Sailing Away

Flying back from Diamond Refuge, Narrante sees the Talonlord and High Ambassador of Diamond Refuge, Qietias Jilias, standing at the bow of the airship rapidly approaching Icehold. She had been looking down at the landscape for quite some time. “So what do you think of the changes to Icehold Captain Narrante,†asks the Dragon-Blooded ambassador neutrally. “From what I have been told, there have been a great number of changes within Icehold.â€

Praying for Information

After several hours of prayers and rituals, periodically highlighted by examples of martial prowess and bravery to attract the Falcon of Glory’s attention, suddenly there is a thunderclap and the screech of a falcon. Before you stands muscular, bronze skinned man wearing a falcon mask, the God of Northern Armies and Champions stands before you. And he does not appear happy. Even only being able to see the god’s eyes and lower face it is clear the god’s face is a face of rage. “WHERE ARE MY CHILDREN,†roars out Nasamara like a man willing to tear down the entire manse to get what he wants.

OOC
To help get things jump started, we will get to the point where Narrante already has the ambassador and her team on her airship, and the summoning of the Northern War god Nasamara. If you guys want any specific NPCs to be where you are, feel free to mention them. Such as if you want Horizon and Maiden on hand to meet their father when you summon him. [OOC]
Anoké Jandro - Manse Meeting Room

Anoké leans back in his chair, eyes wide with surprise as Nasamara appears. He wasn't sure what sort of entrance he'd been expecting, but this one was louder and brighter than he was used to. Once he recovers, he stands, moving beneath the large statue of his First Age incarnation.

"There," Anoké answers Nasamara, pointing to the sides of the table where both the raven gods stand. "You're more connected," he says, skipping right to the heart of the matter, "so I'm hoping you can tell us just what's happened up there." He jerks a thumb towards the ceiling for emphasis.

Narrante

Captain Narrante rarely felt in better spirits these days than when she was aboard the Nimbus, and it showed freely on the young woman's face. The troubles of the world were far below her, and she was master of her fate. There were few troubles in Creation she couldn't overcome or outrun. This fine day, however, she wasn't at the helm; some of her crew could handle the ship quite well. Unperturbed by the ambassador's question when she approached, Narrante leaned against the railing comfortably, as if she were not a step away from a deadly drop.

"I wouldn't know," she replied pleasantly, brown hair fluttering faintly with the wind where it wasn't secured by her hat. "I wasn't around at the beginning of them all, but from what I can tell, the city's never been in better shape. Plenty of changes, I suppose, but it keeps things interesting. Such is the influence of the Exalted, I'd wager," she mused, glancing in the distance toward the city. It would be a while yet before it was in view. "To tell you the truth, there's nowhere I'd rather live at the moment." Her grin was wide.

"What's Diamond Refuge like, Ambassador? I steered clear of the place in the past," she noted, supposing she didn't need to explain why she wanted to avoid a city run by the Dragon-Blooded. Her Airtongue had improved steadily over the past year, and she had taken to speaking much more casually than she used to. Perhaps it was not best suited for a visiting dignitary, but Narrante didn't care. She had gradually left more and more of the constraints of her old life behind her, and manners were one such casualty. They could probably be retrieved if necessary, though.

Manse Meeting Room

Without looking at Anoke Nasamara swirls to face Horizon and Maiden. Embracing the both of them in a hug, and the two return the gesture. “My children,†says Nasamara distraughtly. “It is good to see that those corrupt bastards did not get their hands on you.†The Falcon of Glory lets go with his embrace, and put his two children at arm’s length. “I’m guessing that your Solar friends helped you on that matter?â€

“Little bit,†admits Horizon wryly.

Maiden rubs her arm with her hand uncomfortably. “The celestial lions were not thrill about their authority being questioned. Though they were even less thrilled about the idea of fighting a handful of Solars.â€

“Then I owe them my thanks,†says Nasamara as he looks up at the Exalted gathered and nods to them in thanks. “It seems I owe you all a debt also. Though we are far from weathering the worst of the blizzard.†He turns to face Anoke when he asks his question. “Politics, that’s what is going on in Yu Shan. It is always politics. Though I’m afraid the stakes are a little higher than normal. Both politically,†the war god puts a hand under his daughter jaw, and raises her head to smile at her with a mix of love and sadness, “and personally.â€

He let’s go of Maiden and turns to back to those gathered. He glowers as he speaks. “I suppose it should not be a surprise that the Solars are not universally loved in Heaven. Or the Lunars for that matter. Those that were…in support of the Usurpation and the changes it brought about have been the dominate faction in Yu Shan. Things have no more than simmered in Yu Shan since the Usurpation. But the sudden mass returns of so many Solars is threatening to bring everything to a boil, and those that do not like the idea of Solars to prominence are starting to act.â€

