Welcome to Uljin Penitentiary. Home of criminals of all shapes and size in South Korea. Our men spend their days eating, sleeping, reading, watching television and socialising within their cells. Once a day, theyโ€™re eligible for outdoor recreational time, a shower and an optional job to gain credits to use in the prison shop (including woodwork, working in the kitchens, or construction work). Church is every Sunday. All these criminals are nothing but scum to society. Thereโ€™s nothing special about them.

But the men in cell block two, room thirteen like to think otherwise.

The six inmates have been sharing the same cell for the last three months, becoming more comfortable with one and another. Each male has a different personality which may cause them to clash sometimes. However, they have a growing brotherly bond blossoming. The men are either new criminals or recently transferred criminals with three years left on their sentencing. Visitation for cell block area two is every Saturday in which they get to see their loved ones and friends. Every public holiday, the prison hosts family days in which family are allowed within the prison to see the lives their loved ones are living.

[div class=subt]history[/div] Growing up in the Park family, they seemed like your every day normal traditional Korean family. And thatโ€™s because they were.

On the 14th February 1997, Park Tae-Yeon was born into this world surrounded by people who loved and adored him. He grew up with his sister, Nari who was three years old than him, and both his parents. They led quite normal lives. Their parents were praised by their town as their mother, General Park Ae-Jung worked for the Navy and their father, General Park Jong-Oh was an active member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Republic of Korea. The pair of them were known to the town as โ€˜the Nationโ€™s pride coupleโ€™ as they both served in the military and trained many soldiers during their time.

In saying that they were a traditional Korean family, Jong-Oh was very firm with his children and would often treat them like the soldiers he trained. But that was just how fathers were, right? But their mother was very kind, affectionate and the Park siblings often wondered why their mother never went to become a chef due to her amazing cooking abilities. Out of his parents, Tae-Yeon found himself more attached to his mother. He shared the same personality as her; highly affectionate, loved to cook and was a very sensitive soul. Whenever she was home from work, he rarely left her side as she was becoming more like his best friend as he became older.

On 26th March 2010, at the age of 13, Tae-Yeon lost his mother. She had been aboard the ROKS Cheonan, a Pohang-class corvette for the Republic of Korea Navy, when an unknown explosion occurred causing the ship to break and sink off the south-west coast of Baengnyeong Island. His best friend in the whole world, his Mum, had been one of the 46 crew members to die upon the ship. Their father came to such grief that Tae was placed as head griever for her funeral. That day became a turning point for his father, who began to drink every night to try and ease the pain of losing his wife.

As the days went by, the Park siblings began to adapt to living without their mother by their side. Nari took responsibility to ensure her father was ready for work while Tae focused on cooking all the meals and cleaning the house. But their fatherโ€™s love for alcohol gradually became worse over the first year of Ae-Jungโ€™s passing. And he began to use physical force against his children. While Jung-Oh would fire verbal abuse towards his daughter, he wouldnโ€™t dare to lay a single finger on her. She was his pride and joy after all. Tae-Yeon, on the other hand, every time he looked at his son he could only see Ae-Jung. Their son had always been the splitting image of his wife; his smile, his facial structure and even his personality. And it tore Jung-Oh apart.

And so, he would physically abuse his son every night.

Not wanting his sister to worry about him, Tae spent most of his time hiding the bruises and making excuses, saying he had fallen over at school or tripped while getting the mail from the letterbox. When Nari turned 19, he no longer had to make excuses anymore because she was off to university in Seoul. He reassured Nari that he could look after his father by himself and urged her to go and pursue her dreams of becoming a doctor. And so, she left for Seoul and Tae was left to care for his father. He was left to bare the pain of his fatherโ€™s sorrows in the form of flying fists and glass bottles being thrown in his direction.

Within the first year of Nari being away, Tae had been admitted into hospital five times. Three times for his shoulder which kept on dislocating, and the other two he was brought in by neighbours who had found him wondering the streets with large cuts and burns on his body. But when approached by the police at the hospital, he did the same thing he always did.

He hid the pain.

He smiled.

Widely. And brightly. Like sunshine.

And told them that he was just a very clumsy teenager.

He kept all the pain buried deep inside. Not wanting others to be burdened by his pain like his father did to him. And he was doing so well with it too until that faithful night where Nari came to visit. Tae hadnโ€™t been returning her text messages (mainly because his father had smashed his phone a couple of weeks back) and she was beginning to get worried about him. She arrived at the house to find the living room in a complete mess. Old family portraits shattered on the ground and old Soju bottles upon the floor. When she found Tae in his room, he was hiding in his cupboard. Beaten, bruised, bleeding and with another dislocated shoulder.

