Nadia remembers little of the pleasant times in Russia, but she vividly remembers how cold it was. Her parents were an odd pairing, how they made it so far into their marriage would always be an universal mystery, but nonetheless, there was a spark for a while. Alexi was a renowned high councilmen with one of the upperclass covens in Russia. Heather, on the other hand, had spent the last four years running away from her possessive coven. She was free-spirited, outspoken, and that -- somehow -- captured Alexi's heart. They were married two years after meeting each other, and became a family a year afterwards. Nadia was always told she was the best thing that ever happened to them, that she was their purpose in life as parents. What she wasn't told was that she was unplanned, just like most things that happened with Alexi and Heather, but the new found parents took it in stride.

Alexi shortly lost his job as a councilman after his coven found out about his runaway wife and child. Heather was a stray, someone who didn't fit in with the world Alexi grew up in and Nadia was the byproduct of that. She, and her mother, were stain on the coven and they couldn't let that tarnish their reputation. Heather struggled to care for Alexi's feelings, she saw it as a chance for him be free with himself and explore the world, rather than be a stuck in the mud. To put it as nicely as possible, Alexi lost his shit. Nadia was only a toddler when fights began, verbal attacks laced with venom and regret. Heather blamed her husband for tying her down, capturing her in a golden cage, and Alexi blamed her for losing his job. What spark they had at the beginning, quickly sizzled out but they both wanted to be present parents for Nadia, or at least Alexi did.

At the age of eight, Nadia watched her parents argue from behind a crack of a door. Eyes wide as she tries to make out what they're saying, which isn't hard. She cheated, he was uncaring. Two hot-heads trying out burn each other. Alexi couldn't face Heather anymore, with one sweep and a phone call, Nadia left Russia like the remaining snowflakes of a snowstorm. Nadia's mother left her life as quickly as they left Russia, her daughter becoming a second thought as she disappeared into nothing. Alexi was determined to remove any inkling of his ex-wife that was left on his daughter, his heir, the future face of the Fitzpatrick bloodline. The now family of two moved to the heart of London, England, with the finest mentors and maids her father could afford. While Alexi had lost his position as councilman, he found a suitable place in the medicine industry. Nadia was left to herself and the spirits around her.

She could always sense a presence in the empty hallways of her new English home, handed down to her father after the death of his mother. The fashioned decor, priceless paintings hanging from the walls. Nadia could almost transport herself to the past through dress-ups and messy drawings, it didn't faze Alexi, who was too busy with his own work to fully care, until her early teens. A late bloomer with her powers, her grandmother predicted. Nadia had a connection to the afterlife, a trait her father assumed she shared with her mother. Nadia's father wasn't thrilled at the prospect, but nonetheless seeing his daughter blossom with magical talent still pleased him. Fourteen soon came around and through connections, Alexi pulled enough strings to earn his daughter a spot at Leopold Academy, the same academy he spent his high school years ages ago, and now, Nadia would be able to continue that tradition.

as reckless and as impulsive as she is, nadia still fears. the femme is terrified of what's in store for her after death, the life after everything turns to black. she's never been religious, despite being raised in a catholic household, but holds the idea of heaven and hell close. nadia is also terrified of the dark, or what lurks in the dark; demons, monsters, ghosts -- the most evil thing could be preying on her without anyone knowing, or it could just be reflection. at this point, nadia isn't quite sure what the difference is anymore. finally, loss is a big fear of her's, stemming from multiple events during her childhood which has left her wanting to keep any attachments away from her and those close to her even closer.

but then kiana found out. ivan couldn't completely abandon his warlock life, despite promises to himself. all it took was kiana arriving home earlier from work one day, by ten minutes. ten minutes to throw the family into chaos. she wasn't so much disgusted at his other-worldliness, more so the fact he chose to lie to her about it. and so she ran with winifred in tow at age six. they left ukraine, and moved back to kiana's home town -- los angeles, california, in the united states.

the pair did not live as comfortably, being on one income instead of two but it wasn't unbearable. two years passed and winnie began to show signs of the power passed on by her father; her mother couldn't help but feel afraid. kiana would spend longer at work, avoid coming home. sometimes going out to drink instead. a week after her tenth birthday, her mother was involved in a car crash and passed away on the scene.

ivan then moved to america so that winnie wouldn't have to be relocated again, though they did move into a considerably nicer home. he was colder than she remembered. distant. though he still showed a passion for his young girl's budding powers. but there would forever be a rift between the two, for winifred wasn't daft. and unfortunately, she chose to blame him so as to divert the blame she placed on herself for her mother's death.

ivan would manage to enrol winnie into leopold academy and there she would arguably, flourish. her abilities certainly would, though there is a discussion to be had if her character developed as successfully.