“It seems that they want to show any of the gods in Terrestrial Court that supporting the Solars isn’t in their best interest. And to get across that point they have decided to make an example.†Nasamara’s seem to almost catch on fire from the fire burning within him. “To do that, they have determined to murder my children. You see, certain parties have not been thrilled by my brother and I’s support of Lunars in the past. Never mind they are about the only ones who do anything to keep the threats of the Wyld at bay until they reach the core of civilization. They think anyone that supports any Lunar or Solars is a…problematic issue. Horizon and Maiden’s falling in our camp, and outright support of Lunars in the past has not exactly made them any more popular with that faction. But when my nefarious little children decided to throw in their lot with you, outright and fully, that seemed to have crossed a line with those opposing the Solars in Heaven.â€

“Voharun and I are still working on the details,†says Nasamara with frustration, “but it seems that faction has decided to scare all the other gods to walk the line by murdering my innocent children.†He turns to look at Horizon and Maiden and frowns. “Well, innocent enough. There’s a little too much trickster in the two of them for my liking, but nothing deserving to be executed over. They have secretly drummed up whatever charges they think they can make stick. My brother and I’s contacts caught wind of the scheme, though not in time to get down to Creation in time to beat out the celestial lions sent to seize Maiden and Horizon. They set up every bureaucratic roadblock they could to try and stop me from getting down here. All I could do was to try and get down here in time to do something, or at least find out what happened. I would not put it past those bastards to have killed my children ‘while resisting arrest’ or ‘while trying to escape.’ But thanks to all of you it did not come to that.â€

“Voharun is still in Yu Shan handling the political end of things,†admits the falcon gods in frustration. “Likely trying to figure out all the details, and calling in every favor we got to fight this battle. I think he insisted I go down to Creation so that I would not make a bloody mess of things in Yu Shan. Likely a literal one. I would not be surprised if they have stacked the deck against us. I’m willing to bet every judge on the Audit panel is probably on their payroll. And probably everyone else besides. They would not do something this bold unless they were sure they could get away with this. They want to set a precedent that they can come down and knock anyone they don’t like down if they are a little too open in their support of any Solar that happens to show up in their neighborhood.â€

Airship Nimbus

“It’s home,†says the ambassador shortly. Staring out at the approaching Icehold. “It is strong, discipline, and somber. Everyone has a place in Diamond Refuge where they can contribute to the whole. It has history in its bone. A thousand glories to its name, and a legacy to live up to.â€

She turns to look Narrante in the eyes. Narrante gets the sense the woman is studying her. “And hat do you think about the possibility of an alliance between Icehold and Diamond Refuge captain? Surely you must have a opinion on the matter to race back and forth so quickly.â€

Re: So Many Things, So Little Time

Narrante

The Night caste listened with genuine interest. It was always worth knowing more about friends, and especially worth knowing more about enemies. From the Talonlord's description, though, she didn't feel like she had missed much by avoiding the place.

Under the woman's scrutiny, the airship captain refused to squirm. Her comment brought a sudden laugh from Narrante. "I think you give me too much credit, my lady," she replied comfortably, leaning back against the railing and crossing her arms over the chest of her blue coat. "I would feel irresponsible trying to advise you on such matters. I am as dedicated to dealing with the Harbinger as any you will find, but I know not of diplomacy." However, there was a pause then, and she was momentarily distant. When she spoke again, it was without some of that jovial tone that had come so easily before.

"We all feel the same at the moment, though. We are trying to protect our homes. Perhaps, if both parties understand this..." She trailed off, before shaking away that musing. It did not suit her, nor did thinking out loud. "My opinions make little difference here. I raced to Diamond Refuge because I could, as much as to expedite matters for Icehold. As soon as we have returned, I shall be off again. Any excuse to take to the skies suits me fine," she added, only that last bit showing a hint of that grin again.

Re: So Many Things, So Little Time

Airship Nimbus

“You seem to be awfully quick about leaving your so called home,†notes the ambassador neutrally. “At least for myself, leaving home so often weighs heavily. But perhaps you do not have the same ties of family and tradition to keep you where you are.â€

Jilias points out over the city of Icehold. “I do not suppose you could fly a pass or two over the city itself? It is a rare opportunity to see a city from the air, and I would like to get a measure of the city that would be our ally.†She smiles lightly as she she studies the city from afar. “The best way to gauge how things change are to see those changes for yourself.â€

Anoké Jandro - Manse Meeting Room

Covering his face with his hand, Anoké lets out a deep sigh. "I should have figured," he mutters to himself. "Of course they wouldn't like change, even if it is for the better."

