1600s Europe

While reading Game of Thrones, I couldn't help wondering what period in our history best serves as a "true" game of thrones.

How would it feel to be the ruler of Spain in the late 1600s - her great wealth in gold and territories spanning the Americas? Or perhaps the Dutch, whose impressive navy allowed this small nation to dominate international trade? What about the ever-expansive Muslim banners knocking on Europe's doorstep? And of course the various complex bloodlines tying them all together.

These are some of the questions I've been asking myself over the past week. Such a deep history exists here that it seems nonsensical to use historical figures. Otherwise, no amount of fact-checking wiki pages will produce an accurate portrayal. There have to be some fictitious parts to this story.

The mechanics and "order of play" so to speak also need groundwork. That's where you come in. I don't want this RP to become too complicated, nor should there be a lack of interaction with other players. It can get boring reading after action reports detailing an entire country's troop numbers, how many cannon balls they have, etc. I'd rather see a letter by some general to another player addressing the state of his camp.

Anyway, I'm rambling! Leave comments on the idea and how we can improve/publish it as a nation builder.

What's up stranger?

I've never done a nation-building RP nor do I have interest in it, but I have an idea for you. You can have dual ICs. IC1 as the "moving" or "forward progress" posts and IC2 as the "static" or "boring information posts (Cannoballs numbers, position of troops, bloodlines)".

That way, either part is optional. If you're the kinda player to like detail-y things of Nation RPs, take yourself to IC2. If you're the kinda player that prefers the action aspect, your home is IC1.

You have the (stats? logistic numbers?) of a nation-builder RP, without it being in peoples' face.

Hope that helps some. Beyond that, I couldn't tell you anything else

That's so simple...yet so brilliant! I'm not typically a fan of multiple ICs, but this format makes sense. A co-GM would be preferred to carry part of the load because I honestly can't see myself managing everything. All in due time.

Definitely a Co-GM. I've seen many members enthusiastic about Nation-builders, so there should be plenty to pick from :5/5:

One more thing about mechanics: how would the passage of time work? I'd like this story to span several years since realistically empires aren't created and lost in just a few days. Trying not to rush characters' scenes is also important.

That's up to you and your players. As the GM, you really are the rule-setter. Whatever feels comfortable for you. If you say every post represents 1 month, then that's what it's going to be.