Nari helped him to place his shoulder back into place and began to tend to his wounds. However, his father had awoken from his post-beating nap and found Nari trying to help Tae. Fuelled with anger, saying that she was betraying him for helping Tae, he began to beat his daughter for the first time. In fact, he wouldnโ€™t stop. Knowing how strong his father was, Tae lunged at his father and pinned him to the ground. It was like some superhuman strength over came him as he had an out of body experience. He felt like he was watching himself from above as he saw himself grab a Soju bottle and repeatedly hit his father in the head. When the glass shattered, Tae then continued to beat his fatherโ€™s face with a closed fist. And he continued to do so until Nari came over and pulled him off of the older man. But it was too late.

Park Tae-Yeon became one of the most tweeted names for Korea the next day.

The sixteen-year-old who had beaten his father to death. It didnโ€™t matter to people that he was trying to save his sister. It didnโ€™t matter to people that he had been physically abusing his son for over three years. The only thing that mattered was that this young teenager had killed his father. His father who was a General in the Army. The Army-crazed country was outraged that this boy had killed someone so important. At every court hearing, there were protestors screaming into his face saying he was a murderer who deserved to rot in prison for the rest of his life. And when his sentence was revealed, there were petitions against it, saying that seven years wasnโ€™t long enough for a monster like him.

Isnโ€™t it crazy that all it took was one day. One day, he was invisible. The next, he was Koreaโ€™s youngest most hated criminal, about to serve seven years in jail for the murder of his father. [/div][/div][/div][/div]

[div class=subt]park nari
Nari is Taeโ€™s older sister. Sheโ€™s 25 years old and has recently finished studying at Seoul University with aspirations to be a doctor. She has managed to land herself a job at a hospital in Seoul, but always makes time to visit her brother during visitation hours. She adores her little brother and tries everything to protect him. However, after their Umma died, their Appa took out most of his frustration and anger out on Tae. On the night of her Appaโ€™s death, Tae had been trying to protect Nari from being beaten to death by their Appa.

[div class=subt]elias kim
Coming soon.

[div class=subt]ahn jae wong
Tae is scared of Ahn. Full stop. And when he's scared, his body reacts in it's automatic anxiety mode. And that's just to smile and make light of the situation. And seeing as Ahn has quite a grumpy persona compared to Tae's sunshine personality he displays, it doesn't really work out for Tae because it seems to piss Ahn off more. He tries to stay away from Ahn as much as possible (even sleeping on the opposite side of the room from him), and sticks close to Min-Jae of Do-Yun for a sense of security and protection.

[div class=subt]kim do-yun
While Tae adores Jay for the sure fact that his music helped him in a rough patch of his life, he also adores Do-Yun but for another reason. The primary reason being that Do-Yun reminds him of his older sister, Nari. Nari has just finished up her medical school training and is starting to work at a hospital in Seoul. She always tried her best to protect him during their father's episodes and therefore, when he looked as Do, he feels a sense of comfort and safety. He loves to call him Hyung (older brother) and respects him probably the most out of all the inmates. In saying that, however, he doesn't want Do-Yun to worry about him like Nari used to. So when the older male asks him questions such as "Are you okay?" or "Are you tired?", Tae simply gives him his trademark sunshine smile and insists that he's okay, even when he's not.

[div class=subt]xu lian [/div] As Tae aspires to be a chef, he was naturally drawn to Lian in the prison's kitchen. He is in complete awe in how good of a chef Lian is and will often turn to him for guidance. Spending time with Lian reminds him of spending time with his Mum. Tae's love language is physical touch and he is a rather affectionate boy - and he's starting to notice that Lian has an affectionate side also which has him over the moon (and also has him quickly giving him lightning speed cuddles before running off just in case)

[div class=subt]cha min-jae[/div] Tae freaking loves Jay. Late at night, while studying, he'd listen to Orion and Jay with his head phones on, trying to block the world around him. He'd often sneak to use the television to watch Min-Jae's dramas (his dad didn't like to use the television and would get mad whenever it was on). However, after entering the juvi detention system, Tae fell out of the loop with Min-Jae and his movements. It wasn't until he discovered that he was his cellmate that he realized the man had been sentenced to jail. For the last three months, Tae has been completely star struck. He still doesn't fully understand why Min-Jae is in jail, but he still worships the friggen ground that guy walks on because all he can think about is how his calming voice use to soothe him during the harsh nights.

Personality Type: ENTJ-A [The Commander]

Description
Who exactly Cha Min-Jae is would depend greatly on who youโ€™re asking. He leaves a largely positive impression, in varying degrees, to those who watch him through the screen, but he is a far more polarizing figure in real life. Min-Jae has an enigmatic magnetism about him that makes people want to be around himโ€ฆ but whether they enjoy that experience or not is another matter altogether.

Though he is proficient in acting and can easily throw up an unfalteringly cordial front, truly gaining his respect is difficult and to control him is an impossible task except for a select handful. Min-Jae does what he wants, how he wants it, as far as he can. If anyone doesnโ€™t like that, he would ask them to do it better themselves or stop him if they can. Most of the time, they canโ€™t โ โ€” or wonโ€™t try in fear that they canโ€™t โ โ€” and this means he often gets away with his blasรฉ attitude.

