Heh, sorry if I wasn't clear on this but the rings that Laius has weren't supposed to be the actual royal rings. He just thinks that thy are and due to this thinks that he is the thief that they are talking about, even though he isn't. The rings he has are emerald, not diamond.
What I meant to happen was that Laius dropped the rings that he thinks are the royal rings. Conner hands them back to him thinking that they are ordinary. Laius not wanting any witnesses drags him to an alley.