Anoké begins to pace the circumference of the room, favoring glances towards the assembled deities as he speaks. "This isn't a problem," he says. "I assumed we'd eventually need to make an appearance in Heaven, but I thought we'd be able to set those terms. Nasamara, knowing what I am, and having an better idea of divine precedent than I do, what are the odds of your children leaving alive if I claim them as part of my entourage? I... know, somehow, that there are pacts in place protecting myself and my companions there, but I'm not sure how thorough they are."

Re: So Many Things, So Little Time

Manse Meeting Room

“There are always those who feel they are better off as things are, and some of them are likely right,†says Nasamara with no humor and fighting down a snarl. “Never mind they do not have to deal with Creation being one Wyld invasion away from losing an entire Direction. But that’s not the immediate issue.â€

The Falcon of Glory looks at Anoke levelly. “I am going to disagree with you about this being a problem. It is one, on a number of levels. For one,†he says while pointing at Anoke. “I’m going to tell you honestly that I am not going to be thrilled, as the god of war of the North, if my children happen to die because they decided to support you.†Nasamara lowers his finger, his voice carrying the vitriol of a father whose children are threatened. “Perhaps you are confident in your abilities to deal with the situation, but I will not see this taken lightly.â€

Nasamara listens to what Anoke is thinking while tapping an impatient finger on a table. “It would not work,†says the god flatly. “To summarize about a thousand pages of legality, when you enter Heaven, you are submitting to its laws, its presidents, and its traditions. If you bring someone to Yu Shan with the intention of having them go to an Audit, then you are acknowledging the legal authority of the Auditing process. Thus you are submitting to whatever happens in the Auditing process. Both you and those in your entourage. Your diplomatic immunities cannot be used to circumvent punishment. It has been tried by Solars too clever by half in the past.â€

“I should warn you that Audits are one part trial, one part theater, and one part social occasion,†says Nasamara cautiously. “More goes into these then just the Audit itself. Many gods see the Audits as a type of recreation,†he says with pursed lips. “Many like to see other gods like to see others sweat, others like the gossip the airing of others dirty laundry provides, and some just take delight in the process itself. There are a number of social events that surround such things, and given the current corrupt nature of Yu Shan, bribes that need to be paid unless you want to go into a courtroom with nothing but enemies.†Nasamara’s fingers start to grate against the table hard enough to ruin its finish. “Many are considering this to be quite possibly the trial of the century, if not millennium given the nature of the charges, who is involved, and the president it could set.â€

Nasamara growls as he continues. “This is one of the things I will have to double check with my brother in good time, but I have a feeling our enemies would love for all of you to remain down here until the last minute. They could spin that to the other spirits that you are all arrogant and do not care about the Yu Shan, and its centrality to things. And thus refusing to recognize their own importance. It also allows them to stack the odds againstus as much as possible without your interference.â€

Re: So Many Things, So Little Time

Narrante

The Night caste wondered briefly if she was saying too much. If they wanted to be allies, though, she supposed it was worthwhile to be friendly. The ambassador's controlled tones were very different from her own, even if she tried to watch what she said. She did wonder about the woman's words, though. Her ties to Icehold were perhaps weak if she was so eager to leave. Perhaps a home is a place to come back to as much as a place to remain, she considered silently, but broke away from that train of thought as the Talonlord spoke again.

"Certainly; it is quite a sight," she agreed. "I'll be at the controls; tell me when you've seen enough," she informed as the city came into view in the distance. She walked back along the deck and up the stairs to the proud resting place of the helm and its magitech control system. Bars and buttons and guages of bronze, orichalcum, and other precious metals gleamed in the sunlight. The Nimbus banked gently as it approached the city, ready to circle around and give the Talonlord an eyeful.

Re: So Many Things, So Little Time

Anoké Jandro - Manse Meeting Room

"Don't give me that look," Anoké warns. "Your children recklessly posed the offer to me, not the other way around. But," and Anoké's eyes narrow, "I want to make this perfectly clear: if I have to kill their way out of Heaven when this is over, I will. We do not offer our friends and allies up as sacrifices, and I won't tolerate an injustice like this." His eyes dart over to Maiden and Horizon. "They've earned better than that.

"Besides," Anoké continues, suddenly casual, "if we let Heaven take them it shows that we don't protect our associates, which I think sends a worse message than fighting our way out does.

Finishing another circuit of the table, Anoké takes his seat. He folds his arms on the tabletop. "This is not a problem at all. They've given us an audience, a system to expose, and a chance to promote our agenda." He pauses to give a devious little smile. "Not the wisest thing, all things considered. But I need your help and the help of any you know of who supports us.

