Cool idea. I think I might have Tom start off at the mutant rally as part of the police presence, gets caught up in the fighting, snaps back to his senses causing Nightmare to make Tom relive a twisted version of his army days.

I might have Tom get caught up in some traumatic flashbacks of his days in the army brought on by nightmare while he looks for Xavier.

Struggling if I'm honest. Would you be against Tom running around the mindscape or would it be better if I just have him meet up with everyone else at Cerebro?

I would of said Compassion like @galvanismgal. I think that's the reason @Azurian Dream didn't include crests because it is very hard to pin down one specific thing. There is no reason why you couldn't have one trigger one stage and the other trigger the next e.g. compassion to champion, loyalty...
