This ten posts thing sounds really arbitrary. How effective is it? And on top of that, why ten? What's considered spamming? Creating the same thread over and over or just continuously posting?

Hey Azerinthus Azerinthus ! I'd say its pretty effective. It's meant to help keep spambots from sending stuff directly to users. I've never seen a spambot be around for long. Ten posts is just an easy requirement for actual new members to meet and is more than sufficient to keep spambots out of peoples PMs.

As for spamming, it's basically yeah just creating a bunch of meaningless content. So if you were to create more than one thread while the first is still on the first page of that forum section, that would be spam. Continuously posting on one thread, too, is considered spam (or also called flooding). Like it's always pretty obvious when people are just posting to get their post count up (usually literally saying "I'm just posting to meet the ten post requirement) when really we want people taking part in the site, y'know? You're allowed to bump threads, but the thread really should have already moved off of the first page of the forum and/or it's really encouraged that your new post is somehow adding to the topic of the thread. I think also posting completely off-topic from a thread can be considered spam? But just overall you can think of spamming as just posting for the sake of increasing your post count.

I hope that answers your question?

it does, but that's like...a lot of rules on what you can and can't do just so that you can get to the full potential you know? It's a little irritating, and I get the idea behind it to get people to participate, but that's also not exactly something you can force.

I mean, I don't really think it's a big problem, but also lmao it's been a longass time since I've been a new member. It is frustrating not being able to access everything immediately, but the biggest restriction really is just that you can't PM people right off the bat, and you can just ask other people to PM you instead. I also think that the spam rule really keeps the forums nice and tidy, which I can't really say for a lot of other sites. I do see a lot of people that are frustrated or confused by this when they first join but ???? I do think a lot of people just kind of... forget about it after the first day and everything is just fine after that. I think it also gives people a chance to get familiar with the rules which I know from experience that it isn't too uncommon to just join a site and not fuck with reading the rules LOL, but it's not too hard/unreasonable to comply with once you get used to it all imo!