"I need more than just my circle. I need representatives from every major Chosen group we can muster. The Bear, the Bull, the Shark, the Tiger. You've all indicated you've had experience with the Silver Pact, so any among them who would be sympathetic to our situation. Gods you know either believe in what we are doing or at least disapprove of this farce. What enlightened Ptrerok we have, perhaps even some of Refuge's Dragon-Blooded, assuming we don't need to declare war with them soon.

"I expect many to be reluctant, but I expect they'd be willing to send members of their Circles once it's made clear that the outcome of this will likely determine whether they will be able to continue to act without harassment from Yu-Shan, and that this is also a chance to promote themselves in Heaven. The Silver Pact may be harder, but this is an attempt on the lives of two gods who stood strong against what is effectively a Wyld incursion, and who helped put one of their most tortured Lunars to rest; this implies several things about their stewardship that I suspect they will not like. As for the gods..." Anoké shrugs. "Beyond the Gods of the Hunt, I know few by name who would be willing to support us. I trust you and Voharun to have a better grasp of that. I'd hope that the fact that the charges question the judgement of the Unconquered Sun would irritate some, but I don't know the climate there.

"If we appear strong and united across Creation and Heaven, our complaints and arguments will have more legitimacy. When this audit happens, I need as many sympathetic or supporting bodies standing with or watching us." Anoké leans forward, steepling his fingers. "If this is about appearances, about showing Heaven that they can do what they will, they will have a hard time refusing oaths of truth with the eyes of the universe on them."

Anoké leans back. "Beyond networking, I need your help with one last thing, if you can manage it. We have a month, and it's best we arrive early so we can see what we can stir up before the audit. While I'm sure some of these possible allies can travel far in a short while, it's not reliable, and it would take too long for the Fulcrum to collect them. If you have any ideas on how we can quickly get them here or to Yu-Shan prior to the event, I'd be grateful."

Re: So Many Things, So Little Time

Emerging from the shadowed corridor Inguz spoke in an even and low tone,

"From what I've seen of my dealings with them, the Silver Pact as a whole won't lend much aid."

As the dancing firelight lands on Inguz's pale skin his moonsilver tattoos are illuminated, giving some weight to his words,

"You may get a smattering of young idealists, but the Elders are entrenched, and fear Yu-Shan."

the tight look on his face relaxes as he continues,

"It wouldn't hurt to try though. I don't mean to be so grave; I bring enough bad news already."

Re: So Many Things, So Little Time

Manse Meeting Room

Nasamara rubs his chin as he thinks over what Anoke just suggested. “You know, this plan might make a great number of people unhappy. Having this many Exalted show up at Yu Shan’s front door is going to make more then a few gods uncomfortable. Hmm, plus this is not going to be easy to put together. I and my contacts can certainly talk with a number of other gods, in fact I was planning on doing that anyways.â€

“As far as the Lunars go, they could be tricky,†says Horizon cautiously. “As Inguz said, most of them, or at least the Elders are quite entrenched, and not willing to act quite so openly in Heavenâ€

Maiden rises her finger as though to suggest something. “Well there is our sister, Inevitable Tide.†She turns to look at the others. “She is not as old as any of the Elders from the First Age, but she does pretty much control the bottom of the White Sea. Though she can be a prickly sort, and be…difficult.â€

“Yea, she’s already getting ancy feat about all your Solars returning all of a sudden,†admits Horizon with a shrug. “Still, as probably the most influential Lunar in the region, you are probably going to have to meet her eventually. We can of course show you where she lives.â€

Nasamara hums deeply as he puts on a contemplative frown. “As for the other more influential Solars. I cannot say how they will interact with you.†He motions a thumb to Maiden and Horizon. “I know those two know a little bit a sorcery that does allow them to contact individuals anywhere in Creation. So that might be useful to you. As for travel arrangements…†Nasamara stops and thinks, as though considering options and their validity. “It might be possible for everyone to go to the Yu Shan gates. Travel through Heaven is significantly faster then on Creation. Though there are several bureaucratic issues with trying that that would have to be worked through. We could also use that as a means to spread messages. Though there are security issues with sending messages in such a way. Otherwise, those individuals are likely to have their own means, or will quickly be able to obtain their own ways, to travel to wherever they need to get to in Creation.â€

“Though, I think there might be on major problem,†says Nasamara wearily. “One being convincing everyone to go to the location you want. Exalted have a notorious tendency of being…stubborn. Get all that power, influence, and wealth in your heads, and mortals start to think everything should always go their way no matter what. Even when dealing with their fellows.â€

Anoké Jandro - Manse Meeting Room

Besides a deep sigh and rolling his eyes, Anoké doesn't react to Inguz's appearance. By now he's gotten used to people trying to appear mysteriously around him or arrive suddenly or try hiding in plain sight, and he's beginning to long for the days when people knew to knock, or at least announce themselves. Throwing a wave over his shoulder, he says "welcome. Make yourself at home. Since my friends apparently know you, I won't try to kill you on the premise of being a spy or an assassin or a rude intruder.