Catheryn does not remember her parents. As a matter of fact, she does not remember anything from before the age of four. She supposes it's her mind's way of protecting her from whatever had happened, but she'll probably never know now.

She's told that she'd been born in Korea, which is believable enough, since her fluency in her homeland's native tongue must have come from somewhere. But all Catheryn has ever known is the small, dreary English village in which she'd grown up. That, and Rialto.

Her twin brother is a constant. Oftentimes a constant annoyance, but a constant nonetheless. Catheryn loves him, in her own funny way, and he loves her too. Even though they're both horrible at showing it. He doesn't remember either, tells her that anything from before the year they'd turned four is a blur. She stops asking after a while.

Neither of them had shown any signs of magical ability until after they'd been enrolled in regular school. Rialto's had manifested first, probably a result of his propensity to claim five-fingered discounts at all the stores in the big city, whenever they'd go. Catheryn's had come afterwards, ebbing and flowing from her fingertips, much less showy and explosive than Rialto's had been.

In any case, it had been a stroke of luck that the kind, eldery couple who had adopted them knew enough about the magical world to transfer them to Leopold Academy. Catheryn had gone without complaint. School is school, and she'll do well no matter where she is.

Rialto, on the other hand, had put his foot down. He hadn't taken to formal education as well as Catheryn had, and would much rather pursue an apprenticeship in one of the shops downtown then go anywhere he'd need to be in uniform for. And so their paths had diverged there, but, if the constant stream of texts he sends her is of any indication, they'll walk the same road again, no matter if it's sooner or later.

Catheryn is always thinking, always searching for the outcome that benefits her the most. It's the only outcome she's interested in.

Biography​

Kazuki Hirano was born as the younger child to a lenient mother and a clumsy father. The first few months of his life were spent in Japan until his family moved to Canada for a higher-paying job offer. His brother, Goro, was older by five years and he quickly became Kaz's security blanket. Even his earliest memory involved following him around like a shadow. Goro was pleased to have a little brother and enjoyed spending time with him. They formed a close bond. When he entered preschool, Kaz was shy around his peers, but showed potential as an excellent student for his willingness to learn.

By the time he was six years old, he realized he could command fire, albeit by a small degree. He had inherited this rare talent from his late grandfather, who died long before he was born. The parents were ecstatic and celebrated this as a blessing. He became the golden child while his older brother—who didn't possess any magical capabilities—receded as an afterthought. Kaz was praised for nearly any achievement. His crayon drawings were pinned to the fridge and his father cooked dishes that he loved more often. Although Goro excelled in sports and did well academically, there was little to no acknowledgment for it.

As time went on, Goro slowly changed. He seldom smiled and would confine himself to his room after dinner. Whenever Kaz attempted a conversation with him, he replied with short, apathetic responses. It was as if the Goro he once knew had disappeared. One evening, their parents went out on a dinner date to celebrate their anniversary. Goro was appointed as the babysitter for eleven-year-old Kaz. Silent aggression had never filled the house more.

Kaz spent the first hour trying to bring back the old personality in his brother. The more he tried to do so, the more irritated Goro became. It wasn't until he finally snapped that he told him how he felt. He resented him for the unfairness that took place in the household. He blamed him for the borderline neglect inflicted onto him by their parents. Part of Kaz's subconscious had already known this and repressed it, but it shattered his heart to hear it from Goro.

In truth, Kaz didn't like all the attention; it was smothering. He felt pressured to be perfect. But he knew his brother had every right to be angry. The night dragged on, and yet their parents hadn't returned. Kaz was sent to his bedroom for curfew—however, he couldn't sleep—while Goro remained in the living room. He made several phone calls trying to reach them, but they were all unanswered. By midnight, there was a knock on the front door. Kaz sneaked out of his room and overheard a conversation from behind the bannister. A police officer had arrived.

