The small village of Taeko, nestled in the eastern reaches of The Republic and precariously close to the contested border with the East Empire, lay beneath the gentle wash of twilight, its thatched roofs and narrow, winding paths wrapped in the soft glow of lanterns. It was a humble village, a place where the earth’s bounty and the toil of its beastkin inhabitants kept life simple, though often challenging. The architecture was modest yet charming, with wooden structures adorned by paper lanterns and bamboo fences. In this hour of celebration, Taeko’s typically quiet air was broken by the joyful voices and laughter of villagers who finally felt a fleeting peace.
A makeshift feast had been laid out, no grand banquet but an earnest display of hospitality: rice balls and fresh vegetables. The low but spirited notes of a bamboo flute added a lilting melody to the air as families and friends reunited, emotions spilling freely in embraces and tears. For now, fear had subsided, and hope had kindled in the hearts of Taeko’s people.
Katja had decided to leave the group to deal with yet another person from another world, not because she didn't want to help or she didn't care about the person that had just shown up, btu she was starting to freeze. Katja might not have the best record when it came to caring for herself , but even she was hard pressed to no listen to her body's need for heat in her soaked clothes that only felt like they were getting colder. She had meant to bathe a bit more and try to dry her clothes a bit more, but well Yukan coming and the whole thing with the other otherworlder had forced her to put her her clothe son in haste meaning she was lacking an unseen layer, though hopefully no one would notice. Still as she entered the village which actually had light, her clothes still dripping the music and cheer was another to warm her heart if not her bones. it was getting early, or later or something the party had started near midnight and it felt like it had been hours, but likely only one had passed at mac given she an Yukan had not exactly partaken in things and had been interrupted.
Walking through the streets towards the large bonfire that was still blazing away in the center of the village Katja did notice some odd looks, though she doubted it was because of the beast people disliking humans like before or because of her wet clothes. The dislike of humans was still likely there sadly, but for tonight at least it was cast to she side given it had been mostly humans that had saved their villagers and Katja had been lucky enough to help them out. Katja didn't know what could be the reason for people to smirk and then whisper to each other or seeming look her over, yes her clothing was a bit tighter than normal but they were all beast people they couldn't really look at her that way. That was at least what she assumed given most of the beast people here were radically different than humans so their sense of what looked good should be different in her mind. She was completely unaware that the rumors of her meeting with Yukan had gone from a talk to a lovers times alone, likewise she was unaware that people thought Yukan was with Okami or her or both, if she did then she would pity Yukan to be the center of such stranger rumors when he was clearly a man of honor who would not do such things. That the rumors might be insulting to her didn't matter she had no reputation to keep up here, no name to be known.
Finally reaching the center Katja took a seat on one of the benches that had been set up around the blazing bonfire and watched the blaze and the people somehow still dancing around the inferno. They moved a bit stiffly in rhythm with the beats of a large drum, it was far from the dances that Katja was used to seeing. Though this whole country seemed to be similar to the east and she mostly knew of western traditions, though east and west meant little in her world. Still it was nice to watch and the fire was hot enough that even from a distance Katja could feel herself warming up slowly. Katja found her hand wandering to her stomach over where she had been pierced, where the clothing was still torn and felt a twinge of something not regret or nostalgia, perhaps it was loss. These clothes had been something that she had only worn because of the benefits, but still she was attached to them, they had become something oddly important, one of the few links to her home. Now it was ruined and she didn't know if it could be repaired, it likely could but would it be the same? It had already lost it's power and now it was going to lose some of it's substance. She didn't know if she should get it repaired or perhaps get some new clothes, the labyrinth was gone so why should she wear what it gave her?
Katja thought back to her time at the monastery to the sisters and felt that she really could use them more than anything right now. She hated to admit it but that near death scrape might have shook her , made her doubt not god but herself. She was weak and while she seemingly helped she was still wondering if she really had. if she had had doubts before she always knew who to asked the sister superior, btu now she couldn't even ask someone similar. " sister i wish you were here " She sighed perhaps the only sullen looking person in the crowd as she sat alone at the bench. So much of her self had been tied into healing and now she was truly realizing how limited she was.