"I don't expect the Silver Pact as a whole to throw in. But you've all made it clear that it is a large, loose association, and each member has their own opinion. I expect some are going to bite at the chance to see Heaven, or find their counterparts, or maybe because they realize Heaven's trying to prosecute and murder two gods for making a stand against a Wyld-warped god who was leading Wyld mutants. It doesn't matter why anyone attends, just that they do.

"I don't expect every Chosen to drop what they're doing and rush to our sides. But I suspect the major ones, the ones that have survived long enough for their legends to reach here, are probably going to recognize their stake in this--and those that don't, well, I suspect they're smart enough to realize it once it's explained to them. In any case, even the ones that don't may be willing to send a representative anyway. Even without the audit or the show, setting foot in Heaven opens a lot of possible doors.

"As far as communication and travel though," Anoké begins, looking relieved, "I'm glad to hear that. I'll dictate a missive shortly, if you two-" he nods towards Maiden and Horizon "-don't mind reading it. Then we'll wait and see who has the means to contact us, or who has the means to travel on their own." A proud smirk crosses his face. "These are kin, so I wouldn't dare underestimate them. Those that can't make the trip or we don't hear from, we'll inform of a time that someone will be coming to get them, bearing a leopard banner, if they want to attend.

"And if you run into bureaucratic issues of that," Anoké shrugs, "just bring me along. From what I feel, it's what I'm good for."

Re: So Many Things, So Little Time

Airship Nimbus

Qietias Jilias looks down at Icehold, and see the changes that have happened to it. The new pyramids dedicated to their gods, the Aerie, and imported fortifications and docks, and everything else in the city. “I see a great deal has changed in Icehold,†says Jilias grudgingly. And with a hint of fear and awe. After a few minutes looking down at the city she turns to Narrante with a stony stare. “I would like to go down now, and meet with whoever your representatives are. We obviously have a great deal to talk about.â€

Manse Meeting Room

Maiden nods at what Anoke says. “As far as the Silver Pact goes, we can at least take you to Inevitable Tide. A face to face meeting might make the best impression with her. She would not take well to the idea of being…summoned.â€

“Once you are done with your note we can pass it on,†says Horizon helpfully. “Can’t guarantee if, when, or how they will respond, but we can cover the sending portion.â€

“Is there anything else you want to cover,†says Nasamara with a hint of impatience. “There is a great deal that needs to be done.â€

The door to the manse meeting room slowly opens and one of the servants in the manse pokes his head inside. Looking more than nervous at being in the presence of so many distinguished individuals. “Um…I’m sorry to interrupt. But the Nimbus, um, has just arrived in Icehold, and looks like i-it will be landing in the city soon. I-i thught you would want to know.â€

Anoké Jandro - Manse Meeting Room

Anoké raises a finger. "Just one thing, Nasamara. A small favor." Standing, Anoké smooths down his clothes and adjusts his vestment-cape.

"I would be grateful if you'd deign to be seen talking with me. Pleasantly." Anoké smiles up at the regional war god. "You don't have to, of course. But I think being seen on good terms with one of the overseers of war in the area would go a long way in averting hostility--hostility which we might not be able to survive, something which would mean bad things for everyone in this room." His eyes briefly dart to Maiden and Horizon.

"Not that I'm advocating you play favorites," Anoké defends. "Only that we give the impression that you might. I wouldn't want to give Heaven more ammunition. And personally, I prefer everything and everyone doing what they are meant to do."

Re: So Many Things, So Little Time

Narrante

The Night caste made no comment on the fact the Talonlord was clearly irked, offering only a merry affirmative before she headed back to the controls. The Nimbus relaxedly sank down into one of the clearer courtyards near the Duke's palace, as was often the case for its docking. The ship usually lingered near the palace when Narrante was in the city, comfortably assured that none could steal it with the device attuned to her. The gangway was lowered to provide easy exit, and Narrante cheerily escorted Jilias from the vessel. "It was a pleasure, High Ambassador, but we shall be parting ways soon. Icehold's finest captain is in high demand these days," she boasted. "If I return in time, perhaps I can see you to your home."

Re: So Many Things, So Little Time

Airship Nimbus

The Ambassador nods and smiles to Narrante. “Very well captain. Thank you for the safe and speedy journey. I hope your journeys remain the same to wherever you are going.†The Ambassador and her escorts disembark from the ship to meet the Icehold guards. Ready to meet whoever is to greet them in the city.