Partly because of that, Min-Jaeโ€™s self-confidence, contrary to what it was when he was a child, is off-the-charts high. No matter what he does, he has absolute faith in himself...unless it concerns dealing with emotions. Ironic, perhaps, for someone who makes a living portraying feelings to be so hesitant about them. But while Min-Jae is an expert how emotions come about , he is quite terrible at making them go away for anyone but himself. Although he has a pretty questionable morality, he does care a lot about the (very) few people he holds close to his heart and can be rather protective. Unfortunately, he just sucks at being warm or gentle or affectionate or anything to that effect. People coming to him crying are far more likely to either end up with a practical solution to the problem or a โ€œget yourself together, manโ€ than any sort of comfort.

Despite his tendency to come off intimidating or cold in one-on-one interactions, when Min-Jae steps into a crowd, he naturally becomes its center. His mood inevitably affects everyone around him; when heโ€™s happy, he can light a room up, but when heโ€™s not, he could burn that same room down. He is an exhilarating experience when really in his element, somewhat akin to a roller-coaster ride. You either adore him or absolutely hate his guts and, honestly, he couldnโ€™t care less which it is.

Virtues: Confident, Determined, Charismatic, Rational, Perceptive, Quick-Witted, Humorous, Bold, Loyal, Protective

Vices: Cynical, Sharp-Tongued, Obstinate, Insensitive, Arrogant, Impulsive, Possessive, Detached, Intimidating

Likes: Coffee, Rainy Seasons, Money (duh), Music, Dancing, Acting, Fashion (prison is killing him), His Fans (Surprisingly), Attention (sue him), Dogs

Dislikes: Drugs(except, maybe, weed), Anybody That Takes Drugs, Insects, Restrictions (he repeats, prison is killing him), Awkward Silences, Diets, His Fans (sometimes, they get wild)

Crime + Sentence Length: Coercion, Aiding & Abetting [Assault/Battery], Aiding & Abetting [Second-Degree Murder]....... 3 years without parole

1995
Cha Hae-In, a rising model about to reach the climax of her career, found out that she was pregnant. She told her boyfriend about the news and he urged her to get an illegal abortion. However, Hae-In was reluctant despite the knowledge that having the baby would be a great detour in her path to success. Eventually, she decided to keep the child, much to the chagrin of her lover who left her without another word.

1999
Cha Min-Jae was a gorgeous, bubbly child and, though her dream of becoming a supermodel had been ruined by his arrival, his mother loved him more than she had ever loved anything else. To provide for him, she realized that they needed someone to rely on. She found a man to settle down with, enduring his less-than-stellar personality so she and her son could have a roof over their heads. What she didnโ€™t realize until it was too late, however, was that the man had not been able to quit his addiction to dangerous recreational drugs despite his insistence otherwise.

2001
In a drug-fueled rage, Min-Jaeโ€™s step-father beat his mother half to death. By the time their neighbours called the police, it was too late. She passed away in the ICU just minutes after arrival. Unable to find any other suitable guardian, Min-Jae was forcefully placed under the care of his biological father, who had already long since married another woman. Needless to say, the boyโ€™s presence was not welcomed and he was left all on his own, completely deprived of attention and affection.

2005
The hostile atmosphere against him back home, as one would expect, did not translate well into Min-Jaeโ€™s outlook on life. His tall stature and seemingly ever-glaring eyes left him a lone wolf in school as well. With not a single human connection to rely on, the boy grew colder each passing day.

2008
A talent agent approached Min-Jae with a shiny name card, claiming to be a part of MS Entertainmentโ€™s scouting team. She asked if he would like to try and audition for a spot in their idol trainee program because he, in her own words, โ€œdefinitely had the face for itโ€. Min-Jae was certain he was either being scammed or this lady was terrible at her job. The whole world and then some clearly hated him. To try turning him into a celebrity, an icon to be adored by the masses? Surely, the worst investment a company could make. Still, with promises of monetary allowances and the realization that he had nothing to lose, he was coaxed into trying.

As it would turn out, he had underestimated himself by quite a long shot. He managed to through all three rounds of audition using some measly skills gained from three free dance lessons. He had an innate talent, his trainers praised, something magnetic about him that made him perfect for the industry. Min-Jae found that notion ridiculous, at first. He would soon be proven wrong once again.

When rumors of his acceptance into the company began to spread, girls who used to throw glances at him snapped up the opportunity, using their curiosity as an excuse to approach him. One, two, three, four, more and more and more, until he found himself constantly surrounded by a group of students during lunch and in between classes. Though initially jarring, Min-Jae soon grew used to the overwhelming attention, enjoyed it even.

2010
After just two years of training, aged only 15, Min-Jae debuted as Jay, the youngest member of Orion, MS Entโ€™s newest idol group. Their very first single exploded in the charts and he was thrown into the limelight before he had even properly stepped on stage. His company insisted that he take on a naive, boy-next-door kind of image and, with his natural flair for acting, he played it to a tee, earning himself a sweet, sparkling reputation. If he had thought that the reverence his schoolmates lumped on him was inexplicable, well, theโ€ฆ intense support of his newly gained fans exceeded that a hundred times over.