There was a car accident. Daichi and Asuka Hirano had fallen victim to a drunk driver and died upon the impact of their crash while they were on their way home. It all felt unreal. Kaz didn't want to believe it. He cried throughout the funeral and Goro silently comforted him, but he knew there were tears on his face, too. Within the same week, they had to leave their home behind. Their aunt, Yui, took legal guardianship over the two boys and they moved into her lavish home in England. She was a charismatic woman who used to visit during the holidays. She loved her nephews dearly. Kaz had a difficult time adjusting to everything; he simply couldn't move past the death of his mother and father. His stress was hard to control, and consequently, so was his power.

Aunt Yui suggested a prestigious but hidden school where he would be able to hone his abilities—the same school his grandfather graduated from: Leopold Academy. Kaz reluctantly agreed to enroll. There, he found new friends, all with varying talents and personalities. As he bonded with them throughout the years, his relationship with Goro gradually improved. He's in his final year of school and things actually seem to be better. However, more and more students started to disappear from the campus, and now Leopold Academy is as mysterious as it first seemed.

noemi, having been very young, has a hard time remembering childhood in brazil. she can recall the vibrancy of brasília - the warmth, the color, the happiness. it was all incredibly blurry, but pleasant. she knew that a few months after turning seven, her mother and father decided to move the family up to london for a better work opportunity. her mother, ana, was a medical compliance coder and her father, charles, was a technical engineer. growing up in london was easy to become used to, as noemi had already known english as a second language.

ana and charles were a loving and nurturing couple. because they were both involved in science, they happily nurtured noemi's interests in oddities growing up. she had a specific infatuation with bugs - she would locate them, follow them quietly to their habitat, and stare at them for hours. her parents couldn't quite understand why their daughter was so obsessed, but they didn't mind. by the time noemi was an early teenager, the interest never fluttered out.

like a clichéd harry potter-like tale, noemi's first sign of magic came on her thirteenth birthday. her parents stared in disbelief at their daughter when the broken butterfly's wing that she had been frowning over for seven minutes had slowly mended itself. later that day after singing happy birthday and cutting the cake, ana and charles's fellow family members giggled at the odd story. noemi's parents were firm believers in science and the mathematically believable way of the world. the only person who seemed almost disturbed by the story was ana's sister, marisa. as months went by, marisa began to notice similar outbursts.

marisa was forever the black sheep of the family. a "hippie with a lack of morals," noemi's mother would say to her husband with a hushed tone. despite her mild distrust for her sister, she was somehow convinced to send noemi to leopold academy. marisa was able to forge a pamphlet to make the school appear to be a prestigious scientific academy where noemi would receive a top-notch education. noemi's extravagant aunt could get her into this school on a supposed "free scholarship," and her parents were thrilled. little did anyone know, this academy was for a practice much harder than biology. it wasn't until noemi first stepped into the school at fourteen did she find out leopold was a school for witches. her aunt was an old colleague of the headmasters.

somehow, the idea of magic didn't seem so outlandish to noemi. she believed maybe she was destined for something a little weird. as years went on, noemi's interest in magic bloomed. now, in her last year, she couldn't have imagined a better fate.

→ vitalum vitalis: the ability to balance the scales between one life force and another. the user can transfer their own life force to nearly dead living things in order to heal them and can even resurrect the dead. can also be used to drain life force as well. on rare occasions, some witches are able to reverse injuries and the aging process, even those that resulted in death.
→ tychokinesis: manipulation of luck by manifesting an energy that can make an unlikely event either positive or negative to happen. the user can shift the energies to accomplish different effects due to its concentration; thus, the energy may be pre-existing. the lack of energy may make structures crumble while an abundance of energy can increase the efficiency of the object. (note: she hasn’t accessed this ability yet)

→ when using vitalum vitalis, noemi literally takes part of her own life force to aid another. it doesn't kill her, but it takes a certain toll on her body.
→ after using vitalum vitalis in large heaps, noemi is often met with the side-effects of dizziness and fainting spells. other lesser known effects include nosebleeds, visible harm or bruising, and the looming chance of death.
→ the effects of tychokinesis aren't completely certain. it's an ability pertaining probability. though an action is most likely, there's always a slim possibility of another.
→ one of the scariest things to face when using tychokinesis is that anything can go horribly wrong. luck and probability takes incredible calculation, so the slightest mishap could ruin everything.

