I started roleplaying with a friend of mine years ago, she would constantly tell me how horrible my stories are and my characters are but I still loved roleplaying. I've spent years perfecting my skill, and now that use left my abusive friendship with her I'm realizing I use roleplaying as a sort of coping mechanic.