It was around this time that he met Kim Woo-Young, the son of his companyโ€™s CEO. Despite apparently being notoriously difficult to impress, the older boy, too, gave him an unheralded amount of attention from their first meeting. Woo-Young took Min-Jae under his wing so naturally that even the boy himself, for all his usual detachment and skepticism of the world, did not question the gesture.

As obliging and pleasant as the elder was to him, Woo-Young was far from being nice when facing certain others. To put it simply, he was a bully. In the eyes of his victims, however, he was far more nefarious than that childish-sounding word, a terrifying existence whose voice calling their name could send shivers down their spines. Upon finding out about this, Min-Jae could only be glad he had somehow stumbled into Woo-Youngโ€™s good graces before he ever managed to piss the older boy off. He feigned ignorance to the torture he witnessed, turning a blind eye in order not to inconvenience himself.

2012
His career was climbing, higher and higher, as though there was destined to be no peak. By this point, he had long left the rest of his group behind, becoming far better known as Jay, the beloved teen heartthrob, than Jay, a member of Orion. It was clear that this bothered the older members in the band. A distance began to grow between him and the rest, a stark reminder to Min-Jae of his life at home.

This pushed him even closer to Woo-Young; having nobody else who accepted him so readily, he opted to be with the elder whenever he wasnโ€™t occupied with work. He drank alcohol for the first time with the older boy; went skydiving, traveled overseas, smoked weed for the first time with him. As they grew more intimate and puberty entered its last phase for him, he also had sex, for the very first time, with Woo-Young. After that night, it became clearer to Min-Jae what kind of intentions he had been taken in so eagerly with by his friend back then.

Even so, Woo-young asserted, if it were just the physical aspect, this would have happened a long time ago. Their relationship was more than that, the boy vowed, and Min-Jae was important to him. As teenagers blinded by infatuation tended to do, Min-Jae believed. For just once in his life, he trusted another person completely, genuinely (and damn was that a huge mistake).

Though he shined bright in front of the cameras, behind the scenes, he grew increasingly involved in Woo-Young's darkness. He never physically participated, no, but he would watch and, when his now-boyfriend would whisper something scathing about whoever was suffering in front of them, as if sharing a secret joke between just the two of them, he would laugh.

The more used he got to the life at the top, the more comfortable he became with the way they treated people they deemed as beneath them. Sometimes, when a particularly malicious mood struck him, he began making offhand comments about people that got on his nerves, knowing full well that the unfortunate name that left his lips would become their groupโ€™s next victim.

2014
Min-Jae left his band to go solo, compelled by the unrelenting insistence of the companyโ€™s upper management. Rather than continuing on to do music, he switched his field to acting, having had a couple minor roles while working as an idol. His popularity was already high and it didnโ€™t take much for him to find success, earning himself the moniker of โ€œNationโ€™s First Loveโ€. For not even being 20 years old, this was a huge accomplishment and the public soaked it all up with stars in their eyes.

While that aspect of his life was going amazingly, other parts...well.

Woo-Young suggested they try a new drug on the market. For the first time since they had known each other, Min-Jae said no. He tried to talk the man out of it but his concern was casually dismissed. Iโ€™ll be fine. I know how to take care of myself. Itโ€™s just for fun, Jae. Except it wasnโ€™t.

2015
No changes to his career. It flourished as much as ever and critics had finally gotten over his previous idol status to realize that he was, in fact, a great actor. He won awards, made headlines, gained fans. After so many years, he had grown rather numb to it. Being a celebrity was just like any other job to him, just full of far more intense people โ โ€” whether those be colleagues or fans.

Woo-Young, as expected, had become addicted. He was better at hiding it than most others, sure, but an addict all the same. It changed him, made him volatile, menacing at the worst of it and then, suddenly, loving once again. His tormenting of others escalated, sometimes until even those who had happily taken part before grew uncomfortable. Although he would never admit it, Woo-Young began to scare Min-Jae.

2016
They stumble into a bar, laughing all over themselves. In a moment of clumsiness, Min-Jaeโ€™s face mask falls to the ground. In her shock at seeing a face sheโ€™d only over seen on a screen, the waitress loses her sense of balance and some drinks slide off. They fall on Woo-Young. The older man smiles, says itโ€™s nothing and she doesnโ€™t have to worry. But Min-Jae knows that look in his eyes.

Cut to a few hours later, the girl who served them is sobbing on the ground, clothes torn, entire body drenched. But Woo-Young isnโ€™t satisfied. He hadnโ€™t managed to get his fix in the afternoon and his mood was stormy. He picks up a glass bottle.