→ even though she’s aware that appearance is such a shallow thing, she’s afraid of never being found attractive. she’s afraid that even if someone loves her, they’ll never love how she looks.

as a result of his isolated upbringing, sykes speaks like he has a plum in his mouth, unusually articulated and sounding straight from Eton, due to the influence of his affluent and mostly english tutors. [div class="loveSubheader"]adolescence, present day[/div] in his own words, johnny was a "wretched little nightmare" as soon as he hit his growth spurt. in his early years, he was a mischievous child who exasperated his teachers to no end, but he still retained an echo of his mother's classic restrained personality, staying on the wagon, so to speak. however, the repression of his stifling lifestyle finally culminated in a manifestation of transmutation, affording him freedom from his imprisonment and the successful executions of many legendary pranks. it was a shock, to be sure—the males of the sykes line rarely had any magical talent running through their veins. johnathan was the first in generations. completely blindsided, the adults in his life were unable to stop him from running rampant—teleporting miles from home and completely skipping town for days at a time. his mother tried everything from wards to anchoring rituals—but when sykes couldn't use his magic to escape, he tried more mundane ways, like picking locks, breaking doors, and catapulting out of windows before vanishing in a blur of mist.

after the manhattan collective, a major coven in new york city, america caught him trespassing their wards in the MoMA, delirious and missing his left hand, johanna sykes finally decided enough was enough, and shipped him off to leopold academy in hopes that rigorous environment filled with his peers might tame him (it did, to an extent, but people never really change, do they?)

• fey's tongue: sykes almost never says what he means. every turn of phrase is layered with meanings, all with varying degrees of sincerity. completely passive-aggressive. having a conversation with him is like trying to cross a field full of landmines, and when he's in his moods, his sarcasm is so pervasive that all that usually comes across is the feeling that he's making a joke you don't get at your expense—almost guaranteed to rub you the wrong way.
• can't catch me: he's a runner, not a fighter. often after pulling one of his stunts, johnny doesn't stick around for the aftermath. don't get him wrong, he's 100% all in, ride or die...until he isn't.
• means to an end: johnathan sykes will do what he must (read: anything) to get what he needs.

based on his vices, two fatal weaknesses of his would be his unimpressive fighting ability (his true calling lies in the opposite direction) and his lack of care for the people around him (and to a lesser extent, himself). • quick on his feet: when you want to get away with the kind of stuff johnny does, you learn to think & act fast. he's got a lightning fast wit, the ability to travel through space, and a mouth that runs a mile a minute. he's always got a game plan, and the guts to execute it to the last letter. calculating and decisive, he often manages to manipulate & charm people and situations deftly to his favor.
• all the world's a stage: sykes makes lying into an art form and can spit bullshit with a straight face and not blink an eye under scrutiny. incredibly useful for a delinquent, or covering your delinquent friends
• heart of gold bronze, maybe?: johnathan sykes is a guy who looks out for himself. he is his own #1 priority. but he's not completely stone cold. dude has a soft spot a mile wide for the people that have stuck by him throughout the years, to the point where he would even risk his dearly beloved skin to save theirs. johnny sykes is by nature an agent of chaos, but even he sometimes bends fate in the favor of those he cares about. however, this trait manifests itself in occasions far and few between, so one shouldn't completely depend on johnny to swoop in and save the day.
• class clown: everything about johnathan is calculated to entertain people & make them laugh, to put them at ease, even if they know that he's all sharp angles. the thing about johnathan is that he's not the knife in your back that you never see coming—he's the poison you take, obviously lethal but too sweet to resist. he bases a lot of his worth on the way that people perceive him, so he works hard to make sure that the people that matter thinks he matters, too. classic funny friend syndrome on steroids. but at the end of the day, johnathan sykes is charming and comedic, even with all his baggage.

strength : all of finn's strength is concentrated in her head. she'll be the smartest person in a room on any given day, in any room, but when it comes to physical prowess, she's lacking. she's never been a fan of sports either, unless sneaking in and out of places counts as a sport.

stubborn : as we've already established that finnleigh is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve her goals, it isn't very hard to believe that she has trouble agreeing with others once she's made up her mind. she hates being told what to do, and often goes rogue when people don't agree with her because she always believe's she's right.

vengeful : it may not seem like it, since all she's usually bothered with is herself and her achievements, but finnleigh doesn't forget it when someone crosses her, and she takes it personally, no matter how small the issue is. the same can be said if someone messes with a friend, and finn usually gets back at them sevenfold.

finnleigh is the youngest in a family of five. though her parents were both gifted with magic, they weren't very well known for things they accomplished with it. as teens, they were foolish, reckless, and they fell in love, and that was pretty much all they cared about, rather than seeking knowledge about what they were capable of.

