Yes! Rainbow Rowell is amazing. So far I've read Eleanor and Park, Carry On, Fangirl, and a short story of hers in a Christmas collection. Fangirl was the first novel of hers that I read, and I fell in love. It was so good, I recommend it highly!

Most of the time, yes. I personally find that it's easier for me to relate to my character if they are female. I have, however, played using male characters sometimes.