Wait, Min-Jae tries, thatโ€™s enough. But his words fall on deaf ears. Though some had been laughing at her plight just a while ago, the atmosphere quickly turns somber as their leader tears the girl apart. They know this was crossing a line. But they didnโ€™t know how to stop. Seconds that feels like hours pass. Her screams and pleas turn into soft crying. Finally, she goes silent.

Useless bitch, was all Woo-Young spat at her limp figure before leaving the abandoned storage room, pulling Min-Jae away with him.

He still remembers, clear as day, the phone call he received just minutes after, when they were getting into his car. The girl was dead, his friend whispered over the phone, panicked, what were they supposed to do with her body?

2017
Their group was full of sons and daughters of powerful men. At first, it seemed as though it could all be covered up smoothly. Terrified that the public would realize what their son had become, Woo-Youngโ€™s parents carted him off to a rehabilitation facility. In the wake of it, Min-Jae immersed himself in his career, determined not to feel guilt at the crime he had helped happen.

Like the great plot twist in a movie, however, the girlโ€™s older brother turned out to be a police investigator. An unfortunately good one, as well. He chased after evidence of what the group of youth had done, not only to his sister, but throughout all their years of misdemeanor.

As hard as they tried to keep him down, his search for justice reached the ears of news outlets just a step too quickly. Appalling truth behind Seoulโ€™s glittering elite, articles headlined. As it gained popularity, more and more information and testimonies began to come out.

Male actor, Cโ€™s possible involvement in the Seoul Youth Gang case? Journalists speculated, gathering the story piece by piece, trying to create a full picture of what had gone down as the country looked on with bated breath.

On 17th November 2017, Min-Jae received his first official call down to the police station. And there started the second upheaval of his life.

2019
Over a year after the beginning of the investigation, the case finally comes to a close. An unfortunate member of the group had been framed as the murderer and received what might as well have been a life sentence. Min-Jae, on the other hand, was given three years of jail time for being an accessory to the crimes, arguably the most lenient sentence when considering that he had been a leader among the group. Woo-Young was the only one who got off scot-free.

The news of his crime and sentence spread like wildfire. It was the headline of the decade, that a boy they had watched grow up on screen, someone who had been a household name, had fallen so low.

JJ.Ren: Only three years??? I guess this just goes to show how corrupted our justice system is :/

Minnie_XOXO: Heโ€™s innocent. You donโ€™t know what youโ€™re talking about.

llilli: Stop defending him. I was a fan too but what he did was cruel and completely unacceptable. Three years is really too short.

24kiara-t: wow gives me chills. He seemed like such a great guy when he came out on shows but I guess that was all fake...actors are scary yo

weewoo: right? his villain role in Blood Moon is sudddenly so much scarier to look at now

junelove: lololol why are you acting so surprised. it was obvious from the start that Cha Min-Jae was a nasty guy lol

rexxie: agreed. i always knew he was shady. hope he gets raped in prison~

They talked and talked about it. Everyone had their own favorite opinions.

But all Min-Jae could feel was despair and resentment like never before. He had crawled his way up from the bottom, worked himself to the bone. And, now, what? Gone. Just like that. The thought of it made him want to scream and break down. Still, he tried to tell himself, heโ€™s better than that. He can hold it in. Or, at least, heโ€™s been able to until now. But who knows whatโ€™ll happen in prison?

KIM WOO-YOUNG (27)
The first and last person Min-Jae ever made the mistake of trusting completely. It started as a sort of hero worship when the wealthy, powerful, older boy took him in, before those feelings turned into romantic infatuation. Min-Jae defered to him, indulged his requests no matter what they were, and that was the single error in judgement that led him down the dark, slippery slope to his current situation. Min-Jae has resolutely decided to cut off all ties with Woo-Young after his life was ruined but the elder, back out of rehab and apparently clean now, seems insistent on reconnecting with him and visits him often in prison.

PARK TAE-YEON (22)
It was immediately obvious to Min-Jae that Tae adored him. While that's nothing new to him, it both amused and confounded him to be met with such enthusiastic fanboy-ness in prison, of all places. Though he can be snappy at times toward Tae's seemingly endless positivity, he inevitably feels a little guilty afterward and, thus, tends to be more lenient and soft toward Tae than most others. The more the boy sticks to him, the more inclined Min-Jae grows to let him, and the younger's apparent innocence leaves him no choice but to feel slightly protective.

AHN JAE-WONG (23)
Min-Jae has probably broken some kind of record for numbers of trips to solitary confinement in his first month of prison because of Ahn. After enough brawls to last a normal person, say, five lifetimes, Min-Jae has decided to take a more passive-aggressive stance. While he's aware his faux sugary attitude toward Ahn only serves to piss the boy off more, at least he can claim to be the victim when they fight and avoid the disgusting solitary rooms, now.