finnleigh's older brothers followed in their parents footsteps, focusing on things other than magic, or using their abilities however they wished, instead of learning how to use them properly and for good. finn was different, and this was clear from quite early on with the way she acted with those around her, and how she displayed an intelligence level that was far above average.

some of her parents habits rubbed off on her, as they live a life that would encourage most people to call them 'hippies', but finnleigh has never really cared about what others had to say about her. she was given a lot of freedom, but she used it to learn more instead of going gallivanting and causing a ruckus like her brothers.

she discovered her abilities early on, which her parents were waiting to see. she was no different from the rest of the family. at least, that's what it seemed like till she turned twelve and did something they'd never seen a twelve-year-old do. to bring someone back to life with their power is a hard task, and even for practised adults incredibly hard to do and remain standing right after. finnleigh accomplished it, though, whether by chance or pure passion, since the person she brought back was her brother aiden.

since he was a reckless fellow, he got involved with a bad crowd, and crossing such people never ends well. aiden slept with the wrong girl, skimmed some drugs off the top, and ended up stabbed in an alleyway. feeling pure devastation and anger seemed to help and without realising it, finnleigh willed him back to life, transferring a considerable amount of her own life force to make it happen. of course, she wasn't exactly standing right after it, because she blacked out for two whole days, but it was a feat no twelve year old should be able to do. it was clear to her parents that while she was like them, she was also perhaps a little more enhanced.

finn became more curious about her own abilities after that because it turned out it didn't have to be standard for everyone. the incident also left her feeling weird, because bringing someone back from the dead wasn't natural, but then again, what about her family or her powers was natural?

so, finn continued to study, gaining more knowledge through experiments — though she never again tried to revive a human. she limited her human interaction to healing injuries, but the same could not be said for plants and small animals. she has a feeling part of the reason she was even able to do what she did was because of her emotions, and she hasn't ever experienced such a thing again since then.

at leopold, finnleigh thrived, excelling in all of her classes and standing at the top, clearly outranking her peers. there's still much she wishes to learn (because of that darn curiosity) and though she's in her final year, she intends to get most of her answers by the end of the term.

abilities
vitalum vitalis : the ability to balance the scales of life, so to speak. finn has the uncanny ability to use her own life force to transfer energy unto other living things, to either heal, revive or resurrect them. she can also do the reverse — drawing on other life forces to make herself stronger, in terms of energy (so when she's close to fainting, dying, etc.).

tychokinesis : this ability is not yet acquired, and will reveal itself later, but tychokinesis is essentially the ability to manipulate luck. finnleigh's irish for a reason, it would seem. with tychokinesis, she'd have the ability to manipulate 'luck energy' which is essentially changing the probability of a certain situation, so that it happens in her favour. it's a complicated ability, but one finnleigh will eventually be able to use for many things.

weaknesses
vitalum vitalis : when giving other people her energy, she draws from the source of her power, which is her own life source. this means that she gets drained rather quickly, and depending on how much she's giving (since more would be required for a resurrection, as opposed to simple healing), she could face fainting spells, nosebleeds, easy bruising, blackouts for long periods of time, and she tends to pale, appearing incredibly weak. she recovers eventually, of course, but it can take her out of action for a long time, depending on the situation. similarly, when she draws from other life sources for herself, the effect is only temporary, and eventually fades. at the moment, it's much easier for her to draw on and give energy to plants and animals, as they are smaller, and full resurrection from the dead is easier. she's only resurrected a person from the dead once before, and by chance. she hasn't tried it again since then.

tychokinesis : while she's able to manipulate luck to her favour, things aren't always as they seem. finn can't predict the future, so while she may think she's doing the right thing by making something happen in her favour, something even worse could take place as a result, so finn isn't really bringing a positive spin to things. she's just 'misplacing' the luck, and it doesn't always need to be good luck. finn also cannot change the luck of everything. some things are highly dependent on people and their emotions and decisions, and those are things she can't change. she can only fiddle with energy around inanimate objects.

fears
one of finnleigh's biggest fears is failure. it hasn't ever really happened because she's always found a way out, and because of that, she doesn't really know what she'd do when she's faced with impending failure. aside from this, finnleigh fears loss. she'll never admit it, because someone as smart as herself knows better than to worry about such things when there are other things she could fear, and because of it, she doesn't have many people she considers close (though her personality drives people away too). in any case, she does fear the loss of those close to her, and any hint of it can send her into a downward spiral.