OOC
Was there anything else Narrante wanted to do at this point? [OOC] Manse Meeting Room Nasamara’s eyes narrow unpleasantly for second before he smiles warmly. He places a friendly hand on Anoke’s shoulder, and squeezes affectionately. Affectionately except for the definitely inhuman strength of that grip. “I suppose we could talk about a few sweet nothings for a few minutes,†says the war god with a little bit of an edge than would be necessary for a friendly chat. “So what would you like to talk about?†------------------------------ After about half an hour everyone in the room gets the word that the Ambassador has arrived to meet them. High Ambassador of Diamond Refuge, Qietias Jilias is escorted into the meeting room, and after all the pomp and ceremony is completed, Jilias nods politely to those gathered. “A pleasure to meet with all of you. I know we have a great deal to talk about.†Her gaze turns to Nasamara, and she bows to the war god respectfully. “I was not aware that the revered Nasamara would be with us today. Will he be here for our meeting alo?â€

Re: So Many Things, So Little Time

Anoké Jandro

Anoké is laughing softly as Jillias enters, and raises a finger in the near-universal symbol for 'one second.' "Anyway," he says to Nasamara "the bone-chewer gives this speech about how much of a monster he is. And, well, you know the rest. You and Voharun swoop in the next day and tell us that the Sun's declared them enemies of Creation." He smacks a palm into his fist, grinning ear-to-ear. "Bam. Dead god. So I guess they've got something to take pride in there."

Seemingly done with his reminiscing, Anoké turns his attention to the ambassador. "Sorry about that. Just reminiscing. Not unless he wants to, but I think we've just used up all his free time." He gives Nasamara an apologetic look. "Sorry if I did. You know how it is with good company."

Re: So Many Things, So Little Time

Manse Meeting Room

Nasamara smiles and nods at the two Exalted. “I must really get going anyway. Some important business has come up, and it must really be attended to. I wish that your meeting is a success. I fear that Harbinger and his allies are nothing but trouble for Creation. But I leave that matter up to all of you.†With that Nasamara morphs into a golden falcon, and dematerializes out of sight.

Seeing Nasamara leave, the Ambassador turns back to Anoke. Her form and face stiff, and not betraying any emotion. “So shall we go through pleasantries ourselves, or shall we get down to business. I’m sure there is plenty we can talk about.â€

Anoké Jandro

"I couldn't agree more, ambassador," Anoké says as he rises from his seat, still wearing a wide grin. "Though you're lucky--in this case, business is pleasure. You need to be brought up to speed on the changes around here, and I think the best way to do that is to give you a guided tour." He bows with a flourish, and heads for the exit, trusting her to follow.

'I'll be sure to give you something to report to your superiors,' he thinks to himself. If half of what he's been told by his allies is true, she's probably there to gather intelligence as much as anything, and he doesn't want her leaving short of that.

* * *

"From what I've been told, it's moved by solidified light," Anoké explains as he and Jillias ride one of the manse's sunburst-shaped elevators to the ground floor. "I don't really understand it, but the one who built it does, and she knew her stuff.

"Within these walls lies not only our major means of production--capable of producing whatever we set it to in great numbers--but also the system which regulates the temperature and comfort levels of the city. Thanks to this, assuming we rotate crops appropriately, we can plant and harvest year-round, and produce whatever advanced equipment we might need to speed up this process." As the elevator comes to a stop, he favors the ambassador with a small smile. "Lately we've considered loaning some of our surplus to some of the less-developed communities in the area."

* * *

"Literacy," Anoké says, walking through new streets and past new buildings, all much smoother and shinier than the dwellings and small roads they had replaced. The detour was deliberate, a chance to show off just how much had been reconstructed since a year ago. "Our education program has yet to begin in earnest, but we have made certain that the people at least have the opportunity to learn to read."

The Eclipse and the Dragon-Blooded take a turn down a side street, where a number of citizens are carefully regarding a poster. It depicts a golden figure studiously contemplating an unmarked novel. In bright letters, it reads "Your Future Is In Your Hands."

"And by that," Anoké concludes, "until we can help them, we hope they would have the chance to teach themselves."

As they walk through the farmland and small villages outside the wall, through the newly-constructed roads, Anoké points out the various features of the changed countryside.

"Most of these places are us planning ahead. Given our sudden prosperity, as well as our methods, we expect to see a substantial increase in our population over the next several decades. For now, though, the houses with the leopard marks," he gestures to a set of villas, "are set aside as lodging for Icewalkers bringing food for trade.