KIM DO-YUN (33)
Do-Yun and Min-Jae are both leaders but starkly different kinds โ โ€” one takes unyielding control while the other attracts and influences. Though Min-Jae used to find the former trait desirable, sexy even, the fiasco with Woo-Young has greatly turned him against it, leading him to abhor rather than admire. Even without that fact, he's always been extremely unwilling to be directed, by anyone, at anytime. Unfortunately for him, Min-Jae's at a great disadvantage when it comes to age, being a whole decade younger. Still, he rebels where he can, talking back often to the elder and putting in much effort to avoid him (largely impossible, considering they live together and work in the same place). Sometimes, Min-Jae feels like Do-Yun can see right through him, which only serves to make him pull even further away from the man.

Ahn seems to be living in an eternal Monday. Constantly grouching, mumbling, and going out of his way to get away from people. Earbuds dangling out of his heavily pierced ears and a phone in hand, the man is more often seen in passing then not. He is always on the move, giving off the impression of someone that has somewhere to be, but usually its just to find a quiet place for a smoke or just a break. A loner would be a good word to describe him. People just aren't his thing. Emo, right? Tell him that and your face can meet his fist. Don't try calling him bahn mi either.

He has no shortage of anger, but no way to deal with it. Ahn is very prone to lashing out, often through the form of physical attacks. Though he seems perpetually grumpy, if you push the right buttons, you could have a raging volcano on your hands. The brunet isn't used to affection-- or attention in general-- and doesn't deal with it very well. He gets flustered easily in social situations, especially if he is in close contact with someone. This initial state can quickly shift into anger. If he feels that he is being forced to talk to someone he will try his best to shut the conversation down, which usually comes through the form of attempting to alienate the person. But, if you're able to hold conversation long enough to calm him down, Ahn isn't all that unpleasant. A little bit quiet, almost shy. But then again, nobody has gotten there yet...

backstory
[ bio ]
Ahn had a fairly standard childhood. His family was large, maybe the house a bit too small, but they were doing well. He grew up with 4 brothers and one sister, the sister and 3 of the brothers being older than him. The close quarters encouraged friendly relationships but also sometimes ignited bickering. Overall Ahn was close with his brothers, though not his sister. None of his family really was, actually. He knew that she was struggling but still thinking females to be constantly overdramatic crossed it off as somewhat of a long mood swing.

Time passed and Ahn grew. He was in 7th grade when his sister first got her boyfriend. Chung-Ae was in 11th grade at the time and overjoyed at the prospect of having someone to be close with. Ahn and his siblings teased her about it, but the girl was so head-over-heels that she just brushed them off with a snort. Ahn only met the man a few times. He seemed alright, not too bad on the eyes. Overhearing phone calls through the wall in between the two's rooms wasn't uncommon for him. They were overbearingly lovey-dovey, it made him gag. Conversations, over time, dulled. He concluded that the relationship was coming to a slow. After a while they turned to just small hellos from his sister and then long silence on her side until she would hang up, or rather, be hung up on.

At this point his Chung-Ae's mental state had seriously deteriorated. He knew something was wrong, and his parents did too. They sat her down and discovered that her boyfriend had been mentally abusive; Threatening to kill himself if she left and the likes. Thankfully she was already done with it and was more than open to the idea of splitting up. His parents got her help, and though it wasn't easy and she didn't get out scot-free, neither of them died and they separated successfully. Time, again, passed and the incident faded into the background for Ahn, though Chung-Ae had yet to forget it.

Ahn was 20 when he met Cho-An in college. She was a pretty girl, shared a few classes with him. Him, being decently handsome at the time, was able to start a relationship between the two. Ahn had dated a few girls on and off before, but nothing serious or noteworthy. He thought it was 'cute' at first when she called him little pet names like 'my chubby pumpkin' or 'my little knuckle dragger'. Ahn got a bit uncomfortable as she got more and more derogatory. He tried to subtly cut things off but she just got more intense.

"Ahhhnnnn, you're always late."

"Wait, you actually like soccer? God, I thought you were joking, that's such a stupid hobby."

"Awww, hun, it's alright, just leave it to me, mkay? I don't think you would be able to grasp it..."

Cho-An had completely butchered his sense of self worth, reducing Ahn to a pile of emotionless goo on the ground. Ahn, desperate for any help he could get, reached out to his sister. Chung-Ae wasn't afraid to tell him that was abusive. She was still bitter about her experience with abuse and encouraged the impressionable boy towards violence. Ahn didn't follow through with her suggestions, instead choosing to take a more passive route. But whenever he got the confidence to break things off Cho-An would have a "good day", being all affectionate and loving.

It didn't take long for the young college student to be offered drugs. In his state he was more than inclined to say yes. He tried it once. He loved it. The high just washed everything away and for a few hours he didn't have to worry about Cho-An, his family, his schoolwork, anything. Ahn willingly got hooked. He had an afterschool job, he could afford it, and his parents were always either at work or looking after his brothers. It turned out drugs even helped the bruises and scratches fall from his mind.

