds required to achieve dream sharing via the PASIV device. While somnacin is the main ingredient, the rule of the Chemist is crucial as they are typically their connection to the real world, and the individual available to safely drop them deeper into layers of a subject’s subconscious. As the chemicals are administered to human subjects, a chemist requires a considerable understanding of pharmacology and how the chemicals will affect the biological state of the sleeper. More skilled chemists will be able to compose compounds to attain different effects in a sleeper's dream.
File:///C:/THE TETHER.STATUS1/1 OPEN.The Tether can be considered the point man of the operation, the right hand man of the Extractor. A unique factor in the arsenal of dreamers, the Tether is the hand of the compass, the home base for their teammates whose presence and location can act as their home beacon. With enough focus, a Tether can intrinsically know the location of each teammate within the level of dream they currently occupy, and can quite literally jump through the dreamscape to each of their locations. For larger jobs with so many moving parts, and for missions conducted in such large dreamspaces that can replicate entire cities, they prove to be an invaluable asset. They can teleport their teammates back to their original location, but they cannot freely teleport through the world at will.
File:///C:/THE NURSE.STATUS1/1 OPEN.The reality of conducting heists and missions while running through someone's pure consciousness is that it can be stupidly, ridiculously dangerous. Once a subconscious detects an outsider or a threat, each teammate's life is at stake as it manifests itself into a physical threat against the invaders - that is what the exceedingly rare type of dreamer, the Nurse, comes in. While its not an instant fix, the Nurse can heal any physical wounds of others occupying the same dream level as them, keeping them going and preventing dreamers from being killed, and therefore woken up. Or worse. Rumors have flown by about a certain Nurse that can retrieve dreamers from the surreal dreamscapes of Limbo.
File:///C:/THE PRAGMATIST.STATUS0/2 CLOSED.A successful heist has its fair share of moving parts, but not all dreamers are created equal, and the act of dreamsharing is not always violent or chaotic. However, a subject's subconscious can become a dangerous field for dreamers to face once they are detected and determined a threat, which is why the team will need the Pragmatists. Two individuals with formal combat training, prowess, knowledge of firearms, and tasked with keeping the team going and keeping them alive. Not only that, but the Pragmatist can also be considered the realist of the group - they are the only dreamers with the acute ability to identify a Shade. Without their keen eye, the Kuznetsov job would be in vain.
- 04File:///C:/HELLO & RULES.Hello and welcome to Ouroboros, a cerebral dreamsharing heist roleplay inspired directly by Inception and Ocean's Eleven! This is a reboot - some of our original group remains, but we're looking to start brand new and are looking for 4-6 new peeps to join us! Please note that some roles are closed to reserve for our existing members, but we still have some essential roles open!
Nearly all lore has been sourced from Inception (2010), but we're playing it fast and loose here, and it is not a requirement to have watched either movie to join. I'll soon be posting a lore page as well to further explain dreamsharing and the industry. For now, if this piques your interest please be sure to read the rules, and express your interest down below! Thanks for reading!
001.As always, please follow all RPN rules. Being kind, courteous, and respectful helps us make a great group roleplay together. Please be aware this roleplay will include: various themes of violence, psychological trauma, and death. Do know that trigger warnings will happily be enforced to ensure the comfort of our fellow players.
002.Age requirement. This roleplay is strictly 18+. No hate to the younger writers here, as y'all are crazy talented, but I am an adult and I would prefer to write with other adults! Please respect this rule, thank you.
003.Literacy. Please know that literacy is a must! This will be what most would consider a "literate to advanced" roleplay, where I expect good grammar, literacy, engaging writing, and 2-3 paragraph replies. I'm not super harsh on this rule, I understand inspiration comes and go in waves, so I don't expect walls of purple prose. As long as we keep things fun and moving along, I'm happy. No one-liner replies.004.Activity. Please understand this likely won't be a fast-paced, rapid fire reply style roleplay. Life gets in the way, and the holidays are coming up. Once the roleplay has started, please be able to post at least once a week, but also keep in mind I'd really like folks who are happy to chat OOC and contribute to plot discussions and such!005.Joining. This is not first come first served! If enough interest is garnered, there will be an application process, and once applications close I'll be considering which characters will fit best for this plot. Please only use realistic face claims/reference images for your characters, or feel free to opt for a written description. Codes are not required, and FCs are not required as well, but encouraged!006.Discord. Please know that a Discord server will be made once the cast is chosen. Personally, I find it really great to have a server for easy OOC chatting and convenient plotting, and our server will involve bots such as Tupperbot and other integrations to help shape our story. Be aware of this if you’re interested in joining!