"Yes, we are using slave labor to make them, however," he defends, "you likely know my kind can enforce sworns oaths--even those made by myself. By year's end they are free, and citizens, should they desire it. I don't particularly like it, but I don't expect as many who buy from the Guild to be as..." Anoké pauses, and moistens his lips. "As human in their treatment. I want them to have a chance for something better."

Leaving that unpleasant topic behind, Anoké points to several circling specks against the clouds, making sure Jillias's eyes follow his hand. "There are pterok. You can't see it from here, but we've constructed a training area for them. I wouldn't have believed it two years ago, but evidently they're capable of sapience, with the proper incentives. I've been told tales of a time when they worked with us. I faintly remember something like that. It's hard to explain to someone who only remembers their own life," he explains, a distant look on his face, "but I feel... like we owe it to them. To give them the chance to rebuild."

On the way back to the city proper, Anoké makes sure that they pass by a barracks. The soldiers are currently drilling, armored in shining breastplates, raising perfectly-weighted spears. Some are sparring, their mock-duels bordering on what would be dangerous for the average man.

To that sight, Anoké says nothing, preferring to let the image speak for itself.

Before they enter the gates, he also takes a moment to use his bare hands to break apart quarried stone for further extensions to the road. To this, he lets his dry brow and even breaths say everything.

"One of our marketplaces," Anoké gestures to the collections of awnings, tents, and businesses lining the road. They're thrown together haphazardly and without regard for whether the aesthetics match, stalls thrown up overnight down one of the more well-traveled streets of the city. "Thanks to certain deals and an aggressive trade strategy, we've been able to import a number of goods rarely seen in this Direction." To punctuate this statement, he waves to a vendor selling spider silk.

As the sun drifts across the horizon, a sudden number of people drop to their knees, bowing their heads in the direction of its passage. "It's a prayer ritual," Anoké explains it to the ambassador. "It honors the sun. It's not mandatory, of course, but, well, our victory over the Varajtul, their warlord, their Wyld Mother, and their god was done with the Sun's blessing." He shrugs. "I'm observant myself, but it'd be rude of me to abandon you like that, even for a few minutes."

Anoké leaves out how some of the whispered prayers are thanking the Sun for helping to vanquish the Yozi plague from their city. They're loud enough, he thinks, that Qietias should be able to hear them herself.

Evening is beginning to set in as Anoké concludes his tour of the city, and as he and Qietias ride the manse's lift to its peak section, to the room he calls his office. It's far from large, but big enough to house his marble desk, several chairs, and a folding partition behind which is a moderately-sized bed alongside a cabinet for food and drink.

After pulling out a chair for Qietias, Anoké takes a seat behind his desk, beneath a painting depicting Glorious Blessed Horizon's victory over the god of the Varajtul. Fading light streams through the round window at the edge of the room, casting long shadows and coloring the rest of the room with gold.

"So, ambassador," the Eclipse begins, folding his arms across the tabletop as he smiles amicably, "now that you've seen the state of affairs in Icehold, what would you like to address first?"

Taken off guard by the aloofness of the Solar, Inguz doesn't know how to react. Not that he was expecting awe and fanfare, or to make any impression, he just wanted to deliver his news at a proper time. He seems to have misjudged that time.

In the moment it takes him to recover, the moment passes. Inguz is not cut out for such a social atmosphere. Seeing the import of the Solars work, he leaves when ignored, and seeks someone else's time.

No biggie, just moving on to the other thread.

Qietias sites down in the offered chair gracefully. She looks at Anoke, and lays her arms on the table. She leans forward, and speaks carefully as though measuring her words. “There is certainly a lot we could cover. Isn’t there,†she asks with a half hearted smile. “So how about we cut to one of the…trickier questions we are going to have to go over if we are honest with each other?â€

“You seem to be a smart enough fellow, so I’m sure you can figure out the angle I and many of my people are coming from,†says the Terrestrial as she leans back into her chair. “Moving beyond the whole Anathema issue, many in the General’s Council have argued that we would merely be trading one Anathema threat for another, and may even give you a leg up in your efforts to destroy us next.â€

She taps a finger on the table. “Granted, I see a few issues with those arguments. But there are a couple of issues that will need to be addressed. At least based on our own intelligence, there are a few disturbing facts. Namely, it has come to our attention that you general, or Hearthwarden if we want to go with the title he has claimed for himself, is the brother of Harbinger. Naturally this fact leads to a number of questions. More than a few have suggested that the two of them might be working together in some kind of plot to conquer the region, and this proposed alliance to Diamond Refuge is merely a ploy in some overarching plan.â€

“So what do you have to say,†she says as she puts a finger on her lip inquisitively.