Cho-An was getting physical but he didn't notice. They had been together for almost two years now. They went by so quick, but each day was painfully slow. He was drugged up almost 24-7 because nothing was stopping him. One day, Cho-An invited herself over to his house. His brothers were gone on this or that and his parents were at work. He knew what she was hoping to 'accomplish' but he didn't care. Ahn was so high that he wouldn't remember it, much less feel it. When she arrived they talked for a bit. She was having one of her better days and was able to show some basic human decency to Ahn, paired with unusual affection.

And then Ahn snapped. He was done. His sister was right; There was only one way out for him. He grabbed the nearest thing, which just so happened to be a pillow. He took the case off and started strangling Cho-An. She fought, but the girl was small and Ahn had the element of surprise. However, strangling someone isn't the quickest method of murder. Halfway through the ordeal one of Ahn's brothers came home. He heard the sounds of the struggle, and thinking that somebody had broken in and was strangling Ahn, called the police. His brother, Byung-Ho, stayed hidden and quiet, so when the police came Ahn was completely unaware and still strangling Cho-An.

He was arrested on the spot, and upon a police raid his 'treasure-trove' of drugs was found. His family didn't have all too much money to spare on a lawyer and though they got enough for a decent one, it was too little to late for Ahn. Now it's been a year in jail for him, and he is not excited about a new cell.

relationships

Jii Chung-Ae
Chung-Ae is Ahn's older sister. His feelings toward her are mixed, as she feels like she was the reason he attempted murder while he feels bad for putting that pressure on her. He occasionally will see her during visitation time and enjoys those meetings, while they are stiff and awkward to say the least. Chung-Ae has yet to interact with any other prisoners, as she still likes to avoid the fact that her brother is in prison.

Cha Min-Jae
Ahn and Min-Jae have a bit of history. They are no stranger to fights; They are also no stranger to getting sent to solitary for said fights. This has prompted Min-Jae to at least feign tolerance of the younger man, though Ahn is not holding back any thoughts or fists.

Jijn Cho-An
Cho-An is Ahn's previous girlfriend. He hates her with every fiber of his being, but what he feels when he sees her isn't necessarily hate. At the sight of her face, all he feels is this emptiness and dread. This often manifests as nausea or even spells of lightheadedness. The prison staff won't allow them to see each other as Ahn previously attempted to murder Cho-An. He's totally fine with this fact, and actually fears what would happen to both of them if they were to reconnect.

Kim Do-Yun
Do is perhaps the only person in room 13 that Ahn hasn't punched. The man's "no-bullshit" demeanor won Ahn over, especially his fearless displays of... well, whatever he decided he needs to prove. Ahn is inclined towards helping Do, even to the point where he would potentially do favors from him.

With a smooth charm and airy confidence, he often has no difficulties getting what he wants. People rely on him as a leader and his ability to make quick decisions doesn't disappoint those who turn to him for help or direction.

Do is exceptionally talented at whipping up plans and adjusting them on the fly. His quick thinking and intuition often guide him both within his career as a physician and in general day-to-day occurrences. Yet underneath all of his quick wit and charm is a man who empathizes strongly with those around him. He has a particular love for listening to people's stories and understanding how others' experiences have shaped them into the people they are today. His job often satisfies that, for he strives to learn about the patients he cares for, regardless of who they are or what concerns they may have.

However, Do-Yun can also be relentless and unforgiving when he believes others do not understand him. He enjoys proving himself and a little challenge isn't enough to make him back down. Combined with his tendency to call others out on their failures, Do may come across as insensitive and arrogant, despite the fact that he is simply trying to remain efficient. Unfortunately for him, he sometimes isn't particularly skilled at expressing his emotions in a way that allows him to work well with others.

His mother, Ji-hye, and father, Heon-Woo, believed that family came first and raised their four children with similar values. As the oldest of four siblings (two sisters and a brother), Do felt a great responsibility to look out for them. Whether it be in school hallways or out on the streets with friends, he was there to ensure no one ever found themselves in trouble they couldn't get out of.

But Do-Yun wasn't just the protective older brother. He was smart and rational, with a yearning to help others that had developed from when he was merely a toddler. From "bandaging" his stuffed animals to rescuing abandoned baby bunnies in his backyard, he was always helping. So it only made sense when the boy got himself into medical school as a young adult. He excelled in each and every one of his classes and hospital residencies, wowing his profs and clinical instructors. Do was happiest when he was working.

In January of 2019, however, he discovered that his younger brother, Se-Jun, was infected with HIV. Knowing the young man would be released from his job if his employer found out, Do-Yun did something he never imagined himself ever daring to do; he switched his brother's blood samples out for his own. Red flags were soon raised surrounding the incident and, only two months later, Do was found guilty of tampering with Se-Jun's blood samples, leading him to be arrested in March. He was brought in for interrogation, to which he responded truthfully, explaining that his only intentions had been to help his brother retain his employment. But the doctor also admitted to knowing what he'd done was wrong and that, yes, he was guilty.

