A lot of people have been complaining about how "dark" the new site is. Personally, I find it too bright rather than too dark, but I've found it so through the last few updates and was given a user-side solution some time back. I use Chrome, so someone pointed me to the Stylish addon and someone else wrote me the code for it, and since that time my RpN has been a lovely shade of gray-purple instead of brilliant white. However, that purple doesn't mesh well with the new blue (which looks teal on my screen), so I fiddled around with colors until I found a new shade to work with.
Long story short (too late!), I offer #bcd7ea as a background color. It's not very dark, but it is a distinct blue, matching the existing blues, and breaks up individual sections nicely.
As an example, here's what my RpN looks like at the moment:
