So I love your Riverdale theory, I had honestly overlooked her. I figured it would focus on the kids, and one of them would end being the killer. When Cheryl came into the comics (I hope this doesn't spoil anything, but from the show so far, it really won't.They're) using character names and loose representations of "old" canon relationships they had) she was a whole new character, so she was a bit of an outsider in terms of fan reception at first. But she ended up marrying Archie. SO she was also a bit of a rival for Betty and Veronica, you could say. That lead me to immediately peg her as trouble, and her attitude and shadiness doesn't help.