Do-Yun was sentenced to three and a half years in prison at the end of April, after several weeks of interrogation and court dates.[/div][/div][/div] [/div][/div] [div class=columnhold][div class=img][/div] .. persona

Over the many years he's spent learning from his prior mistakes, Xu Lian has grown to be quite different than he had been at first. His impulsive and rash nature mellowed into something much more cautious, almost considerate. He takes the time needed to think over his actions before just jumping right into the driver's seat and going. Of course, there are instances where his former impetuousness comes back and he plays on whims. This is something he is still working on, especially when it comes to his pyromania. There's the chance, however, that this will never change and he'll be stuck with this recklessness for the rest of his life. Perhaps this is why he seems to forever act immature.

Introverted and rather shy, Lian himself doesn't do well in social situations. To fix this, he puts on an act, being incredibly childish and antagonistic. He often finds himself pushing people's buttons and testing just how far he can irritate them until they snap. However, if said person does break, he immediately does a 180 and beats himself up about it. It's this immaturity that he's trying to fix, considering that he's at the age where it's no longer acceptable. He doesn't know why he does this, nor what purpose this "other half" of him seems to think it serves, but he does know that it will need to be rectified if he's to have any sort of decent future. He's already been beaten up several times during his time in prison.

When he gets close to someone, he is very affectionate, but in his own, unique ways. He'd cook or bring someone a gift as opposed to outright stating just how much he appreciates their friendship. His childishness morphs into something much more innocent and playful with the people he enjoys spending time with. In fact, when it comes to his family, he loves to hug and be close to them. Such a physical display of admiration is something that would also probably translate over to his significant other, if he ever managed to find one.

The "real" Lian is actually rather quiet. When he's not overwhelmed or emotional, he allows himself to try and participate in regular conversations normally. By now, he's been able to comfortably speak freely like this with plenty other inmates, leaving him with connections forged on truth, not his persona. (Besides, his persona often winds up with him getting in trouble, so he's recently been trying to stop using it as a coping mechanism.) Although things have been good as of late, he's also found himself slipping down into darker territory, his freedom-loving personality aching to be released from prison. Perhaps, one day, he'll be able to live a good life with the availability to do what he pleases. Then again, reality is cruel.

biography

Xu Lian was born in Incheon, Korea. His mother was Korean and his father was Chinese. They had recently settled down in an apartment in Incheon with the aims of starting a family. However, after Lian's first few years, when they tried to conceive another child, they struggled. It seemed like nothing was working. So they adopted. Lian and his sister, Sying, grew up rather well together. But when Lian hit his toddler years and found his father's lighter, something happened.

Lian liked setting fires. He lit some action figures up and watched their plastic faces melt off in satisfaction. Next was a batch of his stuffed animals. He almost got close to setting the entire house on fire if he hadn't been caught. His parents, worried for him, removed everything he could use to start fires. No more lighters, no more stovetop usage. This didn't stop Lian from trying to burn things in the microwave, however. For some reason, he was addicted and didn't seem to be letting up any time soon.

As he aged, though, he began to finally realize the morality of lighting fires. Learning right from wrong frustrated him. Why couldn't he burn things? He could do it safely if he had to, with a fire extinguisher by his side. It wasn't ideal, of course, but he didn't want to help himself. There was something about watching stuff burn that mesmerized him. He loved it. And yet, he was rejected. His parents were rational, after all, and knew that with pyromania came numerous disasters. In denial, however, they refused to get him properly diagnosed. Their son couldn't possibly be that messed up, after all. He was just "troubled", and they wouldn't let him do anything potentially harmful to himself or others.

In his teen years, Lian joined a gang as a grasp out for freedom. His parents were too overbearing, refusing to let him do practically anything anymore. Together, his gang shoplifted, graffitied the town, and cheated in school. They earned a name for themselves, always wearing red-painted facemasks when they spray-painted rebellious murals. It was Lian who took the initiative and led his gang on into the world of arson, fueled by his own desires. There were several close calls where Lian almost got caught by the police. As it turned out, it wasn't the police he should've been worried about.

Coming home late one night, Lian snuck in by climbing the tree near his window. Sying was there waiting for him, her arms folded. It was when she saw the mask he was wearing that she realized the truth: Lian was a gangster. She started crying but said nothing about how she really felt or what she was going to do, merely turning around and leaving a distressed Lian to his own devices.

Overwhelmed with emotions of regret, Lian left his room in a rage. He went out into town and set numerous trash cans on fire, watching their contents burn in a contained metal bin before moving on to the next one. It wasn't long before he was caught by authorities. As he hadn't removed his mask, it was suspected that his gang put him up to this. Adding gang enhancement to his charge of misdemeanor arson got him a grand total of eight years in jail. His sister never visited him, although his mother and father did.

Ashamed of what he had done, Lian worked hard to try and find ways to put his pyromania to good use. He found relief through cooking, quickly becoming one of the best chefs the prison had. Spending his free time studying culinary arts only to burn away his stress when making lunch for his peers had Lian in a much better mood than he had been in his earlier years in life. He looks forward to leaving prison and moving on from his past mistakes.
