    I don't get it... Today I was in my boring science class and I said something like "oh mate can you pass that to me?" And this one girl smirked at me and was like "did you just say mate?" .... Is that like... Something dirty that I don't know about or...?

    Maybe it's due to the fact that mate is usually used for gamers or males(From my experience) like "You want some mate."  or maybe because they just thought it was funny you said something Australians(Stereotypical) say.