Anoké Jandro

While he manages to suppress a scowl at the implications of Diamond Refuge's intelligence--specifically that they had a way of learning of Icehold's affairs--Anoké does frown at the use of the word 'Anathema.' "First of all, Jillias," he says, "I would be grateful if you didn't use that word referring to us.

"As for the Harbinger and his connection to us.... Besides how his proudly-worn title casts doubt on how trustworthy he is, we have certain philosophical differences which will inevitably lead us to conflict. He and his allies bring the worship of death, of decay and specters. More tellingly, yesterday he sent us a messenger offering us a truce until such time as he had conquered you and yours." Anoké waves a hand dismissively. "Then we'd have a grand battle or something afterwards. If you want absolute proof I can drag the Hearthwarden up here and swear him to truth, but I doubt you'd need that. You've seen the way we've transformed this place, the veneration for the Sun and the gods, the trade deals, the chance for people to follow their own fates, all of it. Do you really believe any of this could be connected to that brutal lunatic?

"To lay your other fears to rest," he continues, "why in the Sun's true name would anyone want to destroy you? Diamond Refuge is one of the premiere regional powers, backed by Exalted soldiers and uncommon weapons. Diamond Refuge is a commodity, Ambassador, one which every expanding power is going to want. Right now, your city--and by extension, the Diamond Confederacy--is certain to be in the sights of everyone who approaches this side of the mountains." Anoké sits up straight, his expression serious.

"You're already under assault by the Harbinger. But say you claim victory against him. Eventually the Bull of the North will cross the mountains, and given his history I suspect he will want to see you added to his territory. Do you think you could weather two assaults by 'Anathema?' Or how about the Realm? You could ask them for assistance, but I doubt they'd come, given their personal issues and history with the Bull. And even if they did, what do you think they'd be likely to send: a token gesture which gives you little aid, or in enough force to hold you once the dust settles? Barring greater intervention, from a military standpoint you are finished. You can't fight an entire Direction on your own and win.

"However," he quickly says, raising a finger pointedly, "when might fails, diplomacy prevails. We are willing to ally with you to fend off and crush the Harbinger, and I suspect the Bull won't be as prone to assault a place affiliated with more like him--especially if those same people had already engaged him in talks of cooperation. And there are other benefits, as you can probably guess from seeing what we've managed to accomplish in a single year.

"That is, if you think the Refuge would be willing to negotiate," he finishes. Leaning against his armrest, Anoké props up his head in his hand.

“It was not my intention to offend you,†say Jilias Qietias apologetically over referring to him as Anathema. “That’s just the general terms used by most for your kind, and it is what the General’s Council refers to the matter. And I wanted to convey that to you.â€

She leans back in her chair as she stares seriously at Anoke. “I personally do not see it as likely that you are affiliated with that monster. Unless there are plans in motion that just break credibility. From everything I have seen your methods are completely different than that of Harbinger’s.â€

Jilias sighs frustratingly as she takes a moment to think over something. “I will have to agree with you that the world has become a considerably more dangerous place in the last few years, and change seems to be in the wind. In fact, that is what many on the General’s Council are concerned about with Icehold. A great deal has changed here, and some are worried about Icehold’s strength outstripping that of Diamond Refuge’s. Either here soon or eventually, and some see little reason to give a leg up to a potential rival in the future who may intend to stab us in the back once its immediate foes have been dispatched. As you have already showed me, you have done much in Icehold. Many would see that as a threat. We can struggle to build and maintain the simplest artifacts for ourselves, and maintain the Diamond Refuge manse. But in a year’s time you have made two fantastic manses, and have equipped your armies with superb weapons. Some would argue that the long term consequences of that trend would not be good for Diamond Refuge.â€

“Then there is the Realm,†she says with distaste, and gives a frown at the mention of the Realm. “Given its current…political climate, it is hard to say exactly how they are going to react to anything. It may be only a matter of time, either here soon or eventually when it gets its house in order before it turns its eyes this way once again. Some say that we should just go ahead and ask for their assistance, and think we can live out the consequences of that storm. Others worry that allying with Icehold, even if it were out of necessity would only draw the ire of the Realm, and once they do get their act together the Realm is going to make its displeasure known. The Realm could, in time, overwhelm Diamond Refuge. We have always known that, and the Scarlet Empress always chose not to act in such a way due to the fact that smashing Diamond Refuge would not have met her goals. At least for the cost it would have provoked. But if you change the equation by adding those they declare Anathema…†She shrugs noncommittally.

“As you can see, there are a number of factors we cannot predict at this point in time,†admits the Terrestrial ambassador. “There are many who do not think they can trust Icehold, they worry about the long term consequences of any proposed alliance, both in the regional power balance and in relationship to powers such as the Realm.â€

“So hat do you have to comment about those factors,†says Jilias
